[nggallery id=92]   FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Art show opening Jill Bliss and Saelee Oh at GR2 December 8 – January 9 Reception: Saturday, December 8, 6:30 -10:00 GR2 2062 Sawtelle Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90025 gr2.net (310) 445-9276 Giant Robot is proud to present Hidden Habitats, an art show featuring the work of Jill Bliss and Salee Oh. Jill Bliss grew up on a family farm in Northern California where everything was hand-built or cultivated-the food, the house, the farm machinery, and even the family computers. Since graduating from the Parsons School of Design the California College of the Arts, her professional background has included fashion design, illustration, and design theory. Whether designing limited-edition paper goods or fine art pieces, all of her work reveals a fondness for combining fabric, paper, and other found materials. Since graduating from Art Center in 2003, Saelee Oh has manifested her modern take on storybooks and traditional women’s crafts through painting, illustration, and paper cutting. Weaving a compelling mix of fantasy, femininity, and whimsy, her work has earned support from the indie art world as well as mainstream publications such as Time Magazine and American Illustration. For this show, the artists will make individual and collaborative drawings, paper cut-outs, sewn soft sculptures, and other pieces that expand on the theme of their third collaborative calendar, Hidden Habitats. The artwork depicts houses, shelters, buildings, and dwellings incorporating and blending into nature. These dwellings are sometimes human-sized, but more often than not sized for real and imagined animals, reptiles, or bugs. In this body of work, both artists explore the underlying structures of nature, the inherent beauty and interdependence of these structures, and human nature’s interpretation of and dependence upon them. The original drawings, many of which have been altered or expanded upon since the making of the calendar, will also provide insight into the artists’ digital and hand-drawn collaborative process. A reception for Bliss and Oh will take place from 6:30 – 10:00 on Saturday, December 8.

[nggallery id=55]   FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Convolvere art show opening Jack Long at GR2 Sponsored by Scion June 21 – July 16 Reception: Saturday, June 21, 6:30 -10:00 GR2 2062 Sawtelle Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90025 gr2.net (310) 445-9276 Giant Robot is proud to host Convolvere, an art show featuring the work of Jack Long. Jack Long grew up in West Chester, Pennsylvania and received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2002. Painting in oils on wood, his work explores human relationships in a narrative setting. His paintings draw heavily upon the tradition of storytelling, often utilizing motifs and imagery found in mythology and fairytales. Now based in Los Angeles, he says, “I feel like people think of their lives in this way, relating moments in their lives to fairytales or mythology. My paintings have grown out of this; they reveal the deeply rooted patterns of storytelling, mythology, and mysticism in our lives.” For the show, Long is preparing at least 30 oil paintings on wood. Most of them will utilize a new plant motif as well as an extended color palette in his effort to depict man’s relationship with others, nature, and society.

[nggallery id=63]   Deth P. Sun at GR2, April 28 – May 16 Reception: Saturday, April 28 GR2 2062 Sawtelle Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90025 gr2.net (310) 445-9276 Giant Robot is proud to present new work by Deth P. Sun at GR2. Upon graduating from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 2002, Deth P. Sun grasped the indie art world by the eyeballs with his paintings of mysterious catlike people, cloaked children, and floating animals. Standing on barren landscapes, suspended in water, and surrounded by clouds, Sun’s humble-yet-heroic characters instill the purity of a Precious Moments ceramic with the dark whimsy of a Maurice Sendak’s children’s book and epic proportions of a Brothers Hildebrandt airbrush mural. Since his first solo show at GR2 in the summer of 2003, the Oakland-based artist has taken part in no less than 70 group and solo shows, including an excursion to the U.K. Stylistically, Deth has been sticking with his popular chunky creatures, somber pallet, and dreamy backgrounds, but his latest work has featured new elements of fine linework, detailed landscapes, and sea battles. The opening reception for the artist will take place from 6:30 – 10:00 on Saturday, April 28.
