Does anyone have a video of this?
I was actually in the Krystal Hamburger World Eating Championship last year as an honorary guest. (Chattanooga. Cold ass. Marching band. Fried beef patties. Stomach ache.) People were busting nuts over the fact that Kobayashi destroyed 67 Krystals in eight minutes, with Joey Chestnut right behind him. But ninety-freaking-seven? As a woman who is not so easily impressed, consider it done. (And a shout out to my awesome friend Pat Bertoletti who is closing in...)

Hi, Claudine! I'm a big fan of your writing at Jane -- I just tried to e-mail this to you through Jane's Web site, but it wouldn't go through. So here's what I was trying to send:
I've subscribed to Jane for years, but, well, I was gonna let my subscription run out this time. However, your singularly fabulous writing is, yet again, the one thing that keeps me coming back. (Yeah, your magazine does have a lot of good writers, but lady, you're in your own league.) As Mary Roach's writing always woke me up when I was snoozing through Vogue, and as I buy GQ for the David Rakoff/David Sedaris fix... well, not to end this sentence in a snoozy manner, but you get the drift. Anyway, thanks for making me subscribe again. When are you gonna write a book, lady?
Oh, crap on toast, dude! I just read your other posts here, 'cause I was like, "Oh, yay -- more fabulous writing from Claudine Ko," and I quickly realized I just resubscribed to that mag in vain, 'cause -- well, it sounds like you aren't writing for them anymore. Damn, damn, damn. Seriously, your writing was THE one reason I renewed my subscription!... I was like, "Hmmm, I just don't like the newer version, but well, Claudine Ko's still writing for 'em, and her writing's so great..." oh, well.
This is a hard one to respond to. You know how everyone always writes an obligatory "Thanks and goodbye" email when they quit their job? Well, I didn't. Not because I didn't intend to, but because the corporate powers that be at my old gig shut down my email and building security card at exactly 6:30 pm my last day. So it was fun being locked in the elevator vestibule on the 8th floor at 7 pm on a Friday night, banging on the glass doors for no one to hear so I could get back to my motherf'ing cube and file one last story. Yes, aspiring magazinees, that's how glamorous it can be. When I went to remotely email the staff later that weekend, I'd already missed the window and just left it at that. Don't really know why I'm getting into that, but since you, Elizabeth, have been so kind as to extend yourself and offer such sweet sentiments, not to mention your hard earned money in vain, I figure now's a good time to do my wave goodbye to Jane and all that. It was the best job I'll probably ever have -- a well-paying position as a staff writer where you weren't allowed to be a lazy with your words. Props to Jane Pratt for letting us editors get away with a lot of the insano shit that we wanted to. Anyway, it all comes down to the proverbial fact that nothing gold can stay. (Read The Outsiders. S.E. Hinton wrote that masterpiece in high school and made me want to be a writer.) And that I wanted to do other cool shit, like get back into science documentary-making (what I do now), experience life outside the NYC media bubble, and, perhaps, write that book I’ve been meaning to since I was 15. Thanks again for reading.
It's ain't just elizabeth that thinks you should write a book claudine.
Hello Claudine, great posting as usual. Ironic that USA,Inc. remains as ever in a bubble of insular political unawareness and vapidly unrepentant decadence. What within the 10 minutes required to ingest 97 ground meat sandwiches by such a 'superb athlete' at this 'triste' event, whilst garnering for him a cool 30,000USD, elsewhere in the world 120 children perished from hunger and malnutrition. ('One child dies of hunger globally every 5sec.' WHO)
OK, I know, I know, right, right, right, after the contestants disgorged the 300kg. of high-caloric fast food, the yield of the great collective gastric 'vidange' was flash frozen and shipped to Bangaladesh.
Bises et à +.

dollface! thanks for responding, yo -- that totally made my day. i'm gonna get The Outsiders from the interlibrary loan. who needs you, nameless deteriorating-in-quality magazine, when i've still got BUST, fer chrissakes, and when i've found the blog of one of my fave writers? i've also been inspired to write more myselfen, so thank you for that.
Dear Claudine,
I'm a big fan and I'm also the president of the Princeton University Sexual Harassment/Assault Advising Resources & Education (SHARE) program ; we're organising a Colloquium on Sexual Harassment in the Workplace and I'd really like to invite you to come to Princeton to be one of our panellists during a discussion on the topic on April 18th of this year. I think that your experience with journalism and your time in the media world would add a very interesting perspective to the event and I would be honored if you'd consider it. Basically the purpose is to help students make the connection between sexual harassment as an abstract concept and as a real issue that can happen where they live, work, play.
This may seem like a bizarre way to make this request, but since I can't seem to find another way to get in touch with you (obviously lacking in the journalistic stalking skills!) If you would be interested, please feel free to contact me at jmkwong@princeton.edu or jessica.m.kwong@gmail.com
Let me know and we can discuss event, honorarium details etc. I'd love to hear from you! Best of luck with everything.
Jess
