Anyone else living here? I've been living here about a year after moving from Florida. It's a great place to visit but have reservations about living here. For one thing, there is NO culture in Vegas. Everything is imported from LA. I'm used to southern hospitality in Florida, but people are just plain mean out here. Half the population moves out within 3 years! So, making friends out here that stick around is hard.

yeah, i've heard Vegas is not a cool place to live. it's not so bad if you're retired because you can just sit in your house all day and then head to the casinos for gambling and buffet dinner. my advice is to save some money and move to LA. at least we have some variety here. in Vegas, you only see gamblers, tourists, and people trying to escape from LA.

Are you single?
What are your interest?
You've been there for about a year; how much of it did you spend exploring the place?
What's your idea of culture?
Which part of Las Vegas are you living in?

Base on this post alone, I believe you rely on others too much in your experience with your environment.

I was in Vegas on July 4th- it was like a weekend in HELL!! I could feel my ears melting down my neck as soon as I stepped outside!
Also, I got heckled by a man with boobs for not being a better Blackjack player (we were at the $5 table!!)

I wouldn't go back unless it was with someone who really knew all the in's and out's. There's just too much info. you need to know in order to have fun (or survive) there.

yea i can't imagine living in vegas...that's too crazy for me. everything is compact and fast-paced it seems. i think the longest i've ever stayed there was for three days partying my ass off.

what i love about vegas:
- you can drink practically anywhere
- smoke anywhere
- go clubbing at almost anytime
- great food/buffets
- nice hotels
- ppl watch/hoe watch too!
- gamble w/o antee

things i don't like about vegas:
- weather
- driving around on the strip when it's crowded
- too many diff ppl there from diff. areas + alcohol consumption = conflict
- gambling
- the ppl who hand out those call-girl mags when you walk by...j/k. :P

yeah, when you walk out of a casino, you smell like like a casino... cigarettes, booze, cheap buffet food. ;)

drinking in public was a strange thing for me. my friends and i were there for a New Years a while back. we got some drinks and proceeded outside. then a cop motions his hand and comes up to us. he said we couldn't have glass containers/bottles. we were going to head back inside the casino to finish the drinks, but the cop said no. he told us to either dump the drinks in the trash, or to finish the drinks in his presence. we chose the latter and proceeded to pound beers in front of this cop. after we dusted the brews, he actually took the bottles and threw them away for us. wow. what a nice guy! i love Vegas. :D

In general, you double down if you have an ace or 10 and the dealer is showing 9 or less (some might say 8 or less). There are other cases but that one is the most basic and easiest to remember.

If you're doing the dollar tables at the Sahara, though, you can do stupid things since the stakes are low. For instance, I would split 10's when the dealer was showing a bust card. People either thought I was stupid or crazy. The logic is that if you think the dealer is going to bust, then might as well maximize your bet. Even if I lost, it was worth seeing the expressions on people's faces when I did it, and hell, it was only $2.

Everytime I've visited Vegas, I've been left feeling mildly bummed out. I suppose it's like seeing the lights go on in a bar late at night. I don't ever find much beauty in the daylight there. That being said, I've only been there as a tourist, so I only ever see the bad buffets, the broke-ass drunks and the grossly wealthy people who eat the place for dinner.

So, I'm at the Tropicana, watching the blackjack tables. i have my little cheat sheet card in my hand and I'm trying to see how closely people follow 'the rules.' The game play is a little too fast for me to closely follow, but I feel like I get it. Besides, back when I was a kid, my parents and I would play Blackjack on the ole Odyssey 2 game console...
Anyway, I'm at the $2 table, looking over people's shoulders, waiting for someone to get up and vacate a seat but it just ain't happening. They're having too much fun.
Whoopla! There's nothing to it, I say to myself. I gotta play.
So, I move over 1 table to the $5 game which onlyhas 2 guys playing. 2 white guys who don't seem to be talking much. And the dealer has a really serious look on his face.
Aw, but what the hell, I gotta play! So, I tuck my cheat sheet away and set down my $5.
OK, the first thing is I'm not allowed to see my cards.
WHAT???? At the other table the cards were dealt face up.
In 'Swingers' the cards were dealt face up.
On the Odyssey 2 the cards were dealt face up.
Not at this table.
You can't see anyone else's hand and you have to tilt your cards up using only one hand, and you can't bend them. WHAT?? How do you do that? I'm clumsily trying to peak at my cards, get a grasp of how this will make things more confusing while having the dealer bark at me like a tired drill instructor about how I'm bending the cards?!?!?! What the FUCKKKKKKKK???!!?!
One of the guys, the bigger one with nice, big manboobs, starts to make some snide comments about how people shouldn't play the game if they don't know the rules.
Needless to say, I lose my $5.
Fine.
Then I'm faced with the choice of getting up and sulking away or trying 1 more time, with a little more grace and composure...
Of course I'm an idiot so I stay.
I tilt my cards a little bit more straight?!? so the dealer doesn't yell at me and again I bust. Mr. Manboobs says, "UCH! I hate it when amateurs sit at my table and throw everything off!"
At this point I stood up and the only decision to make was whether to leave in silence or to smile and say, "Dude, this is the $5 Table!!! If you're such a high roller, why don't you take your tits over to the table where the big boys play?"

