View Full Version : Charlotte Sometimes Release Dates

04-16-2003, 09:20 PM
Hello. Now that I am an official member of this forum, I just wanted to take the time to announce the dates and locations of CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES as the release is only weeks away.

Here they are:

CHICAGO - MAY 2nd - WATER TOWERS

SAN JOSE - MAY 9th - CAMERA CINEMAS

SAN FRANCISCO - MAY 9th - GALAXY THEATER

BERKELEY - MAY 16th - THE OAKS

If the screenings are successful, other planned cities are: MIAMI, SEATTLE, WASHINGTON DC, LOS ANGELES (JUNE), NEW YORK (JULY), HONOLULU (JULY)

At the moment, the San Francisco Premeire might be some kind of grand affair, and some of us might be there, or some of us might be at the San Jose Premiere on the same night, if that gives you extra incentive.

This year has become an important year for Asian American film and Asian Americans in film. I still think it sucks that Asian American film is considered a separate entity, because to me film is film, movies are movies blah blah blah, but I won't get into that.

CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES has had success speaking only for itself, and by offering only what it offers: cinema. It's the little film that could. If you've seen my homie Justin Lin's Better Luck Tomorrow, its interesting how these two films differ in approach and attitude, you really can't compare them, but the success in the market place is as equally important in terms of the bigger picture: the future.

Please come out and support it if you have the time. I'll be checking the post if you have inquiries............

thank you,
michael idemoto

sweeeet i'm talking to eric byler tomorrow for an interview. michael, is it alright if i email you?

michael idemoto
04-17-2003, 12:40 PM
lynrei - Yeah, I can see how the trailor might confuse people about the character relationships. Eric Byler, the director, chose not to define the charaters with titles like Better Luck. haha....

Ryan - Good point, the cities that are currently planned for release are not definite. Unfortunately money talks and bullshit walks.

Miss YelloKitty - I am waiting for your email. Anytime.

hi. i was encouraged to join this forum by michael to chat more with people who are interested in watching charlotte. thanks for your interest, and i hope that when and if you do get to see the movie, you enjoy it for it's...subtleties, realism, lack of absolutes, and well, the funny parts too. take care!

jskang - good question. right now, Mpls isn't on the agenda, but if the screenings are successful, you never know where it might turn up. I know the DVD will be available sometime this year, but if you really really want to see it - email Eric Byler, the director, and see if he can hook you up.

Ryan - Sorry, there is no trailer available on the website at this time. It used to be up at the Bravo site but I checked and now that one is gone too, but I guess that wasn't really a trailer as it was a clip. I have heard reports of people seeing a trailer but, sorry to say, I don't know where that happened. I haven't even seen the trailer myself. Hope that doesn't mean you won't check out the movie.

Ah, thanks for the help, Michael. If the DVD will go into general release later this year I may just buy it.

But, hopefully, it will do well enough to see theatrical release in Mpls.

Otherwise, I'll think about it some more, and if I cannot bear waiting, I will e-mail eric! :)

The trailer looks great, but I don't want to wait that long to see it in LA! Normally all the films get here so fast, it is strange that it is taking so long to have a run here. Oh well. I am working so hard, it is not like that will seem like 2 months so...

i've never even heard of The Oaks in Berkeley .. probly means it's not walkable distance
movie looks really good and it opens conveniently right in the middle of finals .. that'll be my study break!

are you guys planning on doing a screening/Q&A at berkeley?
i hope so .. those are fun and the turnout is always great

Michael, it's funny that you referred to it as "the little film that could" because that's what I've been calling it too! I just want to applaud you all on the sophisticated, intelligent, fascinating film that it is. The cast is so strikingly goodlooking and have such great on-screen chemistry, that I'd have to agree with Mauigirl's confession. I've seen the film a number of times, and I'm doing everything in my power to promote Charlotte in its initial release cities to ensure that it comes to mine!

