Sega games rock dude...sports games included. I've had people who were partial to EA test out NBA2k2 and NHL2k2 and they all felt the Sega games were superior to their EA counterparts.

Hmmm... Will the AI be better in NFL2k3 than Madden?
What would be the incentive to switch?

I heard that if you play NCAA 2003 Football, you can save players to your memory card, then draft them onto your NFL teams in Madden 2003. That's some wild shit!

I think sports games are the perfect vehicle for online gaming.
Let's hope Madden 2003 is networkable.

it's madden or nothing for me. i'm a die hard fan of the series, ever since the early versions on genesis and super NES. i've spent many college nights drunk and zooted schooling everyone in my dorms. back then it was madden '94 and my teams were the 69 chiefs, 77 cowboys, 83 raiders, 88 bengals, 90 bills, and the 90 giants. no one was touching me with those teams. and i'm just as good on the latest madden editions. i can probably win tournaments and shit, but i'm not that nerdy.

Oh yeah, so what's the best base defense to play in
against an offense that can both run or pass effectively?

i use a 4-3 defense and play the outside linebacker. i like to cheat my defensive line left or right depending where the tight end lines up so that my defense can cover more ground if it's a running play. i usually blitz on passing downs using the swim move to manuever my way to the quarterback. if i see the running back go out to the flat, i will cover him. but i like to keep the pressure on the qb so i use a variety of blitz's. basically change it up between man and zone coverage. the 4-3 offers a number of schemes.

That's a good question. I think the AIs are pretty similar. From the reviews last year of Madden 2002 and NFL2K2, many reviewers gave Sega the nod because of their attention to the realism in the running game where RBs wouldn't just hit the backs of linemen and stop but actually bounce off and move to one side or the other. Also, the RBs in NFL2k2 would make that realistic move of sliding sideways through gaps between players.

Yeah, that's definitely true. Your college players in EA's NCAA 2003 can be drafted in Madden 2003.

NFL 2K3 already has on-line play in it. It did for the DC. But, I'm not sure if they kept that feature in or not for their PS2 (and Xbox?) ports.
So, Madden, if it's going to have on-line play, is playing catch-up.
That said, I'm going to be doing some testing. I've got a PS2 and an Xbox. So, i'll probably rent all 4, have my friend come over, and we'll see which is better (in play and in graphics).
Right now, I'm playing NCAA 2003's "Dynasty Mode". It's a great game. Love it so far.
The changes in difficulty between levels (JV, Varsity, All-American, Heisman) is a bit jumpy. I started playing in JV and I was beating every team by 3 TDs or more. Switched to Varsity and was losing every game by 2 TDs or more. Right now, I've got it set on JV but I've tweaked all of the CPUs abilities to the max. It seems to be a bit better now.

I am most looking forward to Robotech! First I saw video for it on the Robotech DVD's (as well as Robotech Crsytal Dreams for the N64 that I orginally saw at E3 a long time ago, and was part of my original decision to get an N64, though it never came out!) then on the web. Man this game looks amazing! All three veritech modes, thousands of missiles, and you can shoot them down in Robot mode. Though most of the footage I have seen is listed as from the X-Box version, which means I will probably pick it up for the X-Box.
The game even got the original American voice actors back, as you get to interact with Rick, Lisa, Minmei, Maz Sterliing and Roy Folker, and the beggining levels are actual epsidoes from the series. I can't wait!
Also EBX/Electronics Boutique is going to be selling a special edition for $20 more with extra Robotech Merchandise including a T-Shirt and Dog tags.

Sony sent me a thing saying they wanted me to Beta test the online gaming, but then they wanted me to pay 24.95 for a Sony Dialup connection, but use it through my DSL, that I am already paying for! A beta test should be free, as I would be doing them a favor! having to buy a year of Sony service is more expensive than the online adapter and a few games!
Actually I like the idea for Sony's online service. It doesn't require Sony servers to work. Not like X-Box where you must host the game on Microsoft servers (that is why EA is not doing online games on the X-Box as they refuse to let Microsoft have their code). Also Sony's service is free (well at least all the announced games) once you have the adapter (though I hear Final Fantasy might have a monthly subscription fee) while Microsoft will charge a yearly fee for their online service. Though after seeing UNREAL for the X-BOX it just might be worth it. It looks phenomenal with individual blades of grass being rendered!

