cypress hill, the red album. what the hell is it called?
eminem - slim shady
tribe called quest - the low end theory
digable planets - reachin' (a new refutation of time and space), my favorite chill album ever
kool moe dee - knowledge is king - i know this is before 1990 but i have to mention it as my first ever rap album purchased :P
the red one was self titled. the best thing about kool moe dee was his fucked up fake oakley blades. very borderline ultimate 5 if he wasnt old school.

Main Source - Breaking Atoms
Public Enemy - Fear Of A Black Planet
Dr. Dre - The Chronic
Mos Def & Talib Kweli - Presents Black Star
Notorious BIG - Ready To Die
Don't even get me started on singles...
no shit. I had to keep it general cuz something else would pop back into my head and make me want to modify the whole thread.

the geto boys album had the best lines esp. gangsta of love'turned me over on my back gold(?) opened up my buttcheeks and started licking out my asshole' they were ahead of their time getting their salads tossed back in the day. I didnt know Gold was a slang word. They would strain sometimes to make shit rhyme. Willie D did that shit a lot. I still use their lyrics in conversation to this day like 'that kicks more ass than a donkey' or if I'm gonna fight I'll say 'I'ma kick your monkey azz through the goalposts of hell'

what, no j5? i'm hurt, y'all.
i'm a recent re-convert to hip-hop, so i've missed out on everything past 1991 yet before this past august or so.
wu-who? <g>
this mos def character, however, is mad interesting. And has anybody here heard of thirstin howl? A friend some me some mp3s that are just wild- funny and intelligent and drool-filled.
j5's tight. thirstin howl just came out with some new shit. hip-hop was consistently good until about 94-95. Now most of the good shits underground. Fatbeats.com definately will bring you back to speed. There's so many resources now. Hip hop now is like metal in the late eighties. The r&b rap sounding shit is the equivolent to warrant or xtreme.
you'll also notice a generation gap; besides the emineminy assclowns you'll notice the cheesy skate gangstas or the indie rock shithead thats been down since 95 thinking that they're old school. you know as soon as they graduate, or drop out, of college they'll be embarrassed to admit that they listened to hip hop. I see these fuckheads everywhere.
I'm getting wayy bitter thinking about it so I'll stop right here. you should read 'something for you raggety hoes' in the magazine 'Lifesucksdie' They definately hit that shit right on the head.
Specific order:
1. Deltron 3030
2. Beastie Boys-Paul's Boutique
3. Tribe Called Quest-Midnight Marauders
4. Outkast-Aquemini
5. Mos Def & Telib Kwali present Blackstar
Big ups to akuma for knowing Deltron. It may be the best rap album of all time...if you haven't heard it, buy it, hear it, then debate me.

fuck I knew you were cool. My first hip hop show was stet,p.e,ice t and epmd. Bobby jimmy did 'roaches' in between epmd and stetsasonic. too hype came out with a follow up which was wack as hell. I remember seeing it used a while back so I listened to it and bummed the fuck out.
I need or somebody needs to make a thread of best hip hop albums from the 80's. Big Daddy Kane-long live the kane would definately have to be my top record.

Seems like the same shit pops up over and over. Just lends credence to the notion that HipHop is largely singles driven and there aren't that many albums that stand the test of time (or become instant classics like Deltron). I'd wager if you did this same list with rock (punk or otherwise) you'd get a lot more variety in choices.

Kill My Landlord was their first and that was rereleased a few years ago. Genocide and Juice was their second, but unfortunately it has not been rereleased. That album has some funny stuff on there, like one song where they pretend to be at some rich white folks party and take on the identities of John D. Rockerfeller(sp)and Donald Trump and someone else. They start bustin rhymes about being rich white bastards, hella funny.

