Anyone have any favorite places to get pesto? Or maybe you like using it in strange and unusual ways?

I like it so much I'd spoon it straight outta the container if it wasn't for the fact that it would make me feel like I was eating Gerber baby food.

The other week I had a pizza with pesto and shrimp from Allegria in Malibu and it was so good I ate the whole thing. :p

pesto is good on sammiches, use instead of mayo (which is gross!) or mustard

i dunno, maybe i have been over-mayoed as a kid but i just really do not like the stuff. and at school we learned how to make it from scratch, which really makes you want to stay away from it.

well when we used to have a blender i'd make it there. but i have a friend who just chops everything up really good so you can do it either way. the first time i ever made it i had no clue what i was doing and cooked the sauce and everything ended up being this big black mess.

i just take fresh basil, garlic, pignoli nuts, olive oil (extra virgin) and parmesan cheese and just put it all in a blender. you gotta wash the blender out real good afterwards so it doesn't smell like garlic.

i love pesto!

it's great with pasta and i love it on toasted bread too. so delicious!

i like both the green and red (i don't know flavor names!) kinds of pesto. i've never made my own before, i always get the one straight out of a jar. there's a really good brand that you can get here in the UK, but i've never seen it sold in the States.

talking about pesto on bread... i also love taking a dish and pouring olive oil and balsamic vinegar in it, and using bread to soak it up. mmmm.....

i think ciabatta bread works best with both pesto and olive oil/vinegar.

I made my own pesto from scratch in college once... I ran out of olive oil so it ended up more like paste than a sauce. It was still pretty tasty, tho!

add some lemon zest (remove the seeds) and you'll have lemon pesto! spread liberally on chicken breast and bake it in the oven. mmm mmm good

pesto fettucine with clams. the best! i love pesto oh so much more than any other sauce.

i could easily eat a medium size pesto and mushroom pizza by myself in one sitting. and i'm a pretty thin guy.

someone should make a pesto turkey for thanksgiving this year.

If you somehow end up with seeds while adding lemon zest, you really need to buy a different kind of lemon :D

Pesto May Be Carcinogenic If Basil Plant Small, La Stampa Says
2004-11-04 04:53 (New York)

By Alina Trabattoni
____ Nov. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Pesto, an Italian pasta sauce, may be
carcinogenic if the basil plant used to make it is less than 10
centimeters (3.9 inches) high, Italian newspaper La Stampa
reported, citing comments made by Francesco Sala, professor of
botany and plant biotechnology at Milan University.
____ Small basil plants contain ``cancer-causing agent''
methyleugenol, which turns into a harmless substance as the herb
grows, Sala said, according to La Stampa. Sala spoke at a
conference on genetically modified foods in Milan and cited tests
carried out on pesto sauces.
____ Sala said he tested home-made pesto sauce containing ``young
leaves'' and found the methyleugenol levels to be almost 600
times the daily allowance permitted in the U.S. Supermarket-
bought pesto made with leaves from large basil plants was found
to contain no methyleugenol, Sala said.
____ Pesto sauce is usually made of fresh basil leaves, garlic,
pine nuts, olive oil and grated cheese.

i made pesto last night, but it seems to be lacking a certain 'zing'..

garlic, olive oil, pine nuts, salt, basil..

i think maybe it needed more or better quality garlic..

parmesan?

where's the parmesan?