of course I just walked away and didn't say a thing.

ah but there are some unwritten rules in blackjack.

i think it's funny that you got to play $5 single deck or double deck. Usually it's a $25 minimum. Thing is they deal em and keep face down because with 1 or 2 decks you could easily count the cards so the house is trying to keep you from doing so. You can't bend the cards for fear that you're trying to mark them by bending creasing or folding them.

The other players were mad at you depending on what you did. In blackjack the idea is that almost every decision is black and white (cept a few) and that EVERY PLAYER must make decisions the same way. Some might put that rule in the same league as pitchers retaliating for beanballs, but i think it's a good rule because losing the right way is much easier to cope with than losing the wrong way. (more explained later)

So i'm not sure what the cards were like when you got chewed out by bitchtits maybe you hit on a risky hand when dealer was showing 6 and under? i get pissed when people do that.

rule #1: taking the "bust card" is no no #'s 1-100.

rule #101:Because the shuffle kind of predetermines who gets what and the rules are fairly strict there's this idea that if a table is winning and there's an empty seat, the lucky shoe will be fucked up if someone comes in and joins mid shoe (shoe being the deck of cards) so out of courtesy you're supposed to wait for shuffle.

rule #101a: jumping in and out of a shoe is considered rude if a table is winning.

when you lose because the cards were unlucky, you can say "oh well that's just the way it goes" but when someone messes it up by hitting on 14 and getting a 10 while the dealer is showing 16, it angers people to no end. i don't know what the odds are that people win more money this way because i've seen it work both ways. but that's the right way to play the game, it's how mean, petty, seasoned veterans play it.

why not just play so that you can drink for free, I usually don't take hits or anything but look for the drinks, where is the cocktail waitress? After pissing everyone off at the tables I go to craps and you can surely chill there for a while without really playing, and lastly the slots I can hang there for an eternity, but the cocktails don't come by as often, to me it is all about the free stuff.

Just got back from a quick vacation to Vegas with my wife. We both came back singing the praises of Paris casino's buffet. Every dish from appetizer to dessert was perfect. For what it's worth, the best buffet we've ever had. The Bellagio and Wynn's buffets were very good, but paled in comparison. I'm so fucking fat now...

We also caught that Cirque du Soleil show "O." It's truly amazing and worth the price of admission. Our floor seats were on the right hand section and they worked out really well. I think the middle of the center section would make the stunts harder to make out.

I went to Vegas a few years back, and enjoyed parts of it, and hated others. My hyperintelligent sister (the bitch) told me that there are no record stores anywhere near the strip. In the hotel next to us there was one, and a short bus ride straight up the strip a mile or three, there is a pretty cool used/new record/dvd store that's twenty four hours.

My sister forced us to go to the Cirque (dejerk) Soliel, because her boyfriend and daughter were into that kind of thing. I really wanted to go to the Wrestling school/show where Scott Casey and Nick Bockwinkel were owners/instructors. I would have rather seen the gymanstic tumbles, and ring and blade work, than what I got to see a boring show with lousy music, a few cute stunts, and an hour and a half of looking at the wrong thing while something cooler was going on. The Clowns came into the audience, and I swear to god I vibed them away from me. I just shot them death glare and stink eye, and they came about two people away from me, and then moved away quickly. I really really hate clowns. All in all, I wish I could have had the hundred and twenty five bucks and a few more hours in the casino. Got a great picture at the show, you can see a big phoney smirk on my face, and a take the God Damned picture look in my eyes! I had a better time, and enjoyed a show in Reno much more, that featured as the star, Adrian Zmed! That's right, TJ Hookers sidekick doing a song and dance review was gloriously gawdawful, as opposed to being some high gloss gymnastic garbage.

Cultural highpoints for me (I like neon and sleaze) were:

Free porn littering the streets,
Walking down the street with my Seventy plus year old Mom, my sister, her boyfriend, and his 11 year cold Daughter, and having guys hand me cards with pictures of escorts, and prices!!
Tacky art, free casino shows, and lot's of lights.