I opted not to get one until FFXI (US) goes online. Even with the really bad reviews of FFXI (from Japan), I was really impressed with the game at E3 so it's already "sold" to me. Maybe we can set a GR tribe/party when the game comes out.
We have the Dreamcast Broadband Adaptor and played the sh*t out of it for the NFL/NBA 2k games, Bomberman Online and....Phantasy Star Online.
We were tempted to get the Sony package for NFL2K3 but we're going to wait and see how the online play is.
My big beefs with console online gaming:
--Outright cheating. People using Gamesharks to up their stats, etc. Hope Sony finds a way to block it. It destroyed Phantasy Star Online. In Phantasy Star Online, gamers were deleting other people's items and reducing their stats to Level 1. Or they would simply crash the game in progress.
--Stupid quitters. Nothing bites more than a sore loser who quits an online football or basketball game because they're losing. All sports online game should feature a stat counter of how many times a person has quit/reset an online game.
I definitely will get the Sony modem when they get around to announcing the release dates of other online games like Resident Evil or Auto Modelista.
As for the gamecube...nothing will keep me away from my future favorite form of Smack...Phantasy Star Online (Ep 1 & 2) with the Broadband Adaptor.
As for all the peops getting the Sony Network Adaptor and playing the first wave of Sony Online games (Socom, etc) be sure to post your impressions here.

In the US, both the network adapter and SOCOM came out yesterday (08/29). I picked up both at Best Buy.
They had a special table/display set up with both the adapter and SOCOM on display. It was really weird. I went to grab the game and the adapter and then the guy manning the table was, like, "wait. we have to have someone walk you up to the counter." WTF?!?!?
Anyway, I installed the adapter last night. Easy-peasy (as the Naked chef would say). The adapter came with a CD with the adapter software and gaming demos. A playable demo of Frequency and Madden 2003 (you can play online with both). And video demos of a few other games. Also, you can send in a card for a free copy of Twisted Metal Black Online (or whatever it's going to be called).
You will need 137 (187?) KB of space on your PS2 8MB memory card for the adapter settings. So, keep that in mind. Also, if you plan on using the Ethernet connection and not the modem connection, buy a Ethernet cable if you don't have any laying around at home.
I didn't open the SOCOM packaging but I'm sure the headset is in there. The box (yes an actual box) is doubly wide. So it must be in there.
So, instead of going online with SOCOM, I ended up starting Mark of Kri.
Mark of Kri is a lot of fun! It's like Othello. A minute to learn, a lifetime to master!
We should definitely hook up a GR swat team for SOCOM!

NFL 2K3 is sweet...We played tons of NFL2K on the original dreamcast and 2K3 hasn't let us down yet.
Haven't tried online play but I've read it's the same style as Dreamcast online play (chat, online stats, etc.) We probably won't get the Network Adaptor until next year (too many other games to play and we're going online with our Gamecube first--PSO!!!).
We've outgrown Madden after their bad years before the 2K games came out. EA seemed to improve Madden only after lots of people moved over to the 2K series. I'm sure if there was no 2K, Madden would suck from no competition.
Can't wait for NBA2k3... we played it every day at E3.

I searched all over Hollywood today for SOCOM and a network adapter. GAME MANIA had SOCOM, so i got that there, then i went to Best Buy, Toys R Us & Circuit city to find the network adapter. Circuit City advertised it in the Newspaper but didn't even have a place for it or know what I was talking about!!! How exasperating!

more on Mark of Kri: it has this really cool sneak system; you are this big barbarian guy with a pet crow, and can you send the crow to different points in the level, look through its eyes to find the enemies, then sneak up and break their necks from behind. i always liked the sneaky games, like Thief for the pc...and metal gear solid...

I'm too lazy to check for the CNN or Wired story from last week where they interviewed the guy running Sony's Online strategy.
Basically (from what I can recall), they only made about 400,000 units and are hoping to build it up. They got that figure from the 425,000+ users that make up their Everquest market.
I hope, from the sound of it, that they miscalculated and will realize that the console online market is not a "small" thing.

From what I had read, Sony planned an initial shipment to the US of 250,000 units on release day with a total of 400,000 units by year end.
Maybe they weren't sure what demand would be like or they wanted to drive up demand?

Yes! The sneaking around aspect of this game is so much fun!
Also, the final battle is worth the price of this game alone! Fighting 10 zombies at a time with that huge battle axe was kick-ass!
Now, I have to go back through and meet all of the level challenges.

It's misleading... Screen shots always look like shit.
I've read about a new (or remake?) Final Fantasy Tactics for the ps2? I can't seem to find any info on it. Does anyone have any links?

I just read something about FF Tactics in Game Informer magazine. But, I thought it was about a version for GBA?
Now I'm not so sure.... But I think it was for the ps2. I hope so because FF tactics was one of the best games for the psx.

