No one's mentioned much candy.

What do you all like?

Domestic, because they are cheaper than Import

Zours (hard to find in LA)
Sour Skittles (hard to find in LA)
Peanut Chews (anyone know about this?)
Haribo gummy anything (cola, bears, etc)

Import

Chocoball (japan)
Hi Chew Sour apple (japan)
Wine Gums (canada)

I just got a shitload of those gelly candies that make a mess when you lift the foil top off the plastic cup. I think that it was lychee that led the way (at least in Chinese markets), but now you can get it in any flavors...

Is there a difference? Why are they all made from coconut? Some people I know like to freeze them, but I envision that being squeaky or sticky. I like it as is--slimy. Maybe the best part about them is that they are addictive but you don't really get sick from them because it's like eating nothing.

Ok, this is what I've experienced and know about jellys(this is what we call them):

The chinese lychee are the best. There are different flavors, most asian markets seem to be carrying them, that come in the big buckets or are in smaller-purse-carrying-sizes. The flavors other than lychee are yucky. They just taste like jellys with fake flavoring. Then there are jellys that have color added to them. This I find especially weird. They are solid yellow, like the mango. Again, yucky. I prefer the clear. And then there are the japanese versions. These I have found at the japanese markets and these are heart shaped. The flavor is very different from the chinese version, not as sweet and syrupy. I don't think I like them. Now, while in Beijing this summer, a friend handed me a new jelly candy. It comes in a small squeeze tube, kind of like a capri-sun juice drink, and you squeeze the tube and the jelly stuff come out of the top. It's more liquidy than the original jelly and no fruit, but the same flavor. As for freezing them, I don't know, but chilling them is the way to go. And as far as I can figure out, they are all made from the same stuff. Although I wonder about the japanese version. It really does taste different. And finally, I've seen an american version of jellys at Smart and Final. These are totally flavorless and should be avoided! I hope this helps.

I would agree that the Chinese ones are best, but maybe I'm just flying the flag on that one. The tube sounds like something astronauts would eat out of... I wonder if there's a use for the little cups with the foil tops? Like turn them into Christmas tree decorations? Or maybe goggles lenses? I've gone through quite a few through the years.

Another candy I've rediscovered is Almond Roca. Along with White Rabbit and Sugus, my popo (mom's mom) used to have them at her house all the time. My brother, sister, and I would eat the Almond Rocas first. Recently I discovered that you can buy them at Sav-On and just about anywhere, but they've totally gone cheap on the packaging. No more pink metal tins and no more gold foil wrapper. Now it looks like kitty litter findings in a box! Still taste great, though. Last time I made vanilla ice cream I crushed a bunch and put them in.

One more thing about Almond Roca. Are they mostly a West Coast thing? Or mostly an Asian family thing? I went to Indiana and it was an alien concept to some.

I don't know, Martin, I've always thought they looked liked cervical caps, but I'm dating myself. As for Almond Roca, it's great, not an Asian thing, but maybe a West Coast thing. Crumbling over some really rich vanilla ice cream sounds gooood! or over dark chocolate, obviously not over any cheesecake flavored ice cream! and no fruit, except maybe banana.

Martin - Almond rocas are so cool... my mum used to buy it quite a bit when we were in Hong Kong (in the 80's) but when we came to Aust the only place to get it was this dept store David Jones (not unlike Neiman Marcus) - consequently we didn't have it much for a while... of course now there is some revival

i forgot to mention, Lindt chocolates (esp the dark thins) are excellent...

There's the Botan rice candy you can get at Safeway. It comes with a sticker, you take off the outer wrapper and under that is another rice paper wrapper. Throw the whole thing in your mouth and enjoy the melty goodness. Any one else like those super sour Ume boshi plum things? Hella salty.

12-22-2000, 05:30 AM
I had a friend whose Mom loved Almond Roca, but would never eat it, because it only came out at Christmas, and since they were Jehovah Witnesses, She considered it a Christmas thing, and taboo. But when they began marketing it year round, it suddenly became 'OK', and she now always has a bag in the house. People are weird. =Jed

oh boy oh boy oh boy.
nerds - grape/strawberry
lik-m-aid (the sticks are the best)
peanut butter twix
butter rum life savers
those sour apple lollipops with the caramel coating
pocky chocolate
white rabbit
super cola
peach and lichi gummies
yan yan chocolate
and my friend got me these hello kitty hard candies that are really good - fairy kitty
we also have these things at home, it's chocolate in a tube. i dunno the real name but we call them tsonki (which means "joint")

12-27-2000, 04:57 PM
oh where to begin?

gummy bears: preferably from germany, haribo is fantastic
jelly bellies: pear, very cherry, green apple
pez: it's not just candy, it's an activity
chocolate covered coffee beans: chocolate with a kick
sour anything: yum, just yum

there is always more, but those are some top picks. for now.

