For something as often discussed on the boards as this movie, I straight up can't believe its never had its own thread (as far as I can tell). Does anyone have the DVD, what extras does it have? I don't know about every else, but I still get stoked when I notice cameos in other movies by Tracey Walter. Why don't more people appreciate this movie?

I used to be crazy about his movie, I went out and bought smiley face buttons and Pine tree air fresheners. We did the sushi line a lot. Buy generic beer. And listen to the soundtrack over and over again. Teh big excitement came when we met Zander Scloss at a Circle Jerks show. He was playing bass guitar. Cool dude and fucking ugly. I don't have the dvd but I should get it and rock and Roll High School too!

An ordinary person spends his life avoiding tense situations. A repoman spends his life getting into tense situations.

I was working at this theatre in sf where the movie premiered.
The movie company spent about 8 dollars on promotion of this film. Their one sheet was on newsprint .
A very drunk Harry Dean Stanton showed up at the premiere and nearly fell off the stage. (Don't mix coke, booze and stairs.)
Del Zamora showed up almost every night to plug the film
and it was through this "grassroots" promotion that made the film take off and get played in other cities.
I didn't really like the film so much the first time but
after having watched parts of this movie every night for about four months it grew on me.

Cool story. Do you remember what the audience reaction was at the time?

Harry Dean Stanton is The Man, man.

As well as the movie "Tapeheads" which starred John Cusack & Tim Robbins with cameos from Fishbone, Don Cornelious (sp?) from Soul Train, one of the dudes from Sam & Dave, Ted "Da Nuge" Nugent & Jello Biafra. Oddly enough, Nesmith bankrolled these films with the heritage from his mom's will. Michael Nesmith's mom invented White-Out. [Paul Harvey]"And now you know...

Random "Repo Man" facts:

* the "Paging Dr. Benway" over the loudspeakers in the hospital is in reference to Wm. Burroughs' "Naked Lunch". Moreover, Alex Cox went on to partially write (or rather co-write, before it was re-written) the script to the film version of "Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas"
* the lounge band in the bar is played by the Circle Jerks.
* Director Alex Cox actually courted product placement for the film. But nobody would give the film one red cent, so Cox decided "well, fuck them! I'm not going to give Miller, Bud, etc. (also characters in the film) any money for free!" And thus the generic products motif was born. Now page 5. True Value hardware..
* the Repo Man code is a version of the Robot code from Issac Asimov's "I, Robot"

Anyone check out the DVD release by now?

About 5 years ago I was going out with a girl whose parents own the liquor store in the hold-up scene in Repo Man. It's in Long beach somewhere... I forget the address. How rad is that?! They used to make her work there after school sometimes and she vaguely remembered the scene shoot.

Also, Harry Dean Stanton used to sing a couple of times each month at The Mint in LA on Pico Blvd. I haven't seen his name on their weekly calendar in the LA Weekly in a long time, but I saw him a few times and it was always great... the first time, oddly enough, he finished singing and as the backup band ended the song, he started talking to me. I was so confused... I was sure he thought I was someone else or maybe he was looking at someone right behind me... but no, he was talking to me and it was too loud to hear so, I got up and walked over to the stage and he said, "Well, how do you think I'm doing tonight?" I was totally baffled but I said, "Great! You're the greatest!" and I put out my hand to shake his. He had a cigarette in one hand, whiskey in teh other and he sorta shuffled both into his left hand and then shook mine.
Weird. But very cool.

Ok, alllllsooooooo... my friend knows Dick Rude- the guy who plays Duke/leader of the little band of punks. He works in construction these days and he's also been working on some scripts.

No argument from me. HDS is way cool.
He's awesome in the movies and in person!
He sings old-timey crooner songs and weepy Mexican ballads! And sometimes he'd climb up on the bar and dance while he sang at the Mint.

If you've been putting off getting it on DVD, you should get it now:

http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=ABD011229

$15.99 (shipped) for the collector's edition (only a buck or so more than the regular version). The collector's edition basically is the same disc as the regular one but comes in a special tin and has a booklet about the film.

Finally got it in the mail.

The collector's edition comes in a tin resembling a license plate. It also includes the soundtrack on CD and a booklet which has what I believe to be the comic strip that was done to help pitch the film.