Haven't played .hack, but I picked up Ratchet & Clank. At first I thought I made a big mistake by buying a "Teen" rated game since it's so cartoony looking. But, I gotta say it's a helluva fun game due to all the different weapons and gadgets one can acquire. Before this, the only type of games I was playing was the really violent stuff. Ratchet & Clank is definitely a breath of fresh air.
On a sidenote, I haven't picked up Devil May Cry 2 due to all the luke warm reviews it's been getting. That was disappointing since I was looking forward to it. I think the next game I'll get is Splinter Cell for PS2. There are some new levels added to this version on top of the ones available on the xbox version.

I picked up .hack on Wednesday and after about 8 hours in I'm really into it. It's not the graphics or the gameplay but the story itself. The whole point of view where you're a character playing a character in a MMORPG is really cool and off the beaten path. Now that I have the hang of the battle/command system (since I have no experience in online roleplaying) I find the battles much less of a chore and something I actually feel like I have control over. I've read it's on the short side though so people may want to rent this before they buy. But with my fetish for leveling up length won't be a problem.

Well, I agree with the reviewers .hack is short but sweet, I finished it in about 16 hours...the last boss kicked my ass a few times. When you beat the game you can keep playing and a few extra quests are opened, but I still havent finished them. And I'm trying to unlock all the books of Ryu.

I didn't really think much of Freedom Force as a RPG either. There wasn't that much character development or personal involvement with the characters. I saw it more as a strategy game.
I'm still plugging away at .Hack but if u have your heart set on a RPG fix Xenosaga will be out at the end of the month. The remixed Skies of Arcadia is also a good pickup if you have a Gamecube. I played the orginal on the Dreamcast but the new GC version has lots of new stuff.

I'm an Insider. Here's the quickie info:
Closing Comments
Dark Cloud 2 takes the standard sequel road and gives us everything that made the original Dark Cloud great, only bigger and better. Actually, I take that back. Dark Cloud 2 takes everything great from the original Dark Cloud and super sizes it, up sizes it, and then king sizes it just for good measure. The leap in quality between the two games really is amazing. From the incredible graphics, to the great sound, to the refined gameplay, Dark Cloud 2 just oozes of quality and polish. It truly feels like that game that Level-5 always wanted to make with the first Dark Cloud.
As good as this game is, it's not for everyone, especially those who were not fans of the original's dungeon crawling and town building. Because many of the same gameplay elements made their way from the first game, you're still going to get a similar experience, although it'll be a lot prettier this time around. But, if you're main complaints about the first game involved small details, like the frequent breaking of your weapons, or it's lackluster graphics, then definitely give Dark Cloud 2 a try. It fixes almost every problem found in the first game and then adds some sugar coating on top.
In the end, Dark Cloud 2 is a superb RPG that doesn't disappoint. Buy it, play it, then play it some more. You can thank me later.

Presentation
The superb opening credits and cinemas found early in the game make this game feel like a million bucks. Plus, there are a ton of options placed in some incredibly slick menus.
9.0
Graphics
Quite possibly one of the best looking games out on any system. What's not to like?
9.5
Sound
Great music and good voices litter the game at all times. It just could have used a little more oomph...
8.5
Gameplay
A great mix of several somewhat related genres, along with some new ideas thrown in for good measure. The best part is, it all works beautifully together.
9.0
Lasting Appeal
A lengthy quest, customizable weapons and vehicles, good mini-games, and goals for every dungeon that yield special medals when met make this game worth playing for hours on end.
9.0
OVERALL SCORE (not an average)
9.0

I think the American title was Jo-Jo's Bizarre Adventure. It came out here before on either the PS1 or Dreamcast. I think this is a sequel.
As far as Auto Modelista, from what I've read the Japanese reviews weren't too great. I think the gameplay was the hangup since the graphics look great and the fact you can play online makes it sound all the more promising. I think people got too spoiled by Gran Turismo and they found the AM gameplay to be too basic.
Dark Cloud 2 Has gotten great reviews. I'd be all over it but right now I have my heart set on finishing .HACK.
Red Elephant
02-21-2003, 04:44 AM
I had the chance to play Auto Modellisto a few months ago. Great graphics, but after a few moments it just begins to feel like a cel shaded version of Tokyo Extreme battle. The racing is not like TXB though, it's your basic multiple cars trying to be first. For fans of Initial D there's an uphill stage. The voice that's always yelling "Speed Up!" every five seconds gets old. Lacks Innovation, but i'm sure they'll learn from this and the next one will be what people wanted in the first place.

Yup, I watched it. The DVD is supposed to take place concurrently with the game same universe, same time frame, similar story (player falls into a coma) but no real crossover with the game aside from some keywords you can use with the game.

Speaking of story-driven racing games... I'm kinda looking forward to Midnight Club II. Never played the first one but this sequel is definitely intriguing. That and Auto Modellista. That just looks like a slick game.

