My parent's house to yours. This is just a couple of pictures of osechi. That's what the big New Years meal is called. More food porn later. My mom cooks as good as it can get. Probably like many of yours.

These are eggrolls. I guess finger foods are easy for bigger groups. It's interesting what you can put into an egg roll, it's like leftovers chopped finely. It's weird, but sort of cool. Eggrolls are greatly underrated.

THE BATTLE OF THE NISHIME

When my grandmother started cooking
osechi at my mom’s house. My
grandmother had her own style of
making the nishime (we’ll call it the
country style) And then my mom had
her style that she learned from my
other grandmother. (We’ll call it the
Tokyo or city style). The country style
has more taste, while the city version
looks nicer. (presentation wise).

Well of course they would both
insist on making their own style of nishime
(double work) and would argue
all night back and forth about who’s
is better. And I would be thinking,
all of this commotion over boiled
vegetables? Even if there was a winner,
how could you tell who won?

Anyways both of my grandmothers
have passed on now and my mom
is completely in charge of the osechi
menu. So, Does she only make her style
now? No. Does she make both styles and
argue with herself? No. She makes both
styles in remembrance
of both of my grandmothers.

So there is no more arguing in the
kitchen during osechi time, but
there’s still sometimes confusion
about why there are two different styles
of nishime, when we already have so
much food. When people ask, we tell
them about the
