Nintendo Mystery Product Revealed
New dual-screened portable will be focus of E3 2004.
January 20, 2004 - For months Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has been offering Japanese newspapers vague comments about a new mystery hardware that the company would launch in 2004. Nintendo of America today pulled back the curtains on the top-secret device and it looks to be good news for Nintendo fans worldwide.
The company's mystery machine is in fact a dual-screened portable game device that is entirely separate from both the GameCube and the Game Boy Advance. It will be marketed completely free of its sister hardware. It's called Nintendo DS for Nintendo Dual-Screen.
Nintendo DS features two connected 3-inch TFT LCD display panels, and two separate processors. The device features an Arm9 main processor and an Arm7 sub processor.
The portable will not use GameCube optical disc or Game Boy Advance cartridge based media. Instead, it will play software on semiconductor memory of up to 1 Gigabit, according to the manufacturer.
Nintendo explains the importance of the dual-screen setup: "Players can look forward to being able to manage their game progress from two different perspectives, enhancing both the speed and strategy of the challenge. For example in a soccer game, users can view the whole game on one screen while simultaneously focusing on an individual soccer player's tackle or goal on the other screen.
i don't know, but i think this console sounds like it might appeal to hardcore gamers, but i thought hardcore gamers hated nintendo? it might alienate their core audience... could this be the death of nintendo?

Can't wait to check this out along with Sony's PSP at this year's E3.
I forgot to post that online E3 registration (free) ended last week for proffesionals. They don't really check your business so we passed off our graphic design business as a developer. A few years ago we registered as a retail company.
Anyways, I think Nintendo is shooting themselves in the foot. I hate the fact that it's still cartridge based while the PSP uses optical media.
Oh wells, as long as we keep getting Metroids, Links & Luigis.

IGN (http://psp.ign.com/articles/513/513479p1.html) has an article on the official annoucement of the SONY PSP Handheld.
http://pspmedia.ign.com/psp/image/article/513/513479/e3-2004-sony-officially-unveils-the-psp-200405110136976.jpg
May 11, 2004 - To say that Sony's PlayStation Portable handheld system dominated the company's E3 2004 press conference would be an understatement. Officially unveiled approximately 20 minutes into the presentation, the new game system was a big hit with the crowd and finally answered several of questions that most of us have been asking in the year since the hardware was first announced.
Scheduled to be launched in Japan at the end of the year (North America and Europe get it in the spring of 2005), The PSP is available in PlayStation 2 black with a 16:9 widescreen TFT LCD display that boasts over 16.7 million colors and a resolution of 480x272. Dimensionally, its numbers are 170mm x 74mm x 23mm with a weight of 260 grams. Basic portable functions like built-in stereo speakers, exterior headphone connector, brightness control and sound mode selectors are among the lineup of features, and the buttons mirror that of a PlayStation 2 controller almost exactly (Square, Triangle, X, and Circle face buttons, a digital pad, start, select, and an analog thumb stick populate the face, with two shoulder buttons on the top).
Additionally, the new system comes standard with USB 2.0 and 802.11b Wi-Fi wireless LAN connectors that allow for multiple PSPs to be simultaneously connected to one another. Data and software can then be downloaded either by using the wireless LAN connections or through the use of a Memory Stick Pro Duo. The PSP also adopts the small high-capacity optical medium Universal Media Disc, the UMD. This format not only allows for 1.8 GB of space, it also provides an extremely versatile format for games, music, and video. The press conference demo showed off the trailer for Spider-Man 2 (the movie not the game) as well as Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children which is coming to both the DVD and UMD formats. To protect the content, a robust copyright protection system has been developed which utilizes a combination of a unique disc ID, a 128 bit AES encryption keys for the media, and individual ID for each PSP hardware unit.
Unfortunately, Sony did not announce a price point for the system so how much the unit will cost is still somewhat of a mystery. We expect officials to announce a more formal pricing structure at the upcoming ECTS or Tokyo Game show events; but we wouldn't mind if something a little meatier came down the pipeline before then. Click on our media page below to view the first official images from the system and stay tuned to IGNPSP for more throughout the day.
Sure it isn't as far along as the DS, but it sounds so much more kick ass! Too bad it doesn't have 2 analogue sticks for shooters though! That woudl be amazing.

I found out a little bit of how the battle system of MGA is.
It is like a strat-RPG where enemies and Snake take turns moving upon a grid. At points on the grid you get draw actions or cards that change atributes or attack. you can sneak behind a guy and draw a neck breaker card and snap a guys neck. If someone spots you you can draw a gun card and cause damage.
It seems like an interesting concept... considering that there are few truely original games on the PSP.

