Mudhoney - The Rose (its on an old Sub Pop release called Sub Pop 2000 or 200 i think, put out in the early 90's or late 80's.)
Hard To Believe (Kiss Cover Album) on C/Z records - All Seattle grunge bands doing Kiss tunes! Yeah! You can't rock much harder than that.
14 Songs for Greg Sage and The Wipers (Tim/Kerr Records) - 14 great punk/grunge cover tunes of songs by the Wipers. Nirvana, Hole, and Thurston Moore dish out some great songs.
Chairman of the Board - Double Cd set of Sinatra covers by cool indie bands.
The Bridge (A tribute to Neil Young) - Neil Young covers. Fucking A this rocks. The Pixies and Sonic Youth are on this. Wow.
I'm a cover song freak. I buy cover albums left and right. Its always cool to hear someone's interpretation of another tune. Dare i say it, sometimes they're better than the originals.
i like Velvet Underground's "Sweet Jane" done by the Cowboy Junkies.

How about Pat Boone's "The Metal Album" LOL!
I second the Like a Prayer cover by the Rondelles, it just plain rules.
I've been in love with the cover of Steely Dan's Dr. Wu as done by the Minutemen and The Smoking Popes' cover of Stevie Nicks' Leather and Lace for my entire young adulthood. Good times, man, good times.
But the pinnacle of good cover songs is the Gories doing Gimme Some Money by Spinal Tap. It's my most cherished record.

I second the vote for the hendrix version of watchtower. My anti-vote goes to any Bob Marley covers, including the fugees. Dude, why mess with that? The Orgy version of Blue Monday is pretty craptacular as well.

Rocket From the Crypt-that Big Bopper song, you know, "Hellloooo bayyyyby!"

"Phantom of the Opera" by Me First and the Gimme Gimmes (actually, almost ALL their stuff is great)
Elvis' "Viva Las Vegas" by Dead Kennedys
Oasis' "Wonderwall" by Mike Flowers Pops
Sinatra's "My Way" by Sex Pistols
DMB's "Ants Marching" by Da Vinci's Notebook
And to mix it up, here's some rather interesting ones:
Spice Girls' "Wannabe" by Zebrahead
Britney Spears' "Hit Me Baby One More Time" by Mr. Bungle, and another by Travis
"The Mary Tyler Moore Theme" by Time to Waste
The Doors' "Light my Fire" by Zacharias

Recently the Mark Kozelek cover records have been kick ass - you know you're onto something when you can bring both AC/DC and John Denver to the table and make it work. In fact, the John Denver covers record Kozelek put together is great overall -- I guarantee will make you think twice about dissing Mr. Rocky Mountain High. Even if he was on the Muppet Show.
I love the Catpower version of Smog's "Red Apples".
Bedhead doing Joy Division's "Disorder".
Husker Du - "Mary Tyler Moore Show" theme.
Neil Young cover corner:
Low doing "Down by the River"
BTS doing "Cortez the Killer"
Emmy Lou Harris doing "Wrecking Ball"
I'm not going to bring up Dylan. . .
Ok, Byrds doing "You Ain't Going Nowhere". This may be the best Dylan cover of all time.

The Chemical People have done so many great GG Allin and KISS songs (not to mention The Go-Go's, The Hard-Ons, and Tom Jones), but their version of Patti Smith's "Ask The Angels" is easily the greatest cover songs ever. That 7" that came out right before The Right Thing (their third LP with the Beto Hernandez cover) was their turning point.
Others of note:
SNFU - Wild World
Redd Kross - Blow You a Kiss in the Wind
Descendents - Wendy
Dag Nasty - 12XU
Fifteen - Hey Joe
Big Drill Car - Big Shot

Looking forward to this :
'Other Peoples Songs' - the brand new album from Vince Clarke and Andy Bell, due for release in the UK on Mute in February 2003. The album will be simultaneously released in the USA and Canada on Mute North America, and worldwide through Mute's licensees.
The album features a selection of cover versions of the duo's favourite songs and was recorded over the last year with producer Gareth Jones [the co-producer of 'Wild!', 'Erasure' and 'Cowboy'].
The tracklisting has not yet been finalised, but the album is likely to include versions of 'Ave Maria', 'Ebb Tide', 'Solsbury Hill', 'When Will I See You Again', 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling' and a reworking of one Erasure classic. Dave Bascombe [who mixed 'Chorus', parts of 'Erasure' and the recent cover of 'A Little Respect' by Wheatus] has worked on some of the tracks.

