house is my favorite. but i don't know about labels cuz i don't DJ or buy vinyl. i like the deep shizat
A good Japanese DJ is Tomiie Satoshi. I think he has at least one domestic US release, maybe others. My wife turned me on to him (she used to work for a house label in Tokyo back in the day).

i like house, but i don't know too much about what's what either. i like the funky, soulful sounding stuff, some disco-y stuff, some french house, stuff that's not too overboard on the wailing vocals...
what's some good labels to check for?

Is that term "Deep House" still being used?
How is it defined?
Do you just know it's "DEEP" as in a spiritual context?
Labels like Spiritual Life, Ibadan, Tribal Wind, Guidance & some stuff on Wave seem to get "DEEP".
But nothing beats a DERRICK CARTER's set when he's on it.

yeah derrick carter's the shiz. my fave's gotta be farina when he's spinning deep house. i think "deep" comes from chicago house, with vocals and roots in disco and all that, but i could be wrong.
I love farina..everytime I hear him it's completely different. Check his dope mixtape ShadesofBlu ...
Anybody know anything about Super Jane (DJ Heather and 3 other women)? Are they out in the Bay area?

Mark Farina...
Oh my god, I remember when Mark Farina, Derrick Carter, and Spencer Kincey tore shit up at 321 and LIFE parties.
Man...That was more than 10 years ago. How time flies...
Peep DJCOLETTE.COM for info on DJ Colette, my favorite SUPERJANE.
I think deep has to do with the basslines and melodies. Bpms around 120-130.
Gemini's the shit. Chicago's the mecca. How come no one mentioned Glenn Underground?
GU
The track "Beyond" is pure genius.
Heather is the shizzy she's fresher then 80's hip hop, always dropping the funk. Her programing, selection, and mixing skills are all tight! Kudos to her. As far as the other Superjane lady's, im not too impressed. I've heard Colette play good mixes, but im not really feeling her live vocals she laces them with.
Farina ALWAYS drops the funk, that's a given. You will NEVER be disappointed w/ his sets. he's dipped into production here and there, but I don't think he's too good at it.
I've been following him for many many years, and collecting his mixes. My favorite mixes are the live ones i have recorded from the mushroom jazz in San Francisco (93), and the ones off BluFunk.
I saw Gemini mix the other night and he sucked. He's a GREAT producer though. Don't know why but I find that in a lot of producers; GREAT producing skills but suck at mixing..
King Britt, the guys from Jazzanova, Nick Holder (one of my FAVORITE producers),and so on.
As far as "deep" house I think it all has to do with tempos, rhythms, and melodies.
i get deep i get deep i get deep i get deeper...

I noticed that too HEADPHONESEX. Sometimes they just don't seem to be able to recreate the same magic in a live setting.
anybody here from the east coast? I'm based in DC and we have a fairly lively deep house scene...
we've got 95 north (amazing producer..responsible for the johnny corporate hit of last summer "sunday shoutin" - and "my life" -- the first track on farina's seasons cd from a few years back -- great mixer and a nice guy to boot)
more than that..we have some great small clubs (red, andalu, sanctuary) that support the scene..no candy kidz, old heads, diverse crowds..
where do the sf heads go? I've tried a few clubs out there and a few boat/pool parties..but I prefer the intimacy of a small club (not the 1015 crap)..any suggestions?
95 North is great. Isn't Deep Dish from DC as well?
Is it safe to assume that most of you are of Asian descent?
I didn't realize so many Asians were into "Deep House". Growing up in Chicago in the 80s, I don't remember seeing hardly any Asians at all at so called "Deep House" parties.
Deep dish are from dc (as is BT...but we don't need to go there) but honestly, I find they're a bit too progressive/dark for my taste..

Has anyone here read "last night the dj saved my life" by bill brewster? (he's an editor for mixmag)...great book--I highly recommend it. It covers the history of the dj (and the varying forms of electronica) from the beginnings of northern soul, to the reggae soundsystems, to nyc underground/chi town early 80s scene to the mid 90s outbreak.