12-27-2000, 05:06 PM
Used to eat a bunch of those gummy colas, white rabbits, rice candy and heck just about anything. I hate those violet candies and the red hots.

Now I'm on this chocolate craving. When I was in Seattle and Chicago, I went to a bunch of candy stores. There is a lot of chocolate in Seattle. There was even a chocolate factory near one of the outlet malls.

Almond Roca - We had some in the office and when I pulled the plastic lid off, there were the roca's staring at me, without the gold wrap looking like small doo doo chunks. What happened? Do they no longer make them with the foil wrap? Someone please explain.

I recently discovered Taro jellies. They're my favorite jelly now.

Almond Roca gives me nightmares, because people used to gift and re-gift that stuff to us all the time. And it looks like doo-doo to boot.

I have always loved the sugar-coated Black Currant gum drops you buy in sticks at the local Chinese market. I forget the brand. Roundtree or something?

Stick an IV with Haribo factory goop in me and I'm all set.

01-04-2001, 12:51 PM
why no mention of chocolates? I have this intense need for very dark bitter chocolate. I've had Belgian and Swiss chocolates before and there definitely is a difference in the flavor. Once you have one of those, the milk chocolates just seem so blah.

But if this isn't about chocolates, I have to go with the candied plums my parents used to get at the supermarket, or the candied ginger. Stuff was so hot it made me sweat.

01-04-2001, 07:58 PM
Speaking of chocholate, how about those weird Cadbury chocholate bars- Flake, violet crumble, etc.

And I am suprised no one has mentioned Lik-a-stik.

the first time i ate super lemons, in seventh grade when they were REALLY hip, i ate an entire bag in one day and burned off all my taste buds with the citric acid. it really hurt. i still like super lemons though.

but i think botan rice candy, the orange ones with the sticker included, are better.

and i really like lychee jellies, the kind that you get in a big bucket in Chinatown for five bucks. the only entertaining thing i have thought of to do with the cervical cap containers is to stick my tongue in them and look in the mirror. it's really weird looking. i agree that all the other flavors are gross!

and i love japanese gum--i grew up eating the sanrio kind, cola is the best flavor, but i also like the much cheaper and highly overpackaged Marukawa bubble gum in strawberry, melon, and grape (orange isn't so good). it's the kind that comes four balls to a tiny, indivudually plastic-wrapped box, and about ten of those tiny boxes come in a larger, also plastic-wrapped box, and the big box is uaually a dollar. what a deal! and it has that lovely springy texture that japanese gum has and american gum sadly lacks.

it's not exactly candy, but i really like any mochi dessert--mochi balls with red bean filling are yummy, and mochi ice cream is the bomb!

Boston Baked Beans are awesome and always stale . I live in Seattle and every since I was a kid they've always had that staleness but goodness to them. Maybe because they're from Boston so it takes a long time to get it shipped to the west coast. Or maybe they're prejudice against the west coast and purposely send stale Baked Beans. Or maybe I'm putting too much conspiracy thinking into this.

domestic-
Strawberry/banana Starbursts
chocolate covered gummy bears
mini Reese's PB cups (they taste better than the big ones)
Choco Tacos(not really candy)

Here's my japanese list:

Wata-pachi -grape flavored cotton candy with grape pop rocks

Poff- it's mousse chocolate thats freeze dried. Kinda like space ice cream. Little individually wrapped squares that melt in your mouth. This is candy fit for the gods.

Lamune/ramune candy- comes in clear greenish blue dildo shaped container. Small white balls of lamune tart goodness that dissolve in your mouth. Lamune is the japaneses equivalent to 7up but better.

Pet-tara Nanjara!- this candy could only be invented by the japanese. It's a candy making kit that you can get at most grocery stores there and they've come out with a lots of different flavors. It comes with a two parted tray, stirring stick and 3 to 4 mysterious ingredients. You mix ingredients, add water and presto, you have a candy assembly line. The candy you get is nothing special but making it is half the fun. This product is ingenius because the company doesn't have to come up with new candy and they don't even have to make the candy, you do that for them. Best marketing idea for candy ever.

