A friend just emailed me this address where you can vote on how The Simpsons should be released on DVD...
http://www.epoll.com/client/poll.asp?pollid=690
No, you don't enter any contests, but maybe we'll get more cool stuff on the DVD releases as a result.
I said that I wanted full seasons with audio commentary, interactive games, promotional clips, and the whole nine yards. None of this best-of-character or theme crap. I want the whole thing chronologically. Maybe it's my collector's mentality.
Post more Simpsons thoughts, trivia, and notes here.

The Simpsons have been on a really long time and they've provided hundreds of hours quality entertainment. However I don't want to watch them any more 'cause I feel like they've done EVERYTHING. I almost get the impression that the writers have a big table of characters and situations and they've explored almost every permutation and they're running on fumes.

I watched them religiously for the first few seasons and now just catch re-runs when I have time. I can't comment on the new ones, whether or not they've peaked out or not, but I stand by it as the best show ever with no qualms. Way more gags and references per minute than another other show ever. I probably don't even get half of them, and I do pretty good at Jeopardy!

It has gone through a lot of story optoins. Right now its my old stand by. I would watch Simpsons if there isn't anything else decent on at the time. That seems to happen often lately.
I think my preference declined a little because the reception for the local station isn't great. I want my cartoons to be visually good and not just mediocre. This includes simple animation like the Simpsons.
As far as writing goes Simpsons is very good. It has more wit than most shows. I echo what Martin said about the show.

My favorite one (at the moment) is where Bart got the Mr. Microphone and spoke to the Flanders kids: "Rod, Todd, this is God. Walk into the wall... Leave cookies at the Simpson's doorstep..."
Does high-tech or high-quality animation mean it's a good show? I don't know how much that affects me. It's totally the writing that lifts it above anything else.
I remember seeing it in China and wondering how the hell they translate the subtitles. Does that work? What do they do to "Aye curumba!" in Spanish-speaking places? Places like Australia are probably easier...

Here's a little trivia. I mentioned this on chat last week, but I think I'll say it again for the folks who didn't know. In the episode where Homer goes to eat sushi and gets poisoned from eating the fugu (blowfish), the Japanese guy who goes up to sing karaoke is actually one of the producers of the show. He goes up and says in a shakey voice, "Hi...umm..I'm Richard Sakai..". Watch for his name at the beginning of the Simpsons show...it'll be one of the first names to show on the bottom of the screen. I havne't seen any of the new Simpson's shows for a few years so I'm not sure if his name will still show up, but look for it on the older shows...say from about 5 years ago to be safe.

The best episodes were when Conan was writing for them. Those ones kicked ass. Is anyone else collecting the toys? We just got the new Mayor Quimby set, Sunday Best Homer and Camp Krusty Bart and we saw the Sideshow Bob one, but the box was all fucked up so we passed.

I think the coolest thing about the Simpsons toys is that they are going to be making them for a bunch of the lesser known characters like Snake, Captain McCallister, Groundskeeper Willie and Pimply Faced Teen. But I just saw the Futurama "Nibbler" wind up toy which was way cooler than any of the Simpsons toys. I guess there's a Bender toy too which I need to find now...

1. frank grimes (or "grimey" as he liked to be called) coffin being lowered into the ground, totally ignored by everyone at the funeral: they are laughing at homer simpson talking in his sleep.
2. homer: "hey apu, you have any of that beer with candy floating in it, you know, skittlebrow?"
apu: "no such a product exists, you must have dreamed it sir"
homer: "oh, well, get me a sixpack and a bag of skittles."
3.bart: "you cant take away my focusin! I need every brain cell blazing to defeat my invisible enemies!"
4.homer: "you can either go look for your dog, or sit here crying eating can after can of dog food until your tears smell like dog food...( bart leaves) ...(sad homer voice)I almost had him eating dog food..."
5. "internet, eh?"
Im not sure why this cracks me up, but its homer and marge's reaction to the internet and I try to insert it into converstions where it doesnt belong when im fucked up. Almost as funny is "Maude, eh?" or "Telemarketing, eh?"
6. Bart talking to Lisa: "So I says to Mabel, I says...(Homer walks in, hes just been tripping on insanity peppers)
We'll finish this later...(Homer leaves the room) So I says to Mabel, I says..."