michael idemoto
04-23-2003, 10:53 PM
jonahlee - Yeah, its taking a bit of time, approx., two months to play in LA. Maybe Eric Byler was saving the best for last. Hope you find time off your busy schedule to see it. Don't work so hard.

nancyk - I hope you find the theatre. I've never heard of it myself, but then again I only been to Berkeley twice. I'm pretty sure that Eric Byler will be there and possibly some of us.

mulan - Thanks for the nice comments. And thanks for the promotion. We really appreciate all the support.

stryfe - It doesn't usually work that way. Sundance channel was putting on a program that kind of highlighted upcoming talent. I think there were four or five other movies that belonged to this "special" one month package. Then after Charlotte got nominated for Two Spirit Awards, Sundance aired it two more times to give the Award voters a chance to view it and to hype it up. They basically, hooked the film up. Question: Did you come up with your name from the X-Men character? I'm in an Xmen 2 type of mood so I was just wondering.

Ryan - Its an anti-love story involving four people. Well, thats what I'm told to say.

mangamonster - Glad you liked it. It was shot in SILVERLAKE. Hope you got a lot of money, those houses are priced high.

kyoppolife - I just heard news that the DVD is being launched in July/August sometime. I think. Either way it should be available before the end of the year. Well, thats what a hear....

alarm - Thanks for the support. Tell Dad I said hello.

Yellokitty - Still waiting for your questions.

alarm - I had no idea of such screening, sorry.

can't wait to see the film again, i was hoping that it'd be released on dvd, but pretty much gave up hope figuring that there might not have been a distributor/budget to get it released. great to see that it'll be in the theaters, and hopefully i'll be able to catch it again. if not, there are chances that sundance will put it in to rotation at sometime in the future, right?

naw...i needed a name for a bbs that i joined back in high school, and used a pocket dictionary/thesaurus i used to carry around with me for suggestions. :-/

oh, one more question for you...is sunsets available? i saw it about four years ago when there was a screening at uci, and wouldn't mind seeing it again.

Liver_on_a_Stick - Don't know that info about Toronto. I thought it had played at some festival there a month or two ago. I'll ask Eric Byler to see what the scoop is on that area.

Kenishiro - I hope you do.

stryfe - I think the Sundance screenings are over for now. As for Sunsets, well, right now there is no chance to view it. Sorry about that. But keep your eyes and ears open for WATSONVILLE, which will someday be the re-edited version.

Brodie Baby - Hope you enjoy what Eric has to say. If not throw some rottentomatoes.com at him

hannabarbarella - Well, any kind of enthusiasm is welcome.

I loved CS at the SFIAAFF, and spoke and corresponded with Eric afterwards. It kept me thinking for days. I'm getting a big group of friends to come see the movie next week.

I know Jacqueline Kim (Jackie?) is going to be in SF for an event next Tuesday, but who all is going to be up here for the actual opening night?

Thanks!

Eric
04-28-2003, 08:42 AM
It looks like all four leads will be there for the premiere in SF May 9th.

In Chicago, I'll be on my own opening night May 2nd, (though Jacqueline is here with me now for some events and parties: Chicago check out AsianSocialNetwork.com).

DVD is not until October at the soonest, as our theatrical might actually succeed - fingers crossed. But we did sign a really good deal that will make the DVD widely available (in not in October, by Christmas for sure). DVD/video will have my college film "Kenji's Faith" as well q/a with Roger Ebert, Michael, Jacqueline and me, and some behind the scenes and interviews and stuff.

Foreign distribtion wheeling and dealing will begin in a few weeks at Cannes. We just signed with our foreign distributor this month. I was indeed at a WONDERFUL festival in Toronto called Reel World a few weeks back. I can't wait to bring the film back to Canada.

