Giant Robot is proud to host Convolvere, an art show featuring the work of Jack Long.
Jack Long grew up in West Chester, Pennsylvania and received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2002. Painting in oils on wood, his work explores human relationships in a narrative setting. His paintings draw heavily upon the tradition of storytelling, often utilizing motifs and imagery found in mythology and fairytales. Now based in Los Angeles, he says, "I feel like people think of their lives in this way, relating moments in their lives to fairytales or mythology. My paintings have grown out of this; they reveal the deeply rooted patterns of storytelling, mythology, and mysticism in our lives."
For the show, Long is preparing at least 30 oil paintings on wood. Most of them will utilize a new plant motif as well as an extended color palette in his effort to depict man's relationship with others, nature, and society.
A reception for Long will take place from 6:30 - 10:00 on Saturday, June 21.

Artists talk at JANM hosted by Eric Nakamura on Saturday, January 12, 2008
FREE Extended Hours 5:00 - 7:00 PM
Souther Salazar and TOCA on Sunday, January 13, 2008
FREE 3:00 - 5:00 PM
To celebrate Giant Robot magazine’s 50th issue, publisher Eric Nakamura curated the Giant Robot Biennale: 50 issues. Featuring artists with whom he has worked in the past--whether in the pages of the magazine or in the associated gallery spaces in Los Angeles, San Francisco, or New York City--the group show’s opening attracted a record-breaking audience of over 2,700 to its opening at the Japanese American National Museum in Downtown L.A.’s Little Tokyo on November 3.
The Biennale’s works range from Pryor Praczukowski's cinematic photography to David Choe's graffiti-like murals. The pieces in between include panels by leading indie-comics artist Adrian Tomine and the "cute" works of APAK, Souther Salazar, and Saelee Oh. Sashie Masakatsu's oil paintings reflect the nostalgia of pop culture-influenced youth and Seonna Hong's multimedia abstraction suggests both the sadness and peacefulness of seasons gone by, while Eishi Takaoka's sculptures can dominate a room with their meditative presence.
On the show’s final weekend, Eric will host a roundtable discussion with artists Seonna Hong, Pryor Praczukowski, and Souther Salazar at 2:00 on Saturday, January 12. That evening, JANM will have free extended hours from 5:00 to 7:00.
In addition, Salazar will be participating in a TOCA (Teens of Contemporary Art) event on Sunday, January 13. After exploring the (c) Murakami show at MOCA and the GR Biennale at JANM, guests will paint and silkscreen with the artist in a hands-on workshop. No reservation or fee is required.