The true cultural highlight was hanging out at, and buying some videos from Ray Dennis Steckler himself! I got Rat Pfink a BooBoo, The lemons kids movie, and two other great movies (They are all his Citizen Kane, according to Mr Steckler). Now after having to sit through the pomp and pretension of Cirque, meeting a filmaking great, talking to him for a half hour, asking him about working with Arch Hall and his Dad, all that made the trip so worth it. It was all by random chance, he just happened to be working at his store that day, he doesn't usually! That was the biggest win I had there!

I can think of no city that sums up the USA as fiercely, and intensely, the hope, the need, the greed, the sleaze, the drama, the nightmare and the American Dream, all wrapped up and rolled into one. Easy to see why it would be so hard to live there!

I'm sorry your having a hard time in Vegas. I moved here about 4 years ago and I feel that it need some culture. I do agree with the Los Angeles culture moving in and it might not nessary mean that's a good thing. Vegas will always be the about pop and cheesy - godd-y culture. I don't agree with you feeling that Vegas the people are mean. Have you visited LA lately? Vegas people are a lot nicer and approachable then big cities. Since it's small town still. Unfortuanlty the people here can't drive just like the copycat city they amulate (LA).

It's best to spend your time in Vegas and head to the libaries, because the city is so small they have a great collection of books, graphic novels, and dvd that is solid gold! Then go get some good food! Alot of east coast and Hawaiian folks have moved out here and you can find great restuarant they started. Maybe you can met people that way. Because it's a growing city the city will have hole just like there roads.

I hope you have an easier time by the fall then the weather is better.

Oh yeah .... if giant robot wants to start a shop and gallery in vegas!!! Please do ! Many will be thankful that the desert island gets some culture and chill shop to hang out! If you open a shop I will volunteer to work helping you set up shop. Vegas is cheaper to live, cheaper to eat , and there no last call, and hungry for culture. Does that sells you?

I agree that if GR ever opened a Vegas store..especially in the Fashion Show mall, or somewhere in Summerlin, GV, or *ick* "Chinatown".. it would do well. We have some interesting cultural organizations here in town that operate on the low, plus all the club stuff, and an up and coming indie scene too.
I recently discovered a sneaker shop in chinatown last week that has like a wall full of dunks and weird shit and the store isnt even marked on the outside or anything. *total accident*
Also Suite 160 on Sahara is kind of the same thing, but more sterile. If you know where to look, there is some cool shit in Vegas! For instance.. there is this anime convention that's in town in September.. here's what I gleamed of their website:

Direct From Japan we have two Very special guests Kouta Hirano the creator of Helsing, and also Hideyuki Kurata creator of Read or Die! We are very excited to have these esteemed guests to our event and encourage you to take this opportunity to meet them in such an intimate setting. There are no conventions in the U.S. that offer such close interaction with it's guests, so be sure to pre-register ASAP!

In addition to our esteemed Guests of Honor we have the following voice actors and stateside talent: Laura Bailey, Troy Baker, Johnny Yong Bosch, Colleen Clinkenbeard, Quiton Flynn, Sandy Fox, Jerry Jewell, Jonathan Klein, Lex Lang, Dominique Martinez, Rich McNanna, Mike McFarland, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, Jeff Nimoy, Jennifer Sekiguchi, Michael Sinterniklaas, Sonny Strait, recording artist Stephanie Yanez and Jim "Gozer" Yee!

In addition to our regular panels, guest signings, cosplay competition and masquerade, we are trying something different with the inclusion of live musical performances by several japanese bands and musicians.

With help from Japanfiles.com we have several performances lined up throughout the weekend. You'll be hearing from Makiko Higuchi, Miami, and Samurai Delicatessen. Also don't miss the dance hosted by our very own DJ Jinnai at the end of the first day of the convention!

Our dealer's room is packed with dealers offering unique opportunities for you to empty your wallets, in addition to hosting our Ghibli movie poster exhibition. We've also expanded our Artist's Alley to showcase more local and regional talent than ever before!

We have a lot planned to keep our attendees happy and we look forward to another great year of memories made at ANIMEVEGAS!

They have more info and pictures and stuff at www.animevegas.com, but that's pretty cool, and kinda cheap for 3 days... I think it would be awesome if GR someday attended that event, we never get anything people actually want here.

I just got back from there yesterday. We went to Studio 54 at MGM Grand. The line to get in was long, but as soon as we got in it was party central. The DJ last Saturday night though seemed too partial with spinning Usher and Michael Jackson (at least most of the music being played was from Off The Wall).

Pretty much the vibe was what they were trying to replicate--the confetti, the cage and platform dancers (man, the abs on both the chicks and dudes...crazy), and the hot chicks on the swings/suspension devices. They try and spin stuff across the board. I had a blast when they played some old Speak and Spell-era Depeche Mode.