Thanks for the web address to YoshTosh.
"Last Night the DJ..." book is great. I never read the whole thing or even bought a copy. I just copied the playlists in the back of the book at Barnes and Nobles.
"Ocean of Sound" by David Toop is a very informative book as well.
I'm in NYC by the way. If you haven't, check out the Body & Soul sessions at Club Vinyl on Sundays. DJs are Joe Claussel, Francois Kevorkian, and Danny Krivit. Also,on July 14th at free of charge, Basement Jaxx will perform live at Central Park along with a Brazilian dance company and Ron Trent!

how sad is this? I've been to nyc twice in my life and never clubbed there..a good friend was at twilo the night of the fire in april..and now that place is shut for good (did you see they had their phazon system up for bid on ebay? only $75000)

Waddup man? Still lookin for the deep joints? Let me know. I'm from the Chi but I'm now residing in Southern Cali. You can get me via AIM through my nick, "kuwasai74". Is Migs still the Man in SF? His stuff started sounded the same after a while. I still pick up Naked releases but mostly for the art as they haven't done much in the way of evolving their sound. I still like Jay Denes as a producer though. I always enjoyed his releases more than Migs'.
I don't really have any favorite labels cuz there are so many cuts that come out on smaller, lesser known labels, but the following tend to release cuts on the reg:
Large Records
Nitelife Collective
King Street
Wave
Shelter
Ibadan
Spiritual Life
Sfere
MAW
Giant Step
Central Park
Melodius Fonk
Slip n Slide
Flipside
Black Label
Yellow
Peace.
P.S. I agree that Asians are lame when it comes to the deeper side of things. I'm usually the only Asian at deep house parties in Chicago. I wonder if that'll be the case here in LA.

I'm all about Moodymann and Theo Parrish. I feel that they put the soul back into house that was missing for a while.
Unfortunately, Dub Spot in NYC is gone so I have a harder time tracking down the KDJ and Sound Signature 12's. I guess I have to start mail ordering from Record Time in Detroit.
And in case anyone was wondering about my old avatar, it was a pic of Moodymann from his "Silent Introduction" LP.

Theo Parrish

while i like some of those producers/dj's you've listed, CB, I really think the future of house lies partially in live music. Mr. A.L.I. (virtually unknown outside of Chicago) and Peven Everett (virtually unknown outside of the house community) play live "house" on the regular in Chicago and so far, I haven't yet experienced anything that comes close to the energy these guys are able to produce through their music. You'll have to see how the proper crowd responds to the music to be able to understand what I'm talking about.
Let's not forget that this music was made for one reason, and that's for dancing.
so you're saying the future of deep house is at green dolphin street?
lupine
10-30-2002, 04:42 PM
lol...Peven doesn't play there anymore, but yeah, the Dolphin was the shit for a minute.
On the real, though, there hasn't been much innovation in the way of house music in the traditional sense. One of the only things different now is that there's more fusion of classic sensibilities (which is a good thing).
I think that's why Captain Beeheart listed Herbert, KDJ, & Theo as examples of what the future holds for house music--because they're doing some pretty interesting stuff. The problem with some of that material is that it tends to go over peoples' heads on the dancefloor.
I'm interested to see if you have anything to contribute to this subject.

I dont know who he is...sorry. Liquid every friday is good. Its Dubtribe's weekly and its 5 bucks. www.imperialdub.com Most of the spots that play house will always have the word "deep" attached to them. That word, in the aspect of house, has been used loosely for the past 3 years.

i used to go to some dope as fuck deep house parties at silk city in philly like 3 years ago. i never heard house djs like the ones i heard in philly, shit. never knew any of their names tho but it was the first city i was ever in where generally everybody respected house music. i feel like a lot of people on the west coast dis house, especially hip hop hedz.
anyways, i totally dig herbert, its such beautiful beautiful music. never heard it in a club tho, so dont know the effect it has on a crowd. so its something to be said that i would listen to them without being in a club.
The Rurals that I was talking about was 'The Messages' E.P.

5.92, I ended up going to Galaxy on Haight Street last night. I had a really good time there. No attitude, people were actually dancing (not profiling), diverse crowd, and great music provided by Patrick Wilson. Oh yeah, it was only $2. I met some house familia there which just goes to show you how small of a scene this really is. You should check it out. Patrick's boys with Frankie Feliciano and sometimes opens for him at his gigs throughout the country. Trust me, this brotha can beat that shit.

Currently a huge wave in Europe of what is described as 'minimal' ... Richie Hawtin, Ricardo Villalobos are the leaders of the pack, but this covers everythign from the Cosmic style of Lindstrom and the weird organic acid of Isolee through Metro Area style disco and the glitch fuck of Wighnomy Bros etc. It's genuinely populist, like starting to oust trance in certain clubs, and it's deeeeeeeeeeeeep.

nice and deep.. Well, this one's up by Miss Fitz (I think she's out of Germany). I'm not hosting it, just sharing links. You like this? I'm really enjoying this sound.
If you'd like to just email some, you can use yousendit.com.
Richie Hawin apparently composed the 'techno' portion of the opening ceremony in Turin.
Also, nice to see some house and 'downtempo' back at Coachella this year. Adds some good mix to the bunch. Louie Vega, Jazzanova and Tosca are all in the lineup, maybe Mylo too? Cant remember. Looks like just the past few years skipped out on the sort but having a look at the early gigs, there was a lot of DJs, etc. I think its probably better like this year with primarily live acts with a bit of house, nu-jazzy stuff, etc.
Whats funny about house in certain circles of where im from, the peoples that grew up on hip hop/r&b that think they're past it now, think house is such an alternative and hip progression from those days.
I actually like the deep but jazzy/sexy whatever style house of the naked music type, long as its got some bongo breaky beats to it. Deep house on its own, its a bit too monotonous and lethargic in my mind. Its just that much of the naked/miguel migs kinda house has such a lame following....

