So last week I went to see a matinee in Century City... I tried to go in the main parking lot entrance and they directed me to the one in back. Okay. No problem since I just filled my gas tank. So I make a couple rights and pull in to a lane that's pyloned as if I were going to Dodger Stadium. "Is this where we park to see a movie?" Yes, but the rent-a-cop informs me that I must drive around the block and re-enter in one of the other two lanes so they can search my car!
Right next to us is a sedan and a mini-van getting searched. Now I don't have any firearms, anthrax, aliens, or even pornos in my trunk, but screw that. I'm no Libertarian, but searching my car to catch the 2:15 showing of Zoolander is too much. I drove to Westwood and saw it in a harrassment-free zone.
I know Century City got blown up in one of those Die Hard movies, so maybe there's something to the place besides entertainment lawyers, but I don't think it's exactly the WTC or even LAX. I'm going to allow my car to be searched for a matinee of Zoolander? Yeah, right.
Oh, yeah, unlike getting searched in a business park lot, the movie is pretty funny.

thats ok...for the last month, anytime I drive on post, I risk being searched...they search about every 3rd car coming on post...i have a little higher chance of getting searched cause i drive an SUV (everyone knows, you couldnt blow up a building with c4 in a sedan... that and if you walk on post you get your bag searched...oh well...none of that really bothers me although it is getting a little old...the one that kills me is that we still have a 10pm-5am curfew and are not alowed to frequent any bars or clubs....I just found a really nice place that knows how to mix drinks and has a decent selection of alohol within close stumbling distance of my home...I haven't been able to go there in a month...damn...

Why is there a curfew in LA? I don't understand. It's been kind of a bitch in NYC -- The Subways are running pretty bad, the smell, random parts of the city keep getting evacuated, etc. but we don't have a curfew!?

hmmm...curfew huh? that seems a bit extreme...
well obviously for people in nyc, its a different scene. first as rgcam said, the subways are kind of messed up. also, we drive a car on the weekends and it took us 4 hours round-trip to see my parents when it normally takes 1&1/2 hours. there are police and national guards everywhere. also, there are simply less people in the city, although people are slowly coming back. also, there are bomb scares every single day in nyc, and at least once a week 5th avenue where i work gets closed off for one reason or another.
at work: i now have to pull out my security pass at work and show it to the guards in the lobby whereas before i could simply scan it. the mailroom guy that delivers our mail now wears sterile gloves to give us our mail. every day i get memos in my inbox on how to deal with various emergency situations.
the upside is that restaurant reservations are more easily had these days. a friend booked a table on thurs for nobu the next evening! guess there's always a...errrr...brighter side.

Just to set it straight (based on personal experience):
There is no curfew in Korea. People drink 24/7. U.S. military might, though.
There is no curfew in L.A. I've been to clubs past 2 with no prob.
There is no curfew in O.C. I've been smoking crack on the streets...oops! Uh, scratch that.

yesterday i got stuck on the goddamn f train right before it was to arrive into 34th street. so we were stuck underground for one hour while police were investigating a mailbox of some sort in penn station. of course only my train was stuck - all of the other trains were diverted. luckily i had a seat so that i could have a nap instead of huff and puff like the standing passengers.
that sucks..im planning on heading up there this weekend, but im not sure how and if the path train is affected, especially since i want to leave from newport mall which is basically across the river from where the WTC was..

(Reuters) - American Airlines was sued for more than $50 million on Monday by the husband of a highly paid portfolio manager who was killed on Sept. 11 in her World Trade Center office. The suit, filed in Manhattan federal court, was brought on behalf of Bonnie Shihadeh Smithwick who had worked at the Fred Alger Management Company on the 93rd floor of the north tower known as One World Trade Center. The tower was hit by American Flight 11 after hijackers took control of the plane.
The suit alleged that Smithwick survived the initial impact of the attack and telephoned her husband, Thomas Smithwick, using a cellular phone. However, she was unable to escape the raging fire and died when the tower collapsed.
The Smithwick suit sees $50 million in compensatory damages and unspecified punitive damages for the terror, pain and suffering, wrongful death and economic loss.
John Kelly, the plaintiff's lawyer, said Smithwick was highly paid and her estate would not have been eligible to receive any money from the Sept. 11 Victims Compensation Fund because she had substantial life insurance policies.
"Ms. Smithwick's case presents a clear example of the fundamental flaw in the Victims Compensation Fund ... any compensation due under the plan is reduced by monies received from collateral sources such as life insurance policies," Kelly said. "In Ms. Smithwick's case, that amount would be reduced to zero."