Ah, Winning Eleven 6. I forgot about that one; thanks for reminding me. I heard that they didn't license the players so you have to input the players' names manually or d/l the save file if you have a sharkport? If that's true, do the players look like the real-life counterparts?

From what I can tell only some of the players aren't legit, in particular the South American ones. I haven't played France yet, but Italy, England and Japan are all there... So it looks like Europe and Japan are accounted for.

I just finished playing Silent Hill 2 and it was a short but fun romp. At first it seemed lame and not scary, but then things picked up after the loooooong 5 min walk just to get to the town from where you start the game.

I heard that too...some players have said there's not enough tracks.
I do love the graphics and every screen shot of the garage can stand on its own as artwork.
The lines on the car artwork are really cool.
I'll support online play if they can figure out how to penalize quitters. Nothing worse than playing against someone and having them quit right before they lose (or when they know they have no chance).

Hey, you were at E3 last year too? Don't mean to crap on the game, but it didn't seem that good at E3 last year. But then again it was the japanese version that apparently got bad reviews or was an early build of the same thing. Art is awesome, but i just hope it has a lot of depth to go with it.

I look forward to E3 more than the SD Comic Con...can't wait to go this year.
E3 plans...can't wait to see what Nintendo will do for us this year. I won a wavebird last time but I didn't win a GBA the year before. My biz partner and I are replaying Pikmin so we can play against each other at the Nintendo Booth...Pikmin 2 baby!
As for MMOs...I can't stand Everquest and I'm not sure about FF11. I do love playing PSO still. I heard it's pure hell trying to level up in FF11 and you can't do much alone. The good thing about FF11 is you can only play it online which should prevent people from cheating. Cheating ruins games like PSO.
Back to E3...I hope they Mario Golf or Tennis had online gameplay. My favorite multiplayer game right now is Zelda Four Swords. Wish it was online. Oh, and it will be the best E3 ever if Nintendo announces Animal Crossing 2 or.... Kid Icarus!

I have a PS2 network adapter. I have SOCOM, Madden 2003, and NBA2K3.
I haven't played SOCOM online. I've played Madden 2003 online twice. Both times was with a friend in Cleveland. But, one or both of us kept getting dropped off the server (we both have broadband connections). We both got frustrated with that and haven't tried again since...
I'm all for online play. But, the main feature I would like to see made more available is downloadable roster updates for sports titles. Some have it, some don't. Some only provide it specifically for online play rosters only, though.

Oops, I forgot...
Though I haven't bought it for PS2, I did buy WSB 2K3 for Xbox. Last year, I played High Heat 2003 for PS2.
Overall, I have to say that WSB is a better game. Not to say that it didn't take SOME time to get as familiar with WSB as I was with High Heat. For instance, I've never played with cursor-based batting. I loved (or was more comfortable/familiar) with High Heat's timed and direction batting method. So, that's the method I'm using on WSB2K3.
I will probably rent EA's MVP 2003 when I manage to find it at the local video store for comparison. It's the only other baseball game that I've been intrigued by.

and its very cool. Like everyone is saying , .hack part two is just as short as the first one, but my perception of its size might be distorted by the fact that I know it is in four installments. I can't help feelin a little ripped off at $50 a pop. But the story is so engrossing I can't wait for the next one!

The next few weeks makes me wish I had more cash for videogames,
theres F-zero GX for the gamecube,
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness for the ps2,
Final Fantasy Tactics for the GBA,
Soul Calibur II for both systems...
and .hack part 3 for the ps2...

Soul Calibur II!!!
As of late, I've been playing Madden 2004 occasionally.
But, I've become obsessed with MVP 2003 on Xbox again! So, I've been playing that more than Madden.

Yeah, I remember reading about that not too long ago. Sounded like an interesting concept.
Gamepro.com had a hands-on article about the upcoming Spawn game.
And, The Simpsons: Hit & Run still sounds like it could be good.

I'm prob going to get graffiti kingdom. It seems like the concept is similar to Magic Pengel (game involving creatures that you draw) but more like an rpg. (july 26th)

Killer 7 for the GC .
Also the other resident evil for GC(0 and 1) if you haven't tried them yet. I think you can get them in a box set now.

In my opinion, the game has flaws, but it's originality and style more than make up for it.

played killer7 for the first time last night and have serious mixed emotions.
the movement controls are simply horrendous, pointing to specific directions gets to be a royal pain in the asscrack real quick. severely worse when smiles are approaching from lord knows what direction and you cant see them until they blow you up.
it does look good tho and the changing personalities aspect is apparently exeecuted well altho i just started...
i like it but am salty at the controls
