Yoskay Yamamoto is a treasure in Los Angeles. As thoughtful and charming as his presence at various exhibitions, he’s also a developed creator. His painted imagery is unmistakable and his 3d work which is often hard carved is whimsical and precious. Yamamoto will be creating numerous flower sculptures along with paintings, and as usual, will create an enchanting installation.

Yoskay Yamamoto was born in Japan, attended school in Santa Barbara, and is a self taught artist living in Los Angeles. Join him and many of his friends at his exhibition reception. Music will be provided by Kalin Charles.

Giant Robot presents: 20 Years Art x Mags Exhibition
Giant Robot began in 1994 as a zine which soon became a full-fledged magazine and published for 16 years. Today, Giant Robot exists as a website, a shop, and as a gallery. Although the exact date of inception is a mystery, the date published on the cover of the first issue says it all – No. 1 and 1994.

Featuring many artists who have appeared in Giant Robot and some who haven’t.

The list includes:

Nathan Ota – Scrambled Eggs and a side of Collectables 

Nathan Ota is a graffiti legend who grew up painting with fellow artists like Risk in Los Angeles in the 80′s. His diligence led him on a successful route of fine art and this exhibition at GR2 will feature smaller original works and a few exciting new products and previews of things to come. His works are vibrant and detailed and his technique is unabashed. Ota attended high school at University High School, local from the gallery and this exhibition will be a sort of a “homecoming”. When he’s not painting, Ota teaches art at both Otis College of Art and Design and at Santa Monica College.

Merging Views will be the first exhibition opening at Giant Robot 2 in 2014 and featuring great artists from Los Angeles and beyond: Godeleine de Rosamel, Wayne Johnson, Kwanchai Moriya, Stasia Burrington, Dan McCarthy, and Dan-ah Kim.

Each will be featuring their own hand in art, from 40 clay sculptures by childrens book artist, Godeleine de Rosamel, silk screener hero Dan McCarthy, who captures Cape Cod, life long ago and worlds beyond, to painters which range in styles. Wayne Johnson uses oils in a time tested technique that echoes both contemporary and historical works. Kwanchai Moriya works faster and creates pieces based on sci-fi and the fantastic, yet at times captures his local environment. Stasia Burrington mixes an illustration style often using watercolors, and Dan-ah Kim works with whimsical and contemplative images which will add a layer of complexity.

Irrational Exuberance:

A first-person mystery playground at the end of the world, Irrational Exuberance is a surrealist space oddysey.  Explore a cluster of asteroids that appear to orbit exoplanet EX-I.  Discover hidden beauty and unusual phenomenon that react to your presence.  Minimalist controls and UI.  Ideally experienced with virtual reality technologies like Oculus Rift. Giant Robot is proud to present Paper Noise, an art show featuring new works by Rob Sato and Ryohei Tanaka.

 

Rob Sato and Ryohei Tanaka were once roommates in the infamous “Art’s Crab Shack Apartment” during the late 90s in Oakland, California where they attended the California College of the Arts. They’ve remained friends since. Rob Sato often exhibits with Giant Robot and his work has continued to progress from wild and deranged imagery to a more controlled abstraction. Sato paints with watercolors and succinctly tells a story that’s steeped in historical references. Ryohei Tanaka “paints with scissors” and paper cuts his works. He’ll be exhibiting over 100 paper cuts often depicting beasts and are often bilaterally symmetrical. He’ll also be cutting paper live.

 

An opening reception for Paper Noise will take place Saturday November 9 th 6:30 – 10:00 p.m.

Katsuya Terada will be showing original works at Giant Robot 2 for his exhibition of Hot Pot Girls. Yet on Sunday, he’ll demonstrate his work with the tablet. Projected on screen, you’ll be able to see how Terada develops his imagery from beginning to end.

Feel free to ask questions while he’s drawing. We’ll have a translator present.

Katsuya Terada will also sign books and we’ll have an exclusive 5×7 size print available for sale on Sunday.

Giant Robot is proud to present End of Summer Never Ends, an art show featuring new works by kozyndan (featuring Leah Chun).

It’s been years since artist duo kozyndan has exhibited in their home city of Los Angeles. In fact, it was more than a decade ago since their first exhibition at the Giant Robot store which then prompted the opening of Giant Robot 2. We’ll be seeing a new range of work, from their paintings to their newer craft of sculpture. Their influence from their worldly travels will continue and they’ll also have a special guest artist and collaborator, Leah Chun who’s works are driven by popular culture. End of Summer Never Ends will continue the legacy of the artist duo.

An opening reception for End of Summer Never Ends will take place from 6:30 – 10:00 on Saturday, Sept 7th.

Theo Ellsworth is promising that this is going to be his biggest show ever. That’s a huge promise and we’re ready for him. He now lives in Montana, has an expanded studio and will be in attendance.

From Wikipedia: “Ellsworth has published two books, including Capacity and Sleeper Car. A story from Sleeper Car was chosen for The Best American Comics 2010.[1] His work has been described as “a cross between cartooning and art, poetry and the nonsensical ramblings of a writer emerging from a dream.”

An opening reception for Ellsworth will take place from 6:30 – 10:00 on Saturday, July 27th.

GR2: Iwai Shunji – Out of the Films – One Week Exhibition

A solo exhibition of works by director, Iwai Shunji.

“Generally, people call me a Director or Filmmaker. However I feel like I’m just a kid who’s having fun. I like drawing, taking photos, writing novels and composing music. This time, I focused on pictures I drew. Please enjoy them.”

The exhibition will feature some story board art, drawn by Iwai as well as some of his photographs. Iwai Shunji is scheduled to appear in person at the exhibition reception.