Michael's understanding of how we got theatrical distribution is pretty much right. We started out with some set backs, rejections from even the Asian American festivals, and got slammed with some kind of IMDB hate thing, so it seemed like the film would not be a success. We starting winning awards at some pretty big festivals, but theatrical distributors didn't show interest in the film until we were reviewed by Roger Ebert in November and then got the Spirit Award nominations in December. These were the lucky breaks that saved us.

Yes, it's weird to start in Chicago and the Bay Area before going to New York and L.A. This is because the distributors are not very confident and not very rich. All the things you hear about BLT not having money for ads and needing the community to prove our strength... well it's even more the case for "charlotte sometimes" because Visionbox and Small Planet Pictures are small distribution companies taking a big risk. Not only is it an Asian American film, but it’s also an “art house” film. So they’re starting in towns they feel better about. Chicago comes first because it's Roger Ebert's hometown, and film-goers here often seek out artistic films. I’m in Chicago right now a day after Ebert's film festival. Michael and Jacqueline flew in from L.A. It was a blast. We sold out a 15,000 seat theater and had a really cool q/a with Ebert afterwards. From this we're launching Chicago's theatrical release Friday May 2nd. I’ve found a really wonderful Asian American community in Chicago, many of whom are coming to our aid – starting with the festival they had right before Ebert’s.

The Bay Area is also a place that makes and likes indie films, and with the support of NAATA and its festival in March, the distrib's knew we could reach out to Asian American community. I'm sorry it will take time to get to many of you. But the good news is that the distributors are gaining confidence in the film, in part due to BLT's success, in part due to our own critical success in advance of the release. I still can't believe some of these reviews. Anyway, New York, L.A., Seattle, Honolulu, and D.C. are coming up, and new cities are being added if these go well.

New Orleans could well pop up on the theatrical schedule, we're trying!

Never read the book by Penelope Farmer, the book however did inspire the song by The Cure, which inspired the film. Sort of.

I agree, it's better not to see the trailer for "charlotte" or for any film - but "charlotte" is not an event movie. in other words, knowing a little bit of WHAT is going to happen doesn't ruin it entirely because the whole point is HOW things happen. And this is very hard to discern from the trailer.

Haku - Thank for the shout. I think we are all going to be there for the SF premiere on the 9th. And we will be there for the San Jose screening on the 10th.

I think Eric Byler meant that we sold out a 1,500 seat theater, not a 15,000...

Kenishiro - Just don't make the same mistake that some dude made at the Ebert fest and mention that Jacqueline was Sulu's daughter in Star Trek: Generations. You might get a Sulu chop.

"greg" as in THE Greg Pak?! Everyone should go out and see his film Robot Stories if you get the chance. You should also check out his website www.asianamericanfilm.com and stay on top of the latest Asian American film news.

Michael & Eugenia, stop with all the boobie talk! You're getting me all worked up...Kinda like how Charlotte Sometimes does. :p

Will the LA premiere be a star-studded red-carpeted event?

How can I get a copy of Sunsets or Breezes to screen at our film festival?

Eric
05-01-2003, 01:01 AM
ChinaSpice, that's a great idea to do a Micahel Idemoto retrospective. I'm pretty sure Michael could get you "Sunsets" as he's one of the directors. NAATA should have a copy of "O.B.I.T.S." an anthology feature which includes shorts like "Breezes" directed by Justin Lin (starring Michael Idemoto), as well as shorts directed by Idemoto, Chris Chan Lee (director of Yellow), Rea Tajiri (director of Strawberry Fields), Quentin Lee (director of Drift), and one directed by GR's very own Eric Nakamura. FYI, "Breezes" was the biggest reason I cast Idemoto in "charlotte sometimes," at least prior to meeting with him and seeing him square off with Jacqueline Kim at final callbacks.

Other recent Asian American films I recommend:

"Flavors"
"Where's the Party, Yar?"
"Face" (if you haven't shown it)
"Robot Stories" (if you haven't shown it)

Shorts I've seen and liked:
"Tomato and Eggs"
"The Pick Up"
"Gourmet Baby"
"Educated"
"Barrier Device" (if you haven't shown it)

michael idemoto
05-01-2003, 01:02 AM
China Spice - Sorry for all the dirty talk. I don't really know bout the LA premiere but it there should be some kind of happenings there, I mean, we're all local, so why not?

