okayplayer tour rocked the house. dead prez stole the show along with a surprise appearance by de la soul. and as usal, the roots were magnificent. caught them in chicago on their third night at the house of blues two weeks ago. it was crazy.
is one of the best live bands I have ever seen. I just saw them at Fais Do Do opening for Pedro the Lion. Of course, DCFC should have obviously headlined the show but rumour has it that Pedro insisted on being last! Also, because Pedro the Lion is a Christian Band, DCFC reports that people kept asking them if they were saved after every show. Regardless, this is a band that rocks hard with high emotional content and does not let indy rockers down. Any one else seen this band? They are from Seattle/Bellingham.
I saw the Deltron 3030 show in New York City at Irving Plaza. It was pleasurable. The oppening act, people under the stairs, had me so hyped that i was almost phreaking the stage-i think they got a kick out of my enthusiasm because they put the mic to my face to scream one of their choruses (this happened at Ozomatli too-but i held the mic for 3 mins and beatboxed and had the cord yanked from me). Ugly Duckling did the same when i was hyped for their set. But most of the crowd was into Ugly Duckling, whereas not too many people were trippin' off people under the stairs like i was. and then ...the movie the warriors was playing on a screen while some hype ass brasil-roots music was playing-we all just stood there for thirty mins or so (like in most concerts). and then we were teased as we saw automator!!!! set up his shit real-serious-like. and it took a good while-but i was okay. and then two live musicians, KID KOALAAAAA!!!!, and AUTOMATORRRRRRRRR started their shit and D-E-L came and proceeded to rip shit drunken style. They did the hype ass songs from the album Deltron 3030, but i wasn't as hyped as before-but that was because I was getting tired. I tried as hard as possible to wave my hands in the air with little care-and i even got a chuckle out of del once for my antics. automator was real cool as a conductor type that kept the unruly band in check while del went off on his Heinekin (sic) induced rampages. and kid koala's solo set was straight up jazzin' (though i did not enjoy the record he played-but he did it real well). then that song (i wish i knew the names) with sean lennon came on and i thought "Who will sing? Automator has a mic..." but they just played a sample. They then left and came back on and did MADNESS ill will style. and then the shit was all over and i went home alone. boo hoo.
moral? AUTOMATOr!!!!
One of the best shows I ever saw was the Red Elvises (www.redelvises.com), a bunch of Russians out of L.A.
They were in the movie "Six-String Samurai". I saw them at
Fitzgerald's in Chicago and they rocked my world!
Yoko Ono at the Park West in '95 was really cool as well
(you can tell I get out a lot). I don't know how she still
does that thing with her voice in her 60's.
I have tickets to see the Smashing Pumpkins' second to last
show, at the United Center Nov. 29th. Their last ever will be at the Metro Dec 3rd.

i am definitely super weak for missing
the death cab for cutie/pedro show...
they played back to back days too.
both bands got to headline.
i am weak.
Yeah yah-
I caught the DELTRON 3030 last night here in chicago. People under the stairs were really good. I didn't really like Ugly Duckling- they were trying to keep it real and all, but I wasn't into it... but then the Deltron came on. Holy Crapola; the Automator is sooo bad ass. and kid koala's solo set was amazing. he was mixing a jessica rabbit song... super cool. and del was pretty cool. he even did "catch a bad one". awww. it was really really good.
then BAdly Drawn Boy. he puts on a great show. a long show, but very entertaining.
smith at the wiltern tonight! i love him forever!

have to admit i wasnt that impressed.
the visuals were amazing just for pure aesthetic reasons as well as for intellectual and political reasons (there were some clips from the presidential campaign that were dead on funny) but the music didnt get me jumping.
i think that coldcut really doesnt emphasize getting ppl jumping however.
sides it could just be that jungle has ruined me forever. nothing will ever be hard enough or fast enough (get your minds out of the gutter ppl! *wink*)
however the 10th anniversary release by ninjatune "xen cuts" is simply amazing. its a 3 cd set that you can get for under 20 bucks, at least you should be able to. and its great. i think its also going to be reviewed in the new issue right eric?