Theirs too much good candy to write about, I'd be here all day.

The staleness is built right in! Every box I've ever opened has tasted that way...

Hey Randroid, you took the words right out of my mouth! "Meltykiss" (esp. dark choc.)is absolutely my fave. Is it just me or is Japanese chocolate way better that anything you can get here?

Boston Baked Beans are the bomb but I was never sure if that slight stale taste was part of the appeal. I bought two packs for $1.00 a few weeks ago and for some reason, didn't stand for the taste that night. In small print, they said they would reimburse me if I wasn't 100% satisfied. I sent them a letter and got back a check for a dollar as well as a coupon for more candy. I was quite happy.

That's right....Cherry Clan...that's messed up. I was going to say it probably died out in the '80's because things are a little more politically correct now, but I think I've actually seen them somewhere lately.

Those botan rice candies are good when they're not stale, but the stickers offend me because they suck. What the hell? Come on, how many stickers with dogs in sweaters do I want? I think I've gotten that one a dozen times now.
Anybody remember when they used to have little toys in them? That was way back when candy bars were 20 cents. *sigh*

In Chinatown NYC, they've got stores called Aji Ichiban that sells bulk candies and lots of dried squid things. It's a bit pricey since it's $10 a pound for the candy, but I love the apple flavored candy that turns into gum when you suck on it long enough. that sounds dirty!

Haribo is awesome! The best are the little gummy bears that come in the tiny packages. Did a web search for them so I could buy them in bulk but they seem to be alluding me.

Just got back from a road trip from LA to SF. On the way up we dropped by the 99 Ranch Market and scored some peach gummies, assorted rice crackers, sweet and salty dried plums, and orange peel. On the way back we went to Target and got Whoppers, Goldfish, and Crunch 'n' Munch.

For staying awake at the wheel, it's hard to beat the plum seeds and orange peel. You know the type I'm talking about--it comes in a heart-shaped clear container and it makes your body shudder and whole face pucker. It's the best and maybe there will be some plum trees miraculously growing on the most desolate parts of I-5.

Those seeds are also handy for sore throats. You might think twice about putting one in your drink, though. See the movie Peace Hotel for more on that...

Any other favorite road candies?

Road candy ...

Anything taffy or gummy.

I'm not a big fan of hard candy .. they bore me.

Chewy stuff makes the trip go faster.

When I was in LA last, we ended up walking around on the outdoor mall thing in santa monica, near the Boardwalk. Anway, in with the shops there was a little candy store, (kind of near the barnes & noble) that had the wildest varity of UK candy.

I guess they supply the ex-pat brits there with their sugar fix. Don't remeber what the place was called though.

But they had all the Cadbury candybars, and the chocolate Smarties, which I have only seen in Canada.

01-24-2001, 09:43 AM
... as far as the Cherry Clan goes, they are still around, but the comapany, Ferrera Pan, has changed all of their old 'fruit' candys to be more PC/marketable like Lemon heads.

So cherry clan is now Cherry Heads, Alexander the Grape is now Grape Heads, etc. They have even introduced a new Orange Heads candy.

So if you see any of the Cherry Clan candy, it has have been on the store shelves for like 5 years. Probably tastes the same too.

Those things are great candy- a pebble of hard sugar surrounded by flavered wax, and then a color coating.

Take a look the archive of merchendising at:
http://www.njin.net/~knapp/FuFrames.htm

The graphic for the "fumanchews" candy is really obnoxious. (Its near the bottom)

i like sour candies... sour gummi worms, sour gummi bears, sour strings, nerds, whatever. botan rice candy is awesome when it's not stale, but the stickers are usually pretty stupid. anyone had those japanese candies in the boxes with really cool toys inside, along with a tiny little bag of crappy gum or candy? those get harder and harder to find these days... i remember i used to be able to get little toy gundams from them. and this one time, i got this one insanely cool rubber band gun sumei-automatic uzi. it was so cool, and the boz turned into a shooting gallery with little miami vice looking badguys. the ones on top you could rig with rubber bands, and if you hit them they'd fly off. that was so fricking cool.

Oh man. I gotta go to Yaohan or Daimaru or 99 store or something. Botan, with the sticky paper inside is the best. And - who got guns? I always got dinky, lame cars.

