Giant Robot Store and GR2 News

The Harley Davidson motorcycle that went across the Pacific in a storage container via the Tsunami in Japan, is now on display at the Harley Davidson Museum in Milwaukee, WI. (LA Times – Tsunami Harley) We previously wrote about the finding of the bike and what Harley Davidson was intending to do with it. Glad they got it all done quickly. (GR – HD)

They can’t sell US cars in Japan, but the bikes are working. Because most can’t buy US made cars in Japan an easily, especially ones with larger size and price tags, a bike will suit just fine. A Hummer is a great example. On what road will a Hummer actually drive correctly in Japan? None, but a bike, sure why not? In a place where tons of bikes look exactly the same, getting a US made bike will actually stand out and be cool. (WSJ – Bikes)

All this week we’ve been encouraging folks to bike the stores and make use of the brand new bike racks that were installed last weekend. The racks are free and were easily requested through the LA Department of Transportation.   More and more people are biking in Los Angeles, and not just to be part of a party ride, but to make the most of their time in traffic and explore their neighborhood (and new ones!) in a way that’s much more conducive to seeing what’s actually going on where you live. The Giant Robot stores on Sawtelle have lots of neighborhood regulars, so the bike racks have been getting lots of use! Mal is a neighbor who stopped in today and picked up some cool buttons from Future Colors of America (Aiyana Udesen, Matt Furie & Albert Reyes) and also tried his luck with the Busy Beaver Button Machine. Mal has rad sunglasses, a nice bike, and good taste in buttons! Come by today and tomorrow for the final days of our Ride Your Bike sale and get 25% off your purchase at Giant Robot or GR2. Be like Mal!

Welcome Bike Racks to GR stores! (both of the shops have a metal loop so you can lock  your bike). They’re installed by the city at our request and now you can contribute to a better planet. By doing this, we’re letting you save as well. The sale starts tomorrow. Take 25% off. Read the dates! Same restrictions apply. No art, no sale items. Please don’t drive, park, take your bikes out of the trunk and fake ride. We’ll point you out! Wear a helmet! We’ll have a few more perks by way of snacks for you riders.

Sometimes, a small thing like a bike rack can mean a lot. Why is it that on our busy street, there are no bike racks? We’re on the Westside of LA which means people trying to exercise, get out, save gas, stick it to the man (not really), and pedal. Where to park your bike? On a tree? At a meter? Soon, as seen with what looks like a stencil tag is a bike rack that’ll sit in front of Giant Robot and GR2 and even Tofuya (yes, they got lucky since Michelle B. who set these up, pointed the bike rack installer in that direction). This leads back to why? Why didn’t anyone else think of it? Is GR still the most progressive to look at Google? Are people so hung up on taking customers money that they don’t care where their customers are supposed to put their bikes? There’s a lot of questions on the “new” Sawtelle area, and “new” meaning just the last couple of years. Our world is changing here, and we’re now the older businesses on the block at 10 and 8 years. The bike racks… That’s a great thing for customers and we’ll promote some specials for bike riders soon. We’ll also watch the customers for other places park their bikes at the racks in front of our shop. We’ll happily share even if the other businesses won’t.
