We actually have a wooden clock coming to GR2 soon.... They're super cool. I can't wait until the come in.

We also have three of these left in stock at GR2.... a rare HUGA item that I would get if I wasn't madly in love with my Queen Bee wallet:

Hmm. Well, I don't think the bespoke tonearm market is contributing significantly to deforestation. Maybe Herr Schroeder can start combing the beaches for driftwood for his tonearms?

The rest of that tree probably went to make $200 pens.

I have the same problem with shows like 'The New Yankee Workshop.' Every time old Norm makes a cheesy sideboard out of Cherry or Walnut, I cringe. I picture thousands of fat guys in garages all over the nation making a run for their local lumberyard.

Some beautiful woods are so rare that poachers sneak into peoples yards at night and steal them.

I will say though that Norm occasionally uses recycled lumber for his projects.

disclaimer: I'm a trained violin and cello maker, so I still hate to see good wood wasted.

SDP, what do think of this recipe?

The wood for the violin must be well dried, mature, and above all, grained. Clear wood is not ideal. For about an hour, place the top of the violin and the sound post into hot, liquid honey to which you have added a few spoons of fish oil. Mix well and make sure the wood does not warp. Every day for six days, you brush the inside of the top with the hot mixture, using a soft brush, but always scrape off the previous layer first. The bottom of the violin, as well as the ribs, is treated likewise, but with hot turpentine. Following the last application (let rest for 24 hours), scrape off the last layer, scrub with a soft wool cloth, and rub in goose lard. Let rest for two days, then scrub the wood dry and steam it. Build the body of the violin and hang up in fresh air for two days. Now complete the violin. For the varnish use a mixture of Dragon's Blood (2/3), Elemi resin and Amber with olive oil. Mix well and brush on hot.

NC State Students To Build Wood Supercar

We've been tossing around the idea of wood cars for a while, but not until now has an ambitious group really wanted to test the limits of wood by creating a performance car out of cellulose products derived from trees. Joe Harmon and his NC State comrades have developed and begun the initial phases of production of the appropriately named "Splinter," a wood car capable of--hang on to your pine cones--240 mph.

I miss the woodwork in my last apartment. I lived on the first floor of this huge house built in 1887, and it had the most amazing woodworking detail.

http://www.oldwestendtoledo.com/oldpics/hiett.jpg

Here's a period photo. shawgirl and 35ft6 will attest it looked a heck of a lot creepier. I'll have to post a pic of my Art Deco mantle and tiles when I get home.

that building has seen some... life since then. It is a bit creepy but still beautiful and the inside is absolutely gorgeous and it was 'decorated' to perfection. I really miss it. I see it every once in a while and get a nice feeling.

"Wooden Sci-Fi Sculptures Make Great Geek Art
By Jenna Wortham Write to the Author
08.04.08

At first glance, this sculpture, cheekily titled A Prosthetic Suit For Stephen Hawking with Japanese Steel, might seem to be mocking the world-renowned theoretical physicist. But Rea, always a fan of Hawking's appearances on The Simspons and Futurama, decided to build the mecha-robotic body suit to honor the scientist's achievements. The 300-pound suit stands eight feet tall and is interactive -- there's a hatch in the back wide enough for a willing participant to crawl in through. '
