Watching Deadwood has turned me on to drinking whiskey. Anyone a whiskey fan, with recommendations?

I bought a bottle of Maker's Mark the other day. It's quite good, almost has a cinnamon taste to it. I drink it with Coke. Just tried it with Passion Fruit juice earlier today.

Japanese drinkers snap up whisky bottles -- at a million yen each

Thu May 12,11:45 PM ET

One million yen (9,360 dollars) may seem a fortune for a liquor bottle, but a Japanese seller said its premium whisky distilled over half a century has been such a hit it stopped accepting orders within a day.

Suntory Ltd. announced the sale of the liquor, Yamazaki 50 Years, billed as "a jewel of single-malt whisky", on its website Wednesday afternoon for 50 bottles only, with orders accepted through liquor shops and department stores.

"We have already stopped accepting orders as we received more than 50 orders by 11:00 am on Thursday," company spokeswoman Aya Takemoto said.

"Orders came in much faster than we expected," she said.

The bottles, each set in a special oak box, will be delivered in late June.

Suntory said the whisky is the longest distilled, at least in Japan.

One bottle contains 700 milliliters (1.47 pints) of whisky, meaning a tiny shot of one milliliter costs 1,429 yen (13 dollars).

Technically this is whisky but what the hell, it's the amber stuff we're talkin' about.

In honor of my 35th year jubilee tomorrow I'll be following in my traditional celebration of sampling a whisky that went in the barrel the year I came into this world. Appropriately I've located a couple dusty bottles to match my vintage. Tomorrow evening I'll be enjoying a large aged cut of beef cooked medium rare and a dram (or two) of

Macallan 1967

Springbank Single Cask Sherry Butt, Chieftain's Choice (!)

Springbank makes two of my all time favorites, but the jury seems to be mixed on this particular vintage.

Comments to follow.

it may help you to fill the glass with ice or crushed ice then let it sit for a few minutes....the water opens up the bourbon to more flavor...but don't let it sit too long because the water can water it down......

as much as i am a scotch drinker, i am not a bourbon drinker.

bourbon/JD makes me want to wretch, esp. makers and crown. It's too sweet, syrupy, and well, gross--

whereas scotch is nice and light and refreshing it's like going on a good date with a great girl, and not having sex but enjoying being patient and waiting for date #3 or 4; Bourbon is like oral sex with someone who i'm only marginally attracted to, is incompatible with my personality, has a long well documented history of drama, and furthermore has a disturbing visible sore of unknown origin.

wow
you put a lot of thought into this

it's like, everytime i sip some bourbon, i get this nasty lingering feeling, which is what i like to equate to the liquor based equivalent of guilt or remorse. same sort of timbre, taste, and sticky feeling, cept drunker.

and when i taste a nice scotch, it's more like "wow, all of these neat, distinct flavors that i may or may not agree with, i'm interested in knowing more, barkeep give me a double on the rocks" which is similar to meeting an interesting girl who may or may not have "all the things i'm looking for" but begs further inspection nonetheless.

drinking tequila is like paying for sex, except with nasty hookers. this is pure conjecture though, since i haven't drank tequila in years, and i've never paid for sex.

but things change. constantly.

Distillery unveils world's strongest single malt (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/02/26/uwhisky.xml&sSheet=/portal/2006/02/26/ixportaltop.html)
A Scottish distillery has announced plans to produce one of the world's most alcoholic single malt whiskies.

An ancient recipe is to be used by Bruichladdich to distil with an alcoholic content of at least 92 per cent on Islay in the Western Isles.

Managers at the firm believe it will be akin to a drink described 300 years ago by seventeenth-century travel writer Martin Martin.

In his 1695 travel book, The Western Islands of Scotland, Mr Martin refers to a quadruple-distilled whisky known as "usquebaugh-baul" and wrote what is probably the world's oldest whisky-tasting note.

He said: "The first taste affects all the members of the body: two spoonfuls of this last liquor is a sufficient dose; and if any man should exceed this, it would presently stop his breath and endanger his life."