you know what else is good about that episode? when homer gets his face sucked in by the superpowered vacuum and then he takes it off and he's got that strange eye thang goin on! that's friggin hilarious!
Mr. Burns talking to Smithers about the Ramones who just played his birthday. "Have the Rolling Stones killed. But Sir. Do as I say!" Also like the Treehouse of horrors line. "We must kill the boy. Yes but how did you know he was a vampire. A vampire? AHHHHHHHHH!." And of course one of the Simpsons most brilliant moments of zen when homer makes the time machine toaster. "Look kids it raining again." as donuts fall from the sky. Tears down face as I remember it wistfully.

Yes, its me: C. Montgomery Burns. In my quest to rule Springfield, I asked Smithers to help me research the feasibility of building a giant robot...to squash sheep and precocious child actors. I think Smithers is trying to distract me...there is nothing about brute mechanical aggression on this site. I'm going to release the hounds on him. (screams in the distance) Exxxcellent.

I've kinda lost the faith with the Simpsons. Its not quite "appointment tv" anymore. I hate how shitty the plots are these days and I've noticed the writers use a lot of double entendres which I think is best left for a crap show like the Family Guy or Beavis and Butthead.
Futurama rocks, o' course.

My fave Chief Wiggum-ism - arriving on scene of Kwik-e-mart robbery
"Come out with your hands up... and something with coconut on it"
The later stuff is not as good. The last truly great episode was the Kim Basinger one, in which Ron Howard is hysterical. There have been plenty in recent times where the episode seems made up of two disconnected halves.
But, I still want to see an entire series of "Battling Seizure Robots" and even lower quality Simpsons beats almost everything else around. I find it deeply painful to watch the first series where Homer is too throaty and macho, rather than a childlike imp who operates on a purely immediate level.

LONDON, England (Reuters) -- Could the end be near for cult television cartoon family "The Simpsons?"
"I think we are closer to winding it up," the television show's creator, Matt Groening told the Financial Times in an interview published Tuesday.
"Although what happens generally if we win the Emmy for best animation show is that that gives us another couple of years to run it into the ground," he said.
Groening has earned millions for media baron Rupert Murdoch's Fox network since the series featuring Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and baby Maggie first entered the lives of television viewers in 1989.
Its appeal has spread far beyond its American setting and its dysfunctional characters have become globally recognized symbols of mid-life crisis and childhood rebellion.
TV Guide magazine recently placed the animated show eighth on its list of the 50 greatest television shows of all time.
When a recent episode depicted Rio de Janeiro as teeming with rats, monkeys and street crime, Brazilian tourist officials were outraged and the show's executive producer was forced to apologize.
Even so, Groening admitted to weariness with the formula of the show, now in its 13th year. "It becomes increasingly difficult as the years go by to keep on not only surprising the audience, but surprising ourselves," he said.
He said he doubted, however, that his creative angst would overly concern the television accountants. "I think Fox will wring every last penny out of the show before they call it a day," he said.

Just Futurama. They had the voice of homer guy (sorry its early in the morn. for me) on a local radio station stating that Matt G. couldn't really stop the simpsons even if he wanted to.
He was just upset that they are cancelling Futurama, which he thinks has many more possibilies for storylines than the simpsons.
So no, they are not planning to end the best TV show ever.