But the best candy is SUPER LEMON - especially when ya give one to a haole, who never seen one, eh?

What ever happened to Pop Rocks?

Does anyone make home-made candy?

Someone mentioned that British place near Third Street and Santa Monica. It's on Second, but I can't remember the name. I went there for crumpets and stuff once for lunch and it was okay. The best part is definitely the candy. You can get a lot of the Canadian sweets there, like Coffee Crisp, Aeros, and Wine Gum there. No Sour Beaners, though!

One more thing... About Alexander the Grape. Is that a rip-off of Otter Pops or what? If I were to steal an Otter Pop flavor, it would probably be Louie Bloo Raspberry or Pancho Punch. Actually, Strawberry Short Kook had an uncanny shortcake aftertaste if the frozen-ness was just right, and was quite good, too.

hey I know what u're talking about! it's that little shop next to the british pub King's Head Shoppe. i used to go there all the time with friends! we call it king's head snatch for some reason. the fish and chips are really good, and so are the bangers and mash (which is basically a sausage, some mash potatoes and peas). british food isn't that great, but you'd be surprised how much you crave it sometimes after you've tried it.

I don't think anyone's answered your question about the staleness of the Boston Baked Beans.

They be like that 'cause the beans inside (peanuts) be not toasted nor roasted - they are raw. So they squish in you mouth, instead of crunch.

I like them too.

Those beans should be roasted! The oil from the nut probably soaks into the candy coating.

Did you ever hear a story about not freezing them (they are really tasty frozen) because someone choked and died/got brain damaged because it slid down their throat and clogged their windpipe? I always wondered whether that was an urban legend. Asian urban legend, i guess.

Yes way. I think the peenuts is not baked or roasted to prevent the grease infilterating into the candy. If they raw, the peenuts squish and the grease stays inside the nut, maintaining that special texture. You ARE talking about them kine boston baked beans made by the lemon-head people, right? I think they are the same company/onoy company.

There is a "knobbly version" of boston baked beans. You know what I mean? Also red. But somehow not the same. I think they are harder than the real boston baked beans.

it's all about hi-chew red bean and green tea! the flavor is precisely recreated in chewy format. the red bean even has a little beany grained texture added (unless it's just my imagination). A+ for accuracy!

and i love the japanese heart-shaped jellies -- but beware of eating more than 2 in a sitting. they gave me excruciatingly pain along the gastrointestinal tract culminating in the worst case of constipation i've ever experienced. (sorry for TMI)

but i still eat them in moderation -- that's how good they are!

speaking of candies that come with toys, when I visited Toronto i found some egg shaped chocolate candies wrapped in tinfoil. The packaging is entirely in french. It's actually a bit of a rip off coz there is only a thin coating of not-so-good chocolate 'round a plastic easter egg. But inside are kick ass little toys. Dumptrucks, frogs, little freaky people.
i love pocki (or however you spell it.) The best i've had so far are Hello Kitty strawberry flavored. mmmmmm.
I don't know the name but they're little nuggets of chocolate with a cookie like shell. Each one has a koala bear image printed on it....

Just wondering where this store is located! I've been looking all over for Aji Ichiban. It's really hard to find here in California. I guess I'm not looking hard enough. I think Aji Ichiban candies are the best one's I've tasted.

they've got that store in the philippines too - i've got some old, nasty (sticking to the wrapper) candy from when i was there last (xmas 99).
i used to love sanrio candy. i always used to get the little twin stars ones because they came with toys. half the box was candy and the other half was a toy.
yesterday i got pokemon gum. it sucks. it's really small and tastes like sweat.

i loooove candy!!
everthing gummy is good especially kasugari gummy. and the one in the shape of a cheese burger. one time i had this candy it was a cookie with chocolate in the middle and it was shaped like gues what... a cheese burger!
also..sweettarts, lik-m-aid, shock tarts(i cracked a tooth on one once!) and those ufo wafer candies with the spinkles in 'em. and those lychee jellys arebest frozen and white rabbits are cool cuz you can eat the wrappers. flushing, qweens is an awesome place to buy candy! if anybody can tell me about more good stuff let me know!

are they 'Kinder Surprise' ?
the chocolate is pretty crappy, but the toys are quite good~
often buy some for my lil cousin and help her put these toys together..

didnt realise our choc bars were over there now.. violet crumble, flake, etc... but i prefer snickers/twix over the local stuff.. :P (snickers cruncher is my current addiction, absolutely tops!!!)

