I've had it for a couple months now, and it rocks. I've been listening to it a lot.
Billy Corgan and the guy from Primal Scream have cameos on the CD.
It's definitely not as good as the old school New Order, but it's definitely good to hear these kids again.

oh shit, i remember back when i was like 7 and that video with those doods wearing those costumes that were shapes, and they were like dancing. and there was this guy that kept trying to stack these shapes but couldnt do it, and there were guys jumping in unison and dancing. haha that video was dope. i think the song was "true faith".
new wave bands in the 80's were crazy...

I didn't know about this either. But I gotta admit that I bought the last record in a fit of nostalgia and got burned which maked me wary. The single off thst album was great, but the rest of it I thought was pretty lame. And I only liked about half of Technique. And I'm no fan of Billy Corgan. I'll have to wait and see.

yea, you peeps should read that article.. its quite interesting.. new order actually met billy when he was 15 back in the day.. the article also talks about the whole new order drug scene with their diff albums.. there's also mention of some joy division days..

the new album is much more rockier than any of their past albums. lots of fuzz guitars. if you're looking for something similiar to "Power Corruption, Lies" or "Technique", think you'll be disappointed.
BUT it is a good album. the first 3 songs ROCKED.

Which is probably why they have a fake band playing in their new video on mtv2.

The new stuff is pretty cool. I did a couple remixes for a contest they sponsored, remixing 'Crystal'. That was a fun song to play with. But i miss the old school. I had Substance on album (4 of them if i remember correctly). I played those damn things out.
As for them getting old and fat and dressing terribly - eh, most old rockers are. Cuz you know, they're old. The guys in New Order are about my dad's age or so. I can't imagine my dad making innovative electronica.

in that interview they said that the song that they were happiest with was 'atmosphere', which is a beautiful song.

this new box set sounds like marketing bs to me... mb not ;) who nows.. i'd rather have a "box set" with all versions of all songs officially recorded. but that's just me.
i think the first album has to be the best - Movement. the Peel Sessions are really good as probably number two. after that there are a lot of odds and ends, singles, blue monday/the beach or that 3\5\8 or whatever long trancey video single thing - that was cool.. after that prob the mid-period albums (power, corruption, & lies, etc), followed by the late-mid-albums like brotherhood, then basically a bunch of shit with the occaisional nice song - just my humble opinion! everyone has his own strong one on this i am sure..

REGRET
Maybe I've forgotten the name and the address
Of everyone I've ever known
It's nothing I regret
Save it for another day
It's the school exam and the kids have run away
I would like a place I could call my own
Have a conversation on the telephone
Wake up every day that would be a start
I would not complain of my wounded heart
I was upset you see
Almost all the time
You used to be a stranger
Now you are mine
I wouldn't even trust you
I've not got much to give
We're dealing in the limits
And we don't know who with
You may think that I'm out of hand
That I'm naive, I'll understand
On this occasion, it's not true
Look at me, I'm not you
I would like a place I could call my own
Have a conversation on the telephone
Wake up every day that would be a start
I would not complain of my wounded heart
I was a short fuse
Burning all the time
You were a complete stranger
Now you are mine
I would like a place I could call my own
Have a conversation on the telephone
Wake up every day that would be a start
I would not complain about my wounded heart
Just wait till tomorrow
I guess that's what they all say
Just before they fall apart
New Order has been my all time favorite band since I first heard Bizarre Love Triangle on a 2nd generation dubbed cassette in 1987. I met one of my best friends in high school when he spotted my Substance cassette on my desk. In art school, I'd learn that graphic design superstar Peter Saville started out with Factory. Definitely the most favored and possibly the most influential piece of music I have listened to.

I love them. Who care if lyrics for songs like 'Regret' aren't super intellectual?
Personally, I LOVE them far more than Joy Division. Anybody who claims JD as superior are either brainwashed music snobs--or actually listen to them *that much--should commit suicide.
And become born-again fans of New Order. They're WAY better.
Ever listen to 'Ceremony', a song like that still stands! Every time I *think of my favorite album ('Technique'), the tides of my favorite musical moments wave and engulf anything else I'm into at the moment.
People should buy their proper records, and trade in their comps...although it's quite handy.