The actors who voice The Simpsons for Mexican TV are involved in a dispute over the use of non-union labour.
The performers, who have worked on The Simpsons for 15 years, fear losing their jobs because the dubbing company is seeking cheaper actors.
The dubbing company for The Simpsons says it has asked the cast to continue but needs to hire other actors.
It blames the union for using tactics that have meant it has lost ground to rivals in Venezuela and Chile.
Mexico's National Actors Association accuses the company Grabaciones y Doblajes Internationales of threatening the livelihoods of 15,000 members by using non-union actors who tend to be paid less.
"We're not people who like to fight," said Humberto Velez, who is the voice of Homer Simpson.
"The only thing we know how to do is act. But we will never let people that aren't interested in agreements take away our rights for their own benefit. How am I supposed to take care of my kids?"
Broken provisions
He says he only earns about 600 pesos (£28) per episode and felt obliged to stand up for his union.
The union says the company has broken provisions of an agreement that dictates the use of union labour.
But the company says it is struggling to remain competitive because of the union's actions.
"With attitudes like these, our country has lost ground for dubbing in Latin America," the company said.
"Much of this work today is done in Venezuela, Colombia and, more recently, in Argentina and Chile." A government arbitrator has been appointed to try to resolve the dispute.
Nancy Mackenzie, the voice of Marge Simpson, said: "You get to the point where you care deeply for your cartoon character.
"You love them. You go to bed with them at night. It's a sad state, and not because of the money. It's for love."

Simpsons make in Korea. Fact not known to many, especially non-asians. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=572&ncid=572&e=4&u=/nm/20050302/lf_nm/korea_simpsons_dc
They parodied that in the show in the past. I don't remember what episode it's from, but their was a TV report about Itchy and Scratchy, and they were talking about how Koreans were making America's finest cartoons.
slackerbot
03-03-2005, 12:27 AM
actually, i think the korean reference was used in more than one episode.
on a side note: a lot of the current cartoons are animated in korea. just watch the credits at the end. and a few other cartoons have made references to korean animation.
windchillFactor
03-03-2005, 03:59 AM
The commentary on the last DVD set addresses the joke about Korean artists being chained and held at gunpoint. The animation company was pretty offended by the joke and made threats to the extent of not developing the sequence, but ultimately the skit was made and all was forgiven (if one is to believe the commentary).
If I remember it correctly, somebody eventually said, "well, it was good to hear they were treated well," but then the uncomfortable topic changed quickly.
Yup, the commentary on Futurama mentions it several times on each disc, and Family Guy has made a couple jokes about not pissing them off, or something.

Bart the Mayor
By Wesley Mead (wesley@snpp.com) - May 19, 2005
Residents of Northridge in Los Angeles are in a very unusual position this week: their newly elected mayor is Bart Simpson – well, Nancy Cartwright, who has provided his voice on "The Simpsons" since the show's very beginning.
Cartwright appears pleased with her newfound political career, as do the residents of Northridge: she earlier stated that "Everyone finds it funny that Bart is the new mayor. I can influence people because I'm Bart Simpson!"
She continued: "I live in a nice neighbourhood, but down the road there's drugs and gangs, stealing and illiteracy."
The 47-year-old mother-of-two plans to clamp down on youth crime during her reign. In addition to playing Bart on "The Simpsons", she plays Nelson Muntz, Ralph Wiggum and Todd Flanders, as well as appearing in many other animated TV shows such as "Animaniacs" and "Kim Possible".

it would be cool if they did a simpsons in that style she did. like maybe one segment of treehouse of horrors or something
I liked her Matt Groening take on Miyazaki piece, too.

Bottom left: I'm talking, she's kissing.
Bottom right: I don't know what the hell that is.
Is it possible to make sense of modern life without the Simpsons? I'm thinking unpossible.
working with a crew of people at the store who drop simpsons references as often as i do is a double-edged sword.

ohh....it's pretty big.....i guess....
Is it possible to communicate with people who don't know the Simpsons? It's a whole range of humor you take for granted.
it's possible, because if the reference is subtle enough, you can pawn it off as your own material. like my friend and i always drop the "space age moon waffles" reference into every conversation about food. and people are like WOW, I SHOULD TRY THAT SOMETIME! hm.
i mean, if you're dropping a straightup quote, you're going to look really really awkward if the person doesn't know what you're talking about.
Not even quotes, I mean I've been watching most of my life now, so has anyone I've been friends with. Our whole concept of what's funny or what's a big deal or not, or cool or uncool, is based on or summed up by the show.
Not all younger kids are have grown up with it now. I can't even think of other ways to say certain things about a situation than refer to the show.
It's not even talking...that show is better than therapy. Anytime I'm acting a certain way, it might pop in my head I'm acting like a Milhouse or whoever, and I can snap out it right away.
Try telling somebody not to act like a Milhouse when they have no idea who that is. There's not a better way to say it.

