I used to race BMX and freestyle when I lived in Minnesota back in 87' to 91' that was my life and my pride. I still have dreams of doing 360' bunnyhops. I had a diamond back then a GT mach one and then a Free agent and then a an Elf custom made. Back in those days a table-top was hot shit. now its like everyone can at least do a back flip. I used to subscribe to BMX plus back when they used be into promoting the drug-free youth and getting high on jumping over doubles, now its like their stoned doing back flips. I crashed alot during races one time I got knocked and out and was sent to the hospital in an ambulance. it was during the Mongoose tour or something and my friends got me a get well banner from mongoose bikes signed by members of the Mongoose team. Tim "Fuzzy" Hall was one of them. I remember when people thought he was crazy doing 360's over doubles, now its like that guy doing double back flips. Rad was a rad movie. I used to listen to that soundtrack to get me pumped up before races. And then I usually crashed and took people out and made enemies. Those were the days, when you didn't have to fall alone, when you knew you could take someone down with you. I'm gonna stop now

I got it ripped off a couple of years ago. It was loaded with everything. It had those old Redline Three piece cranks, those Powerlite handle bars with the bent ends, Sealed bearing hubs, those Uni plastic seats and of course an Elf frame. The trick was to get the bike as light as possbiil in those days. Mine was pretty light. I also had back pegs so I could give cute girls rides on them. I miss that bike and those days when you were happy riding your bike and that was it. I hope who ever stole my BMX is taking good care of it but I know thats wishful thinking. I wish who ever stole it will burn in hell.
I still want to know how to do a boomarang. I always tried and tried but never could I get it. I could do a tail whip sometimes. I was never that good at the freestyle though. I also have dreams of doing that trick where you get your stand your bike straight up on the back wheel and you put your foot on the back wheel from the inside of the frame and the other foot on the crossbar as you straddle the bike between standing straight up. As you do this you would hop up and down like a pogo stick. I forget the name of that trick.

haha.. you mean a cherry picker.. i never got into that trick.. i know what you mean. in junior high, two friends and myself all got our bikes stolen at once.. 2 of us went inside to get a drink, and the dumbass who was spoze to be watching our bikes came inside to see what was taking us so long! sure enough we go out and all of our bikes got grabbed. dyno slammer, haro master, and a bully. sall, goot tho.. coz i eventually got a new bike, without a bash guard.. i know what you mean about getting bikes light.. most racers are still down for that.. but street riders.. dude, have you picked up one of the newer street bikes.. they're so beefy, you might as well be riding with a bag full of bowling balls.. no wonder the kids i met awhile back were so impressed w/ how high i could jump.. b/c their bikes weigh a few tons! seriously.. yeah, i miss those days too.. but i'm trying to get back into it.. i just need to get my bike up here.. austin was a dope bike scene, i wish i would have rode more while i lived there.. yeah, my bike that i have now is alrite... sealed bearings and all that.. of course compared to bikes these days.. it's a bit behind on standard technology.. stems are different now.. and so are brakes.. everyone now has the v brakes.. before it was dia comp 990s or nippon, pitbulls, or the acs boa (with bearings!)

My boyfriend rides for Volume Bikes here in San Diego, CA.
Sam used to ride for Duffs, a shoe company. If you want, you can check out some of his photos on the website: http://www.sandiegobmx.com. If anyone needs any information about places to ride in San Diego, let me know and I'll ask him about it. =)

Hi, I'm 27 and I just started riding flatland again this past year. It's been about 10 years since I last rode on a regular basis. I try to ride maybe 2-3 times a week. Ralph's Parking lot on Wilshire and Hauser is where I meet up with my favorite underground riders. Bobby Carter and "hollywood" are the regular riders there, very friendly guys so feel free to just show up. There were some dudes from japan (bad ass riders, rode like over 8 hours a day), but they took off back to japan. If anyone wants to go ride, just drop me an email and we'll hook up. I can't believe how much flatland as evolved and how much the bikes have changed. There are some things that I just couldn't let go from the past - I still ride with a coasterbrake hub, kneesaver bars, and hollywood brought a hacksaw one day to cut off the locks on my levers. What ever happened to Mushroom grips and jumbo donuts? I'm riding a Hoffman EP and I can't get used to it, bike is tiny. It's still bigger than the popular tao or quanmen, but damn, times have changed. Half of these guys ride without any brakes, I'm almost ashamed to be carrying Simple Green around with my tools.

