Has anyone talked about this band yet?
I cant believe how amazing they are. Has anyone peeped out the 'Reach the Rock' soundtrack produced by Jim Mc Intyre?

Yes, thats pretty good, the movie is pretty decent to. I like the Dianogah track on that. There is something about Dianogah that seems really simple but soothing.

i mentioned 'Arches and Aisles' because John McEntire and Sam Prekop of the Sea and Cake both worked with Gates on this album. listen to 'Kid in Candy' and 'Reach v. Speed' on Arches and Aisles.. this is one of my fav albums

Right on. I need to hear it cuz that connection sounds as awkward as Kool Keith and Ice T but is cool at the same time.

If you like TSAC, you should definitely check out Sam Prekop's solo album. That stuff is great, too.

I have all of The Sea and Cake's CDs. The Japanese release of "Oui" had two bonus tracks on it that are some of the best TSAC stuff done yet.

Saw them on their tour this past fall, too. Those guys were amazing live.

i would have to say that the sea and cake and spiritualized are two of my favorite bands. i wasn't so into Oui, especially after such a strong solo record from Prekop. how are Archer's solo records? the new spiritualized record is amazing. did sea and cake actually tour for Oui? i must have missed them...

They toured for that album but they mostly played old stuff. Archer Prewitt was in a band called The Cocktails when he went to the art institute in Kansas City. Oui was the shit. You have to listen to it more.

The Sam Prekop solo CD is great as well. Jim O'Rourke up to his usual tricks. So is the Archer Prewitt solo stuff.

Did any of you see Town and Country open up on the Oui tour? They are beautiful! I've spent hours just trying to figure out their time signatures. One step furthur down this tangent is Central Falls - Ben Vida of T&C's brother, members of Pullman, acoustic, city-rustic, phenomenal! Highly recommended.

Sam Prekop's solo CD is beautiful. Jim O'Rourke's latest album, "Insignificance", is great, too.

I was sort of underwhelmed by T&C when they opened for TSAC. Which is a bummer since i have and like their albums. For me, I thought that their material didn't quite work in a "playing live in a bar" setting... Maybe in some other venue, it would have been better.

i learned about The Sea and Cake back in February while i was up in Chicago visiting The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. i met these two really quirky girls, one from upstate NY and another one from Ann Arbor Michigan. we all walked around downtown Chicago during the day and night. The girl from Ann Arbor and i had green tea in a coffe shop. she had me listen to some music. The Sea and Cake. i am in great debt to her.

i have The Biz

loving prekop and tsac is easy... and apparently now painless -- was floored to hear prekop's "a cloud to the back" in a tylenol commercial! mixed feelings, but glad that he's getting paid!

i can't believe how many people are FINALLY getting into this band. . . it's so great to see them getting props. i first bought Nassau years ago on a breezy, warm summer evening in DC and as we hit the highway with the windows down to head south, "Parasol" began to play. it's one of my favorite memories of all times. . .

Sorry, they must have removed the post completely. there is a post called "Archer Prewitt's Comics" halfway down where we snuck in some sea and cake discussion just to be rebels. It's mildly funny if youre really bored, and youre a big Sea and Cake fan.

Damn! The show scheduled for Minneapolis is cancelled (as far as I know) because the venue they were to perform in closed the other day due to a fire caused by some fucking stupid band that had a pyrotechnics display.

shane
02-20-2003, 10:29 AM
Haha. Don't blasphem pyrotechnics! Sometimes it's all a band's got going for it.

For my money, I'll take watching a band set themselves and a the venue ablaze over Sea and Cake live... and I love watching those old farts play!

Mpls. show is moved to First Ave. for the same night (3/5).

There's talk on the band's website forums of a new CD available at the shows. Rumor is that it contains all the bonus tracks from the Japanese releases of their albums.

OK. I saw The Sea and Cake last night. Callifone were supporting.

They were great. They played a few songs off of "One Bedroom", "Oui", and "The Fawn". They also played "Parasol".

It was the 4, plus Max(?) on keyboard.

As for goodies, they had a new EP ("Glass"), two t-shirts (grey with an octopus and black with a bicycle drawing), plus all of their past releases on CD and vinyl.

The "Glass" EP:

1. To the Author (Version 1)
2. To the Author (Version 2)
3. Traditional Wax Coin
4. An Echo In
5. Tea and Cake (mix by stereolab)
6. Interiors (broadcast remix)
7. Hotel Tell (C's Mix)

Interesting note, the "C" in "C's Mix" is Carl Craig.

Edit: OK. According to the official TSAC posting in the forums at http://www.theseaandcake.com, it's 4 new songs (first 4), then 3 remixes. The track "Tea and Cake" mix by Stereolab is a remix of "Hotel Tell"

You are stoked!

Serious logistical question:
Did you arrive before the first band and if so, how long do you think it was from the beginning of the show until Sea and Cake were finally set up to play?

I'm asking this cuz me and YK are going to this show but we found out after we got tickets to the Warriors game with M1, Zaius, Den, Deviated etc. Were going to go to both so I was going to gauge our departure on your testimony.

I cant wait to hear that e.p.

joetron2030
03-06-2003, 11:01 AM
I suppose it varies by venue.

But, let's see...

Tickets said doors were at 6pm. I got to the venue around 6:45 or so. Callifone were scheduled to start at 7p. But, I don't think they started until about 7:15. They probably played for about 45 minutes.

TSAC were scheduled to start at 8. But, they probably didn't start until 8:20 or 8:30.

From what I've seen, the way they set up at this particular bar is to usually leave the headliner's equipment set up (but pushed to the back) and then set up the supporting act's equipment in front. Once the supporting act is done and clears their equipment, the stage folk come out and rearrange everything for the headliner. Sometimes, one last, quick soundcheck (for stage monitors) and then they're usually a go from there.

I'll tell you one thing, I was home by 10:15 and damned happy about it! I'm getting over a cold, you know! :)

joetron2030
03-06-2003, 11:04 AM
Also, I'm not sure if Callifone is doing support for the entire tour or just part of it. You can check at the band's official website for a tour itinerary.

I think half the fun of seeing these guys live is watching McEntire on the drums. That man ROCKS!

Dave Grubbs and Jim O'Rourke produced this album, which Sam Prekop sings one of the tracks on. It(the album) is really great in a way that I can't describe.

So, because of this discussion, I listened to the new album last night while I was doing other stuff...

It's a good album. It's a departure from what they had been doing mainly because of the lack of (or reduced presence of) keyboards/synths. It's taking some getting used to, but I'm enjoying it.

Pitchfork had one track for download recently. Don't go expecting what you'd normally expect from Stones Throw.

I'd like to hear it, too, though. mainly because I'm still a fan of Tortoise. in fact, they're playing in town at the end of this month. I'm tempted to catch them again.

I wasn't feeling it at all. I haven't listened to their new one yet but I hope it's good!