Uh, as for Sunsets, well, that might be possible I guess. But which festival are you? If you want Breezes you gotta go straight to the source: JUSTIN LIN.

Thanks for the support

What I want to know is the story behind Cody ChesnuTT's songs being in the film? Does he appear in it too? I'm really feeling his album.

I might have to head up to NoCal to see Charlotte Sometimes if I can't wait until June 20. It's got to be better than BLT.

Thanks for replying Eugenia. I guess I have to go up north now. Are you saying you don't have Cody's album yet? If you're in LA, I saw it at Amoeba Music for like $15 the other day. But you can probably get it for free.

And I read you've worked with Christopher Doyle and Peter Chan. I liked Comrades, and I love Doyle's work - just bought his Buenos Aires book off eBay. When can we see "Three?"

Hi all,
I've been talking up this incredible film in SF - so far, about 40 friends have committed to seeing it on opening night, lots more interested...it's a huge draw that ALL FOUR LEADS!!! will be in SF next Friday - thanks a lot!

Sometimes the conversation will go:
me: It's an Asian American relationship film...
them: (shocked expression) oh, is it a documentary?
or: I need to learn about that!

So I'm looking forward to it - lots of luck to you, and see you at the afterparty!

http://www.suntimes.com/output/ebert1/wkp-news-charlotte02f.html

that was a fucking awesome review.

some production questions, for my own personal info as a film student. i'm sure i'll have a lot more after i get to hopefully see this film.

- what did you edit the film on?
- what kind of mics did you use to record the sound?
- how different would this film have been if it would have been shot on 35mm instead of dv?

i'm saving some dough to buy a decent dv cam. how did the pd-150 perform compared to the dsr500? i'm deciding between the sony pd150, vx2000, canon gl2, and pana agdvx100. i'm leaning towards the panasonic. has anyone worked with these cams?

Eric
05-02-2003, 08:08 AM
thought the DSR 500 was fab but then again there are new cameras now. recorded sound on DAT most of the time, but the scene with Mike and Eug in the junk yard was recorded straight into the camera. this movie sounds good because we spent time and money in the mix studio. Edited on Final Cut Pro. Most people don't realize it was originally DV when they watch it. If it were shot on 35, it would have been hard to get the same performances, simply because of shooting ratio. Not that I did a thousand takes, but that I often let the actors live and breathe while in character with cameras rolling - so they were very accustomed to it and never thought "Oh God the camera's on, I'd better act as much as possible." Better go now.

Hi Eric, thanks for the advice! I'm going to pass the info on to our programming committee. I've heard of all the others except for "Flavors" and "Face." Were they shown at any other film festivals? Do you know the print sources?

Best of luck with your Chicago release today! I'm going to buy a ticket to each of the screenings, even if I'm not in Chicago. Except it's not listed on the Internet as showing at Village Theaters WaterTower...

hi sam. yes, i was very very fortunate to get to work with peter chan as well as chris doyle. i absolutely LOVED comrades when i first saw it. that gave me hope in hk films. so when i got to work with peter, it was like a dream come true. THREE is i think available on dvd at like chinese video stores and on line somewhere. don't know if it'll be released here though. but, thank you for the support. very nice of you. take care!

Yea, you can get three at any number of places. http://www.fivestarlaser.com has it, and so does http://www.pokerindustries.com and I have ordered DVD's from both, though Five Star is as easy as a quick drive to San Gabriel.

In my opinion Christopher Doyle is the king. He is hands down my favorite cinematographer in the world. And besides I agree with him that Cheung Man Yuk is the most beautiful woman :p

I also loved COMRADES. I am glad that came out when the Garfield in San Gabriel was still open so I could see it in the theater.