haha damn doode! i'm on the same page with you! old school.. freestlyin' magazine, club homeboy, kneesavers, homemade shortened gyro cables, peregrine chrome hp 48's..
i totally feel you on the changes.. if i got a new bike i wouldn't know how tha hell to go about it.. shit, it feels good to know that people are still riding flatland out there.. i'm down with dirt and all, but i have a special place for my flatland days.. me, my bike, a parking lot and walkman.. yo have you picked up a street bike these days? things weigh a ton!
Yeah, those street bikes are pretty hefty! I was thinking of using a street frame to ride flatland since I can't get used to these flatland frames with a 17" top tube. We can talk shop for hours. From 86-91 I rode like 3-8 hours 7 days a week. Back then one bike could do it all - flatland, street, ramp, and even used it for dirt just because. My love is always for flatland, but our huge group of riders would hit grass jumps, bank to walls, even mountain bike trails. I grew up in Torrance,CA, lived pretty close to Wizard publications - BMX Action, Freestylin', Club Homeboy, etc, so back then there were riders everywhere. I even have all my Club Homeboy Tshirts and 'zines. AFA and ABA held contests every other week, exciting times back then. We can talk about parts for hours too, the ACS slant stem, skyway tuffpads, remember those fold down pegs? haha... Shimano DX pedals (still have a set of red ones), steel GT pegs with a cut-seatpost hammered into them, and what da hell were framestands for???. My 88 haro master has framestands built into the bike, as well as the fold downs fork pegs! Have any videos made by Eddie Roman? But these new changes are driving me crazy, different axle sizes, no sweep handlebars, forks and necks that go straight up and down, very very short bars. BUT, gotta love the new bar-ends, thick ass rims, flatland pegs, 160mm cranks, 29T sprocket (I think Mike Loveridge or Randy Tishman ran a 25T back in 86). Keep riding!

Bringing back an old thread... I've been going to more flatland jams on a regular basis. Just went last saturday to a jam hosted by Intrikat (Chad Johnston). Incredible turnout (70 riders+)including old school guys and supporters - Ron McCoy, Derrick Orrie, Jeff Cotter's parents and brother haha, Ephraim Catlow, Sean McKinney, handful from the east coast. I was wondering if there are any BMX guys in here?

i used to ride in junior high and the first couple years of hs. mainly flatland and dumb street stuff like trying to jump down stairways in downtown boston or doing fakies on trees.
i gave it up once the rolling tricks got super difficult. i couldn't keep up with it. some of the stuff they do now is insane, totally mindblowing. i had two sweet haro masters, the first one was a black one that the airlines lost, then i got a badass coral one. it's still in my basement. it feels huge compared to the small bikes they ride nowadays.
i remember derrick orrie and jeff cotter, those guys were good. they must be in their mid 30s by now.
i tried doing a rolling tailwhip ("whiplash"...?) a couple years ago on this kid's bike and almost killed myself.

wow. such great memories. i was into freestyle/flatland back in jr high. but i got drawn towards skatboarding by the time i hit high school.
i'm tempted to give it another try and pick up a bike for some street riding. but i'll have to wait till i get a job first. :p

i think i posted this in some other bike thread but i finished restoring my old kuwahara early this year
http://www.rewind-records.com/kuwa.jpg
just helped my friend build an old nickle-plated mongoose.
we ride around the city at night scoping out good spots. we've hidden sheets of plywood around various places so we can bust them out to make wall ramps against buildings.
i tried to jump a 4 ft mound of loose rocks and dirt at a construction site not long ago.
luckily the beer i drank cushioned my fall, though there are still pebbles embedded in my hand...