It's like you know whats up but you dont know whats up.
How is deep house monotonous on its own? Are you thinking of Tech house? Naked and deep house are synonymous with each other. The only thing distinctive about Naked Music are their record covers. What kind of following would you prefer instead of the 'lame' following youre mentioning? I think I know what youre talking about. Describe your scene...

I’m not sure if this is “deep house” but these are the songs I set up as my dance playlist in my TORQ program, some which I refer to as classic house since I remember them from the early 90’s. I love the fact that I don’t have to go hunting for rare tracks on vinyl. Now I have all the house tracks I grew up on and not break the bank in locating the records. These aren’t in the sequential way I spin them cuz I don’t know the BPMs but this I what I play when I do this dance set.
Aly Us – Follow Me
Robin S – Show Me Love
MAW - Climb the Walls
Nightcrawlers – push the feeling on
Bucketheads – the Bomb
MAW feat India – Love & Happiness
Armand Van Helden – Funk Phenomenon
Stardust – Music Sounds Better
Modjo – Lady
Dajae – U get me Up (Cajmere's Underground Goodies Mix)
Lifted – Big Time (Carlito’s Dream)
Bob Sinclair – World Hold On
Miranda – Your love is so Divine
Planet Soul – Set u Free
Pirates of the Caribbean – Rumba
Artie the 1 man party – A Mover la Colita.
Anyone listen to Disco? Not, "I love that shit when I'm wearing my multi-colored fro wig at the 70's party" type of listen. But listen to it frequently and know whats new?

I’m not sure if this is “deep house” but these are the songs I set up as my dance playlist in my TORQ program, some which I refer to as classic house since I remember them from the early 90’s. I love the fact that I don’t have to go hunting for rare tracks on vinyl. Now I have all the house tracks I grew up on and not break the bank in locating the records. These aren’t in the sequential way I spin them cuz I don’t know the BPMs but this I what I play when I do this dance set.
Aly Us – Follow Me
Robin S – Show Me Love
MAW - Climb the Walls
Nightcrawlers – push the feeling on
Bucketheads – the Bomb
MAW feat India – Love & Happiness
Armand Van Helden – Funk Phenomenon
Stardust – Music Sounds Better
Modjo – Lady
Dajae – U get me Up (Cajmere's Underground Goodies Mix)
Lifted – Big Time (Carlito’s Dream)
Bob Sinclair – World Hold On
Miranda – Your love is so Divine
Planet Soul – Set u Free
Pirates of the Caribbean – Rumba
Artie the 1 man party – A Mover la Colita.
this made me heart you even more

Are you still buying wax? I went to the record store maybe less than a handful of times last year. I'd probably do the rounds more often if I still lived in the Bay.
Anyway, you should look into mixes by DJ Rahaan and any DJ from Soul in the Hole (Sadar, Lee Collins, etc). I've found their mixes to be some of the most raw, rare disco sets around. Don't sleep on disco mixes by Jamie 3:26, Glenn Underground and Boo Williams either. Check them out on the DHP. As for non-Chi jocks that play pretty raw, I like Dimitri from Paris and DJ Muro. Lastly, check out Al Kent's Million Dollar Disco. He put out a new record called "Better Days" that's pretty sick.

Youre dealing with a nerd here.
You have great taste in music. My friend grew up with Mystic Bill. Bill's killing it in Dallas now.

Did you check those links?
Add Maurice Fulton to your list as far as old school heads. He plays old records better than anyone I've ever heard.

i dunno what's considered deep house, i was never good at figuring out the massive amounts of genre splits in techno but The Field has been blowing my mind for a while now.

All my Rurals music is on vinyl. Theyve been here a couple of times since I've been in the bay but I manage to miss them......and Yo La Tengo:(
Damn, I'm jealous man. I only have them on CD, although I could never find Sweeter Sounds. I mean... I have mp3s and whatnot, but they kick ass so I support where I can, ya know?
(yeah, i know this is old, but I'm still living in 2006)
I missed Miguel Migs and Lisa Shaw in Seattle... cause my friend who was with me was under 21... that was a real bummer, but then we went and ate sushi and a bartender was cool and didn't care so a great time was had.