okay, so booter made a sarcastic comment, why dwell on it?
this wasn't meant to be sarcastic at all. really. the human body requires 8 glasses a day. i need about 10, cuz the stuff runs right through me. at the end of the day, i go home REALLY thirsty. this new "policy" has been the subject of serious debate here. people need their water, and i think it's extreme paranoia that's backing this new rule. they think terrorists might masquerade as arrowhead water men and blow the fucking building up. how lame.

i live four blocks away from wtc. tourists usually dont bother me, but when i walk out of the subway and am bombarded by 4 million tourists staring at a mass grave site-that gets really annoying. plus i think its gross that people go to look at something so sad. and on top of that theres really nothing to see cause it looks just like a huge construction site.
Yeah, the tourists at Ground Zero IS kinda lame, and the “viewing platform” sorta tacky, but it’s partly due to human nature. We’re curious about death. And sex and violence. That’s why there’s so much of that on TV, in movies, etc.
But getting back to the topic, I went to CA in Feb., and the security was SO easy on me. Perhaps this was because I appear so very non-threatening. J
I was in DC two weeks after 9/1l. I did all the touristy stuff and was sad to see all the major monuments surrounded by those ugly concrete barricades. The Lincoln Memorial had an ugly chicken-wire fence around it AND the barricades which made the whole experience retarded.
A lot of bag-checking now goes on at major cultural institutions and monuments. It’s lame and now merely a formality. Most places that do practice this simply tell you to open your bag/purse and shine a flashlight into it. They don’t even bother to sift around.

fuck you, yangnone. i guess all 45 floors of this building is LAZY, huh? i've never seen folks bring water jugs to work. at least no one on my floor does. come to think of it, i've never seen people on the subway carry water jugs/bottles. to fix the problem, people have complained to management, me included, but "minor" things such as this are slow to process. trust me, the cafe makes a killing on bottled water, and i'm sure there's some inter-office conspiracy going on.
make sure you get the facts before you attack someone, asshole.

You or the other people on the 45 floors drinking water are the last of my concerns. The situation could easily be solved if you carried a bottle or two in a bag every day. Though you are too selfish a cunt to probably care about anything beyond the discomfort of your own parched throat, maybe if you stopped and thought other people have been affected by the situation in much worse ways... Hhhmm starting with a related issue, how about the guy that delivers the water to your building...Is he out of a job and no longer able to feed himself or his family because the people on all 45 floors of your building no longer need his service, or perhaps he was delivering to the WTC on the day the attacks happened, I suppose that could be a stretch, but I'm sure somebody was. Perhaps he was saved and only took a bit of a pay-cut because he was one of the countless people who were called up because of their commitment to the National Guard...so for the last 8 months he has stood in an airport somewhere in the nation, probably separated from his family earning far less than minimum wage listening to cunts like you complain about having to have their bags searched in the interests of security... Of course, this is only one person, what about the other delivery men that face the same thing because other buildings won't allow water either, or the people that lost jobs, or loved ones... So, you'll have to excuse me if I don¡¯t shed a tear for your parched throat, especially since a solution is readily available, but you self-admittedly are too fucking lazy to do anything about it.

did you not read what i just wrote? i and others have complained about this to management who are slow to do anything about it. we have lost the water men, plus others due to budget cuts, and yes, this is a concern but beyond my scope of control. my complaint is at least one step in bringing them back.

Perhaps my metaphor with the water delivery guy was a bit too much for you to comprehend...there are many people suffering from what happened on 9-11. These include people who died, families that lost loved ones, people who lost jobs, and people who have had their lives turned upside down and inside out for a number of reasons. If the worst impact the event has on you is that you suffer from a dry throat while at work, count yourself lucky and have some consideration for those who have suffered greater losses or inconveniences. There is a world outside your own fucking head with people that have lives.
As I said before, the reason I even responded to the thread is you constantly bitch about small problems, but never want to do the things within your power to fix them...self admitted laziness on your part.... fucking waa; if your pussy hurts rub it...
as for why I come to the boards, you and the dehydrated people in your building are not the only ones who make up these boards. there is a good mix of intelligent conversation, witty humor and people seeking general help... the occasional complaints or rants are fine too.

