Anyone into BLACK METAL? (you have to scream it and bang your head everytime you say it)
Cradle of Filth
Mayhem
Old Man's Child
Marduk
Dimmu Borgir
Emperor
I love this shit. Everytime I put on Mayhem, I feel like I've been ravished by a female bodybuilder. It's great.

and contrary to all you may have read, most people who are into black metal are just nice regular people who likes to put on 10 inches spikes and breathe fire at shows on the weekends...and yes, I have friends who paint their faces. they think it's a laugh, have to agree with them.

I don't know anyone who truly takes Black Metal seriously. In fact, I think that the only metal that was ever taken seriously (and rightfully so) was early Metallica. The goofiness of Black Metal is what's fun about it. You can live out your D&D nerd fantasies through it. I love it. It's great fun, and get's out a lot of aggression. I also happen to think that it's some of the most interesting music out there. And you gotta take Mayhem somewhat seriously. They ate their fuckin' drummer's brain for God's sake!

All types of stupid shit.
Rock the patch on the denim vest with a leather jacket underneath, and some spikes, some hightop Reeboks, and a pack of Marlboro reds in the flip-top box. Whoa!

When I first heard Slipknot, I was like, "Holy shit! What the fuck is this? It kicks ass!" That entire night, I wa on a buzz. I had never listened to anything thaat hard before and it totally blew my mind. I thought I was going to wake up tommorow knowing that I had killed five people and an old lady or something. I just had all these images and emotions flooding my neurons, nearly giving me an aneurysm.

Get Wolf's Lair Abyss or Live In Leipzig. Not for the faint of heart. These might give you nightmares, so be prepared. Ya' know, keep a crucifix by your bed and hang some garlic around your neck. And after each listen, pray to God for forgiveness.

ok, ive been listening to a lot of death in the past year and slipknot are pussies compared to what i listen to. Try Strapping Young Lad, Death, Meshuggah, Cannibal Corpse, My Dying Bride, Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower, Skinlab, The Haunted, Morbid angel, Nile, In Flames, 40 Grit, Soulfly, Damaged, Control Denied, Earth Crisis, Agaugefor, Armored saint, Stuck Mojo, Abramelin, Frankenbok, Machine Head, Rob Zombie (my list goes on seriously...)
Phew, That enough death for ya?

I'm so ashamed. I listened to Cannibal Corpse at the urging of a rather intelligent friend who ONLY listens to black metal and classical. He's a freak. But actually - i laughed my ass off a lot listening to them.
How about Gwar? Do they count? At least their shows are cool D&D geekfests.

I don't know about not taking it seriously. I dunno if Deicide counts, but I was at a show next door to a Decide show and when the Deicide show got out a lot of spillover came to the joint I was in, and there were a lot of stupid fucking meatheads who seemed to take it pretty goddamn seriously. I cannot imagine listening to it as a joke for more than about 10 minutes in any case. No different than someone like GG Allin. How many times can you listen before it gets stale?

I don't listen to black metal as a joke. I just realize that it's entertainment. I also happen to think that black metal musicians are some of the best and most intense musicians around.
Black metal is a subgenre of metal. Deicide does not count. See the bands I listed in the first post. Those are BLACK METAL.

Some BM bands I like:
Absu
Marduk
Mayhem
...And Oceans
earlier Tiamat
Sigh (even though they're not strictly "black metal")
Like mewmew, I think the overly Satanic evil imagery and corspepaint (as well as the ridiculous pseudo-Nazi posturing) are corny, but some of the bands are cool musically.

fuck, this was in definate need of a resurgence =). black metal ive been listening to lately is mainly dimmu borgir and emperor, although dimmu is more ummm...dark symphonic metal. Is Zyklon black metal? their themes are more futuristic than what black metal is usually about. i know they have 2 members of emperor, so thats probably a dead giveaway.
looking back at that post i made is shameful lol. i had no real knowledge about sub genres of metal or music back then. terrible. oh, and good australian black metal band is Sakkuth, check em out.

there's a lot of non-black metal in this thread.
i like metal that doesn't have much treble. growls and double bass pedal and shit. i rarely give a damn about a guitar solo in any genre.

