Not as unpromising as English. Plus, whenever I tell people I major in English, their first question is "So, are you going to teach?". Irritates the hell out of me.

Haven't declared anything yet. I love photography but want to move towards film because you can do so express so much more with moving images. Making children's books would be rad too.

actually i don't work in the golf industry anymore. never even did, tried going pro in japan. but that was it. the golf industry blows!
These cats that I used to DJ with got me into playing golf. I stood out like a sore thumb but I didnt give a fuck. It was funny cuz I would rip shit to their disbelief. I really dont golf anymore though. I'll hit some balls sometimes. Shit is too bitched out for me. And if you're single, the golf course is the last place to look at women.

Actually this is a touchy subject between XtremeAche and myself. You see, she is the mother of our baby, Shampoo. One night of unbridled passion without protection resulted in us having a bouncing bundle of joy. But later I found out that Xtreme was sleeping around with all my homeboys...and she was not sure if I was the father. Anyhow, the bloodtests showed I was the papa, but the court awarded her custody of our love child Shampoo. Ever since we have been on non-speaking terms, and I've been ordered by the court to stay away from both of them. I hope to one day be reunited with my family [a single tear falls down my face]!

film would be a cool major. unfortunately my school only offers film appreciation, special topics in film and literature to film, all of which i've taken, am taking, and will take next sem. children's books would be a cool thing. we had a class but it was on saturday mornings at 8. yeah right.
started out a bio major, with a minor in turntablisms...
changed to computer science, minored in theatre arts..with an emphasis in pRon...
i did my undergraduate work in anthropology, and liked it so much i'm doing my graduate work there too.
i think college should be less about getting a job (how many papers out there have classified ads looking for anthropologists?) and more about learning about the things that interest you or learning how to do what you love. anthropolgy classes were the only ones that didn't bore me to tears. and i also think it's important to note that it isn't just colleges that prepare and educate people. i know lots of rocking, smart folk who never graduated from anything.
so i'm about 3 months away from graduating. i'm doing my thesis on local graffiti writers and their culture, also the effects of police/policy on their lives and work. graffiti rules! more people should take over public space in such creative ways.

I'm really interested in your thesis on graffiti because I too think "graffiti rules!" I once wrote a paper on the compare/contrast of advertisement and graffiti. Anyways, is their anyway I could get a copy of that?

I'm bringing this thread back just because I'm curious.
I'm at that point in school where people ask, "Have you decided on a major yet?" (I will start my 3rd year in the fall) and I have to say, "Well I'm getting 2 majors, one is in piano performance and the other might be in linguistics."
Then they just look confused and make me feel crappy about not ever being able to make money to survive, ever. Especially when I tell them that no, I don't have aspirations to becoming a concert pianist, no, I do not want to teach piano to little kids, and no, I do not know what kind of job you can get with a linguistics degree.
And then they say "Well what are you going to do?" and all I can do is shrug and wish they would stop talking.

i graduated with a psychology major and music minor (sort of, i took all the classes, fulfilled the requirements, but forgot to turn in the card... it doesn't go on your diploma anyways, so whatever).
i also took alot of studio art classes...
it's been a year and a couple months since i graduated... weird.
your major doesn't really matter... just study whatever interests you.

ive been out of school as long as i was in. i majored in comparative lit and linguistics and have so far worked as a:
*customer service rep at a now failed dotcom (i got great stock)
*personal caretaker of people with cerebral palsy
*web developer
*various other menial temp jobs not worth mentioning
ive also traveled quite a bit, moved back to my parents house twice, and have had a few periods of depressing unemployment darkened further by a general feeling of impotence and lack of ability. but i also feel that i have taste, brains, am open-minded, have a good deal of experience in the world, and haven't totally allowed market forces to crush my soul. i also know the difference between true literature and oprah book club garbage.
now i want to go back to school and do an mfa. and in...guess what? graphic design! so damn original.
started as a bio major (brainwashed by the parents). eventually changed to computer science (senior), got a job (that said they'd pay for my school.....), they didn't tell me i'd be working 12 hour dayz (sometimes), nuff said.....

i think i'm majoring in english language and literature with a french language minor for secondary education. i just got senior status after last term, yet i still have to apply to the college of ed.
i just took my basic skills test last week which will determine if i can get into the college of ed. i think i failed.
i really wish i would've taken spanish in highschool instead of french, but my reasoning was that being in michigan we're so close to canada that maybe i would have to use it someday. oh well. it's too late now.

I graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering, and I'm teaching Kindergarten. It's the only logical conclusion, captain.
Chemistry... cause genetics scared me off from biology. History I love but my family would look down on me for that.. they want something in the sciences. Pharmacy seems to be something reasonable to get into, but I dont look forward to doing it.

Engineers are just alien to me. They seem to take so many difficult classes, and their earning potential doesnt seem all that great. Pre-pharmacy stuff seems a lot easier than what engineers have to go through.
clarification: for all the scary-sounding classes they have to take, I would hope that engineers would make more.

Majoring in Development Studies-Allows me to travel (to Vietnam) and have the classes count towards my degree as well as studying a language (Vietnamese!! WOOHOO!) And I get to read about Malthus, Marx and all those other old white guys with last names that start with 'M.'
Minoring in Creative Writing because this is what I actually like doing, creating stuff.
Undergraduate major honestly doesn't matter to me anymore, like it did my first two years in college. It's all about work experience and just living it up and learning from life outside of the classroom.
It's all about LIFE, the everyday, everyone major! My university is the world! [Sounds like this could be said on a PBS Teenage Special]

for undergrad i was a langauge major with concentrations in Japanese and Spanish. i started with the intention of doing a polysci/soc double major and film minor, took a bunch of fun upper division classes frosh year, then realized i had to take stats and methodology and the American Senate and other junk and so i changed to lang.
had to drop the film minor in order to graduate in four years
now i am 6 months [and a thesis] from an MA in intl relations with a concentration on cultural anthropology/music
i am currently applying for phd programs in anthro....but starting to have doubts/anxiety as to whether thats what i want to do withthe next 5-7 years of my life. maybe i should work instead.
also trying to decide where i want to live....a phd in japan will be free and only take 3 years, but it aint worth much in N america. if i get in to where i want in the states i will be back though, i guess.....
why anthro?
i grew up around it [dad and grandpa are/were archaeologists], it offers a non-corporate way to use my japan knowledge and language skills, i can study things i am interested in [currently hardcore music and lowriders], there are possibilities to rock photo/film/art aspects as well!

