damn all y'all with your designer watches. mine cost $13.00 plus the amount to get it resized. it has an orange face and tells the time quite nicely.
maybe one day i'll be able to afford a nice watch. with diamonds. maybe one day...

Last time my friend Christine was in NYC she got me this supercheap Hello Kitty watch from a street vendor for $3. It's one of the best watches I've ever owned.
When I was in Jr. High, my dad went on lots more business trips to Europe than he does now. For a few years in a row he would get me a new Swatch watch every time he went to Switzerland (which was a couple times a year). I had the most kickass Swatch covered forearm EVER!
My favorite were the totally cheezy 80's Pop Swatches.
I don't like those bubble looking watches, or the ones that are supposed to look all punk rock on a leather band or something. It's all about colored plastic or silver metal.

when i was little i wanted the watch w/ the calculator on it, or the one w/ the little thing that transformed into a robot and stuff. i shot a booger outta my nose on a friend of mine (who owned on once) when i sneezed. it was awwesome!

I have a chrome watch with a red digital number display. It was from a European premiere of the movie "Pi". It even has the pi symbol on it. I had a Buzz Lightyear watch too. It had a button that made noise and had a laser light. I miss that watch.

I was impressed after seeing those dark i-control commercials. Then I went to their website and learned that Tim Burton directed the ads! Their cool meter went up a few notches. I commend their marketing department. I'm really into Indiglo and the i-control gimmicks. This is the first watch I've worn regularly since 7th grade.

My dad just came back from Taiwan and got me a new Swatch. It's a very flat watch. And kind of bright. Almost flourescently bright. I like it.

for xmas a few years ago my dad bought me a tag heuer. i had no idea how expensive those things are. if i did i woulda smacked him. i wear it lots though. i also have a huge, green ppg watch that has a digi-cartoon and talks. and a blue one with bubbles on the front. it flips open and is digital. and i have a rugtats one with tommy squirting a milk bottle.
why does knowing the time always make you feel better somehow?

i constantly look at the time on my wrist, cel, car, comp scren..
i guess cuz even tho u cant control time, knowing what is gives you a better perspective on when you want to do things and how much time you have to do it..it doesnt organize you but kinda acts like a catalyst?

I got a Baby-G, but I ordered it off the internet because I couldn't find a retailer anywhere near me. When it got here it was this ugly pee yellow/green color. I do like the watches though. I just made a big mistake by ordering it over the internet. It's called "Witchy" It tells your fortune and has all these little animals dancing around on the display. Too bad it's still in a box in my closet...mom wouldn't let me return it. damn.
Anyone wanna buy it?? lol What I meant is that its a very nice, soft yellowish-green color. yeah, nevermind.

they do have some cool stuff - but i'll warn you that its mostly girly stuff. i love it, but i took my bf there and he was bored shitless and wouldn't let me shop. but if you're in the area its definitely worth a look. they're the only store in the area that carries my favorite brand, super lovers/lovers house.

yeah, sorry i didn't mean to be so confusing. they do sell a lot of japanese stuff. but i forgot its mostly for girls. there were quite a few watches tho, and they're pretty unisex looking so you might find something. most of the other stuff was real cutesy and all (hello kitty and friends). there are always stores in chinatown and k-town selling japanese goods, but they're not funky enough. lemme ask around and i'll get back to you, k?

okay, so i stopped by air market on my way downtown yesterday, and they only had 2 watches which were pretty generic. if you are ever in the lower east side, check out ALIFE at 178 orchard street (off of east houston) - the outside of the store says amelia something, and it says ladies garments. disregard this and just walk inside. they have a few cool watches from seiko (funky japanese style) and the store itself is pretty cool but limited selection.

No pics, but...
I have a few watches:
Alba Spoon (original style)
Alba Volcano
Alba Spoon (long face that kinda looks like the head of the alien from, errr, "Alien")
Alba Spoon Blow
Citizen Independent Dot Matrix
2 G Shocks
Citizen Glass D Oxy
Alba AKA (black with a red display-friends call it my Darth Vader watch)
Nike Frozen Ambient (Nike are CRAP-the battery keeps dying and my wife's broke after 5 months!!)
Mao Tse-tung (bought in Hong Kong-he waves!!)
I'm a bit of a collector. I found a few cheap places in Tokyo to buy watches. and if you live in Japan, check Daiei-they get old styles and sell them CHEAP (about 50%-75% off!!!).