The best thing about Kinder eggs is the plastic container contained within the chocolate. Kinder eggs used to be really popular in the UK because that container is good for storing small amounts of weed and other narcotics.

I also like the Chinese lychee flavored jelly candy rather than the Japanese heart shaped jellies. They are so good and refreshing when refrigerated. I also like White Rabbits, Japanese shiso flavored hard candies, and this type of Korean taffy like candy called "yut". Pumpkin flavored is the best. I also like preserved plums. The dried salty sweet ones. I hated it the first time I tried it but got used to them thanks to my old college roommate.

I also remember when Botan rice candy used to come with a free toy. I always got a tiny blue race car.

Last year or the year before last I actually did get one stuck in my throat. That sucked. It wasn't frozen though. Honestly, though, I felt like such an ass because I was choking on a lychee jelly. And then it slid down my throat and I didn't even really get to taste it. What a waste.
Most people I know, when I give them one for the first time, really seem to like them. But then there are those who are weirded out by the texture, too bad...

Other yummy candy--
does anyone remember Zotz? They were cherry or grape flavored hard candy, but once you sucked on it enough this fizzy white stuff would come out from the middle. They came on a stick, too. Those were really good but kind of evil, as the holes the fizzy stuff came out of would sometimes cut up your tongue.
Also...
snickers
ferrero rocher
skittles
pop rocks
Botan rice candy (I think ALL the stickers are cool!)

i dunno why i didn't post here sooner. please help me out. i've skimmed thru this thread and no one's made any mention of the "fruit roll" version of haw (NOT to be confused with the circular haw flake disks that come in stumpy wrappers that make em look like fireworks).

my uncle's mother found these so-called fruit roll style haw treats in flushing, NY. they are really short "fruit rolls," that are rolled up so tightly that they look like licorice or beef sticks from afar. they come in a little bundle of maybe 15. i dunno, forgot. it has a red and white wrapper that simply lists the ingredients and is called "snack." that's it - snack! i haven't been able to find these ANYWHERE.

i found a lame version that comes in little plastic tub with a stolen mickey mouse image on it which look different: they're fatter and shorter and wrapped like hard candy. don't want these, want "snack."

can't ask my uncle's mother, as i don't speak chinese, and she's back in texas.

if you've seen this in NY, let me know!!! it's GOOD!

I know what you mean... I bought some discounted Japanese candy today. I bought it because the picture on the package is this wacked out sun with it's eye's poping out and the only english on the front says "Do P-Can". I put one of the candies in my mouth and sucked on it until I got sick and spit it out. Turned the bag around and the ingredients were strange.

suger, corn syrup, peanuts, almond, palm oil, red pepper, mayonnaise!, soy sauce powder, baking powder, amino acid, sucrose fatty acid ester

damn, mayo and soy sauce in candy????

Old baseball gum is nasty! My friend collects cards, I had some mideighties gum last week. It wasn't good back then, and it hasn't aged well!

I used to have another friend, who worked at a comic and card shop, she loved old gum. People would save it for her, and she could care less about what cards would be in an old pack, give her the gum!!

By the way, the gum in Baseball cards today is sugarless, and sealed in a seperate package. Really bums me out. It's soft too. No wonder these damn kids today have no sense of tradition. Until you've chewed up shards of rock hard gum that have stained your favorite players card, what do you know about collecting!?!?!

Here's a candy I just came across recently. I think some of you guys will like these. They are Gorilla Boogers. They are dried and sweetened soybeans.

The only fruit-flavored candies that I like are gummi ones. Especially the ones from Japan shaped like hearts.

We got all our halloween candy on sunday and have broken into it. When did runts get rid of the lime and add pineapple and mango? I swear they lace that stuff in crack it's so addictive.

Happened into a drug store last night and saw rainbow nerds.
Boy do I love a nerd. As long as they're not whatever the purple/pink box (the only one I ever seem to see).
You know you want some nerds.

Ah yeah, drove about 2500 miles over seven days recently. Those things sitting on top of the ice in your ice chest are totally amazing.

Me and the girl were using them as very straight brown moustaches right before we'd eat them.

Saw a pack of Big League Chew the other day. Can't believe they still make it that stuff. When I was a kid I'd chew a big wad of it while sippin' a cherry Slurpee and pretending it was Red Man.
