yeah, the title of the show is a bit misleading. OC is a big county. but i think the show is supposed to revolve around the rich people in south OC. so no cheezy white boys in S-10's and Hurley duds. it's more like wealthy cheezy white boys in BMW's, Ferraris, and Hummers.

no no no no no no

no

OC is just a really big county in between riverside and LA. Its a mix of Dirt poor mexicans (Santa Ana), Vietnamese thugs (Westminister), dumb-ass "Bro-Dawgs" (Huntington Beach), and a lot of semi-rich white snobbies.
...and Disneyland is there.

Orange County is really nothing special. South Coast Plaza is a great mall though.

yes/no/maybe. OC is a big and diverse county, as DoMo_cLeVeR indicated. but the tv show is focusing on the southern part, closer to the coast. Newport Beach and below, along PCH. this is a fairly snooty area. if you're driving anything less than a BMW, then you're pretty much a peasant. :p

slightly off topic: i think Malibu would be a loose So Cal equivalent of the Hamptons.

yeah, the celebrity factor is one thing. but the real pisser is the fact that Malibu residents are blocking off access to the beach, trying to keep the "commoners" out. it's a public beach! :(

Newport Beach really isn't that snooty. I was raised there. Most people there are living beyond their means just to fit in.
If cali has an equal to the hamptons I would guess that its where those celebrity ranches are up in wine country.

I'll watch the first episode if only for Mischa Barton.
She won me over in "Lawn Dogs" and I think she's been long overdue for some crossover exposure. She's been lingering in the fringes of the indie/theater scene for quite awhile and has done some tv roles here and there.

this new show takes place in south OC, near the coast. most asians in OC live north/inland.

nothing makes me want to shoot myself in the head more than a show about super rich crackas from the burbs and how they live such dangerous lives.

i like the part in the commercial where the guy is all "this is how we do it in the O.C.!!!" ooooohhhhh...intimidating. man i bet theres nothing that strikes fear into people more than hearing some guy in a polo shirt, khaki pants and whose parents own a yacht say "this is how we do it in the O.C.!!!"

All in all i was entertained at 1 in the morning watching my taped episode a bit crunk. I like the story, and the setting, and will continue to watch it. I just hope it's done better than Pasadena or Models INC. I really do need a 90210/Melrose Place replacement.

i really dont like that they called it the OC.....because lets be honest.....the OC is made up of a a little more diverse culture....they shouldve just called it Gated Community, Newport. lets be realistic now.....and that girls boyfriend was totally missing the goatee, backwards cap, hurley shirt and wraparound sunglasses on the back of his head.....

also....this....is total sacrilege....the creator was on KROQ claiming that it was going to be as good as Six Feet Under....all i have to say to that is....HA! YEAH RIGHT!!!!

was the second episode a really badly disguised but entertaining nonetheless homage to "Rebel Without A Cause"? That Seth character is so giving me Sal Mineo vibes this episode. The three of them running around the model home was so like the last third of Rebel...

I missed most of the last episode and caught like ten minutes of it. They're re-running it on Monday, I think. I'm trying to keep up, but it's only the second episode and it's already losing track.

DJ LunchBox
08-13-2003, 05:13 PM
hahah, that's so true jingy, huh. Anyways, the second episode let out a floodgate of character info. Seth's character is hella funny, but the Marissa character is a little too much poor little rich girl. In any case, FOX sure is whoring the series out by playing each episodes more than twice.

Another funny tidbit was the story FOX 11 did on the city of Chino, and how the city manager and mayor felt it unfair that the show made the city seem eww, when in fact it's a pretty nice city. heh.

Martin - FYI

second episode contained a conversation between the geek and the popular girl next door around what music they listen to:

she says "Punk - because I'm angry"

and then rattles off "stiff little fingers, the clash, and sex pistols" as her points of reference. too bad she had crap playing in her car.

geek replies with "oh my god, I listen to the same music as you. i'm going to go kill myself now".

i think it's interesting that the geeky kid has all these cool posters in his room ie. The Jam, Weller, Ramones, etc. but why the fuck would he have a fucking "Trapt" poster in there??? Tell me that? Set Designer, you're so fired.

last night was funny as shit. I kept trying to remeber when 90210 tried to deal with the same thing.