I gots the Seiko Secret Agent Watch from an Urban Outfitter in May of 99...
'been loving it ever since. Of course it set me back $239, but I still get comments about it every time I go out.
I first saw it in a DKNY catalog in 97-98 and I knew I had to have one.
My only complaint is that entering messages like e-mails and phone numbers take too long. I wish I could change the messages that scroll every ten minutes.
Other than that, I love the little ticker. I've brushed it against everything in town and it still looks good.
I'm not into the second version which is a bit too rounded.
Oh--I wish the band WASN'T made of black rubber.
In 2000, I met a guy (looked like a model) who had the Secret Agent Watch. He said every time a hot girl asked him for the time, he would click the message display button to display the message:
"Time for you and I to get together" or something like that. Not lying--he showed me.

I have a R2D2 watch. Itīs metal (donīt know what metal), Itīs cool and it cost 4 bucks in local toystore (it was in discount..)
It actually looks like R2D2 and when you press the middle "leg" it opens up and reveals digital-screen. I love it.

i'm pretty happy with my Timex Ironman. i've had it for 3 years and it still rocks!
The battery in my watch is going, it can't power the backlight anymore. It'll probably go to shit when I'm in Malaysia.
I like shopping for watches, but I have really trouble with "regular" watches, so I always go for digital.
I probably won't toss my current watch when it runs out, I'll just get a new one and maybe put a new battery in the current one.
I really like watches.
Worst watch I ever had was an Action Man watch, that played a siren when you pushed a button, and it had an emergency light too. That, or the talking watch that would get me into trouble at school because people would lean over and push the button, and I'd get shit for it.

i used to love playing boggle.....
i understand your quandry for i too had a similar problem when i first got my watch with the date on it.....what i did was set it to the date i thought it was and the next day, if i saw that it hadnt changed i just slowly clicked the date forward one.....OR you could (the next day if the date hasnt changed) move the big hand on your watch from 4 am to 4 pm and your date will automatically change!
wnoodle
09-04-2003, 06:44 AM
The watch counts time on a 24 hour scale. Thus move the hands until you see the date change (usually somewhere between 11pm and 1am), this indicates that you have reached midnight. The watch also knows it's midnight due to internal mechanics... Just as it ticks away the seconds, it has a much slower (unseen) ticker ticking away hours.
So, if the date changes at midnight, it is only reasonable to deduce that it will not change at noon, ergo, no date change at 12pm. Now you can set your watch accordingly.
wnoodle
09-04-2003, 07:03 AM
Addendum (sp?): Be sure to move the hands FORWARD for the date to change. Rolling the backwards will not help.

I bet it would make a great gift.
For the record, I bought my wife a Powerpuff Girls watch at one of those shopping mall watch kiosks as a present shortly after the birth of our daughter.
i still got mad love for Nixon watches
I bought a Casio calculator watch a few months back. I recently bought a couple watches from ebay.
I can't seem to remember the name of this watch, or find a pic of it online. It's a really chunky watch, they sold it mainly in Asian and in some stores in North America. It's really chunky, digital, plastic came in bright colors and had a carbon fibre version. It has a button and a pump on it so that you can pump air to make it fit more snug on your wrist.
I think they were pretty popular in the late 90's early 2000.
Can you guys and gals give me a hand in finding an image or the name of this watch.
Thanks
Vinz

I've worn a watch for the majority of my life. I've had a total of three in that time. Yeah, I'm attached to my watch.
Digital, black, not-classy, good-workin'.

Okay, I had this awesome watch when I was a kid.
It was black.
It had a squarish face.
Maybe three or four buttons on the edges/corners.
Digital readout.
And what I was convinced was a diamond right underneath the readout.
Any chance anybody can point me in the right direction?
if anybody is interested I found out what the watch I was looking for was called, It's a Seiko Air Pro.
I just got the 2005 Watch Annual woo hoo!

Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso is my damn favorite thing in the watch world. That, and of course Patek.

I think in the last month I've become obsessed with watches. I want to get a Seiko Orange monster (another big watch) and the Tissot PRS 516.
I've learned to appreciate Rolex & I really like classic looking brands like Chronoswiss, Patek and A Lange & Sohn.
Because I'm poor I think I will only get one nice watch in my lifetime.