I only watched the first few minutes but the transfer looks great. Will let you guys know what the commentary is like when I get around to it.

martin

Repo Man is my favorite movie ever. I wish the tin box were a little cooler (maybe a black and yellow CA license plate?) and there was more than a comic in it (tree freshener?), but the commentary by Alex Cox is worth just so you know all the other possible endings they were considering. Anyway, check this GR Transmission for more rambling:

http://giantrobot.com/transmissions/index.html

Also, I got the Straight to Hell DVD a while back. The extra stuff is more like just hanging out and reminiscing, but that's okay. Light, Otto, and a few other Repo alum are in it. I think El Patrullero (sp?) is out on DVD, too. It's part of a three DVD Alex Cox set with Repo Man and his Compass movie... I'm so tempted even though I have Repo Man. I have mixed feelings about Sid & Nancy, although the Joe Strummer song is pretty hot. So is the Ramones one. Actually, I saw Cox present Sid & Nancy at UCLA before the movie came out. He seemed like a cool guy.

The collector's edition also has the soundtrack on a separate CD. Since the collector's edition can be had for only a couple bucks more now, I say it's worth it unless you already own the soundtrack (as pointed out in the article).

Air freshener would have been good. I also though it would be funny if the cover just had the generic label "DVD" with the blue stripes though I guess few people would be able to figure it out if they saw it on the shelf.

Thanks for the link. Reminds me that I should check other parts of the site more often.

I'd love to play a Repo Man videogame done in the Vice City style. Oh that would be the ultimate: being a repo man, voice-overs from Harry Dean Stanton and Co., early 80's hardcore soundtrack,
eating sushi and not paying. *Sigh* someday i hope...*sigh*

well, Rockstar is working on a Warriors game. Honest.

martin
02-07-2003, 02:56 PM
A Repo Man game would be intense. The goal would be to get the Impala. (Is that what it was?) Of course, avoiding the Rodrigo brothers would be part of it. "Goddamn Rodrigo brothers, gypsy dildo punks!"

There were rumors a few years ago about an Otto's Christmas sequel. I'm not sure what happened. Maybe the Untouchables are too expensive to play the scooter gang now?

The Alex Cox DVD collection I saw at Best Buy had 4 flicks for ~$45: Repo Man, Straight To Hell (w/ the documentary Back To Hell), Death And The Compass & Three Businessmen. According to the IMDb, El Patrullero isn't out on DVD yet. And Martin, the Ramones aren't on the "Sid & Nancy" sountrack. We're you thinking of The Circle Jerks? They do a song also called "Love Kills". I've got it on vinyl mostly for the rare Pogues tracks("Hotdogs With Everything!! Fuck you!!"). Which is good because most of it is God-fuckin'-awful.

martin
02-10-2003, 03:36 PM
I have a 12" of "Love Kills" by Joe Strummer. I think "Dum Dum Club" is on the other side. The Ramones also have a song about Sid & Nancy called "Love Kills." Perhaps it wasn't in the movie?

As for the Alex Cox thing, you're probably right about it. I scanned the junk email from Amazon, but didn't read it too carefully. Oops. Did you buy it? I'm curious about Death and the Compass and The Three Businessmen.

What's up with Alex Cox and hotdog songs? There's also that weiner song in "Straight to Hell" by Zander Schloss (sp)...

I saw Repo Man at the Mann Westwood (the small theater to the east) on opening night with about 5 other people in the audience. I thought it was great at the time but never heard much about it again until several years later when it started showing at the Nuart on a double feature with such films as Buckaroo Banzai (which I also saw opening night in the same theater with even fewer people in the audience.) and i got to really revisit the film and enjoy it even more.

I like the before Pulp Fiction comment, however, Repo Man doesn't do a whole lot of movie referencing (over sampling?) that QT does.

That is my 2 cents

A lot of people don't realize what's reallygoing on. They view life as a bunch of unconnected incidences and things. They don't realize that there's this like lattice of coincidence that layers on top of everything. Give you an example, I'll show you what I mean. Suppose you thinking about a plate of shrimp. Suddenly somebody will say like plate or shrimp or plate of shrimp out of the blue no explanation. No point for looking for one either. It's all part of a cosmic unconsciousness.