Chicago is going well. Friday's day screenings weren't too crowded but night screenings were packed. Theater managers were skipping around with big grins on their faces to see so many people. The Water Tower has been struggling ever since they re-opened showing only "art" films. Managers said we had seven times more ticket buyers than their next best film, Bowling for Columbine. q/a's were fun, got some surprising questions. a woman said she thought it would have better if the characters weren't Asian American! So far Saturday matinees are twice as crowded as Friday's. Perhaps because Ebert was on local news last night to do a TV review. Tim Hugh of Chicago AA Film Showcase taped it for me. Maybe we can get it on the web. Chicago folks are doing a great job of supporting the the film, particularly Joyce Jeng and her street team from Asian Social Networks. EB

i heard good things about the opening last night from the chicago asian american artists collective folks. fu and kat told me you guys met up after the show for some drinks and had some interesting conversation about asian american male sexual identity politics. i'm really looking forward to catching this film.

and jeez, what the heck did you say to teh woman who said it would have been better if the characters weren't apa? was this an asian woman who said this?? i wouldn't be surprised if it was... what were the crowd demographics like? a lot of asian support?

glad to hear it's going well so far.

That is so messed up! Like she couldn't get over the fact that people were on the big screen that didn't look like her or act like she thought Asian Americans acted! (I assume she was caucasian, right?)

There are so many movies without heart these days, she should be thankful for the heartfelt films, no matter what color the faces.

And I'll always think, from now on, "that woulda worked a lot better with Eugenia, Michael, Jacqui, Matt, Tamlyn, Jason, Roger, etc". Up hers.

Yeah, so there's some good stuff going on in Chicago. That was the latest news this past weekend.

Also, this past weekend, there were two private screenings to a Cinema Club in San Jose. We (Eric, Eugenia, Rob Humphrys, and I) had a good time up there. Its nice to see an audience that can appreciate film and story telling.

Looks like the week is already starting to point towards this weekend. Hope you all can make it.

Heres a funny something that is in the SF Chronicle today:

http://sfgate.com/eguide/movies/pages/insider/

Haku
05-05-2003, 08:11 AM
From the Chron article:

" 'Having (an Asian American) lead character you have to stare at the whole time is an empowering thing,' " the actor (Michael Idemoto) said with a chuckle. When the stoic mechanic does open up, it's to the female pal he secretly adores. She's played by Eugenia Yuan, Idemoto's real-life girlfriend. "

<<sound of hearts breaking, one by one>>

Thanks CHICAGO!!!!!!!!...... KEEP IT GOING!!!!

Lots of reviews this past week all over the net. Some are pretty funny, but all are good. If you need to convince people to go, Asian American or not, point them in that direction. We are all looking to have a blast in SF and San Jose, so the more the merrier.

Thanks for playing the quiet but intriguing mechanic...It's always those quiet ones you have to watch out for! I liked the interview in SF Gate. When I can I get a copy of Sunsets, O.B.I.T.S. and V for our film festival?

eugenia - Great interview on GR. You are an amazing person! I have a passion for learning languages as well...Would love to talk to you about it sometime.

The two of you have such great on AND off-screen chemistry! Something to be jealous of...

HAVE FUN TONIGHT! I'll be buying a ticket even though I can't be there. I have a gala event tomorrow night for APA Heritage Month that I helped put together. Big Opening tonight in SF! The UA Galaxy put Charlotte Sometimes in the 600 seat theater!!!!

If you can't be there, just like for BLT, buy a matinee ticket for a weekday show - this afternoon would be best! Sounds crazy, but a good investment.

Tickets for Charlotte Sometimes (http://www.movietickets.com/movie_detail.asp?movie_id=37248&SearchSort=1&SearchZip=94131&SearchRadius=40&ShowDate=0)

If this link doesn't work, just go to www.movietickets.com and search for Charlotte Sometimes in San Francisco (so far the San Jose screenings don't come up for advance ticket sales)/

Eric made this film for "about the price of a nice new car", taking loans from his family. BLT has grossed over three million by now, and some would argue (myself included) that CS is even better written, and really deserves to do as well or better than BLT.