I have a hard time dealing with the idea of some people being on the top 5 of the decade list. I am not trying to say that other people's choices are not good, they just seem a little (searching for right word) commercial. A few quick examples:
Eminem: If you want to hear a real white rapper, listen to MC Paul Barman.
36 Chambers: I own this, and it is pretty good, but it seems like the only real good parts involve Method Man.
Again, I am not saying anything negative, people have different preferences. I was just listing my disputes...

i agree wit you man, but then again i dont. i dont like eminem either BUT, i dont think paul barman is that great either. im not really down with that artsy hip hop, well i guess i am but paul barman takes it to another level. and his voice is wiggity wack. i say if you wanna hear a real white rapper listen to wither 3rd bass, and el-p from co flo.
36 chambers only parts were good were with meth? haha naw mane, this album can topple alot of records out there. commercial and underground included.

I use to spin that track long ago, I think i still have the One inch punch single version, there have been so many remix's of that song though. I use to think it was cool but now it sounds kinda dated and cheesy to me. In actuality the main reason I picked up the track was cause of all the burroughs references.

Fear of a Black Planet definitely is way more pop friendly than Millions, but Millions was were that gritty siren sound originated.

Black Planet was 1990.
In my opinion, one of the most overrated albums ever. I used to be the hugest P.E. follower and I felt like Black Planet was their first step on that long hill down. I think it was because of all the unnecessary filler and the redundence from past records. A theme that continues to this very day. Argue with me if you must, be it took a lot for them to fall from grace in my eyes back then.
My top five, off the top of my head:
Wu Tang--36 Chambers
GZA--Liquid Swords
KMD--Mr. Hood
DJ Shadow--Endtroducing...
Dr. Dre--The Chronic
I'll probably revise this when I glance over my cd collection later.

company flow - funcrusher plus - huge underground album
dr dre - the chronic - i guess ill give it to dre he had a good run
nas - illmatic - greatest hiphop album ever and i dont really like almost anything nas has done since
a tribe called quest - midnight marauders - this is their best album in my opinion and one of my favorite albums ever
wu tang - right now i might like the first gravediggaz album more but this one was huge and influential at the time
but i dont know if you can sum up 10 years in 5 albums plus stuff that was popular in early 90's was dead by the late 90's. in my choices i almost ignored westcoast and i had no southern albums i think people that picked shadow's entroducing is a good choice because instrumental hiphop has jumped off after that.

I'm a huge fan of that album too. I remember rediscovering that one in my collection a while back and having it on in my CD player for about 3 weeks straight.

Souls of Mischief - 93 Til Infinity was mentioned just once in 5 pages of this thread. It deserces another mention.
Cypress Hill's self-titled joint was dope too.

its really a great album that i think gets overlooked. even when it dropped it didnt get the respect i think it deserves people were kinda thrown off by the "horrorcore" style. but you had beats by rza and prince paul and i liked the raps too. the other gravediggaz stuff isnt that strong though.

souls of mischief was influential, but how about the O.G.s of stylin over beats, Freestyle Fellowship. I think I saw Aceyalone once, and I mentioned Freestyle Fellowship once, but damn, wtf.

An outkast album needs to be on this list, it's just a question of which outkast album you want to pick.
The miseducation of L Boogie- Lauryn Hill
Mos Def- Black on Both Sides
Outside of these choices, the rest is tough to decide.
I just finished re-tagging my Hip-Hop folder last night (& into this this morning, man, fuck guest stars). These are my top most played of that era (not being critical):
- Wu-Tang - 36 Chambers
- PE - Fear of a Black Planet
- Tribe - Midnight Marauders
- Digables - Reachin'
- Beasties - Ill Communication
- Fugees - The Score
- Roots - Do You Want More?
- DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
- KRS-One - Return of the Boom Bap
- Jeru - Wrath of the Math
- Digital Underground - Sex Packets
and for reasons I can't explain:
- PM Dawn - The Bliss Album
I couldn't do 5.