Speaking of 90210 I tried to associate The OC's characters with the BH ones. Here's what I came up with.

Rya ~ Dylan
Seth ~ David
Luke ~ Steve
Marissa ~ Donna
Summer ~ Kelly

There weren't enough to account for Brenda and Brandon.

C'mon Ryan's already just kicking it in the pool with seth and his potential 25 year old grandma like it's nothing? yeah, right. luke got shot last week and Marissa lost her virginity in the last 5 minutes of last night's show? okay, sure.

"You're too late" she says. HA.

I have never laughed so hard in my life...well, maybe earlier in the show when Seth Cohen tells his wife they should move back to Berkeley so she can buy that art gallery she always wanted in Sausalito or hey, how about The Mission? double HA.

An overly cliched and unoriginal teen angst that you could probably catch watching any old "90210".
Shall I list the cliches? I'm doing it anyways
- the bad boy but really is a good boy protagonist
- his alcoholic, addict, bad (take your pick) mother
- the sweet love interest girl next door that has the...
- short lived antagonizing jerk boyfriend who sees the protagonist as a threat and beats on..
- the protagonists nerdy best friend who makes witty sidecracks.

Throw in some parties, something being stolen, shaky "real" gritty camera and voila typical crap. By watching the first episode I predicted the entire next three seasons.

Why do people like it so much you say if it's so crappy? Escape. Everyone wants this easy drama filled "perfect" life. The inherent standard American ideology.

And the show is still terrible.

90210 had a bit more substance. ;)

but i think you got it right... The OC is really unoriginal. if you watch a lot of tv, you can catch scenes / stories / themes that were probably influenced from other tv shows and movies. the OC is one big cliche. and that's why it's popular. the general tv viewing audience doesn't want any complicated stories and characters. they just want to be entertained.

however, i'm not sure if this show will last 3 seasons. since the stories are too predictable, i'm sure people will lose interest. the show will probably be replaced with something more stupid like, "Temptation Island vs Paradise Hotel Death Match" or maybe "Who Wants To Marry My Millionaire Cousin".

I still can't help enjoying this, even the reruns!

Sad thing is after tomorrow's episode, it was gonna be put on hiatus for 6 weeks till the end of baseball. In an article in today's LA Times, FOX has ordered a full season of the show(Only 9 episodes are made so far), but they haven't decided when or what time slot they are gonna put it in. They were planning on putting on Thursday nights, which is basic suicide for any show, considering it would go up against Must See TV NBC, or the sleeper hit CSI. No word yet on the exact time, but hopefully they keep it on Tuesday's since Smallville's been moved to Wednesday. = \

Just got done watching the past 3 shows...(haven't missed an episode).

Definitely my fave new show. After 8 years of living in OC and working in the apparel industry, the show is an awesome guilty pleasure for me.

Seth is my favorite character.

Love their take on the Cali vibe and all the people are easy on the eyes (thank god no Tori).

I knew I was hooked when I spotted the cocaine snorters in the first two episodes.

Love the formula of having a party event in EVERY episode.

I haven't had time to read the other posts, but does anyone else call Ryan a young Russell Crowe? They should put the Luke guy in the next Starship Troopers.

I guess eventually those types of references have to be inserted into popular culture, cos it's there somewhere. A good-third probably knows who they are, so why not?

mpyre
09-21-2003, 08:32 PM
That Death Cab reference is actually an indication that the actor playing Seth is basically playing himself.

I read an interview with Brody (the actor) from the recent Elle Teen or YM. He put Death Cab as one of his favorite bands. He's also been a skater since 15 and he's into geeky stuff like comics. He even said that he took his girlfriend to a midnight screening of X2 and she was the only girl there.

Oh, he's from San Diego and he did a lot of odd "actor" jobs before getting the role.

...I was reading those mags from a huge pile of free magazines that I got from ASR...

* teen pregnancy.. Seth is gonna get summer knocked up.

