View Full Version : Pen Flicking

45rpm

Since you people were talking about pencil fights....

Who here seriously pen flicks? I think here in Sydney we attribute the pen flicking skill to asians, with the others following suit (because it can seriously look damn cool, esp when u are bored in class)

I started when I was 14, marking people's clothes around me with pen marks. Eventually got it, i've got 2 styles, but can never manage the spin around the thumb and back...

I don't really do it now that i have a laptop but interested in ur experiences if any

i used to do that shit. but everyone be doing it. im no racist, but white people do the lame basic ones. ha. i like the half dollar thing that bad guy does in that old Richard Greco movie. i forgot the name, the one where he drives a red ferrari or lamborgini or something. i use just a quarter since i aint got it like that. it's where you use the tops of your fingers (not the ends) to flip a quarter down and up your hand. nah mean? that shit's dope.

Damn! what the hell is the name of that Greco show?

the show was 21 Jumpstreet. Im talking about a movie though. He was like some secret agent or soemthing. Dressed to Kill? i dunno, maybe im way off with that title. i could have sworn something like that. License to Kill is James Bond, i think. damn. maybe my still-living-in-the-80s aunt will know.

That Grieco movie was called "If Looks could kill".

One other particular thing of note - which you might find of interest Martin. He played the Ghost Rider in the tv series, "Marvel Action Hour: The Fantastic Four". Crazy props for that I think. Incidentally, this is not the really bad Fantastic Four movie.

ya, I know what you're talkin' bout 45rpm, and although white people are starting to do the pen flicks, it does seem more like an asian thing. Wierd how it seems as though asians all around the world seem to be doing the same type a thing... Hey! they filmed 21 jumpstreet at my school here! without their filming, our high school would never get a new paint job... keke Hey, did you guys also do these other useless talents in highschool such as 'gleeking' and bubble blowing with only the saliva in your mouth? 'Gleeking' is a term we use up here in vancouver, it might be called different in differnt areas. It's where you shoot a stream of saliva from under your tongue. The thin stream shoots out of your mouth like you were a human water gun! It's kinda hard to explain for those who haven't seen it before. I cannot gleek, I don't know how they do it...you somehow train your muscles to flex where saliva is excreted into your mouth. The area is right under the base of the tongue. I can do the bubble blowing though! and no, it's not where you strech over a film of saliva over your lips and blow like you were a baby foaming at the mouth, this bubble blowing you actually have a bubble (on average about 2cm in diameter) shoot off of your tongue and the bubble actually floats in the air.

Gleeking? Is that what it was called. Personally I found it kinda grossed - I never found it any different than just plain ole spitting on the sidewalk. But the bubble on the tongue thing was kinda cool. I use to practice that in my car when I realized that I was probably getting the back seat all wet. Ick!

I am so excited that somebody brought this up. I remember in elementary school the pen spin around the back of the thumb was the most amazing thing...and only my korean friends could do it! Later in high school I noticed that Cambodians and also Vietnamese possessed this talent. Of course, this was something i could never grasp, perhaps because I am only half. It is the most graceful and amazing fidget manuever i have ever witnessed. My friend could do the spin for EVER just like she was hula hooping. Still, when i pen flick, I can get a spin, but then it just flies off my hand. I see this as kind of an Asian American folk tradition passed down through the school system.

Where I come from, gleeking was called glicking. Maybe the SoCal dialect? No, I never mastered the art, but I didn't try that hard, either.

Pen-spinning was definitely around when I was in high school and it was the Asian folks who did it.

What about throwing pencils up in the air so they'd stick in the acoustic/asbestos paneling on the ceiling?

I didn't know that Richard Grieco was in those Marvel shows in addition to Jump Street... But I do know that he was solo in a show called Booker!

with gleeking, there's no snot in the mix. that's a little more comforting. no loogie and all.

that's right. with gleeking it's just pure saliva. no foam, no bubbles, no phlem. But it is still like spitting i guess..

Martin, I am familiar with the pencil stuck onto ceiling thing too. At our highschool we had a variation on that though..people would get ZigZag rollies, (the 'cigarette' rolling paper for those who don't know) roll them up, soak one end of the paper roll in their mouths, and flick it up so the wet side slaps onto the ceiling and dries, leaving lovely rolls of paper sticking out from the ceiling tiles. I have no idea how these guys do it though, I've tried, and the paper is so light, I can't get it to move through the air fast enough to get anywhere, and to toss it so the wet end hits the ceiling with enough force that it is able to stick there is yet another challenge. Also, the ceilings were pretty high too! I'm just amazed when I see the paper hanging down from the classroom

Is pen flicking that thing that Val Kilmer does in a scene of Top Gun?

damn I'm hella bored at work and I'm trying this one flick where you start with the pen in between your middle and ring fingers. the top part is resting on the web that separates your thumb and index finger. You do the flick and the pen flips up, circles your thumb and some how ends up between your index and middle finger. I can do the flick except for the part where it lands one set of fingers up. This may be extreme dork style, but it must be done!