Anaal Nathrakh are from the same pool of musicians (from Birmingham, England) as the brilliant Mistress - who are like an updated take on the classic grindcore sound... their album 'In Disgust We Trust' is rocking my world at the moment. I am also very happy to see that Napalm Death are on their 10th album, and have collaborated with Jello Biafra :)

i'm not tryin to classify them into any genre of metal, but i've been listening to the new Doomdriver album and it kicks ASS . . . also "Throwdown" by Vendetta - i had a rental car all last weekend and the only thing they had was a black Dodge Ram 1500, so all week i was blasting metal and riding around with my trucker hat on . . . i really wish i had gotten a pic of me in the bed of the truck with my guitar . . . =p

Yeah, the pics are funny. But Blizzard Beasts was on his top 10 worst black metal album list.
Oh, I didn't see that. I have to get some more Immortal.
wait, so why is Immortal Black Metal? They don't have the keyboards or the operatic vocals. Is what I've been calling Black Metal something else?

yes.
What is it?! What then makes metal "Black" if not the keys. Is it just the makeup? I'm serious.
hm.

I don't know. My understanding of it comes from Black metal radio shows, that focus on the keyboard stuff.

Bands like Darkthrone, Mayhem, Burzum, and Immortal invented black metal, and none of them had keyboards. Basically, metal heads in Norway got sick of the the pomposity of technical death metal of the late 80s and early 90s. They saw that their death metal heroes were just normal guys who wore sweatpants and didn't really practice "evil." They saw death metal as being kind of like prog rock -- more focused on flashy, complicated riffage and cliches than actually making music that frightened and offended. They looked to older, thrash acts like Venom, Mercyful Fate, Celtic Frost, and Bathory as inspiration. Euronymous of Mayhem was one of the first to promote an ethos of raw, almost punk simplicity, with lots of treble, and screechy, ear-piercing vocals (as a direct reaction against the low death growl of death metal). The emphasis was more on being abbrasive than on wowing people with musical acrobatics. Eventually, bands like Emperor, Enslaved, and Burzum started using keyboards to add some atmosphere, and then commercial bands like Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir took the keyboards to the next level into a sort of Yanni-esque bombast that hardcore black metal fans abhor (although I think Dimmu Borgir's Enthrone Darkness Triumphant is a killer album). To be sure, the line between black and death metal is often very blurry. Even though Mayhem and Darkthrone were very punk and raw, other progenetors of the genre maintained a sense of musical complexity, such as Dissection and even Immortal (the incredible riffs on Blizzard Beasts is one prime example). The only thing that consistently distinguishes black metal is the high-pitched vocals, and it's true that bands that call themselves black metal use keyboards more than any other genre of metal.
(Note: I'm fully aware of how geeky I am)
I was never real into the keyboardy stuff, tho I like Sigh. Here's the show I used to listen to:

Dude does not take himself very seriously, (which I like) but he plays a LOT of Mercyful Fate (which I DO NOT like).
I can't think anymore.

That's brilliantly summed up.
Note that a lot of the Norwegian and Swedish bands have branched into 'dark ambient', either under their own names or as side projects. Apparently more than one BM band also run techno parties/soundsystems.
Also there is a whole new sound of "avant metal" springing from the Black Metal related sound of Khanate and Sunn 0))) and inspired by Pacific Northwest "slow sound" of Melvins and Earth. Heavy, heavy drones and psychotropic growlings.

^Like the Banks Violet show at the Whitney uses an ambient type track from Snorre Ruch, another one of those black metal guys that's in jail for murder. Burzum completely abandoned metal, and also does weird ambient electronic stuff now, but it sucks. Sunn O))) rules, as does Boris and all that crap on Southern Lord. I was really impressed that Jim Jarmusch used Sleep's "Dopesmoker" in Broken Flowers. When I heard that I kicked the guy in front of me accidentally, and I let out a little, girly yelp. I'm totally into the whole epic and slow doom shit.