Yes, they're still making new episodes. I was just watching some on hulu.com last night. Is the current season number 19?
I wonder if they'll run through their 20th season and then call it quits?

the season that starts later this month is season 20 and last time i heard they are signed on to do at least 21 seasons. due to animation taking a long time they have to plan ahead that far. its still making fox alot of money i dont think they will stop in the near future.
One time I told someone, "Never help anyone." They were HORRIFIED. I regret nothing.

One of my faves from Chief Wiggum:
“If your nose starts bleeding it means you’re picking it too much…Or not enough.”
It's pretty funny cases in most situation a Homerism will lighten the situation, unless the person doesn't get it, then you seem like a huge asshole idiot.
But I am so I just roll with it.

I recently used this very line and the listener didn't get it. In fact, they starting going on on how it's our duty as human beings to help one another. I had to explain myself.
Yeah, but this person was going on and on about this situation and I just said and the silence was so long and awkward I couldn't even say it. It's funny now cause it's bullshit. What other one thing points out everything that's bulllshit so well? Even tragedy is something you can laugh at, in the right way. Even the show running out of ideas is a joke. Goddamn I love this show.

If only it was a real band, I'd love to hear the other verisons for different songs.
There is a bluesgrass AC/DC cover band. Pretty...um, what's bluesgrass lingo for unexpectedly not that strange?

The Simpsons Poised for Multi-Season Pickup
By Joyce Eng Thu Oct 30, 6:41 PM PDT
Don't change that channel yet.
The Simpsons, TV's longest-running American sitcom, is on tap for at least three more seasons, The New York Post reports.
"The cast is signed for three more years, so I would now say it's about a 90 percent chance we'll come back for at least one of those three," Al Jean, the show's executive producer, said. "I actually think it's better than a 50 percent chance we'll do three more years of this at least."

I totally forgot about "Treehouse of Horror" last night. Was it any good?

it was ok. not as good as previous ones.
Transformers.. i thought it was meh. it had its moments. but it could've been better.
Mad Men.. i don't know why they even bothered. this is a pretty obscure show and i'm pretty sure a small number of viewers got the reference.
Peanuts skit.. this was ok. i'm actually surprised they didn't do this a long time ago.

I was surprised by the part of running Krusty thru the wood chipper. I didn't expect to see that on a TV14 show. The Simpson's has BECOME the itchy and scratchy show itself.

Thanks for confirmation!

I got to go to the Treehouse of Horror party last night, it was at Universal Studios, built around the Simpsons Ride.
Here I am, not ready for the picture:

i thought last night's episode was funny. well, mainly the Apple stuff. the muslim/terrorist thing was kinda meh.
when did homer become a more liberal (if still easily influenced by the media) guy? first he votes for obama, and then he's defending bart's new muslim friend and his family?
the apple bit was hilarious though. bart fucking up steve jobs' transmission with the whole "you're paying 400 bucks for a piece of plastic that cost 8 bucks to make" spiel was awesome. haven't laughed that hard at a new simpsons bit in a long ass time.
"me and my new boyfriend bill gates make out every night on top of a pile of your money!" :D hahaha

I liked last night's ep. The Apple shit was great, and on my station was followed immediately by an ad for an iPod of some sort.

http://www.hulu.com/the-simpsons. The episode you want is "Take My Life Please".
I thought they needed to turn on AA. Lots of jaggies. Maybe that's due to watching the version on Hulu.com.
Biggest difference was an alternate, extended intro sequence. Additional gags throughout the opening credits.
The episode was otherwise "meh".
