This movie was so good. Definitely recommend it. It's faithful to the comic in spirit, but it does deviate quite a bit, for you hardcore fans. Of which I am a part. But it's still really excellent. Thora Birch and Steve Buscemi are great in it.

You could tell in the lobby who was going to see this movie, all the comic book fans.

I can't wait to check out Ghost World in LA this week (along with Hedgwig).

About your comment on noticing who in the lobby was there for Ghost World...I said the exact same thing but for a different flick--American Sweethearts! My buddy's girlfriend made us see the Julia's film to make up for all the testostorone bloated summer films we put her through. You can tell in any theater lobby who was there for America's Sweethearts...chicks out for a chick flick!

i saw it at anjelika in new york...as soon as they said they were about to seat for ghostworld, all these people made a mad rush for the line. this one girl who was seeing another movie was screaming 'animals! animals!' cuz she got ran over. there were definitely some fanatics in the audience!

I saw it at the Angelika too and there obviously was some NYU film student behind me pontificating about some film bullshit nonsense. He was talking loud so everyone could hear his bullshit nonsense. I felt like cramming my Value Pack Combo down his filthy piehole but I was hongry. T
here were some cute Enid types in line. An old man sat next to me and only laughed at the jerk off joke.

There was some vegan covered in vegan campaign buttons and next to her was a girl who resembled Howdy Doody. Did you see them?

It's an alternate version of the scene where Seymour confronts Josh at the convenience store. I'm a credit watcher so I saw it by accident. I thought the movie was excellent too. I saw it on vacation in LA last week. Will definitely see it again when it opens here.

Watch for the Enid doll here at the GR site, we're expecting to sell

The GREEN HAIRED version that's limited to 500 in Japan. They should be on the site real soon. The black haired version is the American version which is in edition of 5,000. Also watch for the Money Mark doll! We got them.

ghost world finally started showing in my town this week. there has been absolutely no advertising for this movie. most of the people in the theater were comic book fellas or enid types. This one guy had a t-shirt that said "hung like a mosquito".
good times.

*spoilers***

the roommate who "would be in his room" with an uncooked grilled cheese sandwich and a carton of milk ruled. The artwork and students in enids class were perfect; i liked the unicorn/horse a la "velvet glove cast in iron".

I just found this thread hunting for info on how to get the great Press Pop Ghost World t-shirts. I really love this movie and the comic & screenplay.

Any news on whether Giant Robot will be selling the green haired Little Enid doll? I ordered one from Fantagraphics but I'd like to get one for a friend too and Fantagraphics says that it will be two months or something almost unbearable until they have them in stock.

I am starting development on a Ghost World / Clowes tribute site called Enid's World http://www.enidsworld.com/ so if you have any good links or inside info on GW or DC I would really appreciate if you could drop me a line, my email address for that is enidsworld@infin8ty.com. There's nothing there but a logo right now, but hopefully I will have enough time and energy to get a decent site up ....

just saw it last night as well. i think your right about the bus being a metaphor for death. but that's kind of depressing when you think about it. what do you think the pants where all about?

i read the screen play before watching the the film and they cut a couple of scenes that i thought were important to the plot line. in the screen play enid sleeps with josh right before sleeping with seymour. so cutting out that scene makes josh totally pointless to the story. also in the end josh ends up with rebecca.

Doug stole the show and yeah I saw the Zen guerilla shirt altho' it did seem out of place on him. I'd imagine an Iron Maiden or Slayer t-shirt or something.

I'm not convinced about the mystery bus=death idea. Maybe someone who has read the comic can comment. It just seems like Enid moves on.

