Has anyone seen Beat Takeshi's new film 'Kikujiro'?
I just saw it, and I would like to see what other people think of it.
It was a little flat, and I think he tried very hard to move away from the stereotypical view on him - that hardlined gangster film. There must have been heavy influence of his TV comedy shows.
Also Takeshi's acting was a little more restrained, he needed to be, but I thought a little overly so.

Kikujiro was good. Takeshi was playing a more regular dude, but at the same time a gangster, hence that tattoo. His wife is as tough as he, which is a side part, but it tells you, he's just some dude. Not a superhero gangster.
The film also had some dumb comedy sketch stuff, which is typical of his films. Remember in Sonantine, there was that sumo scene on the beach? This one had those type of skits with the same dudes! Those dudes are part of his comedy team.
But most of all, I liked the fact that it was subtle and at the same time, a strong story. It's in his quiet moments that I think Takeshi kicks ass. Maybe that's what you mean by overacting... He should just sit quiet more. But he handled acting along side a little kid really well i thought.
i haven't seen kikujiro yet but a couple weeks ago i saw "Brothers". It's a good film, it's not his best but I think it's defn'ly the most violent. A little too much for the average person, it resembled too much like "goo wak jai". The story plays alot on sentiment and loyalty but so does all his other movies. But if you're bored and you feel like seeing alot of downplayed violence then go see Brothers.
huh.
i just finished writing an essay for school.
i'm completely drained as my post should indicate.
peace.

Kikujiro was really charming..and a very different Beat film. Although it had the same pacing as his cop/gangster films, moments of comedy/dialogue/stuff goin' on and then long pauses of just the actors moving along - no dialogue, etc. There was no mistaking it was a Beat film. Brother was almost a parody of his more well-known and liked films Sonatine and Hana-bi. And I understand it was edited for violence before it was released in American theatres. It's currently out on dvd, region 3, but is expected out in January with a region code 2 released from the UK. Check out Violent Cop and Gonin for more violent Beat films.

What happened in that scene after he asks that truck driver for a ride, where the shot is from a far showing him punching the guy? It looks like he is stabbing the guy.

I thought it was okay. Something I'd watch once; no more, no less. Definitely interesting but not all that entertaining for me. But what do I know? Austin Powers(both), Grease, and Brady Bunch the movie(both of them) are on my top 10 list...

i like when they play with the kid. when those two bikers get painted up to look like a fish and an octopus. and then when they played naked statues or whatever that was and the bald guy took everything off. and then to cover up his penis they superimposed the octopus head on top. bwahahahaha!!!

This movie was too much like 'Central Station' from Brazil. (I wonder if Beat got his idea from Central Station.) I recommend you watching that instead. The characters are more engaging.
Same plot: woman takes boy to meet his father(who the boy has never met) after boy's mother is killed in an accident.
In Kikujuro, you never get the sense that the boy really wants to see his mother and in some points, you really don't care and get lost in Beat's off colored characters.

No one mentioned my favorite part when they're trying to find a way get a car, and takeshi puts a nail on the road. Another good part was near the beginning at the race track and takeshi hits the boy's hat (or something) really hard? Then the camera moves and you see the kid was sitting down or something and takeshi wasn't really beating up the kid. Anyhow, it's funnier on the screen than this mangled retelling.

He was beating him with a stick. He throws the stick a second later. The first time I saw it, I thought it he was beating the truck driver with a golf club, and they were stopped at a golf course. Then I realized it was just a stick.