I am also weak. They played in a club one block from my house but I still didn't go. Well I DID go .. but the fucking line was all the way around the block .. and there was already like 200 people in the club smoking cigs. (I am very ashmatic .. hehe get it) And there were all these crazy christians around to see Pedro the Lion .. and then I got pissed because I wanted to see them as well. Bah. SO I left and rented SixStringSamurai .. see how this whole thread revolves around my life? I just bought the new Dan the Automater CD last night as well.
I bought that CD because the show I was GOING to see .. was cancelled. The Murder City Devils decided to play a show in Vancouver with Japanese emorockband Eastern Youth .. granted I would have enjoyed that show as well .. but they fucking cancelled mine!! Gah!
Oh well .. I stayed home and watched the Japanese fil "Adrenaline Drive" ... very cute.

Yes Tiffany "I think we're alone now" (remember her?) played a free show at UCLA. She didn't look the same, had like purple hair, and had a cheesy studio band backing her. She has a new album out that's gotta suck, but her hit song was still good. That girl has milage on her for sure. She looked pasty, but knew what she was doing on stage. Must be those shopping mall shows. I just can't believe the few folks there who could lip sync to her new stuff.
She has that Sheryl Crow thing going sort of...
Eastern Youth should be hot.

They are pretty cool. I've got their new release "May my scream reach the clouds" .. or Kumo Inuke Koe.
It's odd to hear Japanese lyrics sung to typical emorock.
I like it. Singer is a good screamer.
Melt Banana cancelled their salt lake show last night. The one show in the last coupla months I REALLY want to see, and it falls through. *sigh*
Oh well, maybe enemymine won't cancel.

weezer @ irving plaza in august. one of my friends sat in the rain for 6 hours to get inflated scalped tickets. i just gave up hope, but at the last minute, my friend came up with an extra ticket!! the show was packed and so rad. everyone was sweaty and having fun and singing along. the new bassist mikey...well...i can't tell if he's as good as matt, but he does the trick. best show ever even though the opening band sucked and some fat guy elbowed me in the face thus causing me to lose my glasses under hundreds of pouncing feet. but it was worth it!
sonic youth and sleater-kinney in paris: such a good show. sonic youth stayed in my hotel for two days this summer in paris. jim o'rourke was there and he is so funny. coco is cute too. but what was the best was when thurston punched jim in the face on stage. why? i don't know! but i have a picture!
the fucking champs w/ the last of the juanitas @ middle east. if you didn't really follow metal in the 80s but are starting to get into it or even if you did like metal...the fucking champs are it. hot licks and they're tight. the last of the juanitas are really cool too. they've got a cute girl on bass who gave me a free lighter.

They blew the doors off of The Smell in Downtown L.A. last night. My ears are still ringing and I can hear Eric, Mike, Angelyn, and Pete's ears ringing, too. I think they play Frisco tonight, so check them out of.

If anyone has ever seen NO JUSTICE then you know that seeing a band live should always involve danger. Timmy dives and goes all out every show.
What Happens Next? are always amazing live. devon is old and can still do great jumps and flips and the kids go nuts to them.
Dillinger Four if you ever get to see them in a basement then you know how punkrock was meant to be seen.
on a not hardcore/punk note- i saw SHELLAC on a riverboat. it was great. they always blow me away. plus they also do breakfast shows. nothing like seeing people at a show at 8am.

Mooney Suzuki!!! saw them a couple of months ago with man vs. astro-man...honestly one of the best shows i've ever seen......the best description of their music appears to be "gospel rock"....,,a much better live show than their cd....all the girls sighing after the lead singer..the bass player playing the sullen rock star.....the hipsters in the corner lounging......everyone's just rocking out....
catch them if you can...................

