View Full Version : Tourist Spots In Your Hood You've Never Seen

Over in the Philly Bots thread awhile ago, I was telling Kimchee Girl, et al. about the Mütter Museum, a bizarre medical museum she'd never hear of, much less been to. And I was thinking that there must be loads of tourist spots or cool points of interest in everybody's neighborhood that they've never been to.
Here's mine: I've never been to House on the Rock (http://www.houseontherock.com). It's this odd house in Spring Green, WI that Frank Lloyd Wright designed that has all of these weird colllections in it. And yeah, it's built on a rock. Duh. I've heard that it's cool as hell and that you can waste an entire day looking at all of the swag they've got there. It's less than an hour away from Madison and I've never made any plans to check it out. One of these days, I guess...
How about you?

Casa Loma here in downtown Toronto.
I believe it's an old Spanish castle from WAAAY back in the day... Now it's a tourist spot/trap and was the site for Xavier's School for Gifted Children in the first X-Men movie.
Never ever been there, maybe one day.

Here in NYC, there are tons of places I haven't been. Ones that stick out in my mind:
Museum of Natural History
Museum of Television and Radio
Statue of Liberty (I might've gone as a kid but I have no recollection of it)
The Cloisters
Coney Island
When living in the SF Bay area:
Alcatraz
Winchester Mystery House
Pez Museum
That sake brewery in Berkeley
When living in Socal/LA:
Museum of Jurassic Technology (though to be fair, I don't think it existed when I lived there)
Norton Simon

Lived in NYC my whole life, at the ripe old age of 27 I never been to the Statue of Liberty. Don't want to go either. First went to the Empire State at 19.
People never pay attention to local stuff. I visited a friend in Colorado Springs, she had no idea which mountains were what. When I was in New Zealand, I asked the family I was staying with what was the name for the birds that lived on their beach outside their house. They had no clue.

I've been to the Ronald Reagan Library... only presidential library I've ever been to.
The thing I want to see, that I can't remember seeing when I was a kid are the canals in Venice Beach.

In Hawaii, I never been to the PCH or the Arizona Memorial.
In Bay Area never been to Alcatraz.
I have been to the Winchester House and man is that a fucking rip off. if the tour was led by an actual ghost I'd still feel gyped.
Kinda want to see Mystery Spot and San Simeon.

Growing up in L.A., I've been to a lot of places as a kid that I haven't been to in a long time.
Places I have yet to hit up:
Norton Simon Mueseum
Watts Towers
Los Angeles City Hall (newly renovated)
not sure if I've been to L.A. County Mueseum of Art yet
Gamble House in Pasadena
Japanese Garden at Sepulveda Rec. Area
Places I haven't been to in a long time and would like to hit up again:
Olvera Street
Hollywood Bowl
Catalina Island
Santa Anita Racetrack
Huntington Library and Gardens
I've been to S.F. many times, but I still haven't done these things yet on my wishlist:
Walk across the GG Bridge
Go to the top of Coit Tower
See the old Chinese Immigration station on Angel Island
Ride a trolley on Market Street

you should check out the mystery spot; it's touristy in a non-cheesy way, and the drive's pretty relaxing.

I finally went to House On The Rock a couple of years ago. It was very meh (not to mention damp & totally run-down). It's still cool that Neil Gaiman worked it into "American Gods", though.
i've never been on a duck tour. ever.

Wait, they got those corny "duck tours" in other cities? Weird, I thought they only have that crap at Wisconsin Dells: http://www.wisconsinducktours.com/ .
Speaking of ducks, I didn't go see the ducks at the Peabody when I visited Memphis. Didn't go to Graceland, either. As far as I'm concerned, Elvis can suck a big bag of dicks. The only thing I regret not visiting is the Rev. Al Green's church. :(
elvis blows. and i thought duck tours were exclusive to boston :( fuck, is our city truly good for nothing?? nothing except half-assedly educating guidos from jersey so they can move out of our state to take shitty middle-management jobs?
Duck shit is in Philly too. I hate that. But it serves me right for going to South Street.
I still haven't eaten at Morimoto. But that's mostly a money issue.

I've never been to Alcatraz, walked across the golden gate bridge, been to coit tower, or rode on a cable car.