Nintendo DS Launches on Nov. 21 in North America -- at $149.99!; New System Comes with Embedded PictoChat Feature, Strong Publishers' Support (http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20040920006110&newsLang=en)
http://www.geekzone.co.nz/images/news/nintendoDS.jpeg
REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 20, 2004--From the very start, Nintendo DS(TM) broke the existing rules of video game play. Two screens, not one. Wireless connection for game play and personal communication for the sheer entertainment of it. Flexible game control by voice and touch, not just with buttons. Nintendo's newest innovation, Nintendo DS, will make its worldwide debut in North American stores on Nov. 21, and then in Japan on Dec. 2. It will sell at an MSRP of $149.99, making it an immediate mass-market attraction. Nintendo DS will become the company's first system ever to make its sales debut outside of Japan.
"Nintendo's mission remains unchanged: expand the game experience," says Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo Co., Ltd. "Nintendo DS is the road map to the future of video games, and most clearly demonstrates the type of innovation that players demand."
Nintendo DS is the dual-screened, hand-held video game system redefining the idea of interactive entertainment. One screen allows for touch input using a stylus, while the unit includes both voice recognition and multiplayer wireless features. The sleek silver-and-black system sports a sharp, angular design.
Consumers immediately will be able to pick up and play the new system, as it comes with a free software feature, PictoChat, embedded in the system hardware. PictoChat allows DS owners to write messages with an on-screen keyboard or the stylus and send them wirelessly to other DS users nearby. Users can text chat, draw artistic messages or share secrets, all without saying a word. And a Nintendo DS in sleep mode will spring to life if it senses another DS in transmitting range, alerting users to each other's presence and setting the stage for an impromptu conversation or game session.
More than 100 companies have signed on to create games for Nintendo DS, while Nintendo itself is already developing its first 20 titles. Electronic Arts, the world's largest independent software developer and publisher, already has announced that its powerhouse franchises of Madden NFL, The URBZ: Sims in the City, Need for Speed Underground, Tiger Woods and GoldenEye will support Nintendo DS.
"Each time Nintendo creates a hand-held, it introduces new elements of play and sets a new standard for mobile gaming," says Larry Probst, EA's chairman and CEO. "The DS is no exception - Nintendo has another big winner with the DS."
The complete lineup of games planned for the launch of Nintendo DS will be announced in the near future. In effect, Nintendo DS already boasts a library of more than 550 games because it is compatible with single-player modes of games made for the world's best-selling video game system, Game Boy(R) Advance SP.
Nintendo chose the United States to lead the worldwide launch of Nintendo DS because of overwhelmingly positive and enthusiastic reaction from consumers and to take advantage of the holiday sales season. After the subsequent launch in Japan, the system will be available in Europe and Australia in the first quarter of 2005.
Nintendo DS has a flip-top cover that protects both screens. Two speakers on the unit's face let users hear virtual surround sound, while its dual screens open games to a multitude of possibilities. Nintendo DS sits 148.7 millimeters (5.85 inches) wide, 84.7 millimeters (3.33 inches) long and 28.9 millimeters (1.13 inches) tall with the cover closed. The new media format for games means that Nintendo DS has no moving parts that could be misaligned if the unit is dropped or jarred.
The worldwide leader and innovator in the creation of interactive entertainment, Nintendo Co., Ltd., of Kyoto, Japan, manufactures and markets hardware and software for its popular home and portable video game systems. Each year, hundreds of all-new titles for the best-selling Game Boy(R) Advance, Nintendo DS(TM) and Nintendo GameCube(TM) systems extend Nintendo's vast game library and continue the tradition of delivering a rich, diverse mix of quality video games for players of all ages. Since the release of its first home video game system in 1983, Nintendo has sold more than 1.9 billion video games and more than 170 million hardware units globally, creating enduring industry icons such as Mario(TM) and Donkey Kong(R) and launching popular culture franchise phenomena such as Metroid(R), Zelda(TM) and Pokemon(R). A wholly owned subsidiary, Nintendo of America Inc., based in Redmond, Wash., serves as headquarters for Nintendo's operations in the Western Hemisphere.

Ok...been too busy at work to post...
Anyways, the DS is awesome. Some quick observations before I get back to work:
--Rechargeable battery is replaceable.
--Mario 64 DS comes with amazing mini-games that use the stylus. Kind of like Wario-Ware type of games. Been loving the mini-games more than the main game.
-Feel The Magic from Sega Japan is a great collection of Japanese-style mini-games. Check out Sega's official site for a cool movie. It was done by 2 female staffers and I dig the graphics style and loungy music.
--Pictochat is broken down into 5 chat rooms with 16 users each. I still haven't been able to talk to any strangers, but I'll try turning on the unit at a public place like a mall after Turkey Day.
--You can put 2 games at the same time in the unit: 1 DS game and 1 GBA game. On the startup screen, you just choose which game you wish to play. Really cool.
--You can use any headphones with the unit. On the SP, you had to put a stupid headphones adapter.
OK, back to work.