Message:
I want to spread the word about El Vez ( the Mexican Elvis ) who I saw perform at the Howlin' Wolf here in N'Awlins last October.
This tour was also El Vez' presidential campaign, under the motto " El Vez for Prez!" Decked out in Uncle Sam-attire, El Vez took the stage ,and throwing his legs up in the air, belted out" Electeeed!! I want to be electeeeed!!" to the tune of " Electric" played note-perfect by his super tight, rocking band. Then the Mexican Elvis , backed by the Memphis Mariachis and flanked by the lovely Elvettes, stormed through an energetic set of songs you..thought you knew? " Suspicious Minds" became "
Immigration Time", about the plight of latino immigrants,
" Hound Dog" became " You ain't nuttin' but a Chihuahua "
( aptly dedicated to George Bush! ).In a very tightly orchestrated show, El Vez danced, sang, joked, took questions from the audience ( which prompted him into yet another song ) . Highlighting the latino experience in the States, mixing pop, kitsch and politics,or as he put it " We're putting the 'camp' back in ' campaign'."
He's got my vote! El Vez for Prez!

EASTERN YOUTH!!!their cd i got at the atd-i show is frikken epic!they even came with a video of one of their songs and live footage of another. they were mindblowing.am i exagerrating?but anyways besides that the only other good show i saw was the Blue Meanies in SJ and it was one the their best sets i have ever seen( next to the time they played musical chairs with the audience in FL) even though hardly anyone was there.

El Vez's Merry Mex-mas show is something you don't want to miss, either... If you don't get to see that, there's a CD that's pretty hot, too.
Also in the holiday spirit, I'm going to see The Vandals Christmas show in Anaheim tomorrow. It will be good to see them to old hits (Anarchy Burger, Urban Struggle), new hits (Jackass), and their Christmas songs (My First Christmas as a Woman, Christmas for Penis...) live with teenage slam pits, butt bongos, and more.

saw this at the pnc bank arts center yesterday. it was a whole day affair. incubus and moby rocked the main stage. and carl cox, the orb and oakenfold blew the tent apart. i missed: liquid todd, outkast and the roots. damn. i also missed derrick may but i've seen him already. good show and good pics. i'll try to post them in a bit.

So, it was good? I'm thinking of going when it gets here in August. Do you think it's worth the money?
Favourite concerts:
1)Fishbone '92-crowd was surfing and diving BEFORE they hit the stage. Did some 10-15 minute version of "Party...".
2)PE '93-just 'cause.
3)New Pornographers '01-a great band currently at the heigtht of their powers. And funny as hell, too.
4)BDP '89-my first, my only. Special.
5)cub, BUM, the Smugglers and Pluto '94-all vancouver lineup. cub was very, very good. And BUM is my all-time fave.

Saw Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her last night, and they were pretty good. The album I bought is a little poppier than the live show.
Fugazi/Shellac/the Ex a couple weeks ago in Chicago. The Ex fucking blew Shellac off the stage. It was embarassing. Fugazi had a great show-played a handful of new songs. I sometimes wish they would forego the "hits" and play only newer stuff.
Shellac on a boat last fall in Minneapolis was amazing. I don't know what was up with them in Chicago.
Superchunk here in MN a couple years ago was another fav. I think their last album is one of their best, and those songs really blew me away live. Mac is a guitar hero.
Looking forward to Unwound next month...

Saw the White Stripes last thursday. They were alright, not as good as their last show. But the second band, Von Blondies kicked ass. Their out of Detroit as well, play blues/punk. Plus, I think the drummer is Korean. an added bonus. Go see them if you get a chance.

I saw Death Cab for Cutie with Pedro the Lion and Velour 1000 (? Maybe? can't remember the name) way back in January or something like that. Depending on which flyer you saw, they were all billed as the headlining band. They were all good. I think one of the kids in Death Cab for Cutie played as backup for Pedro the Lion? Or they are cousins or something? Weird. Anyhow. DCFC, I agree, very energetic and crazy and fun! A good show.
Another good show I went to was Modest Mouse last summer. I've never seen the club so packed. And the crowd so into everything.
Sloan, 2 Halloweens ago, rocked Detroit...sooooo good...
Recently I saw Cibo Matto, that was cool too but I missed half the set (it *was* free so I guess...whatever...) so I don't feel right saying how cool it really was. Seeing as how I wasn't there for a good portion of it.
DEMF back in May was fun too.

