they have the greatest titles for their songs.
"Never ending math equations"

i think the frogs and anal cunt have the best song titles:
frogs - "What Will We Do Now That Grandpa's Dead?" (or something like that)
a.c. - "Living Colour Is My Favorite Black Metal Band"
Always-Sometimes

3rd planet is a wonderful song.
as far as song titles, why has no one mentioned anal cunt?

I like the early stuff, they remade a lot of their first songs, clean them up a little. Don't have the same impact. If you can find Interstate 8, that's my favorite, it's got the original Tundra/Desert, really intense. I only have a dub myself.
and The Locust has the best songtitles. They secretly have mewmew writing for them, but he's too shy to tell you.

i agree, jim... they're playing in SD on 8/12

saw them last night in town. they were technically very good, good instruments and all. packed venue. but i thought it was a lonely show. i felt that it was emotionally distant,no sense of DIY immediacy...just well-played, tidy versions of their songs. i was bummin...cuz i like their songs so much...i can hear loneliness, awkwardness, joy, and liberation in em...only to watch them played so...SONY (polished and packaged). dont mean to be a downer; i just feel like a jilted lover right now! anyway, keep listenin! have a good week, everyone.

i saw them live last year, i kind of liked them before, but after i saw them, i realized they TOTALLY SUCK?!
yeah...they do. they were drunk. it was crowded. people were crying. wah wah wah. those goddamn emoindierock kids with their bad haircuts and overusage of the words "amazing" and "beautiful" make me want to shoot myself over and over again.
needless to say, i wasnt very impressed. it was one of the worst shows id ever been to, just cause drunk musicians arent very chamrming. and i wouldnt pay that much for diahrea on a paper plate....seriously..wait, the guitar was okay at a few points. ill give him that...

yeah dood! i hate that rockstar mentality that bands like that have. they think they can get DRUNK before a show and fuck everything up, walk off stage, barf for half hour, then come back and say you gotta go...uugh...im sorry, but i paid my money.
and im surrounded by stupid kids with the same dyed black flippy haircut.
and theres a drunk guy with a lisp on stage.
i paid $18 for that?
i could make 18 20-minute phone calls!!!

i like isaac brock's lyrics..songs about loneliness and other things. so i was really disappointed at their last show in my town. it just lacked the immediacy that i guess i was kind of expecting. i'm checking out their show next month and hope to not be let down again...

The thing that I don't like about Modest Mouse live is that they extend their songs. So even if it's a song that I do like, they make it waaaaay too long.

they're new album is out April 6th !!!!!
i just heard a new song on the way to work, and isaac brock isn't the lead vocalist. he's on the track towards the end.
it sounded... like modest mouse... and that's incredibly happy to me.
he's and a**hole on stage and it's not uncommon fo rhim to get mad and quit playing. i guess he has issues.

^better than the last show. it was my first time at the new soma (sports arena). packed show. they sounded really good. the guitar work was insane. the crowd was pretty obnoxious (talking and heckling throughout) and i wasn't into isaac brock's banter, but the music was good...his songs are still devastatingly beautiful (to me at least). maybe i'll see you at the whistle stop!

i saw them a couple months ago, my first time, and they were great. i had always heard they suck live but they seem to have cleaned up their act, now that they do nissab commercials. they did cowboy dan last, and unfortunately turned into cowboy jam that lasted forever.

"After stepping up to the major-label plate with The Moon and Antarctica, Modest Mouse reach back to their roots with Sad Sappy Sucker.
Sucker is actually the band's first recording, released in 2001 but created back in 1994.
It was shelved in favor of Lonesome Crowded West as their debut, but Sucker is still a fine piece of the Modest Mouse lineage.
Although parts of Sucker are experimental compared to the band's current polish, this isn't some rarity to be enjoyed only by collectors. Breezy melodies build into jagged choruses as singer Isaac Brock shows he can be both tender and playfully aggressive. Most of the songs clock in between two and three minutes, leaving room for numerous gems in the course of the 24-track album. While 12 of the songs come from a recording session with K Records' Calvin Johnson, a chunk of Sucker material comes from Brock's "Dial-a-Song" phase, during which callers heard new songs by dialing into his answering machine. These experiments range from lo-fi combos of distorted instruments and whiny vocals to complete songs, like the bluesy rock jam on "Secret Agent X-9." The Dial-a-Songs--and a message left by Murder City Devils front man Spencer Moody ("Call to Dial-a-Song")--are both comic relief and proof that Modest Mouse didn't gain their indie-rock cult status by accident. The talent's been there from the beginning. "

I gave up on them shortly after hearing "The Moon and Antarctica".
I really never got the last one, but I heard it and I didn't hate it.

Listened to it on the HMV headphones and sounds good...too bad everyone`s probably (including myself) expecting something spectacular just because Johnny Marr`s signed on. I couldn`t detect a jangle or a flourish by him, which means he`s still a brilliant player for whatever the music calls for.
Sure Modest Mouse existed long before, I fucking hated their fans cos they`re all a certain type of people; in my case, collegiate rockers who liked them surrounded me like cancer--Sad Sappy Sucker sounded like all their early records, whiny, contrived, defeatist...white. I much prefer all the bands that followed from there on, but who am I to say, I`m a huge Smiths fan and half of the world fucking hates them and their guitar player joins fucking MM!
Havent heard the new one but its getting heavily panned.. So I guess I'm not missing anything.
Thirty Nine
04-08-2007, 12:23 AM
It`s obvious their fanbase grew up to be rock critics, or just that the ones who were honed on their Up releases can`t make the same transition The Band did, which was either avoid repeating themselves, boredom, wanting to buy a house...I can`t imagine Isaac Brock being "like that" but maybe he buys stocks and has an eye on "futures".
Most bands are like that, where outgrowth and distancing happens over the years, especially because they stick around longer (those with more consistent output like MM experience that, with heavy touring) and god forbid, score a hit song or two along the way.
Despite being on a major label for almost ten years now, their ethic is still effectively independent and yet still the long-term effects of the indie aesthetic has taken its toll. An artists who release less product and are more sporadic tend to keep longer (fuckin, anybody from New Order, Kate Bush...Scott Walker comes to mind but the wrong idea; Bjork is a *bad example cos she`s always putting out product but keeping it quite interesting) fanbases. Maybe?
joetron2030
04-09-2007, 07:54 AM
I will say that MM and I parted amicably when I gave up on them. I don't hate them for their current sound. I just don't find it very interesting.
Artists change and fans can choose to following along or not.
As for Bjork, while I enjoyed "Vespertine", "Medulla" did nothing for me. I'm curious to hear her next album though. I'm always interested in hearing what she's up to.
I guess a lot of people gave up on them cause they were of the biggest "lounge" bands I guess, seem like everybody used to like them, now nobody even bothers to comment. Oh well.
I can't really pinpoint why i hate the new record, I guess it's not bad. I dunno. I don't even feel like listening to again to find out. I was mostly a fan of Brock's guitar playing, and I already like Marr, so I was curious how that'd work...they almost cancel reach other other. I can't tell if his singing has gotten worse or if it's the heavy overproduction letting you hear it better. Whaddayagonnado?