* street racing.. no teen drama is complete without a street racing episode.

* in the wrong side of town.. the kids get lost while driving to a party and somehow end up on the north side of OC, where they narrowly escape an encounter with a group of ethnic people.

* the cheating episode.. now that Ryan is in school, he has to maintain his grades. or else he goes back to juvie. will he cheat on that test? or will stay in the honest path?

last night's recap:

http://televisionwithoutpity.com/story.cgi?show=112&story=5655

The Rescue
By Joanna | Season 1 | Episode 8 | Aired on 2003.10.29

Welcome back to The O.C. (bitch), where Adam Brody looks adorable wearing an ugly patterned shirt (but only briefly), contemplating his APs, sweetly listening to Summer, lisping Marissa's name, making a quirky face while answering the phone, questioning whether he's radical enough, and awkwardly pointing out his bed. We learn this week that Marissa is still living but hospitalized, having survived her Tijuanan overdose. Ryan, meanwhile, is attempting admittance to The Harbor School (which, when said quickly as these characters tend to do -- particularly one character who we love best -- sounds a good bit like "The Harvard School," and thus comes off even more pretentious, if that's possible). Lady Heather is maneuvering to get Marissa committed, leading Ryan, Seth, and candy striper Summer, wearing Spencer's finest "Naughty Nurse" costume (Happy Halloween!), to bust her out. They run all the way to Jimmy's apartment and then wait for him -- for some unknown reason -- in the dark. Also this week, Sandy starts his first day of selling out, at a firm which we learn is the law equivalent of Costco. There's also a great bit during which Seth attempts to cover for Ryan's absence with Kirsten by claiming he's on a diet. And studying. Naked. And then Ryan gets admitted to the Harbor School even though he missed the aptitude test, and Marissa gets to live with her father even though running away only proved she's even less stable than they thought. Perhaps most importantly, we learn that Seth has a toy horse named Captain Oats. Take that, China. There's only room for one prettiest pony in this town.

If there were an asian character on the show people would most likely be complaining about two things. How "white-washed" said character is. Or how too stereotypically ethnic the character is.

what are you talkin' aboot?

anyways, i'll indulge you angoraphobia...

let's see...they have thanksigiving dinner, and guess who comes over? Caleb and Marissa's mom!!!!

Seth is talking to ryan about not having any women, but now he has 2...and they show him making out with both of them!!!!!

Sandy tries to hook up his lawyer partner with Marissa's dad! and julie (marissa's mom) catches them chatting!

and the clincher...ryan's bro calls him from jail...and needs "help."

and that's next week's episode!

angoraphobia
11-12-2003, 09:10 PM
oooooo.....do you think theyre gonna write ryan's bro into the show?

i like the idea of marissas dad and sandy's partner hooking up.....it'll make julie kinda jealous in a weird way....

Yes. I am also hooked on this.

oh man can this show get any better?!?

Smallville at 8 and this at 9 makes my wednesday's stay at home night!

Seth now turning into the pimp playalistic homie, scoring two fine honies?

I just really can't stand that gold digiing bitch of Marissa's mom, And Sandy better not EVEN try to make a move on his partner. His wife's too fine for that!

chaow!!!

estrella
11-13-2003, 11:28 AM
Sandy's coworker is so not sexy. I was cringing at her attempt to seduce him with all her crawling and bending.

Marissa's mom is pure evil. I love her and her skanky gold digging ways.

Seth still rules. If all the dorky boys looked like that in high school, maybe I would've enjoyed it more.

What happened to the Abercrombie ex?

estrella
11-13-2003, 11:38 AM
I don't know what business he's in, but somehow their family went bankrupt and he started stealing money from random accounts he was in charge of to keep up his family's spending habits.

It was all revealed in that episode with the cotillion where Marissa's blond friend's (the one her Abercrombie ex cheated with in Mexico) dad punched Marissa's dad.

I think all that would make sense if I could keep track of everyones names...

estrella
11-13-2003, 12:04 PM
no problem (and thanks!)