I'm not talking about the doctorate program.. just the pre-pharmacy requirements. Perhaps it's the fact that there is so much math in Engineering, and math is something I need to be doing continously in order to do well (last took a math class last fall).
I am an Asian American Studies major. and haha course I can't be in it for the money. I want to educate the world about the history and on going struggles of Asian Americans. I also hope to make a difference in my own community, and give something back as well.

cool. in a way i do some industrial design, actually it's more architectural. i do alot of detailed shop drawings for signs (illuminated etc) for the company i work for (mostly international hotel chains, exterior & interior signage). it's cool to get super detailed about what you are proposing to build. the gen fab guys are always suprised when i come up to them and ask just how exactly they propose building this what-have-you. i don't know, but before i came on board the favorite mantra in the art department was "let gen fab figure it out." that's not good enough for me. i wanna know everything i can about the drawing i'm creating.

I watched a news special on nursing. It seems America has a shortage of them. People are not attracted to the field. They don't get paid enough for the amount of work they do. This means eirher nurses will begin to get higher pay and more benifits, ot hospitals will bring in help from other countries which some are already doing. This is according to the news special. Interesting. I agree with Caffiend. Nursing is something I could never do, tuff stuff.

50k-90k does sound really great. However, my dad used to be a chemical engineer, and he would constantly get laid off. He gave it up and went back to school. I have 5 uncles/aunts who were once engineers, and none of them stayed as engineers any longer than a couple of years. I guess it's not in my blood. Pharmacists make about that same amount too. OK, I have no pharmacist relatives, but I have heard that it can be a tedious job at a pharmacy.
dang where are you guys seeing these jobs? i have friends who graduated in all sorts of engineering, chem, indus, biomed, etc, and i know only two of them that got jobs so far, decent but not in the 60k range like you folks are talking about..some of them i know they start off low, but end up makin big bucks
as for nurses, yeah well i kinda agree with the notion that we dont get paid enough. dont get me wrong, i can get by with what im making, and again even if they bumped up our salaries, it still wouldnt really attract that many more people into the field imo, alot of it is still the perception whether right or wrong as to what a nurse has to do..

I took like 175 credits by the time I graduated cuz my original school and NYU, the school I transfered to, both had their core classes I HAD to take, PLUS, I took tons of electives while deciding on a major - which ended up being screenwriting. So I owe enough money now to buy a used Ferrari. Need to finish a script. I don't envy the business guys who're making some money at all except for when we go to a bar together and they don't think twice before buying an expensive drink.

One of my former professors told me that I would be better off with this major because I could land a job in the private sector, education or government...boy was he wrong. Do yourself a favor and major in something you can use. I now possess a useless degree that cost me $35,000, whoohoo.
Mech1, what do you do for a living (if you don't mind me asking)? Looks we both made the same mistake, mine was just more costly. My useless EAS degree is "worth" about $120,000. 'Course it only cost about $16-20,000. Hey, seeing that typed in front of me now, that really stings. I'm going to go to sleep before I get the urge to look for a rope and a chair.

I know several Computer Science majors that are out of work and can't get jobs or even interviews right now. At least some of you guys enjoyed the college experience more than a lot of my friends.

Most of my friends graduated 5-6 years ago. Most are still working. I know lots of incompetent people working and a few highly competent people not working. I was mainly referring to the later. I enjoyed the experience, in a sort of twisted way, but it was a ton of work getting the degree. Not much free time for extra activities (on the other hand I did graduate with my BS degree in 3 years because of money constraints). The sad thing is many of the highly incompetent people lost there jobs first and were able to get another job with some of the more competent ones (in the work place at the wrong time) lost their jobs too late.

architecture
i'm in my first year
i like it. loooooong nights and days. conceptual more than practical right now.
when i think of things, i usually always create a methodology and reasoning behind it. i think in step-by-step, but within this methodolgy, i am creative in what i produce.
i like to be organized and make lists.
i'm good at math and science. i enjoy the study of psychology and sociology which are relative to architecture (at least i think so).
i can 'think' spacially.
i like to be challenged.
i don't really like to speak publically or work with others... which is supposedly imperative in this field, but i'll adapt.
i do like to discuss... which is imperative too.

Electrical Engineering.
Well, it was. Now I'm just an electrical engineer... who manages people and equipment... And documents new equipment settings and stuff from time to time... Sad thing is that my job isn't EE intensive, and I've been going into withdrawal.... =P

You know what I do? I get paid to sit at home. I listen to albums. Take a walk. Make some food. Pretend to be cool. My only studying consists of reading some books reccomended to me. Excuse me . . . I have to let my cat in.

Getting bachelors in urban planning, considering either finishing then a masters in architecture, or transfering to a school with a bachelors in architecure, then getting the masters (which is faster).

Tell your computer Science friends to move to OC SoCal. Both I and my friends keep getting offers for 100k+ for .net programmers. Plenty of computer science jobs here.
The problem is, I know a lot of lazy programmers who do not know the latest stuff and are stuck in the same tech that they graduated in and they limit themselves.
