View Full Version : Post Your Collage
Well, I would've wanted to start this with some better collage, but this is what I have on me today. It's the Valentine I made for my bf. It's very simplistic, and filled with things about us, of course! I will post some more tomorrow...

^ i completely understand - i pretty much always feel like that about my work - i hate that whole inferiority complex thing. just know that you're out there, doin your thing and that's what's most important. it's cheezy but you know!! :)
 & :* for bootsy! I was gonna bring some stuff in this morning, but forgot it at home, yet again. At least I remembered to close my windows. I forgot to do that the other day. I came home from work and everything was hanging wide open. Okay, back to collage...

sugarboots
04-09-2004, 12:16 PM
thanks!!!!! :)
basically i let a bunch of candles sit on it for a few months in the heat - it's not very complicated it just takes a looooooooooooooooooooooong ass time.. i don't think it's really a process either i was just experimenting. i tried doing it with wood but the candle i had wasn't dyed the right way...i actually switched that balloon collage over to a card and it looks much better - i'll post it when i get the chance ;)
tonybricker
04-09-2004, 12:21 PM
so the candles just sorta melt in the heat...? or the dye from the candles gets soaked up by the pic somehow?
sugarboots
04-09-2004, 12:22 PM
the dye from the candles soaks in and there is a thin wax coating on the paper. this was really old paper that i used too.
if you ever wanna stop by or anything to do art together, let me know ;)

Welcome to the Carnival Fabulon!
Co-curated and Press Release by: Chako Suzuki
The carnival rolls in sometime after midnight . . . The shrill siren song of a calliope beckons to all with a seductive promise of dreams and youth regained. — Ray Bradbury, Something Wicked This Way Comes
These [scary stories are] written by norms to scare norms. And do you know what the monsters and demons and rancid spirits are? Us, that’s what. You and me. We are the things that come to the norms in nightmares … These books teach me a lot. They don’t scare me because they’re about me. — Catherine Dunn, Geek Love
P.T. Barnum introduced America to its first circus sideshow over a hundred years ago; it has since become an obligatory part of circus culture. Barnum entertained the country by presenting people and acts from outside the mundane world, and the audience was bewitched. His freak show attractions simultaneously piqued the curiosity and repulsion of its viewers who kept coming back for more.
These days, a good carnival freakshow is hard to find. If you're tired of the same old smoke and mirrors tricks, come satisfy your cravings for a carnivalesque spectacle at the Cassius King Gallery. Curators, Alma Ronis and Chako Suzuki, are rolling in the Carnival Fabulon, a showcase of art inspired by such literary works as Ray Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes and Catherine Dunn's cult classic, Geek Love. Dare to ask yourself: "What is normal?", "What is freakish?" Will you run? Will you hide? Will you gawk? Will you laugh? How will you fare at the Carnival Fabulon?
Come see what's under the big top at the opening night reception on Friday, May 7, 2004, from 6 - 11:00 pm absolutely free! There will be a DJ line-up and artwork to buy, so bring your alfalfa! The show will only run until May 31, 2004.
Sideshow artists include: Alika Cooper, Carson Ellis, Martha Rich, Kathy Ruppert, Rachel Salomon, Barbara Rourke, Chako Suzuki, Maura Vazakas, Alexia Markarian, Tina Sedonne, Rebecca Westcott, and Elizabeth Washburn.
The four founding members of the Cassius King Gallery created the gallery because, as active participants in San Diego's burgeoning art community, they felt their city needed a place where both up-and-coming and established artists could show their work. The gallery provides an excellent space for showing and viewing art.
That's such a great theme for a show. I open one of my books with a quote from SWTWC. :)

Nice work! Have you seen Tim Biskup's card series? They had a show at La Luz De Jesus gallery in Hollywood a while back, but each card was individually mounted in a matted shadowbox style frame, with I think two color mattes.
Looked cool, and maybe your work would look nice in a similar frame style, showcasing the individuality of each one.
Good good luck to you.