Who said "Paul's Boutique?" Or was it edited out?
What the? Maybe FDM means Paul's Boutique is better than Ill Comunication, but I didn't get it until later, so I haven't played it as much.
my bad my bad.....thought jim listed paul's boutique.
but yes, for the record, paul's boutique was better than ill communication.
but if they decided to "ill communication + check your head - filler tracks", that would most definitely be one of the best hip-hop albums of the 90's.
I might have played Check Your Head more than both if I hadn't lost my copy, but Paul's Boutique is the obvious critical choice, yeah.
I need to make a Beastie mixtape.
I wonder how most people's top 10 GOAT vs. top 10 most played would look?
There's some stuff I listen to shit out of it that I don't even consider "good".
Beasties peeked with Paul's Boutique. Check Your Head would have been decent if they had gotten rid of the last 3/4 of it. Ill Communication I hated when I first heard it, but rediscovered it about ten years ago and really like now.
Beasties have this tendency to drop a record that I love on first listen, and then ages really poorly. I'm just now coming to the realization that To The 5 Borroughs isn't all that. I'm not asking them to go back to Paul's Boutique territory, because that record screams Summer of 89 to me. Same with 3 Feet High & Rising.
5 Boroughs was the first serious downturn for me, not bad but I haven't listened to it much. I really loved Hello Nasty.
But I imagine the Beasties sitting around smokin up planning a record and they come up with all these crazy ideas. This is a good way to plan a record for anybody, but they actually USE every crazy idea.
The thing I do like about Burroughs is that it's the first time in a long time they weren't all over the place with filler and funk and shit. It was straight up hiphop, which is good. It's just not that great at the end of the day.
Not that I want them to revert back to their early hiphop career, but I would like to see what they would come up with if put back in the studio with Rick Rubin today.

I thought they were just fucking around when they said they wanted to mutt dog show to be one of their opening acts
so when I saw Beasties here in sf last year
sure enough - MUTT DOG SHOW
poor Talib Kweli - having to follow that!
it was some funny shit though
Paul's Boutique/Check Your Head - it's a REAL close call for me!
^ they brought the dog act when they came here last year.
it was.....strange.

All of outkast's albums are good, but I think the best 2 were Aquemini and Southern Playalistic.
I almost forgot about the first two Pharcyde records. Both excellent.
I think it speaks mad volumes to Outkast that people have listed i think each of their albums from the 90s and that it doesnt even include Stankonia and TLB/SB. I think thats what makes them the GOAT in themselves and that they also already had the whole back-pack and benz crowd going at the same time before people started mentioning that about kanye...
Not too many hip hop acts get better, esp. when they come out with strong shit to start off with. How many are there at all? Some of held consitency (Tribe, de la, jigga, ) but did they really ever top themselves? Beasite may not have topped themselves each time but kept putting out good and different stuff. Kanye's probably the only one who has the potential to do that right now (in the states?).
The brit mcs will keep things interesting with the Streets III, MIA II, etc though.
Does the Wu-Tang have another great album in them? I still think Meth is one of the dopest mcs out there....

Professor X of X-Clan Dies
By Houston Williams
Date: 3/17/2006 7:15 pm
Professor X of X-Clan has died in a New York-area hospital after a bout with meningitis, sources close to the situation told AllHipHop.com.
As a member of X-Clan, Professor X gained notoriety for his catch phrases "Vainglorious" and dissed fools by calling them "sissies."
Additionally, Professor X, whose real name was Lumumba Carson, was the son of the late Civil Rights pioneer Sonny Carson, who produced The Education of Sonny Carson.
He also founded the grassroots organization BlackWatch.
Meningitis is a byproduct of bacterial or viral infections that overcome the body's natural immune system.
The aggressive entities can be transmitted from other people through sneezing, coughing, kissing, infected blood, or contaminated water or food.
In August 2004, Professor X, auctioned off his time on eBay for a night on the town in New York City.
X-Clan released a pair of critically acclaimed albums, To the East, Blackwards (1990) and Xodus (1992), but soon after the Brooklyn-based collective disbanded.
In December 2005, X-Clan announced a comeback, but it was unclear if Professor X was party to the reunion. In 1995, X-Clan group member Sugar Shaft died from complications related to the AIDS virus.
Funeral arrangements haven’t been announced.
I thought that said "Professor Griff" at first. Dammit.
I had the Professor Griff solo album. He gives a shout out to Bill Cosby and Mao Tse Tung in the same breath. And that was the best song.
But anyway, X-Clan. I feel like a tool only buying somebody's records after they just died, but now I'm gonna have to.