Techincally, it's a New Order song, as well:
http://www.worldinmotion.net/neworder/discography/singles/1981/ceremony.htm
I just like their version better.
...But you're right, aside from that song, that first record ('The Movement') was still steeped in their previous incarnation. I was so disappointed when I bought the re-issue of 'The Movement' (Around ten years ago), and it sounded like it fell outta the toilet and Peter Hook was singing (wasn't that him on leads in 'Dreams Never End'?) like he was being strangled to death. Now isn't that a worse thing, sounding like the past--as opposed to making some of the most innovative music to come?
Fair enough, I'm an asshole about the fact that New Order are better--but obviously they were a better band after they 'lost' their singer. Obviously I bear no sentimentality for the wonderful Joy Division...it's just that I much prefer what they did afterwards.

That singer for them sounds just like Barney, right? It takes a retarded person to know one...
The last Monaco record was great. Maybe because it was over twenty-five years ago that Joy Divison made records, and it's hard to relate to the *pain that Ian Curtis suffered, as opposed to Peter Hook's--being jilted for a better part of the decade between 'Republic' and 'Get Ready'.
JD gets mythologized all the time, and if anybody remembers my rant against The Cure....all that crap is gaining high time and momentum for dusting off by the latest generation. I consider them really good to look into, but every step along the way something gets skewed or distorted.
Being twenty-five and jaded might have something to do with it, but at least I take the time to explain myself on these posts. As opposed to somebody obviously following up with quick retorts and just concerned about keeping time.

808 State were really good, too. 'Mind Bomb' was one of my favorites, and a lot of the Madchester/Rave-era stuff from the late 80s/early 90s had a big impact on me.
Maybe If I was forty-four years old and went to college during the era of Joy Division, it'd be easier to side with the era of A Certain Ratio, The Names, Chameleons or whatevers.

New Order Sings For The 'Sirens'
Veteran British rock act New Order will return this spring with a new album, "Waiting for the Sirens Call," according to its official Web site. The set is due March 28 in the U.K. via Warner Music, with the single "Krafty" arriving two weeks earlier.
"Waiting for the Sirens" will be released in North America via Reprise on a date to be announced.
Produced by Tore Johansson and John Leckie, "Waiting for the Sirens Call" will also feature the tracks "Jetstream" and "Sugarcane." The new set heralds a personnel change in the New Order lineup, with guitarist Phil Cunningham stepping in as a full-time member and keyboardist Gillian Gilbert exiting.
Gilbert skipped the 2001 tour in support of New Order's last album, "Get Ready," to care for her daughter by drummer Stephen Morris. Cunningham was on hand for that trek and previously played with New Order frontman Bernard Sumner in Electronic.
As previously reported, Sumner and bassist Peter Hook guest on the track "Real Thing," from Gwen Stefani's recent Interscope solo debut, "Love, Angel, Music, Baby."
In related news, a film based on the life of late Joy Division vocalist Ian Curtis will be directed by famed photographer Anton Corbijn, according to the BBC. "Touching From a Distance," which shares its name with a 1995 book written by Curtis' widow, will be executive produced by Factory Records founder Tony Wilson.
Curtis committed suicide in 1980 at the age of 23 prior to a planed American tour. His surviving bandmates went on to form New Order.

some of the live recordings that i've heard sounded pretty bad. really bad off key singing. (i think that's why i never bothered to see them live even though i *love* the band.) but i've heard other live recordings that were decent.
also, they don't seem to have a great stage presence.

Oh my. At least Barney doesn't lip synch. Thanks for the info, veggiesomething!
Anybody seen 'em live on stage? Do they actually play instruments, or is it a laptop and DAT affair?
Sumner and co. are almost 50 somethings. Don't expect on stage gymnastics from geriatrics. You're lucky to see New Order live!

