Miss Jing brought this film up here before (but the thread seems to be gone)

Anyway, it's headed for R2 DVD in Feb with English subs.

My copy arrived in the mail today. Cool and cute movie that retains its manga roots.
Lotsa how-they-did-it info on disc 2. English subs read smoothly.
Peko-chan makes a few brief cameos.

Yeay! I  this film! It's just so damn odd and silly.
It's been in the DVD player ever since it came into possession and when i feel kinda sad, I play back certain scenes to cheer me up. "Born!" haha.
The lead, KUBOZUKA-san (Peko) has the weirdest affectation to his japanese. Robocon, did you notice that, too? From what I understand he lived in the States for quite a bit and has the habit of making up engrish words. ;)
Also btw, did you get your promo "butterfly" ping pong ball and sticker with the dvd?
I want one of those snazzy Kaio High School B&W team polos, too.

My Japanese isn't usually good enough to pick up on nuances. I'll give it a harder listen next time :) I liked his character in Laundry (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=ZMBJ-1477) which played the last film fest here.
Man, no promo material this time...maybe I should go back to AMOTokyo to order stuff (though they tend to be a little higher priced)

Robo, if folks forget to give out the promo shit at my bf's store, he usually brings it home. We have like a dozen of those Spirited Away rice ball thingies around here somewhere ;) If any of those ping pong balls and stickers turn up, I'll PM you and send a pair your way ok?
KUBOZUKA is in a recent flick I'm really really wanting to see called "Madness of the Cherry Blossoms", co-starring that Japanese K1 dude with the weird backhanded fighting style. Stylistically, tsugoi ne! Plot wise, it's weird - some hip hop gang stuff thrown in with political underpinings. WTF, I say.

if you guys don't care for the special edition stuff and all there's a cheaper one (with Chinese and English subs) to be found on www.dddhouse.com they're based in HK so the region code is 2 so watch out if your dvd player isn't region free.
this movie rocks! i love the music. whats the song they play during the credits?

Robo, saw "Laundry" with KUBOZUKA-san (peko) after you mentioned it here. Kawaii ne. I am more so in love with that kid now. I liken that role to that of Leo DeCaprio's turn in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" It makes me happy to see that the young charming actors like Yosuke aren't afraid to take on such roles...gonna rent his tv series with the gangstas in Tokyo now.

I liked the film (saw it yesterday) I knew the payoff with Smile and Peko would end up the way it did :)

whar can i get this?

the only one i've found seems to be a bootleg. eng/chinese subtitles, and no special features. weak.

getting stuff from non-reputable dealers and on ebay is getting to be annoying, too many boots, and "custom" dvd's.
go to
http://us.yesasia.com
the region 2 disc for japan is more expensive and has no english subtitles.
the region 3 disc for HK has english subtitles, and is a GOOD transfer, smooth, little pixelization, and has dts audio.
if you can't get a region-hackable dvd player then the vcd is the way to go, under ten bucks.
a friend gave me a burn of the soundtrack-- the theme song is by Supercar. If you don't want to pay 30 dollars for an import soundtrack, the song is on the domestic CD Japan For Sale vol. 2.

yesasia takes forever to ship.
usually when i order from japan (EMS) it arrives FASTER than from domestic usa stores.

If you can't wait for the DVD, you can also get the VCD which has subtitles in English and no region restrictions... That's the one I got for 7 or 8 bucks.

Besides YesAsia, do your research on sites like CD Japan, Amazon.JP and Midnight Eye as well to see what media is available for particular movies before buying anything you're interested in. Hell, if there's a Kinokuniya in your town, look at the dvds in their stock.
jing, you rock. you are a shopper's hero. i would say heroine but juana will think i'm talking about drugs.

You need the appropriate plug-in to view (Windows media player) but I guess this link belongs here:
http://www.ntv.co.jp/channel/kasoh/kin10.html
It's from an annual variety show in Japan where contestants use themselves as props along with simple stage pieces to create onstage spectacles.

What a rad flick! i missed Ping Pong at the SD Asian Film Fest...
...a friend brought back the Japanese copy of the film (Region 2) from Japan, and to my delight, it worked on our PS2 (non-modded).
The film included English subtitles!
I loved it...loved the story, visuals & soundtrack....a real keeper.
I liked how the Japanese DVD included a special menu to listen to all the music tracks in their scenes without dialogue/background noise.
The visuals and colors were so lush, my eyes were twitching after watching it.
Loved the guys who played Peko and Smile.
I'm going to hunt down my own Japanese DVD copy of it (or put it on my X-mas list).

finally got around to renting this. Other than the annoying product placement, it was pretty great. The story is just good, a relationship tale wrapped around the standard sports formula. But the visuals really push it towards greatness.