Show the studios that we want more movies like CS and BLT!

L O S A N G E L E S:
Opens 6/20/03
Exclusively at Laemmle Theatres in Los Angeles, Pasadena & Encino

Haku - I totally agree with you that CS is an even better written film than BLT. I'm buying a ticket even though I live in another city.

If you're like me and want to help out but aren't in SF, you can buy tickets at Moviefone.com:
http://www.moviefone.com/showtimes/movie.adp?movieid=11074&theaterid=1065&date=20030509

Illinois sold out a 1500-seat theater for Charlotte's screening at Roger Ebert's film festival, so 600 seats should be a cinch for you Bay Area folks!

Thanks to everyone who came out to support the film last night. We packed the house and had a really fun q/a after with Mike, Eugenia, Jacqueline and Rob Humphreys cinematographer. No one asked Rob anything though; it was mostly politics. Three questions in a row were about APA's and sexual "representation" and what it was supposed to say about APA's. Party at The Spot was crazy fun. Old friends and new friends from Hawai'i, San Fran, and Chicago even! Tonight we're heading down to San Jose to host a similar screening/shindig.

Thanks also to those who responded to "charlotte sometimes" QUESTIONS. I'm doing final stats today... sorry it took so long, I got slammed with the premieres.

SEMI SPOILERS::::

I've seen the film three times now, and each time, it brings out more details that I didn't notice before. The fear in Lori's eyes at the restaurant when Darcy dares her to reveal the secret...the intensity of Darcy's tragic reversal of character/soul extinction at the end...the light fading on Justin in his car...

DVD, DVD, DVD!

Thanks Eugenia and Michael for the props - but hey, when you've got a quality product, the only thing to do is to support!

Thanks for hugging my mom, Michael - she got a big kick out of that. She thought you and Eric were "cute!" I had to practically stand on her hand at first during the Q&A, because her first question/response was "what morals are you trying to teach the younger generation?" :p

But after Eric spoke, she "got it", and then told him in the lobby, "this is what really happens."

Eric said "I don't think I could watch it with MY mother!", and I replied "Well, I consider it brief exposure therapy!"

So props all around - that was an awesome screening. I don't think I'll make it this Friday, though! Wish I could!

Ok, so I saw it in Dallas!! A little bit of a dissapointing crowd...about 25 people including myself. They took a vote at the end of the movie and asked everyone to judge it on a scale of 1-5. (1=very bad, 5=very good) Friday they'll give awards for the most highly rated movie. I gave it a 4.

It was a great story and I liked the way it made me feel. One question though.. I'm not sure if the copy we watched was defective or what but much of the dialogue was hard to hear and the film was grainy and a bit blurry. That was distracting for sure, but didn't ruin it. Michael ur a super hottie and really good at the smouldering silence thing.

Usually the sound system will determine the quality of the sound in the theater....Maybe the levels werent set right. Sorry bout the bad experience...It's happened here and there.....As for the print being blurry, prolly a projector issue....

Some love from resident film critic "janey" at Okay Player (it's buried under other posts, so I'll post the text):

http://www.okayplayer.com/boards.htm

There is every reason in the world to see this film.
It's a lovely little film with no pretensions.

It's a simple story about people having the kinds of emotions that we all have -- sadness, loneliness, jealousy, happiness, and so forth.

It's a first film by an Asian American filmmaker, and the cast is predominantly Asian American. Since this is a viewpoint that we're not exposed to every day, it's worth seeing.

That said, these roles could be taken by actors of almost any background, and the story would still ring true.

No, it's not perfect. But it's just a first film. And as someone who is biased in favor of films without violence, special effects, or computer graphics, I am always happy to see people putting their hearts into their work.