I was there. Mostly people in their 20s, with a few 30+ people here and there.
Lots of live playing. In fact, Barney, Hooky and the new guy spent most of the show strumming on guitars. Ocasionally, the new guy would play a few notes on a nearby synthesizer.
They didn't move around all that much, but as someone pointed out, they're getting on in the years. And the actual live musicianship and singing was excellent.
Barney was funny--"Alright, now we're going to bore you by playing a song from our new album. It's pretty good, though." And it was. They played a good mix of old and new stuff. Bizarre Love Triangle, Crystal, Love Will Tear Us Apart, Regret, etc. And then, for the encore...Blue Monday (surprise, surprise).
The only thing about the show that I didn't like was the two asshole hecklers that stood in back of me ("PRESS PLAY! PLAY SOMETHING I KNOW! PLAY BLUE TUESDAY!") Oh yeah, I saw a Randall clone at the show.

Did anyone check out Peter Hook's DJ set at PopScene this past thursday? I'm kind of curious what a set of his sounds like.
I had a great time at the concert. I had always heard they weren't much of a live band and it was nice to find out for myself that they actually rocked.

During one of the instrumental passages of Blue Monday, they played a vocal sample from the Kylie Minogue song "Can't Get You Out of My Head." The gay couple standing in front of me looked like they were going to explode with joy.

I didn't hear his set, but a few years ago, the band released an installment of one of those "Back to Mine" compilations. It has everything from Captain Beefheart to Joey Bletram.

The Killers are a great band, they`re a direct descendant of New Order`s influence...and even Joy Division themselves are fans of the band.
Speaking of which, there`s a good Q&A about the details of the Anton Corbijn film about Ian Curtis, with the surviving members of the band and the director himself--in the latest Record Collector magazine, of all places.
randall fairbrook

I think all the Eurogoths like Randall Fairbrook are all in a huff cos their beloved Joy Division is being perversed--nevermind the last thirty years with the fuckwits that dress up like him and sing out loud to "Love Will Tear Us Apart" at nightclubs. Put on Warsaw and it`ll clear the fucking floor. See too many Ian Curtis clones, why don`t they try to master his epileptic fits and go all the way?
Fuck, New Order Are Way Better Than Joy Division. Miserable music. Miserable, beautiful--but fucking depressing. The reissues are a great exercise in repackaging, after the Heart And Soul box, the Bain Douche, Preston live CDs, Martin Hannet`s mixes, etc.
The Killers are a direct reflection of people born after Joy Division finished off, they made two really good records. Can`t say that for anybody else here.
Yeah, fuck all those people who romanticize and "protect" Ian Curtis` legacy, nuthin`to protect. It`s probably the best story you`ll see about music, definitely better than 24 Hour Party People.

errr..i do not romanticize nor protect..some things i do hold sacred but i can look with a clean eye...
new order are way different than joy division.....especially the dogshit they are putting out lately......but when new order were good they were on like megatron....fucking fabulous....
joy division was fucking great too but if you listened to it all too often you would want to isolate, cut and die...
and as for the killers making 2 good records and no one here doing the same....
ummm....i just taught a teen with severe autism to wash his own dishes...i am pretty fucking certain the killers never did that....

I highly doubt you're a Joy Division freak, but the last couple records--that one Waiting For The Sirens Call and even the one before that (yes, with the forgettable Rock The Shack) were probably better than Republic. Proper Mancs and I meet up about twice a year here and we discuss it at great lengths...even The Killers.
For the sake of marketing, Joy Division are vulgarly untouchable: monochrome, an "ill" frontman which evokes a morbid curiosity for every disaffected teenager...I mean, with the posting of whatshisname's image from "Control", it's so obvious that Southern California is THE hot market for this kinda shit. I know people secretly gaggle and giggle privately, when it's safe that they're not being watched.
Whereas New Order, they're getting fat, Peter Hook DJ gigs, people take them for granted. Nevermind they were in that other band, but fuck, Blue Monday, influencing all things good and bad for the last thirty years? Miles ahead, they are.
every other band that's come out cites them...none of them come close.
randall fairbrook