Shit, don't even talk to me about that Unwound show. I'm going on vacation for a week and that's when they are playing. I've seen them play 5 or 6 times before, but I really wanted to see them on this tour after "Leaves Turn Inside You" came out. Plus I haven't seen them for probably 3 years. They haven't played here since I booked them at The Whole, whenever that was, a long fucking time ago...

cibo matto last sunday! like jardine said, it was free, which makes it even sweeter. they were so damn good, it was probably the best show i've been to in a very, very long time.
DEMF last year was super dope. i didn't go this year, but am not so sad about it anymore since it rained and hailed and there really wasn't anything i wanted to see, cept for kid koala, but hey. oh well.
Saw j5 and beat junkies earlier this year and i guess that has to top cibo matto. my jaw was on the floor pretty much the whole time beat junkies were on stage.
too bad i'm so poor. maybe i would go see cool shows more often. slayer were in town not too long ago. too bad i missed that one.

Shellac on a boat last fall in Minneapolis was amazing. I don't know what was up with them in Chicago.

The best boat show I've ever been to (only two) was Dillinger Four and Lifter Puller. It was fun cause it was before people that listened to D4 thought Lifter Puller was cool and vice versa. When Lifter Puller played all the punks fled for the deck, and when D4 played all the middle-ged people and art school dropouts did the same.
That was probably one of my more memorable live shows, but probably just cause it was on a boat.
I think the best live shows I've ever seen have been Antioch Arrow sometime in '94 (maybe 95, can't remember), Pizzacato Five a couple of years ago at First Ave., and Blonde Redhead, the sexiest band in showbiz.

Peaches-she is ugleee with a mullet

I've seen a few shows at Magic Mountain out toward Los Angeles. (Not counting KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park on TV, of course...) There was X on their More Fun in the New World tour. Lots of tourists taking pictures of mohawks. Then there was The Three O'Clock for Sixteen Tambourines. Vepas and Lambrettas all over the parking lot.

Wow X is one of my all time faves. I got to play Ms. Pac Man with Exene once...I think I already posted that but hey it's a good story. Sometimes I don't know whether to laugh or cry when I see a Mohawk doo. I see some punks on St. Mark's with Old Navy bookbags. That's heelarryus.

Wow, playing Ms. Pac Man with Exene is pretty cool. I've played dominoes with Chuck from Concrete (the old Faith No More Singer) and also with Lync! I guess I've also slapped bones with Sooyoung from Seam. But on the video game end, it's got to be Super Bomber Man and Bust a Move. I've totally gotten J Church and some other bands addicted to that when they've crashed at my house.
Back to cool shows, IQU are still pretty hot. I saw them in SD last week. Calvin Johnson is supposed to be cruising through town sometime soon, too.

Recently: Mouse on Mars puts on a good show. I witnessed them play recently with a full band of traditional rock instruments ( guitars and drums mixed with sequencers, keyboards and laptops). Two years ago, they opened for Stereolab in SF where they were strictly button pushers, but they still rocked the audience.
DJ Craze, DJ Shadow, Z-Trip, and Q-Bert put on good performances as well. (Though they were not all playing the same bill.)
Michael Rose, Sly and Robbie are also worth checking out.
Past: ...but I am prone to say that the Violator tour is memorable to this day. I suppose that the first stadium concert is always memorable.

...and you will know us by the trail of dead!!! i just saw them for the first time last week even though they're from austin. if you have not seen them, do so now. these boys rock out as hard as they can and usually smash a few guitars and drum sets by the end of the set. their songs aren't too bad either. i think they're touring through japan right now.