Oh yes and because I invest way too much of my time into this show and therefore really need a life, here's some spoilers (from here (http://forums.fanforum.com/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=6&t=001468&p=)) highlight at your own risk:
Episode 10 "The Homecoming"
Ryan enlists Marissa and her vehicle to make a trip to his old neighborhood to settle a outstanding debt his brother Trey had before going to jail.

Arturo, a friend of Trey's, is holding a vehicle which must be worked on to get it running.

Marissa meets Arturo's little sister Theresa, the girl Ryan on and off again dated for years. Marissa and Theresa have a little "getting-to-know-you" conversation which doesn't end so well.

Episode 11 "The Secret"

Ryan and Luke have to do a report together for school and in the process Luke's dad comes out of the closet and Luke comes to spend the night at the Cohens'.

Luke's dad is friends with Sandy and Kirsten so he comes to talk to them for advice and Luke overhears and goes home with his dad.

Episode 12 "The Best Chrismukkah"

Marissa gains a friend in her therapy group, Oliver. Ryan and her get classified more as a couple and Seth has issues with women.

Airs around Christmas season.

Marissa goes on a shop lifting spree and a bottle of beer gets Ryan and Marissa pulled over by a cop.

Episode 13 "The Countdown":

Based around New Year's Eve. Kirsten and Sandy plan a quiet night out.

Hailey, Kirsten's sister, returns from a 2-year backpack tour and claims stake on the pool house, leaving Ryan the sofa.

Hailey uses the Cohen home to throw a rager of a New Year's Eve party leaving the boys freaking out.

Marissa says "I love you" to Ryan, her boyfriend now, and he says "Thank you."

Julie is now traveling through Europe with Caleb.

aaahh. Luke. That's Abercrombie's name. I knew it was something bland and forgettable.

Johnney5
11-13-2003, 12:04 PM
yeah marissa's dad was a broker/investor. he took money that he was supposed to invest in other stuff for friends, and put that into shit stocks, and lost a bunch of money.

HAHAHAHA OCD...f you dude..."you go girl?" i laughed when i read that.

i can't help getting so worked up over this show...it's just so FANTABULOUS.

hey jackson, i think there's an encore presentation tonight, so don't miss it.

LOL!!!

I'm so there

Yes yesterday's episode was the bomb!! Seth has risen and fallen as the underachieving pimp. The best scene is Seth in the kitchen when all the family's arguing, and then here come Anna and Summer.

Summer: "Anna!?"

Anna: "Summer!!??"

Anna & Summer : "SETH!?!?!?!"

Marrissa's mom is perplexed, Gramps is beaming. Too funny. :D

Summer: "I can't believe I kissed you!"

Anna: I can't believe I kissed you!!"

The whole time i was yelling at Seth calling him a dumbass for making Anna leave! Arrrgghhh!!! This is definitely getting taped tonight.

i think she was just getting her flirt on. since Seth was oblivious to her previous come-ons, maybe she felt that she needed to be more flirty. (er, i think that's a real word). :p

d'oh, i've been a bad viewer, i haven't caught the show the last couple of weeks. it's been tivo-ed, so maybe this weekend i'll catch up. i did see most of the Teth hijinks last night, really funny.

also, i was driving down hollywood blvd last monht and i saw this guy out of the corner of my eye standing on the sidewalk, talking with two of his buddies. i could have sworn it was Teth, so like a fucking stalker, i cut in front of the guy to my right, swing back around to catch him again. sure enough, it was him and at that point he and his homies were sitting on the sidewalk just hanging out. AND, i was also listening to death cab at the same moment.

i can't believe how excited i was. me = lame.

They were just trying to give it that HD look but got that psuedo gritty urban look.

So this show has now grown on me, but more because of the mom who is hot. Seth's mom BTW.

i know what the secret is!!!!!!

well not really, but my theory is that Seth's mom tells someone that she kissed Jimmy Cooper. That's it, that's the secret.

Great episode, pretty much on the ehh side compared to the rest, but very refreshing.

It seems like they're gonna be going the road of 90210 where everybody's buddy buddy, but lets hope not too fast. The best part was the beat down. Seth going back to his pimping wayz, what to do!
