The Binges at the Viper Room

Last night, The Binges played infamous The Viper Room. Kind of a weird place known more for Johnny Depp being a co-owner and River Phoenix OD'ing on the sidewalk in front of it than having good bands play, but the size is nice and cozy and sound system is quite good. Actually, the upscale rocker bar aesthetic fit well for the L.A. groups's genuine, nonstop, unironic, party metal with virtuosic axe handling. The password to get in free was "rock the fuck out," and they did just that. If you missed it, you missed out, but there's still next week's gig at the San Pedro Lobster Fest (along with The English Beat, whose set at Del Mar the other weekend got a rave review from my brother, and Shorty's Kiss Band!)...

More detailed review of The Beat at Del Mar's closing day:

Purists will wince that it's just Dave Wakeling with back-up band. The Ranking Roger Replacement (2-Tone Tony?) went a little overboard on DW's 30 years of ska royalty, but he was very good. And although he seemed a dirty old man at times, Dave's voice is still pretty smooth. I wondered if they'd have the nerve to play Ranking Full Stop -- when they did, it was awesome! Same with all the other hits you know and love: Jackpot, Jeanette, Rough Rider, Mirror in the Bathroom, Click Click, Save it for Later, etc.

It's a little sad The Beat are now playing free shows at race tracks and lobster festivals -- but, hey, the greatest Rock band in the world, The Binges, are playing the lobster fest, too!

It's not sad that they're playing Lobsterfest in LA. I'm going to be there rocking the hell out with melted butter smeared all over my face. Very, very good times