-Oingo Boingo had those halloween shows they used to do which were cool...I think they had X play there at a couple shows too
-Saw the Chili Peppers at Vision skate escape back in the mid 80's before Mother's Milk came out...
Haven't been to any real shows since coming to Korea in 96 as there aren't any really cool bands that come over here to perform and I don't really dig much of the Korean cookie cutter shit though I have found a few bands I like.

their manic energy. From what I understand, they've been around since the late 70's. They play 60's-ish garage.
Saw the Strokes last week @ the Metro in Chicago. Really good show. tons of fun and the crowd was going

Everything I post makes me seem really, really old.
I saw the Fleshtones play in the mid-80s opening for Echo & the Bunnymen on their Ocean Rain tour. The other openers were Billy Bragg and The Three O'Clock. So cool.
More recently, I caught this British band KaitO. They're pretty amazing. Like Lush vocals with Goo-era Sonic Youth raziness, and Bis power. Really, really amazing live.
I've also been diggig this local band called Dengue Fever who are playing the KXLU benefit at Spaceland in a few weeks...

Where did you see them? They played the Shakedown and their set was brillant.

I saw Kool Herc play the opening night of a local hip hop club my mates promote. It was kinda weird because he kept shouting 'who remembers this shit?' over all his breaks. The crowd was like 'yay!!' even though it was 90% college students who probably didn't even like hip hop a year previously. Made me feel old, and I'm not even that ancient.
Best show I ever saw: Public Enemy 10 years ago at Reading.

well i got to see Jay-Z for free last night. It was my first big hip-hop show. and i have to give props to Jay-Z, the show was nice. He didn't make the crowd wait that long, which was refreshing. (the last time i saw Mos Def the bastasd came on at 12:30am, doors opened at 8) the sound was great but that had more to do with the Warfield. His set was a good mix of old shit and new shit.

tonight we had a local punk vs. hardcore cage match. it was great.
I dont know if anybody has seen them, but they rock. i really mean rock...just saw them last week...going to see death cab for cutie and shiner tomorrow night. Travis tonight.
The Negro problem is one of the best live band I've seen in the past few months. They kinda sound like dave matthews band, folky...They have this one song called Ken that mocks barbie...funny as hell

Yea.. tiffany was up here too.. free concert also.
i felt sorry for her.. if she came up here 15 years ago, she would've totally rocked the place..
she kind of reminds me of the old movie "What ever happened to Baby Jane" where a child star grows up but isn't able to accept taht she's like 70 years old,REALLy ugly, and disliked so she goes on wearing her pink lipstick and shirley temple curls. it's really creepy actually.
but im not saying tiffany's THAT bad.. just a tad worn out...

I think I'm gonna go to that show. I just remember seeing the Doughnuts and thinking they were bad. INC opened a show for Rocket From The Crypt in Minneapolis when I lived there, but the venue they were playing at sucked, so I didn't go. I'm looking forward to this show tho...

plaid was pretty dope. they just played here in sf on wed night at the great american (dope dope venue). they did some really cool trippy breakbeat shit with heavy synths and subs (ala boards of canada). sometimes a lil too many bleepy bleeps but all in all it sounded good. they rocked out on latptops which was way better than if they had just spun records (what aphex twin did in LA a month ago ----> weak)
they had rad movies and footage of randomness in the background screen. then they had these lil video cameras hooked up to this gyro bot thing that spun around at all diff angles and video taped the 2 guys rockin out.
only thing that sucked about that night was the opener ciba something. she sucked ass.
fugazi at some hockey arena in burnaby bc last year... f'n awesome...it was like $10 CAD which is like $2USD, when I bought them the girl was 'how many...' and without even thinking I said "i'll take five.." just cause they were so cheap...and it was over by 10PM so I could get to bed on time...

i went to see curl up and die with the darkest hour and the crown.
good show. cuad's currently one of my favorite bands. darkest hour played an awesome set. the crown was a bit too satanic. that really got on my nerves. musically they are very very good though.

