seeing that wonki just got the Nikon D70, and there are several southern california bots that like to take pictures....

let's have a photo outing one of these days, gather together at some place scenic, take some photos, hang out. i think it would be very neat indeed to view one spot thru the perspective of several photographers. but of course any cameraless bots are welcome to join!

this thread can also be a place for socal bots to share their favorite places to take pictures. :)

Don't wait up for me but I'll be passing thru LA (crossing fingers for a standby flight) June 3rd nighttime thru June 6 morning.

It's not guaranteed I can make the flight out. There are less than 10 standby seats available, but as long as there's 1, I'm on it :)

My latest project is rigging up a wireless remote flash unit. $20 for the light sensor and $100 for a basic flash unit. I'm gonna run by the camera shop tomorrow to test if my pop-up flash can trigger it and get decent photos with it.

Should make some interesting lighting options. And it should work with any camera with a flash.

golivar
05-24-2004, 05:42 PM
do you shoot nikon or canon?

Robocon^^
05-24-2004, 05:47 PM
Minolta 7i. It's not even an SLR, just one of those 5 megapixel prosumer cameras from a few years ago.

golivar
05-24-2004, 05:49 PM
ah. what is the wireless transmitter/receiver that you plan to use?

if you used nikon, i would've suggested the su-4 wireless unit, which is pretty cool.

Robocon^^
05-24-2004, 05:53 PM
I'm not sure yet. The one I was looking at was a little black cube with a light sensor on it. If it sees a flash it'll trigger the unit it's attached to, so it has to be line of sight (not ideal, but I'll see how it goes with the tests)

golivar
05-24-2004, 06:00 PM
i think you're talking about the Wein unit...?

if your camera has a hot shoe, you should check these out. i've heard good things about them, and i was thinking about purchasing it for location portrait work. cheaper than pocket wizards.

I'd be up for it, but my schedule has been kinda crazy lately. Hey, Professor Robocon, how about a new photo assignment in Sketchbook? Us SoCal shutterbugs can maybe tackle the assignment together.

Robocon^^
05-24-2004, 07:59 PM
Hmmm assignments...well I want to take a tour to the inside of the Disney Opera House, but you guys have probably already been in there. And I'm not sure if the tours are open enough for extensive picture taking.

I'll leave the plans up to you guys. Are there any events going on or places you want to shoot?

05-25-2004, 06:45 AM
yaaaaay, so many responses. what kind of things do you guys want to take pictures of? city architecture? beach? mountains? and when shall we do this? i don't mind waiting until early june for honorary socal bot robocon to show up.

the disney symphony hall is pretty amazing from the outside and you can walk up and around its walls... but if you're not into shiny metal, then ou won't have much fun.

I like this :) Frees people from driving duty and everybody can shoot while the scenery changes and lots of people passing by. Should be interesting to compare shots afterwards from each person's perspective.

I just saw a show on the Armory in Pasadena - slightly goofy art installations mixed in with trees and nature things.

Robocon^^
05-25-2004, 07:21 PM
Hmm...tried out the remote flash and it sorta worked, but not with the degree of control I was hoping for. BTW, Minolta sucks for having a proprietary hotshoe.

Next camera will be Nikon or Canon.

let's meet saturday morning at Union Station, if y'all are still up for the metro crawl, since from the Union Station we can choose between all the different lines. also this is within easy walking distance to several photographically worthy things, in case we decide not to take the subway after all...

i looked on the LA metro website, and you can get a daypass fro $3. sounds pretty ideal for our purposes.

if you look here (http://www.experiencela.com/MA.html), there's a list of *themed adventures* to be had via metro. i'm leaning towards contemporary architecture, historic LA, or public art.

so when exactly in the morning is fine with you guys? i'm a fairly early riser, i think anytime after 8 or 9 is good with me.

hi guys, I might be tagging along on this trip. I won't be taking too many photos, but I can sure pose for shots like a cheap whore in a weight room! :D Plus, for once, I can ride the train with people I know.

(Costumed or Nude poses will incur a hefty fee.)

Can you see it now? A series of photos titled 'fmstlr and his subterranean existence' up on the bitches of the next GR art show.

Additional suggestion, have a slide show of all the pictures taken on this trip the next day. I can bring a projector and a laptop if youz got your pictures on a CD.

I vote for lunch at Cole's Pacific Electric Buffet:

At Cole's, business has not changed much since 1908. Back then, it was a double delight: First, lunch at Cole's P.E (Pacific Electric) Buffet at the Red Car Terminal and then, a rollicking ride on one of the cars them- selves. The downstairs restaurant specialized in French Dip Sandwiches, camaraderie, and the city's first Check-Cashing businesses.

Cole's is the oldest continuously operated Restaurant and Bar in the City of Los Angeles. Then and now, Cole's has advertised itself as "The Originator of the French Dip:' In fact, in 1974, after years of unsolicited fact-finding and research by the Los Angeles Historical Society and the State of California, Cole's was designated by the City as Historical Landmark Site #104and State Point of Historical Interest not only for its location but for recognizing Cole's to be the true originator of the French Dip Sandwich.

Philippe's fans beware. Your loyalty will disintegrate! I can't believe more people don't know about this place.

2 hours into the 5 hour flight home a healthy baby boy was born, so the plane had to turn back to LA. How a pregnant woman could get on a plane and deliver a child in 2 hours was a little mind-boggling. Maybe the drop in air pressure :o Fortunately there were doctors on board and several nurses to assist.

Got back to LA 4 hours after leaving and needed to wait for a fresh crew to arrive due to FAA regulations limiting the working hours of crewmembers. 2 hours later they arrived.

Basically a 5 hour flight turned into 11 hours. So I'm kinda feeling meh about putting up pics right now. Here's a piece of tarmac I got to stare at.

Robocon, what did you do to get the color just so? They do that in photo mags, right? Like list camera, ISO, shutter, aperture, and shit. Educate us. :)

Robocon^^
06-09-2004, 04:28 PM
^ lots of playing around in Photoshop. Mainly levels to maximize contrast and biasing the midtones into a richer zone so that the wall stains stood out better. I selectively enhanced the rusty orange color because it adds to the feeling of decay.

Since it was outdoors ISO was set to 100 for less noise. If the scene isn't too wildly lit, I just go with automatic exposure. Aperature is set to what I can get away with given the light situation or whatever's needed to control depth of field.

wonki wonki
06-09-2004, 04:28 PM
Nice job, yam! Looking at the EXIF details, it seems like you're taking all your pictures at ISO100. Don't be afraid to bump it up to get that faster shutter speed or to clamp down on the aperture.

35ft6, I'll defer to Robocon.

I created a duplicate layer and added artificial blur. Then I erased back to the sharper original in the area where the train was.

It's the kind of look that happens when people take pictures of their toy trains indoors with wide open aperatures that throw the near and distant objects out of focus.

Aw, thanks man. It took a fair bit of work. Here's the straight-from-the-camera image:

Getting the final image I wanted would have been A LOT easier had I taken multiple exposures.

I think I try to avoid straight on tunnel shots too much. That one you took came together so well, even without the guy at the bottom. But having him in there just clinches it. And black and white was the right choice.