i never have and do not claim to be a joy division freak.....i have most of their stuff, nothing collectible really except for a few FACboxed purple cassette things....i have gone through periods where i listened to all my jd stuf nonstop and it does put one in a mood....
i agree with you on the cult of sickness/ian thing......same as the cobain thing you think? death does not make you a better star....if you are a good musician and you kill yourself or die in your prime it makes everyone take anything you have recorded and idolize it......but chamces are you deserve that praise..if you are good.....see:otis redding....whom i think is underrated for how wonderful his music was....
new order...well....i adore them.....what they used to be.....maybe if sumner dies they will get another lead singer and be badassed all over again for 12 years or so.....and the cycle will continue...
miles ahead they were, still are only if you are counting running off of their old fumes..which totally counts to me but think if they were still putting out stuff now that could compare to shellshock/lonesome tonight/thieves like us/subculture/leave me alone/your silent face, etc...
and yes, sadly so i can see joy division turning into something "scene" especially here in oc, which is more vulgar than los angeles in scene aspects because they have to try harder because they are los angeles...
i cannot think of too many bands from england i adore as much as new order, well..the smiths and morrissey..and the cure...and then everything but the girl....but that is probably it...wait...bauhaus...

I`m highly suspect of people who don`t go all the way when they say they`re into a band. Fuck, Crispy Ambulance are Joy Division enough, they`re not innovative but damn close.
Anybody who owns "just" Substance is just a poseur?....see, that`s elitist, but I go back-and-forth between keeping things so and waiting for these so called fans to come around. Buy a fucking ACR record, for chrissakes, you can pick up a used copy of Power Corruption And Lies for less than what people piss out a@PBRB
Please implore any friends who have an annoying Ian Curtis poster of him with head-in-hands, to tear it down. That`s what I say.
Anton actually got into this whole rocknroll thing cos of Joy Division, so whether he shot U2 or Depeche Mode (or The Killers), it`s all a lineage thing for me. For better or worse, they`re all connected. It`s so obvious.

That just goes to show how worthless tattoos are, and have been for the last ten years. Anybody who got their first ones after 1992 or 1993 are complete impostors to me. That includes family, friends and loved ones, I regard anybody who doesn`t, as pretty decent people.

For me, I mean about understanding the music and doing actual academic, historical and appreciative research. Not necessarily owning all the records, anything that implies you have to have economic wealth to achieve. It`s almost bleeding into comic-book collecting territory, which is still a "boys-only" territory, which ultimately leads to what I feel is the "white supremacy" complex, where people are literally Nazis about it.
That fucks it up cos music is meant to be free (not freely traded and stolen online, I`m adamant about it after a number of years advocating illegal downloading, the American spirit doesn`t have enough sense of self preservation or restraint), and if anything I think information should be exchanged more frequently. That, Americans do well, because they love expressing opinions.

Just like a Californian Anglophile would romanticize all those Manchester bands--there`s a dozen people I know alone who`d get excited about the Chameleons or The fucking Cure coming into town. Cafe Bleu people in the 90s, with their fake British accents.
The Killers do the same thing, pasty, pink-skinned Brits sooner rather listen to Modest Mouse and West Coast bands and emulate them. And they do. Joy Division is basically like a Mancunian version of Alice Cooper, Stooges and The Doors, right?
Americans *always get it wrong, especially with discovering new music, or anything good. It`s all made in the US of A, but nobody gives a shit until the Brits get a hold of it.

Leaving aside for a moment the issue of you not knowing what the word 'impostor' means, why is the passion of some kid who happened to be born too late to catch a band on the first go around any less meaningful or authentic than somebody else's? Am I an 'impostor' for loving Bach*, who died a lot more than ten or twenty years before I was born?
I love it when people are willing to look outside of the tiny window of the present and immerse themselves in the cultural productions of other times, other cultures. Good for them. It's a little tiring when somebody who just last week discovered some band you've known of for years comes up to you, all excited, like they're the first ones ever to have heard it, but so what. Sure, we kvetch a bit about it but ultimately, it's awesome when people find music and get really excited about it.

I've heard a few bands with multiple bass players:
Ned's Atomic Dustbin
G vs. B
(I'll probably come up with more later)
But I can't hear the difference. To my ear, they don't sound any different from bands with a singular bass player.
Do you guys notice the extra bass?

With Ned's, since they also had a guitar player, a normal listener would probably never know they had two bass players.
I think, with Ned's at least, you'd notice that both bass players were playing distinct bass lines that, from what I recall, rarely overlapped.

new order related. im sure ive shown this here before but this one time a few years ago i was djing a party in the hills somewhere and the dj booth was in the backyard and i accidentally fell out of the booth area and rolled down the hill with a record in my hand. the record was the bizarre love triangle 12" and it was an asian poarty and i distinctly remembered that i needed to protect that record with my life cuz i wasnt gon pass up the opportunity of flipping this record at an asian party. needless to say i got all cut up and dirt in my eyelids and shit but that record was pristine. my dude jeffie graf made me this gif to commemorate his amusement.