i usually like very small venue shows but these two behemoths took the cake these past 12 months:
1. all tomorrow's parties - LA
25+ hours of excruciating--bc i had to pee and sometimes the ushers threatened to give your seat away if you went to the bathroom + sheer hunger--amazing ear bleeding happiness. got to see quix*o*tic; christina rosenvinge; kim gordon, ikue mori, jim o'rourke & dj olive; eddie vedder; cat power; television; the jicks; the stooges tribute band; chris lee; deerhoof; destroy all monsters; califone; kevin drumm, lee ranaldo & leah singer; jackie o'motherfucker; papa m; big star; wilco; saccharine trust; dead c; peaches; mike watt; stereolab; sonic youth.
it was really tough making choices but w/ eddie vedder freaking pinning us down on friday (his fans are nuts) and front row seats on saturday, well.... my only regret is unwound ended early so i missed seeing part of their set (and now they're gone). that and i missed the boredoms. regardless it was fantastic--sonic youth did an excellent job curating this event.
2. harry smith project - LA (another marathon event @ ucla)
for a review scroll halfway down: http://www.laweekly.com/ink/01/24/music-bruno.shtml
fuzzy random warm thoughts for: elliott smith & pete krebs @ aquarius records; tindersticks @ bimbo's; chavez @ bottom of the hill; goat punishment @ the viper room; godheadsilo @ the kilowatt; apples in stereo @ the kilowatt; kronos quartet @ dinkelspiel; folk implosion @ bottom of the hill; red hot chili peppers @ random dives in honolulu (pre & mother's milk era); 1/2 of daft punk @ v/sf; elvis costello @ the greek theater; jsbx @ the fillmore; paul westerberg @ the fillmore; archers of loaf @ cubberley ....

just saw the shins last saturday. guided by voices about a month ago. it's really hard to enjoy a show after gbv cause they were so fuckin good. my favorite part was when rob pollard called frank black a fat asshole, and said led zepplin sucked. my only disagreement was when he said bob mould never wrote a good song. that's obviously not true.

I saw Fugazi and Poster Children at MAssArts in Boston this weekend. Excellent show as usual. Fugazi hasn't played in Boston in 11 years due to greedy promoters and a ban on all-ages shows (recently lifted). They were happy to be back and I was grateful to be on the guest list of this sold out show. Dischord REcords had a table set up to sell all of their catalog of records. Very cool and the perfect opportunity for the young crowd to pick up some vinyl.

Poster Children are great. I have been following them for years. My band got to open for them a couple of times and it was Rose, the bass player, who put me on the guest list for the Fugazi show. Excellent. I have a great pics to post of Rose with her big rock move.

that's pretty nifty. i'm very much into down-to-earth musicians these days, and i think one of the reasons i like seeing the Poster Children, and do go see them just about every time they come to town, is because they just seem like nice folks.
the Fugazi show sounded pretty killer.

You'd better believe it! Man, I just got back from a Guided By Voices gig tonight. It was so fucking awesome--and long! Christ, they played for almost 2 1/2 hours! Just going at it full bore the whole time. Shit, the bassist was drinking JD straight from the bottle and yet they were super tight. Easily the best $12 I've spent in months, bar none.

i just saw The Roots on Saturday and it was great. and it was a free show on top of that. Kool Mixx had a dj comp before the actual show which was nice... Fly-DFX, K-9, and Crucial.
we left early [but not before hearing 'Elephant Dynamite'] to drive 1/4 mile to the Dieselboy show. That was good, not as good as The Roots. His MC is wicked, J Messinian. The venue was too hot.
It was free and fun. Good Saturday.

Shout Out Louds lastnight was good stuff, until that cracked out chick singer sang. It all went downhill from there. Two dudes from the Pogues went up and played a lame song, and the whole band stayed sloppy after that.
I like them though. I'll go find some of their albums now.
Saw The New Pornographers the other night. One of the better shows I've seen in the past few years. They closed the first set with "The Bleeding Heart Show" which means I can die now.

I saw M.I.A. a few weeks ago at Cane's in San Diego. That bitch is wild!
Crowd surfing from the stage over to the bar. Jumping on the bar and rapping on it. Crowd surfing back to the stage.
I went to only two shows. Neko Case and the New Pornographers. Both at the same place. So I basically saw Neko Case twice. Damn. Seems like there's somebody else I'm overlooking. I was going to that Rakim and Ghostface show and decided not to. I was going to go see Atmosphere too, and decided I really shouldnt' be taking the next day off from work.
This is a big change from 2006, in which I saw zero shows. My first year since 1990 that I haven't been to any shows. I blame the kid for this.
