I love this movie very muchly. And like a few others, I find scenes and images from it appearing to me during the course a day.

yum : isn't there a scene where he's reminiscing about a movie he did? and he's in a cop car with a monkey (doing all of his own driving, btw).
the cop car looks pretty dated, and those guys who talk to him in the bar were talking like that was teh height of his career.

uh... wow no way... at least i didn't think so. two of my japanese friends didn't mention feeling that at all. in fact, they laughed outloud during the parts where they were speaking japanese because they were in the minority who could actually understand it.

I went wif my japanese teacher and she enjoy it very much...and wasn't offended by anything from the film. Some people would probably would be offended..but it's personal perferences I guess. This goes with every film we watched there's always someone who would be offended etc.

i guess i could see why some people might get offended. but remember, it's being told from a foreigner's (bill murray's) point of view. i think it did a good job of conveying feelings of being lost and confused.

Yup

It definitely makes fun of Japanese people. Many of my freinds felt this way (Japanese & non-Japanese)as well. Time magazine even mentions it.

Were any of the portrayals of Japanese anything more than
all too obvious stereotypes and carictatures? C'mon admit it.
And the scene where they are like how come the Japanese mix their "R"s and "L's" up, cant speak English, etc. I mean c'mon Maybe most of them cant speak very good English cause they're in Japan!!!!!They mostly speak Japanese in Japan right?

Some people feel that Sofia gets underserved praise because of her connections, family, etc. Hmmm...

Not trying to make a big stink or be overly sensitive. And funny shit is cool. But when all they show the WHOLE movie is how goofy Japanese are its pretty obvious. I mean at least mix it up.

yeah i would have figured that the people who were getting upset about the japanese stuff were either white apologists or up tight people.
yeah it was there, but it wasn't mean spirited. i agree with whoever said it showed what a stranger in a strange land they were.

ah, i never posted my overall thoughts on the movie.
The movie had kind of a nice dreamy feel to it. Somebody said 'Jet-Lagged'. that was a good word for it. The pacing was wierd, though. The first part of the movie, it was kind of frantic. then all of a sudden it was kind of a waltzy, slower pace.
I'm not sure how i felt about the ending. It left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I had a terrible premonition at the beginning of the movie that the husband with glasses guy would hook up with blonde actor girl and she would end up with bill murray in some sort of deus ex machine type of ending. This was not nearly as bad of an ending, but i don't think i was pleased with this conclusion either. Didn't he give her a straight up full mouth kiss at the end of the movie? how ambigious is that? not very, that's how.
i think it would have been better if they had not fallen in love or whatever. I'm not sure if I felt that they were developed past the really great friends point. it could have been that they were both married, it could have been the age gap, it could have been bill murray cheating on his wife with the redheaded singer (more on that later).
on a higher note, i liked the drunk guy with bottle vs automatic weapon warrior standoff. that whole sequence was kinda neat. but that moment was pure bliss. fuck yeah.
another thought. ok, so bob bill murray whatever ... sleeps with the redheaded lounge singer, and earlier on, the cameron diaz-alike is yowling on the stage. did you guys think that they were linked events?