Josh did seem kinda pointless. His character had no, uh, character. I don't know why anyone was fighting over him.

jardine

I thought in the comic (I read it awhile ago and don't own it, unfortunately), Enid goes to college in the end. Then the next panel is her coming back off the bus, but older now. She sees the dude painting "Ghost World" on a wall but he runs away when she tries to approach him, and then she sees Josh and Rebecca in a diner together (from the outside of the diner--she doesn't actually go in and they don't see her either). And then Enid says something like "You've grown into a fine young woman." The End. So I thought the ending of the movie was more of her moving on, not so much the death thing. Just my 2 cents...

mystery bus is escape from mundane. It is something that should not be but when she see's it for the first time, she is given hope that her "crap fuct" life will get better. She gets on the bus, is like believing. She has no idea where that bus is supposed to go.

i just watched the movie a short while ago (and long after i read the comic book).

for the most part, i think it's a very successful adaption of the comic book, but i think there are a series of related deviations from the comic book that make the movie a morally uncomfortable experience, and because i don't think the moral discomfort was intended, it really detracted from the movie.

i think it's clear from both the comic book and the movie that we are meant to sympathize with enid, as a sensitive, intelligent, interesting person. but if you take a step back from the considerable charm of the character, it's clear that in the movie she is callous, selfish, manipulative, and hurts every single main character in the movie in substantial ways, while continually bemoaning that she is the victim. there's a hollowness in the movie because of this discrepancy between how we're suppose to view enid and her actions in the movie. the excuse for her behavior is that she is young, confused, and willful, but the same can be said of rebecca. i almost feel like, in order to be sympathetic to enid, you have to sort of discount the thoughts and feelings of everyone around her.

spoilers below....

and i think this is where the movie compares unfavorably to the comic book. in the comic book, enid is not so relentlessly spiteful and selfish. instead of mocking a handicapped classmate, we see enid recoil in horror when she's confronted with a dying classmate. and in the comic book, we don't see enid cynically manipulating her teacher with a racist poster, or completely ruining seymour's life.

i'm not saying that all movie protagonists are supposed to be likeable.... but in this movie, enid is clearly meant to be likeable, but her actions don't justify this feeling. and frankly, it seems like the movie itself is as manipulative as the enid character in trying to get the audience to identify with someone who, in all her actions, shows herself to be completely selfish and lacking any concern for others. in a way, this movie reminds of me of todd solondz's movies, in that they both tend to elicit these vaguely directed feelings of disgust towards the characters.

35ft6
12-22-2005, 04:01 PM
^ That's a very interesting take on it.

My take was that the complexity of Enid's personality in Ghost World was a nice break from how teens are depicted in most other films. You know, totally one-dimensional, the nerd, or the jock, or the rebel without a cause angst filled type, or the slut, or the virgin, etc. She's going through her angry phase, lashing out at the mediocrity all around her, but she'll eventually come around. At least she's not simply passively accepting the world around her, lashing out inwardly, believing that she's the one that's fucked up. I'm biased, though. I grew up in a shitty little town in the midwest and I dyed my hair, pierced myself in the bathroom, etc., anything to differentiate myself from my mundane surroundings. I wish I still had more of my old teen fight in me. I'm not sure if I've matured or simply given up. It's easier to play nice, keep your mouth shut, and blend in with the fat, lazy herd. Yeah, Enid was "mean", I guess, but I think she had a point most of the time. And when she didn't really have a point, I blame her youth.

^ Scarlett J for a while was the one gripe I had with the movie. I've since eased my Scarlett J Sucks stance. I still don't think she's that good looking, and I still think she's an overrated actor, but maybe she wasn't so bad in Ghost World. Maybe.

SCARLETT JOHANSSON has given boyfriend JOSH HARTNETT cause for concern, by branding monogamy unnatural and questioning romances between actors.

The screen stars have been dating since April (05) after meeting on the set of THE BLACK DAHLIA, but Johansson's comments have sparked questions.

She says, "I don't think human beings are monogamous by nature. It's difficult - you have to put a lot of effort into a relationship.

"I think it's hard for actors to date each other because they are so damn moody. You are away from people constantly and having a relationship that is strictly by phone, it is miserable.