ok, you self-righteous fuck: please run along and tell this to martin too. he had to go somewhere else to see zoolander. why don't you yell at him for not thinking outside his immediate situation too? Martin was inconvenienced and found a soluton to his problem by driving to another theater. If you wuold have complained about the water and said that you were carrying it to work, I wouldn't have said anything. It is your constant lack of any intitiative or effort to improve the situation you were in that initially brough t about my criticism
ok, so the conclusion i draw from your posts is that i must thoroughly explain myself or situatuion it ALL its entirety, or risk getting a pathetic rebuke from the likes of yourself. thanks, buddy. did you not read my response that went something to the effect of "get all the facts BEFORE you criticize?"
I got the facts, you were bitching that your throat was dry due to the fact you dodn't get water delivered to your building any longer because of the terrorist threats, after which it was suggested you carry water to work... you then said you were too lazy to do that... My point still stnds...Fucking waaaa... if you aren't going to do anything to help your situation, what good is it going to do to bitch, piss and moan?
no, wrong again. i posted all relevant info BEFORE your pathetic reprimand and lame "metaphor" as you call it.
*yawn*
you army men have got waaaaaay too much testoterone backed up. go smoke some weed or visit your girlfriends or something.
i'm going to refill my water bottle now.

uh, yeah, you did. i gave you all the facts here:
fuck you, yangnone. i guess all 45 floors of this building is LAZY, huh? i've never seen folks bring water jugs to work. at least no one on my floor does. come to think of it, i've never seen people on the subway carry water jugs/bottles. to fix the problem, people have complained to management, me included, but "minor" things such as this are slow to process. trust me, the cafe makes a killing on bottled water, and i'm sure there's some inter-office conspiracy going on.
make sure you get the facts before you attack someone, asshole.

as far as the water thing....why not just bring a jug of water to work with you.....until they take a more lenient stance?
ehhh, lazy. I didn't attack you by calling you lazy, you admitted it before I added my two cents, my facts are straight, you can ho back a couple pages and see for yourself. carrying a bottle or two of water would solve your problem, you do not need to carry a jug.
My criticism is based on the fact that you constantly post problems yet do not want to do anything to solve them after recieving advice, even when you petition that advice... lets think back...roommate stinks, what do I do? number of good responses...no I can't do any of those though many make sense I don't want to ... BF has friend staying in apartment...I don't like the guy what do I do... number of good responses...no action again... yes, these are old, they are the first that come to mind. If you are in a situation you can easily solve, if you choose not to solve it because you are too lazy stop fucking whining about it...

you should learn to take yourself less seriously. you might get ulcers if you don't (which might not be so bad, heh heh). this thread was inspired by how a trivial situation (going to see "zoolander") was affected by a much more serious one. the thread is called "life after 9/11," and judging by the tone of the starter, i posted similarly. this is not to be mistaken with making light of the whole 9/11 tragedy.
refer to my initial post and you will see that i merely stated ONE aspect in which 9/11 directly affected ME. i am sorry if i do not have a more "serious" matter to report, i.e., a family member or friend who died as a direct result. also take note that i did not solicit ANY advice. even if i did, why should you care or post some stupid diatribe that has no point at all?
this is a free forum for all to contribute no matter how stupid or serious. you must have issues if you take such great offense to my posts. please find a hobby.

you attacked me, saying i did nothing about it when i explicitly stated that i did. quit making mountains out of molehills, and trying to manipulate your argument to make you look like less of an asshole.
yeeks...gotta refill the bottle AGAIN!
p.s. in case you were wondering, the smelly roommate problem fixed itself, and i took advice on the unwanted house guest and kicked his ass out.

But anyway I digress.
One of the things that concerns me about life after 9-11 is that the UK govt. now wants more armed police officers on the streets. A lot more. In fact, they are prepared to shorten the training time and accept candidates who would not have been considered before the crusade against terrorism.
Here's a few facts. I guess you guys know that over here the cops do not carry guns as a matter of course. However, in every city at any given time several armed response units cruise the streets. These men are highly trained, perhaps even undergoing the most stringent vetting in the world before they qualify. This is not the US or mainland europe, we dont give hicks or moustachioed shitkickers guns and set them free on the public at large.
Anyway I guess its no big deal to folks who are used to it, but it bothers me.

don't you have a soda machine or something or toliets where you can drink from the taps??? You may want to say "restrooms" instead of "toilets", as to Americans "toilet" means the thing you pee in, not the entire room.
i just saw on the news that some chinese guy who spoke broken english got his shoes blown up because they detected a metal thing in the sole. it was a shoe warmer. =/

It's even cooler when they're knocked down again.
The fact that the admin had to be pushed so hard to even allow the 9/11 hearings speaks volumes. The fact that he refused to speak under oath (or without his babysitter) screams it.
Haha, William Gates and Nike are in there.

I don't believe that's a real list -- it's just a bunch of random words with some chemistry terms, brand names, and some acronyms for god knows what thrown in there.
iced tea, pen, desk, BJ, BDSM, JO, ASAP, sword, crossbow, javelin, McDonald's, See's Candy, Quizno's, booter, cunt, water bottle, Union Square
oh yeh, it's real.....