Pooches pack Nintendo's portable punch
DS outsells both PSP and PS2 combined in first week of Nintendogs release; Nintendo's handheld still on top a month later.
Nintendogs, Nintendo's puppy-petting game, has helped bolster DS sales after a sluggish stretch brought on by the launch of Sony's own portable device, the PlayStation Portable. According to Media Create, the DS has been the best-selling piece of gaming hardware in Japan since the release of Nintendogs on April 21, outselling both the PlayStation 2 and the PSP. The only exception was the week of May 9, when overall game sales fell as Japanese workers returned to work after the golden week of holidays.
The Nintendo DS was trailing the PSP and PS2 the week before the release of Nintendogs, selling 21,698 units against 28,950 PSP units and 30,572 PS2 units. But when Nintendogs arrived, DS sales exploded to 96,191 units, outselling both the PSP (33,004) and the PS2 (33,080) combined. Sales of the DS are starting to settle down now, but as of the week of May 16, the DS continued to outsell both the PS2 and the PSP, selling 29,808 units, compared to 27,370 PSP units and 24,122 PS2 units.
Nintendogs is a virtual-pet game featuring real breeds of dogs. The game is sold in different editions, each housing roughly five types of puppies, from Chihuahuas to Labrador retrievers. As a virtual owner, gamers will pet their pooches using the stylus, order commands through the integrated microphone, and let their canines sniff other gamers' Nintendogs wirelessly

Supposedly, a lot of support for the DS Katamari Damacy is being switched over to developing a port for the PSP. I'm just getting that information from another forum, so I don't know how accurate it is, but it seems logical enough, considering Sony will have two KD titles under its belt already by the time the handheld version ever comes out.
I hope Electroplankton and Nintendogs end up being just as cool as they seem to be.
I didn't know that Viewtiful Joe was coming to DS! Awesome.
Any news on its pen-teractive novelties?

i saw some video clip at ign showing the game in action. it looks like there's a vfx capability where you use the stylus to sort of split the screen in half and drag the one half to the left or right (like so a platform that was previously unreachable can now be jumped upon).
it's true that sony will have the two kd games on the ps2 already on their side, and i suppose it would make sense that they'd put a version out on the psp. the thing is, they're not sony developed games; namco developed them, and they can develop for different platforms if they want, so i'm keeping my fingers crossed on a ds version.

I'm hoping for Katamari on both handhelds. Even though the game's massively popular already, it can always use more exposure.
I wonder if We Love Katamari and the portable one will be as cheap as the original!

Survey shows DS edging out PSP in Japan
Half a year after the release of Nintendo's and Sony's handhelds, the dual-screen portable still holds the lead.
The latest issue of Otonafami magazine gives a glimpse at how the next-generation handheld war between Sony's PSP and Nintendo's DS is shaping up in Japan. According to a survey conducted with 1,000 gamers above age 20 by the magazine, 14 percent said they owned a PSP, 25 percent said they owned a DS, and 19 percent said they owned both. Out of the remaining gamers who don't own a next-generation handheld, 31 percent said they are planning to get a PSP, while 35 percent said they want to get a DS, 19 percent said they want to get both, and 15 percent said they didn't want either of the handhelds.
Otonafami reports that the average PSP owner in Japan owns one to three games for the handheld; 27 percent said they owned one game, 24 percent said they owned two games, and 22 percent said they owned three games. The statistics for the DS were a bit different, with 23 percent of its owners saying that they owned more than six games for the handheld. Curiously, two percent of the users for both the PSP and DS said they had no games, which makes one wonder what they play.
Owners of both handhelds also seem to think that they aren't taking full advantage of their machine. Seventy-five percent of PSP owners replied "no" when asked if they were using all of its hardware capabilities. Many PSP owners commented that they don't understand how to use its multimedia functions or that they find it too troublesome.
The comments also show that users view the PSP as a multimedia device more than a gaming machine. Sixty-seven percent of DS owners answered "no" when they were asked the same question. However, DS users complained that their DS's Wi-Fi capability goes unused, especially if they live in the countryside where nobody owns a DS.
When PSP owners were asked what they thought about their handheld, they praised its fantastic graphics and entertainment functions and commented that they found its battery life surprisingly long. The main PSP complaints were that its games were mediocre, its game library had too many ports, its load times were too long, and that some games froze often.
DS owners said they enjoy its backward compatibility to GBA games and touching the handheld's screen. On the other hand, they also said that the audio in DS games isn't loud enough, there aren't titles for adults, and the screen sizes are too small.
When looking at the two handhelds in terms of sales figures, the Nintendo DS has sold approximately 2.2 million units in Japan since its launch on December 2, versus the PSP's 1.39 million units since it went on sale 10 days later. The top-selling games for the two machines in Japan are listed below.