this is a tough call - there are SO many great ones... the Kraftwerk talk brings to mind the excellent live recording of Steve Albini singing and playin guitar with Zeni Geva in Osaka, Japan, doing a cover of The Model. Albini loves Kraftwerk, which i think is a testament to his good taste, esp given how his music and most of the bands he produces sound so different.
anyway, just because i always loved these songs and dont want to think about it too long, i will list them as a tie for best cover song:
both are by The Revolting Cocks. the first is a cover of "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" (Rod Stewart) which is too awesome for words... (i even made a song out of their kick drum/bass sample of him, heh). and the second is a cover of Olivia Newton Johns "Physical" - very good as well of course.

i think the best cover of Tainted Love was done by Coil. it is a bit depressing, but hey, that's the song..
i liked JMC, though Melt Banana also did an interesting version of Surfin' USA - i THINK it was them... it's been a while since i heard it.
Jello and Alain (ministry) had their sideproject.. Lard i think it was. they did a cover of the "coming to take me away hehe, coming to take me away haha" bit... and of course, the Dead Kennedys did "Viva Las Vegas!" - that has to be one of the best covers of all time ;)

One of Albini's bands (I think it was Big Black, but maybe Rapeman) released a 7 inch of this way back when. The cover photo was also a takeoff on the cover of The Robots album (red and balck outfits, slicked hair and whatnot).

I vaguely remember the original, know it more as that song Bill Murray song in Lost in Translation...

I've got the Lords of the New Church version of Like a Virgin on a 12" picture disc somewhere...
Here's a question i always wondered:
How do you guys view covers as compared with how hip hop uses staple samples ala U Cant Touch This, I'll Be Missing You?

Depends. If it's a tribute, or an interesting take on the original, then cool. If it's just a matter of capitalizing on a familiar hook, then lame. That is why Puffy sucks.

`I Figured You Out` by Mary Lou Lord
*This was on a promo-only EP, of an Elliot Smith song. I don`t know how many times I`ve used this on mixes!!!
It`s hard to stick with studio recordings, but a good covers record overall would be Cat Power`s....it certainly wouldn`t be Duran Duran or Guns`N`Roses` (the ill-fated `Thank You`, featuring the Led Zepplin crash-ic of the same name by Nick, Simon & Co.--plus the Gunners`final nail in the coffin, post-`Nevermind`, when Nirvana basically finished off bands like GNR in the early 90s)
Or fuck, Frente`s version of New Order`s `Bizarre Love Triangle`, that would be an *exceptional cover version.
Interesting would be the furthest in talking about Tori Amos` bizarre perspective on Eminem`s `Bonny And Clyde`, but her original flipside to first-album single `Crucify`, DOES have a haunting spin on `Smells Like Teen Spirit` that Kurt & Courtney probably could`ve ballroom-danced to.

The Revolting Cocks played a slightly altered version of Dark Entries by Bauhaus the other night. Gibby Haynes does the vocals on the album, but I have not heard the studio version yet.

^Holy freakin Christ....
Dang, and I just had these pants dry cleaned.
I don't know if I mentioned this before, but Ciccone Youth's (Sonic Youth) cover of Madonna's Burning Up is 10X better than the original.
And that time that Bruce Springsteen got on stage to help the Wallflowers out on One Headlight, he so upstaged them that it was pathetic. The difference between a real singer and a bunch of scrawny emo-boys was incredible. It was like he was being backed up by a band of eunuchs.

forgot the name of the movie. it was a semi recent teen movie, but there was a band in there called the Electro Cutes (i think) and they did a cover of an REO Speedwagon song.

Tim McGraw - When The Stars Go Blue
i think Tim's cover is much much better than the original by Ryan Adams.

I can't find that one song ID thread so I'm going to just drop this in here.
I was eating at Noodles and Co. yesterday afternoon and heard a cover of Echo and the Bunnymen's "Killing Moon". It was performed by a woman. Kind of a folky cover. Anyone know who it is?

I was always "meh" on "Darling Nikki".
I mean, yeah, at whatever age I was when "Purple Rain" came out (12-ish) it was all kinds of titillating, but the song never really caught me like some of the others on that album.

Randall, funny you should mention "Computer Blues" because that's probably the other "meh" song for me off that album.