Mark Reynier, managing director of Bruichladdich, said the distillery was doing it as a bit of fun and it was unlikely to be repeated.

He said: "In the long-run we will be looking at producing around 5,000 bottles and I honestly couldn't put a cost on it. It is a challenge.

"Although Martin's note hints at the dreadful consequences of sipping more than a teaspoonful, this will, I hope, have very floral qualities to it. Despite the high alcohol content, you know it's whisky."

I didn't manage to find any malts that were older than myself other than the ubiquitous Johnny Walker Blue, but I did sample two damned fine Islay bottles.

Ardbeg 1977, which was very robust with hints of lemony sweetness and the typical strong peat. Delicious.

They didn't stock Caol, but the knowledgable barman recommended the neighboring Bowmore Distillery. I sampled the 25 year and enjoyed the woody and nutty overtones.

Rare, aged steak dinner, malts (not chocolate) and a Punch Gran Puro made for a perfect evening.

if you run out of single malt, drink bourbon, if you run out of bourbon drink blended, if you run out of blended, drink canadian, if you run out of canadian, drink your urine, if yhou run out of urine...huff propane...if you run out of propane..steal robotussin from the pharmacy...if you are out of robo.......hold your breath until you are dizzy then hit your head against the wall a lot..if you run out of head or wall.....die....

Heh, rub some 'tussin on it! I wasn't getting drunk but I was drinking bourbon and fettiling my Wharfedales.

JW makes some good whisky for the price. I used to love it, now not so much.

don't hate on blendeds...i mean....canadian mist is a good blended.....crown royal and seagram's vo..not bad at all....but not necessarily sippin whiskey...as for blended scotch...ballantine's...chivas.....cutty, dewar's...grouse....not bad at alllll....

but yeah...no match for single malts...or bourbons......but everything has it's time and place........if your paycheck was not that big this month....i would rather drink a nice bourbon or blended than a whack ass single malt.....

but since this is your first...or rather bowmore was your first single.....being an islay.......and you liked it......good on you...in my opinnion...islays are more difficult for beginners to appreciate....they may go first for the more available glens...glenlivet (speyside).....glenfiddich (speyside)...glengrant (speyside)....which involves less peat moss in the processs and therefore less of the iodine taste that an untrained tongue may not appreciate.....

wlecome to the malts

yeah OR. It IS a lot like the ol' tullamore dew though I think a bit more full in the flavor. That reminds me I have to go see a man about a dog.

Mmmmm, Tullamore. Haven't had that for a long time.

New?! Bwahaha, these dudes are from 1963!

And when I'm listening to Bunuel...I only masturbate to Saint-Saëns.

Saw this article, and was wondering if anyone was going to Pakistan anytime!!

http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=oddlyEnoughNews&storyid=2007-01-31T135755Z_01_ISL93568_RTRUKOC_0_US-PAKISTAN-WHISKY.xml&src=rss

Essentially, Pakistan is now releasing a twenty year old single malt whiskey, in a country that is predominantly Muslim, and anti alchol!

The idea of a Pakastani single malt intrigues me. Too bad it's illegal to export!

Chivas Regal, I remember stealing a whole bottle from the kitchen, I mean it was sitting there for AWHILE, I just kept it on my desk but I remember it being a good time. I had like 2 shot glasses hidden in the guitar case and I invited a buddy over to enjoy it with me. I used to pour them in those ginormous cups but I didn't have the throat to handle that shit...

I sampled that at the Bruichladdich tasting a few weeks ago. Can't recall my notes my great stuff and cheap too. I opted to buy the PC7 and the Resurrection.

Still gotta get me a bottle of the Nadurra. Now that's a bottle of 'livet you shouldn't be bashful tugging on.

it's not the year of the 'livet that gets me ashamed, it's the pours from a bottle that's not mine that gets me ashamed.

i'll have to remember to pick up a bottle of Teachers or Powers (whatever's cheaper) next time. possibly even famous grouse. either that, or go dry for awhile. well, awhile longer.