Europeans buy 1 million DSes
Nintendo's dual-screen handheld conquers another continent; Brits are the portable's biggest buyers.
While Sony is taking legal action to prevent European gamers from buying prelaunch PSPs, Nintendo is patting itself on the back for shipping a boatload of its latest handhelds to the continent.
This week, the company announced that it has sold 1 million units of the DS in Europe since the portable launched three months ago. According to figures from Nintendo, half of those units were sold in the DS's first three weeks on the market. Overall, British gamers were the biggest buyers of the DS, with over 250,000 units sold on the island nation. Nintendo did not release sales figures for any other country on the continent.
With worldwide DS sales now exceeding 6 million, Nintendo is understandably pleased. "The European launch of Nintendo DS has been a massive success with sales shattering all previous records in the opening weekend and remaining consistently strong," was the spin from Jim Merrick, Nintendo of Europe's senior director of european marketing. "European consumers have adopted Nintendo's sense of fun and innovation to give fantastic support to the Nintendo DS."

Holy Crap! check this out! a japanese dictionary to pratice your Kanji with a DS touch screen!
http://www.gamebrink.com//images/nds-rakuhiki-jiten-jap.jpg
Draw Japanese characters in katakana or hiragana and have the Rakubiki Jiten Japanese dictionary translate it to English and vice versa. For poor calligraphers, a keyboard may be summoned for virtual touch typing entry. The built-in dictionary is designed like a paper-based book where pages are flipped by dragging the NDS stylus from right to left to flip forward or from left to right to go back a page. Words in the dictionary are presented in both Japanese and English sections so one may perform translations from either direction and find the meanings of words quickly. If a fellow Rahubiki Jiten user is within range, character queries may be sent to and fro via the NDS' built-in Picto-chat software to share thoughts or juggle ideas.

Test your cognitive skills in math, pattern recognition, object matching, and other mental gymnastics which were designed in concert with Professor Kawashima of Touhoku University in Miyagi prefecture. When presented with a math problem, poke the stylus on the screen and conjure up the solution in your brain before tapping the screen with your solution. Other question require verbal answers that are spoken into the NDS mic in order to register. The good professor appears as a disembodied head which provides personality and guidance during the tests. Do well on your testing and the professor nods in approval and smiles like a beaming parent. Do poorly... and the professor is still in an encouraging mood but beams less effusively.

DS for general fun factor. Nintendo games are simple and fun to play.
PSP for cool factor, bells and whistles. play games, watch movies, listen to music, and so on.

You can check over at www.nintendowifi.com for a list of compatible wireless routers.
If you're running a supported wireless router/AP with WPA encryption, your DS won't work with it. DS only supports WEP. In which case, you can either reduce the security level for your wireless router or buy the USB WiFi thing which, AFAIK, will only work for letting the DS get connected.
I need to get one of those USB WiFi jobbies because i have a Linksys AP (not a router).
I did go to GameStop yesterday. Got sucked in by their post-holiday "buy 3 used titles, get 1 free" deal. Walked away with "God of War", "Destroy All Humans", "Meteos", and "Nanostray".
Meteos is driving me bonkers, too! :p

gotta take my DS back and exchange it. super annoying glitch whereby two pixels on the top display don't work and show up as white spots, unfortunately, they are directly in the field of vision. other than that it's a pretty sweet little unit (we picked up the red mariocart bundle version).

I want to make sure I get Metroid: Hunters DS. Whats the best way I make sure I get one? Should I preorder with EB/Gamespot? I'm worried I might get fucked like the XBox 360 losers that preordered and still awaiting one.

i liked the metroid demo when the DS first got released. with wifi, it should be cool. im looking forward to it.
anyway i dont think you need to preorder the game, just get it on release day, im sure tons of places will have it.
the nintendo ds practically sold out in japan last week, and they seem to have handled it really well, no artificial limiting of supplies ala xbox 360.