I just bought a new "nice" watch a few days after Xmas (based on my current level of personal income).
It's nothing fancy or expensive because I don't have that kind of money. But, I did want something nicer that the two leather-banded, $60 watches I'd been wearing for over 10 years.
So, I bought a pretty nice looking (and fairly function) Citizen Eco-Drive chronograph watch. Got it on sale at Macy's when they essentially had a 25% off sale on their Japanese watches (Seiko, Citizen, and their lesser sub-brands).
The watch I really wanted was a 2000 Tag Heuer Kirium Chronograph Automatic. But, I don't know where I'd find one new and I don't have $2000 to drop on a watch.
Hell, I don't have $2000!
Hey jskang did you get the 8700? I like the one with the leather band and the deployment clasp.

No. I ended up getting the BL5180-57L (http://www.citizenwatch.com/collections/watch.asp?modelnumber=BL5180-57L).
I like it a lot.
yesterday I walked by this small watch shop owned by a modest Chinese man. He was playing the Chinese news in the background. I think he might have had 50 watches that he was selling I think most of them are not that great. He makes most of his money fixing watches. I brought a couple of my dad's watches to get fixed during my lunch. I went to my parents place for dinner and gave my dad's watches back to him. They were old watches that he got as a gifts from a long time ago. They had broken bands and he never got around to get them fixed. This is my simple watch story for today.

I saw a link online once for a digital watch whose LED was on the thin inside. In other words, if you looked at the watch's face (like you normally would) all you would see would be a blank brushed metal face. However, if you turned your arm at a 90 degree angle (thumb facing your face) you'd see the LED. Make sense? Anyone know wtf I'm talking about? Instead of the dial or read out being in the center of this square:

It would be on the inside:

I like it. Of course I can`t tell the quality of the watch... but it comes with a 2 year warranty, so I guess it should be pretty decent. The leather band feels nice. Good watch.

hah, that is pretty cool. I wonder what other game they're going to do.
The other day, I saw a watch at fossil that was either had murakami's smiling flower graphics or were ... heavily inspired by them.
I never buy watches, but I go in and look at them all of the time. How's the quality on fossil watches, do they scratch / break / whatever easily?
As far as non-formal watches, I'm fine with Fossil, or at least their more simple, classic looking watches (Some of their shit's straight up ugly). I had one for a few years till I broke its watchband in a rather serious skateboarding collision. Any watchband would have broken. The best part about Fossil is the no-questions-asked 11 year warranty. I got a new watch for free, and since they no longer carried that style I got to get a more up-to date one. So I got two watches for about $50, $60.
i dont like em for the most part but fossils will last forever

I recenlty bought a Citizen Eco-Drive chronograph watch with perpetual calendar. I love it. Except for one minor fact. I think the case is stainless steel and it scratches waaaay too easily. Argh!
For future reference, anyone one have suggestions for case material that's more resistant to scratching?
Also, that Asteroids watch looks sweet!

i just ran over to the nearest Swatch store and spent a while checking out the selection. I'm really into kinetic watches but the ones they had were pretty bulky and honestly... I don't spend that much time staring at the face of a watch to enjoy all the little springs and cogs at work.
So I went with a skin watch instead - one of the digital ones. It's kinda weird getting a digital swatch but it's definitely got style. Is there any use for their .beat internet time? That seems like some odd novelty factor that no one cares about.
Oh and I checked out the paparazzi watches... also really big and bulky but if you don't mind a large chunk of rubber on your arm then it's pretty cool that you can instantly get weather reports from your wrist.
Oh I also visited the Fossil site - check out the Frank Gehry watch. It's digital but instead of showing the time directly, like 11:50 instead it will say 10 til 12. It would take some getting used to but the idea is great.
i can't get w/ any of those japanese joints that takes 10 mins to figure out the time. I need a design icon that'll last me a lifetime.
I'm down to one watch now, a seiko titanium automatic , which is super reliable. The other two are dead, movado (battery) & nautica (battery + chronograph both dead).

Automatics are nice. The watch (http://www.citizenwatch.com/collections/closer.asp?modelnumber=BL5180-57L) (link goes to large image) I'm currently wearing is an Eco Drive watch (basically an automatic) plus it's got a perpetual calendar. I think that that's got to be one of my must haves for any watches I buy going forward.
