Show reviews: Dum Dum Girls record release party at Los Globos and in-store at Origami Vinyl, Beach House and Dustin Wong at The Wiltern, Money Mark and friends at GRB3/JANM

Wow. Last night’s Dum Dum Girls record release party was awesome. It really brought me back to being in college, going to goth clubs with low stages in dark and sketchy restaurants, and being blown away by bands that are not only great but otherworldly. Too good to walk on this boring earth. But life isn’t necessarily that dull, is it? My week in shows started out last Saturday at in Little Tokyo with Money Mark, Ashley Dzerigian, and Fredo Ortiz playing a short but rad set at the opening of Giant Robot Biennale 3. (more…)

LA Weekly: GR Biennale 3 at JANM

Article about the Giant Robot Biennale 3 by Liz Ohanesian. Thank you much.

Luke Chueh: “”I really believe that Giant Robot helped promote that the fact that there is more to this scene than the Japanese Superflat artists,” says Chueh, referencing artist Murakami and like-minded artists in Japan.” (LA Weekly – Biennale 3)

Giant Robot Time: 9.21.12 – Giant Robot Biennale 3 opening party is tomorrow Sat. Sept. 22nd 6-10pm!

The Japanese American National Museum presents Giant Robot Biennale 3, its third show in conjunction with Eric Nakamura, owner of Asian American pop culture juggernaut Giant Robot. The expansive show features a gallery of eight emerging artists along with a customized vinyl figure collection.

Following two previous successful exhibitions at the National Museum, the Biennale continues to push the envelope with a creative, fresh, and uniquely interactive experience. This year’s exhibition highlights the works of Rob Sato, Deth P. Sun, Ako Castuera, Eishi Takaoka, Saelee Oh, Sean Chao, Albert Reyes, and Zach Gage, all with long ties to Giant Robot. Each artist brings their original style, from whimsical wall paintings and creatures in clay worlds, to a life-size “haunted” maze especially built for this Biennale. Learn more about the artists here.

Using Uglydoll creator David Horvath figures, Nakamura curated Project Remix, a custom vinyl show with over 80 artists from seven countries—including the rare combination of both established customizers and fine artists. The roster of artists for the project (UPDATED):

To coincide with the Biennale 3 exhibition at the Japanese American National Museum, we’ve released a set of 12 buttons.

It’s an Edition of 30. 1 of which will be exhibited at the Giant Robot Biennale 3: Remix Project.

Audrey Kawasaki’s beautiful paintings adorn the collectible tins.

Rest assured, your cookie jar is finally safe.
Andrew Hem’s artwork captures the rich emotion of inbetween states.

Here’s a video to tell you about the exhibition. I’m glad I didn’t ramble too much. It’s nicely done and it’ll show in the theater during the duration of the exhibition. Thanks to the crew at JANM who worked on this and make plans to come Saturday 6-10pm on September 22 at JANM. >>

From a few days ago. In progress and I was only allowed to show this wide. >>

When it was time to create an image or look for the exhibition. I turned to an artist who shows at GR. She has great graphics and art skill and it was the coolest way to go. Sara Saedi. >>

Scenes From a Biennale 2

The banner is getting installed, but after finding a few snags in the print out, it’s all getting redone. Damn. So close, but not close enough. It’s a good looking wall.

Eishi Takaoka sculpture. The light was dim, so the photo is too.

Lynn Yamasaki… she made GR Jello. Those are Big Boss Robots in there. Seriously great and they taste great too.