I think I mentioned before that I can't really tell what you look like because you look so different in all of your photos. Was this one taken during a different time period or was it just the cold climate that's making you look different?

reply from peter hook, a shitty excuse but nonetheless.......real i guess...
i gave the reissues a cursory listen....i looked at the issues mentioned on the new order forums and found a lot of them to be true and some i did not hear or notice........
this would bother the audiophile new orderphile more than the usual fan ....a lot of the mistakes are audible..clicks and pops, dropouts of left channel, and even on one song the channels are reversed throughout....

I remember reading 24 Hour Party People and getting to the part where Peter Saville drove the printers crazy when it came time to press the sleeve to Power, Corruption & Lies because the color palette he wanted to use was at the time expensive to reproduce.

New Order and Blur members announce supergroup
After the Manchester band's acrimonious break-up, three of their members – minus Peter Hook – have joined with Blur's Alex James to form Bad Lieutenant
Sean Michaels
guardian.co.uk, Monday 15 June 2009 10.45 BST
First came Joy Division, then New Order, and now there's Bad Lieutenant. Following the demise of New Order, three of the group's former members have teamed up for a new band – and brought along a member of Blur.
Frontman Bernard Sumner, drummer Stephen Morris and guitarist Phil Cunningham have joined with Blur's Alex James for Bad Lieutenant's debut album, due in October. "I'm very proud of it, it's a very good album," Sumner told the BBC. "It's pretty guitary too because we've got three guitarists in the band." There may yet be more guitarists added – Sumner has promised that other Manchester musicians are to join the "collective" on tour.
Bad Lieutenant formed last year, after New Order's acrimonious break-up. "Basically [bassist Peter Hook] left the band, that's all I want to say about it," Sumner said. "We split into two factions. There's me, Steve and Phil. The other is Peter."
New Order were one of the key new wave bands, created by members of Joy Division after the suicide of singer Ian Curtis in 1980. Tracks like Blue Monday, Temptation and World in Motion are among the classics of the decade. Blur were meanwhile champions of the Britpop era. Though they broke up in 2003, James and the rest of the band have reunited for a string of UK and Irish dates.

I am so in the dark! I had no idea New Order broke up! :(
Well, this does sound very interesting. I like Alex James and I'm curious as to what other Manchester musicians will be added. I'm going to go check youtube for some sneak peeks...
I heard Blur might be planning to tour the US for a few shows. This is just rumors but I'm hoping it's true.

Blur must be fielding an offer to do Coachella next year.
I forgot I joined the Bad Lieutenant Facebook group a while back. The only reason I remembered was that my personal feed had an update.
There should be a music video of the band in that profile somewhere.

I can only hope it's better than the last few New Order records. For a band that I love a lot, they sure haven't made much in the way of what I would call relevant music in the last 15 years.

Yeah, it's happened before. I don't care how so many people piss on Electronic, I still enjoyed the music that Bernie and Johnny Marr did--most especially the second album.

Shit. Just checking that video out and found out that Jimmi Goodwin of Doves was their bass player. Talk about a talented group of Manchester-based musicians.

New Orders latest cd will be out soon. Here is a little blurb I found:
New Order finishes album. Good news for the New Order fans who have been waiting 8 years for a new album to be released. Newordergetready is now finished and was produced by Steve Osborne from Curve and the Shamen fame. The record was mixed by Mark Spike Stent and Flood, both of Depeche Mode fame. The album will
feature special guest vocals from Billy Corgan Smashing Pumpkins and Bobby Gillespie Primal Scream.

I heard a couple of tracks on their Facebook page. I didn't like them. Kind of bland. On the bright side, Barney's also making a synth-heavy album. It's produced by Stuart Price/Jacques Lu Cont, the dude who produced the last Killers album.

Is there a name to the project? I remember Jacques LuCont from his minimalist house productions from the late 90's.