And if that's not enough for you, it feature the music (and a short glimpse) of Cody ChesnuTT.

But hurry. It's in limited release and it will disappear quickly.

Haku, can you share this link? These are pictures from East West Players benefit organized by HapiHour. Cast of "charlotte" in #22, cast of "charlotte" plus Hong Kong film star Daniel Wu in #23. Daniel was my guest that night. He was originally going to play "Michael" in the film, but couldn't due to schedule in HK. There is also a "Daniel Wu" sighting link on Yellow World that would be good to add this too. Thanks! Eric

I just went and saw it up in Pasadena, I shouldn't have as I have way too much work to do, but I had to see this, and I loved it! It was phenomenal.

Everyone in the cast was amazing. I loved how the characters and the dialogue felt real. I loved the performances of Michael Idemoto, Jacqueline Kim and Eugenia Yuan! Wow!

I just wish I could have gone to the premiere and the parties! It was wonderful. Cool to see that part of LA too, I love Spaceland, and strange to see it so well lit :p

Eugenia you were amazing!

The June 2003 issues of VideoSystems has an aticle on DV Film Makers, and it features Eric Byler and CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES. I didn't realize the whole film was shot for $20,000.00. I love how films like this get blow ups that cost more than the film!

I love this movie, and it is inspiring to see a movie like this get a release!

Great movie. I saw it this weekend. It's a movie I would see twice because by the end I figured out what the underlying story was... by then I was like.. I should have paid closer attention to certain things he said...hehe...

Also.. all the actors/actresses are a good looking bunch:)

them orientals...so exotic (http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/entertainment/weekend/6687364.htm)...
"The cast, mostly Asian Americans, helps maintain a sense of exotic distance, perhaps a well-intended message by the filmmaker."

I just saw the movie. I was one of two people in the theater during a matinee. I've told all my friends to check it out. To all actors, writers, film techs and everybody involved, awesome job. This movie inspired me as to the possibilities of realistic, contemporary stories in the urban environments that we are all used to. There was serious richness there.

Just finished watching all of the special features on the CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES DVD, and was thouroughly impressed. I am glad this film got the DVD treatment that it deserved.

It includeds 2 commentaries, one with Eric Byler, Michael Idemoto and Eugenia Yuan and one with Eric Byler, Jacqueline Kim and Matt Westmore (which I thought was a but supperior because it is actually 3 commentaries edited together, 1 with just Byler, one with Byler and Kim, and one with all 3 of them) which are both enjoyable, though some of the same material does find it's way into both commentaries.

Also there is a Roger Ebert moderated Q&A with Byler, Kim, Idemoto and Marc Ambrose, which is imformative, and enjoyable. It would have been nice to have attended this screening.

And finally there is a behind-the-scenes / Blooper reel, that uses parts from the Commentary and shows the alternative takes and footage, and is a fun watch.

Actually the things I found most interesting about the DVD was finding out how much of the film was ad libbed, and that the original ending of the script was actually scrapped 2 days into filming, so the actors didn't actually know where their characters were going to end up. Also very interesting is the number exercise that Byler used with Min and Idemoto to do the final supper scene. There is some amazing non-verbal communication in this scene, and it is really cool to see how Byler got this by just having the actors say numbers and give each other looks. I have never thought of or heard of other cases of this being done in film, and it had impressive results.

I am glad this movie got the recognition it did, though I think it desserved more, especially for being made for only $20,000.00 and being such an impressive film, and I hope this DVD release will expose this film to more people.

Someone at g4 techtv asked about Sunsets, she was in the film industry... I doubt you'll ever see it on dvd. I got a bootleg vhs, but that's not ok to watch. The sound is off the soundstripe of the film... that's wackness. Mike has to work on it, if we want to do a dvd... otherwise, it's just in the can (film speak)

Speaking of which Michael's got some other projects coming up... They're personal ones of some sort, but maybe you'll see them in your local film fest.