Most of the buffets in town are bleh but the best ones cost the most. The Bellagio,Wynn, Mirage and the Paris are good but they cost about $27 a person definately not a place to go everyday.

So, like, is there a foolproof way to go about bachelor's parties in Vega$? Does one even bother calling strip clubs in advance to reserve seating? Will be out there 1st week of March Madness.

At strip clubs we just roll in and claim our spots. I've never called a "Gentleman's Club" for a reservation but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to try. March Madness is very busy in Vegas but the crowds are spread through out the month.

Any opinion on which is the best one? Do they all do that crap with having to slip the bouncer a $20 for seating???

$20 to $100 depending on the size of the party. Better the tip, they will steer more girls your way.
Strip clubs have gone Wally World size, way too much room to get lost when drunk.

ah... well this thread sure is a bummer...

quite interesting to see what people think of my home..

First of all LA culture can go right back. I'm sick of the cast of the OC talking loudly on there cellphones at my favorite little restaraunts. Seriously the traffic here has gotten ridiculous in the last couple years. The Casinos are fun.. well not really fun, but just 24/7 monkeys walking around mulling like zombies always interesting.

Yeah, It's a bit of a transient tourist place, but is seriously what you make of it. It's always fun finding out your co-worker or bank teller is a undercover stripper.

Plus, we got these real interesting pockets of fun, that only real heads know about.

Snowboarding at Lee Canyon.

Illegal car races at midnight.

The first friday. Monthly event of just art and general local fun. We had a record store there for a bit.. talk about an escape from the casino. Ms. Cristina who posted earlier sells all those wonderful paintings at the First Friday. My band even played funk and latin soul last first friday.

Of course this shit is trying to get shutdown, by pathetic rich folk who wanna "MANHATTANIZE LAS VEGAS." But, it's what we got so eh.

Every first friday Mr. John Doe does the Getback a great funk dance party at the Beauty Bar. Also, my crew DJ's every wednesday at the Beauty Bar. No culture, No scene? Never been downtown aye..

Plus, there's all other sorts of fun to be had for cheap in this town that's really just not for tourists.

Every third sunday at the double down cirque du soleil and blue man group musicians get together to do spacey rock music as Uberschall. Every monday night my good friend Benny boy rex dart spins the best freak shit you'll hear in town. Walking distance from the Hard rock.

If you're into jiggy shake your tittys and let me poor champagne on you type entertainment. There's plenty of that bullshit available.

If you're into staying at home and Netflixing foregin films and going to chinatown to drink tea and be pretentious. There's even that here.

Myself, I scour the streets looking for records, and generally kicking ass. Of course I understand culture is where you bring it. That's why you can find me spinning psychedelic rock and the sweet funk and soul that I like to hear.

But, if you're just a leech, and you need to follow. Go somewherelse.

But ask yourself where else can you get married at a drive in, tour a chocolate factory, visit the pinball hall of fame, lose every dollar you've ever made, and end the night eating thai food with Penn and Teller?

Seattle? oh, nermind.

i've never been to any of the fancy steak places in vegas, but i liked the hanger steak at mon ami gabi (that's the restaurant that faces the sidewalk at the paris casino), mostly because hanger steak is one of my favorite cuts and it's not a common one to find in restaurants. but i ate that like 10 years ago, so i make no guarantees as to whether it's still awesome or not.

The wife and I are thinking about visiting LV late this year or early next. Are these good times to visit? I know it's a desert so the weather doesn't change too dramatically, and there are always gonna be tourists around, but is there a good "season" for LV?

yamchild
07-06-2010, 09:59 AM
people don't go to vegas for any seasonal things, so i'd say just go when it's the least crowded and expensive. the most expensive times to go to vegas are on new year's eve, around chrismas, and summer weekends. just keep in mind that the temperature fluctuates a lot from day to night in a desert and keep an extra jacket handy.

Jook Sing Vegas
07-06-2010, 05:32 PM
I dont think there is a season for Vegas cause the weather is generally good year round. But it follows normal travel ups and downs, when its slow there are always huge conventions that make up some of the slack. But right now rates are really good cause were still in a recession here average occupancy on "the Strip" is below 85% for the first time in 20 years vs 95%+ for weekends and 90% for weekdays. Fall in Vegas is better than Spring cause its always seems to be windy from Feb-Apr. Summer like now its about 105+ in the day and after 10pm it gets below 90 degrees.

wnoodle
07-06-2010, 06:43 PM
Thanks guys. Will talk it over with the wife over the next while and see what time-frame we come up with. Really we just want to avoid those overly crowded tourist season times, y'know?

And hopefully airfare/hotel rates will remain favourable until we book anything :)
