Let's avoid people we know, private settings, etc. It's a very broad category, but maybe we can focus it a little bit more after we get something going.

Robocon, that pic is really cool. I like the way it has just a touch of blur. What shutter speed was used? what iso?
I used to want to have as much in focus as possible, but lately I like things more blurred.
Here's my last scanned black and white:

But for those kind of lighting conditions, it defaults to 1/4 sec or 5/8 sec shutter speed and it only shoots 200 ASA. Handheld, no flash, so no way to avoid a fuzzy image (but there is an image stabilizer in the camera which makes a useable image possible). It was one of those museum situations where you're not supposed to be taking pictures, so I just put my back to the wall and squeezed off a quickie. And, yes, key_loser, it was the I Don't Mind if You Forget Me show :) It was touring at the Ashiya Museum of Art near Osaka in Feb '02.

I feel odd taking candid pictures of strangers in public. I think as though they are thinking "what the fuck does this jerkoff think he's doing taking picture of me!?" So, I stick to inanimate objects.

That would certainly work.
One time on Egg: The Arts Show they did a piece on a photographer in NYC that would walk along all nice like, waiting for someone walking towards him. Right when they got close enough. WHAM! shoved the camera right in their face, or really close to them and snapped the picture. He said he had been confronted by people a few times, but had never been seriously hurt.

Candid shots are some of my favorites. But I also feel weird taking candid shots of strangers, especially somewhere like downtown LA. I tried to act like I was aiming at something adjacent, then shifted the camera at the last second. I also bought a short telephoto so I wouldn't have to get as close, but I haven't been able to try it yet.

Great picture. I like the street pics above too. It would be cool if the photographer could add a note on how they took the pic- film/camera type, settings, etc.

I think distributed labor is the key! When I made calendars it was a huge pain and not very successful because I radically underestimated how much time & effort it would take to produce them. Looking back, if I had a team of say 3 elves, we could've cranked out a whole mess in an afternoon or two.
I wonder if we could sew books on a sewing machine? I use strips of newsprint when I'm sewing slippery fabric to stabilize it -- I wonder if I could print out maybe 20 images and sew them in five stacks of four, with the fourth image having an extra-long left margin, then sew the five stacks together? I think that would make these easier to produce -- I'm imaging making these somewhat smaller than 8x5, so you'd get two images per page and could print them out on nice laser paper. Split the cost of paper & printing 5 ways, maybe, and everybody gets 2 books?