God, i used to do all of them. Gleeking, blow'n bubbles, pen tricks. what the hell was wrong with me? I'm 23 now and when I come over to my mom's house, I see my brother doing that instead of studying. I have to smack him, cause he's more concerned about that than the homework. Let's stop the madness now people... Pick up a better habit. Start smoking crack or somethin'.

damn, this pen flicking thread was revived? don't old threads eventually get deleted off the system? I set my configuration so that whenever I go onto the GR forum that it only shows threads that have been active in the past 2 days. That way it only shows the recent stuff and it doesn't log down my poor crusty old computer.

pen flicking: you hold the pen between the ends of your middle finger and thumb and then make a slow finger-clicking motion and the pen will *magically* rotate around your thumb. the hard part is getting it back.

or better yet, get your local asian to teach you! ~.O

i've been doing it since '93. singapore.

saw one ambidextrous chinese chick do it with both hands. she'd be sitting in chem, red pen in peft hand, blue in right. writing in blue, spinning red pen (back and forth!), make little notes in red, flick the blue pen back and forth with the other hand.
jaw droppingly cool.

coincidentally: the tarentino top gun take is somewhere under here:

yea.. i memba thoze days.. kinda dangerous tho when they finally decide to fall down.. junior high was all about those silly things.. member the paperclip popper uppy thingy.. our principal had to get on tha horn and tell students to stop that mess.. oh yea and idiots would also tape pins/needles to the tips of paper airplanes and thrown them off the balcony.. wtf right? and lets not forget the wave of self-induced fainting that cauzed quite a stir..

also amazing, was thoze guys who decided to pierce their own ears.. yikes!

one year, some trend started where kids in stead of putting their trays on the thingy for washing would just straight up toss tha trays in the trash!! silverware and all.. maaan how kids choose to rebel..it just boogles tha mind..

I'm white, but somehow, I've always been able to do the pen flicking thing...I think it had something to do wth being in debate...all the kids doing that were able to pen flick...anyhow, I can filck it forward, backward, around my thumb, middle and ring fingers...the coolest one I saw was someone who could get it going in both directions on the thumb, back front, back front...really hard cause the pencil is never really suppoorted by anything...I suggest if you want to learn, just go sit in a room with a tile floor and start practicing...its alot likesnapping your fingers, you just need to do it with then pencil between them and then the only had part is catching it...but after awhile the sound of the shit hitting the floor will become so fucking annoying, you'll be bound to get it down...

as for the other shit, I remember gleeking, and we did call it that in socal, but I was never able to get that down..well I think I did it once, but ever really gained control of my powers...the bubble thing, I saw people do it, tried but never got it until I started reading it in this post...I just succeeded on my first try...cool
the encil in the roof, we did that shit, but gummy bears were alot more fun...you put it in your mouth, get it wet, take it out and let it dry a little so it becomes sticky...then you toss it up on the roof... the shit would stay there forever. I also used to give eraser burns to the guy who sat in front of me in math class...I rubbed the eraser up the back of his neck...a one quick stroke thing...he would naturally start swatting at the back of his neck, but by the time he did that, there was nothing there...and the teacher would be like...hey do you have a problem or something??? that was cool
we also used to take bic pens arpat and lay the tube (pen body) on a desk and using two or three fingers, press down on it which forced it forward...the fucking thing would get lift and go flying accross the room...pretty cool...
damn...I can't believe its been like ten or fifteen years since I did all that shit...well, I guess I still do the pencil flicking subconsciously...

10-15-2001, 07:21 PM

gleeking? I didn't know there was a term for it. Dammit. Since the world revolves around me, I thought I was special and discovered it myself.

I can do some pretty bad ass streams of saliva.

S•Sly

I have no idea how people gleek. I was never able to do it. All I could do is the useless spit bubbles.

10-16-2001, 04:33 AM
I dunno about pens and pencils but did anyone else used to fire those family-sized glue sticks at the ceiling? All you need is a nice shatterproof ruler and a teacher that never looks up. I can't remember how many I shot up at the ceiling during maths lessons, maybe if I go back to my old senior school they could still be there.

10-16-2001, 04:32 PM
eek i just really needa know how 2 gleek (that rhyms hehe) well newayz, it would be tight if sum1 could explain it 2 me ~+TiGhT+~

Ryan
10-16-2001, 04:35 PM
damn...how to explain this....its like you gotta gather saliva at the base of your mouth, like behind your teeth and then you use yer tongue to kinda move it in between yer chompers and thats where you get the squirting effect...i think.. heheh

S•Sly
10-17-2001, 06:11 PM
I remember asking the kids who knew how to gleek how they did it, and they said that they actually flex that area under the base of your tongue where your saliva secretes out of. And I guess with practice they were able to force a stream of saliva out of there?

I used to think that they did it the way Ryan explained too.

So I'm not sure how they really do it. Anyone who knows how to gleek care to explain?

"white people just starting this pen flick thing" WTF??!?! i've been doin' this shit since 8th damn grade! i as well can do the silver dollar finger roll, i can shuffle casino chips, and other various casino chip tricks.

gomi
10-17-2001, 09:12 PM
Hmm... the way I gleek is by twisting my tongue (so it's perpendicular to it's usual... resting area..?) and I flex it a few times, all with my mouth closed. Then, when I feel my tongue is flexed enough, I open my mouth and raise my tongue real quick so my saliva can come shooting out.

I don't know any other way to do it.

is that when you break the li'l hangie thing on pencaps? i do this. my family hates when i do it though cuz sometimes that thing comes in handy for hangin pens and shivving suckaz. i'm pretty dangerous with a retractable pen too. it makes a decent projectile, but once you lose that li'l plastic doothanger you can never use it as a pen again.

I remember getting mean looks from my SS teacher in 7th grade at JHS 189 in Queens, because I kept dropping my pen...trying to flip the pen...finally got it tho, on a same day I think...Around the same time, we all figured out how to unlock those masterlocks with black plastic dial...Speaking of Asians flipping pens, I always wanted to learn how David Letterman's trick where he flips the pencil in to the air and catches it...That was the coolest...Never learned it...While I'm tattoing, I have to stop the urge to flip my tattoo machine...Haha