Redesigned Nintendo DS Revealed (http://ds.ign.com/articles/683/683684p1.html)
January 26, 2006 - After weeks of rumor and speculation, Nintendo today finally revealed its expected redesign of the Nintendo DS handheld system. Called the DS Lite, this new design will be released in Japan on March 2, 2006 and cost 16,800 yen (about 140 bucks US.) The redesign retains all the functionality of the standard DS, but makes things smaller, lighter and brighter.
The modified dual screen handheld has been tweaked into a smaller chassis. The new unit measures up to 133 mm wide by 73.9 mm tall by 21.5 thick. (that's compared to 148.7 x 84.7 x 28.99 mm in the original.) DS Lite weighs 218g, compared to the 275 g of the original.
DS Lite's biggest new technical feature is its updated set of backlit LCD screens. The system is brighter overall, and will give the user the ability to select from four different levels of brightness for viewing and/or battery consumption. A few other cosmetic changes were made to the new DS Lite -- there's a new hinge design, the power light was put on the left side of the hinge and is visible while the clamshell is closed, the mic is moved to top/center while the speakers are more centered, the Select and Start buttons are set on the bottom instead of top, and the power button is no longer on the front, and all of the dark button colors are changed to whites and grays. The cute DS logo is also placed on the front. Basic functionality, otherwise, looks to be identical to the original DS.

smaller isn't always better, i'm finding the original DS already tiny in my hands (guess i've got big hands or something), anything smaller and i won't be having as much fun .
oh yah, i was wondering how many of you have "dead pixels" on your display screen. i bought my ds on boxing day and was dismayed to see two white dots on my screen. i took it back and what do you know? another dead pixel:rolleyes: anyways, i decided to keep it anyways as it wasn't in the middle of the display like the last one. i went on the nintendo website and was surprised to find it was a common problem.
kinda sucks cause it's not like it's a cheap toy..
did they say the actual screen is gonna be smaller? i think the overall redesign just makes it thinner and lighter, but i doubt they'd shrink the screen size in favor of less bulk.
joetron2030

Hmm... As far as I can recall, I don't think I had any dead pixels on my DS.

I'm concerned about playing wi-fi games like Animal Crossing on the new DS. Basically, your wi-fi settings are tied to the main DS that you registered online with.
I'm not sure if you can go online using your regular setting on a different DS.
I know I'll get the new DS, but maybe it would be cool to get another copy of Animal Crossing, transfer my town over, and figure out tricks (like duping) that could be done between two AC Towns.

IIRC, you wou'll need a new friend code if you use the same game but a different DS if your're using nintendo wifi. it might be different if you connect the ds to ds function..

I'm probably going to pick up an old-style, used DS sometime, because their prices should be getting pretty damn ripe.
From what I've heard, they're not dropping the GBA slot, though it's hard to imagine them shrinking it to that size without doing just that. Nintendo's already put a lot of support for stuff into the GBA slot, though, like with Warioware and Metroid Pinball.

Nintendo announces download service for DS (http://www.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/2006-02-09-ds-downloads_x.htm)
Nintendo announced new wireless features for its DS portable video game player Thursday, including a free service that will let consumers beam game demos and other content directly to the device.
Beginning in late March, the company plans to deploy electronic kiosks at thousands of U.S. retailers including Best Buy and GameStop.
Owners of the dual-screen DS who go near the kiosks will automatically receive a notice on their devices offering game demos, movie trailers and other content for temporary download. The information will be erased from the DS once it's turned off.
The service uses the DS's local-area wireless networking capabilities, which until now had been used just to facilitate head-to-head play by gamers near each other.

Will Wright confirms Spore will hit the DS
Posted Mar 23rd 2006 5:00PM by David Hinkle
Filed under: Interviews, News
Ray Almeda, of AMN, sat down with the Spore creator yesterday evening and asked if gamers would be able to play the upcoming title on the DS (and Sony's handheld...thing), with which he responded "Yes...definately."
Will's past attempts in gaming have been nothing but gold, with his Simcity and The Sims franchises being easily accessible to people in all walks of life (heck, some of my assignments back in middle school were to build fully-functioning cities in Simcity) and pushed the envelope of conventional game design. It's no wonder that so many eyes are on him and his upcoming project. We just hope Spore on the DS will be WiFi compatible in some way.
Spore is currently slated for a 2007 release.

Good news folks. It seems that Walmart and Target have jumped the gun and started selling the DS Lite early...get'em while you can...or until they realise they messed up :P

Yeah, it sounds like some are saying that their local Target has it and it's even in the locked display cases but employees won't sell to customers until the official release date.
Your best bet might be to find someone who works at Target or wherever and ask a favor. ;)

It's about time. Now I can let moms keep my phat DS to sustain the addiction of Brain Age.
