i'm afraid of mine for next year. he's a vocal music major, and apparently he "djs"...which i assume is for like grade school dances and shit....agh..

I killed all my roommates.

So my problems different... fucking dumbass neighbors who insist on blasting "I waaant it thataaaawayyy" shit that drives me mad when I am trying to read.

I usually retort with a nice sonic blast of Carmina Burana.

That's nothin', I came back from class one day to find my roommate spankin' the plank to a porno movie in the damned living room! That was a truly fucked up moment and traumatizing. It grossed me out because 1)it was in the wide open 2)his nasty ass cheeks were planted on MY couch 3)he was using my tv & vcr. I don't care if you want to choke the chicken but damn, do it in the privacy of your own room.

phism
06-21-2002, 11:35 AM
uh, isn't that his own room too?

i don't know if i'd really mind that much, as long as he cleans his shit up. but when i'm in college i'll probably either take advantage of slutty girls or do my business in the shower.

just... Ummm, poppin' some pimples."

As for the TV, VCR and remote, I hope you Pine-Sol'd the muthafucka.

His response was more like a kid who got caught with his hand in the proverbial cookie jar. He was like, "Oh man!" I just went into the bathroom so that he could get his shit together and we didn't really speak of it after that. I guess it was embarassing for both of us and so we just kept quiet.

Phism--we lived in a 2 bedroom apartment and he was in the living room. I don't want to get into a debate about what belongs to who but if you're sharing an apartment with someone I think it's common courtesy to not shalack the glacknoid in the wide open. Jerking off is private and should be done in closed quarters like a bedroom or bathroom.

Needless to say, I vowed never to have a roommate after that experience.

"shalack the glacknoid"... That's a metaphor I never heard
before. Funny.

I agree though, when it's time to slay the one-eyed beast,
etiquette and courtesy should be extended toward your
roommate.

worst music-listening roommate:

in england i shared a room with two sorority girls. one was really into theater and would play disney's "alladin" soundtrack constantly, sometimes several times a day, on *my* dinky little mono tape player. and sing along. to this day i feel (more) violent whenever i hear "whole new world."

one of my freshman year roommates would listen to cat stevens and the steve miller band whenever she studied. same two cds over and over on repeat for hours and days. and she smoked cigars. and she dipped. (she decided to request nonsmoking roommates to help deter her habits)

in general, the monotony gets to me more than anything. for example, as i type this some neighbor has a music box playing "memories" (looping the "memories all alone in the moonlight all alone in the something all alone in the something" part) and it's been going on for at least the past ten minutes. i'm getting out of here. now.

my problem with people listening to my music is 1) differentiating the hip-hop i listen to with the rap that everyone knows about. people always start dancing like idiots or saying dumb shit about it, or if they listen to rap they're just like 'what the fuck is this?' because no one is saying 'bling bling' 2) getting them to not make fun of japanese music simply because it's japanese.

The lady in the apartment downstairs has been playing her accordian all afternoon. I wouldn't mind, but she doesn't know many songs.

i had a roommate a few years ago who was a total nerd. two favorite artists: blues traveler and weird al. he claimed to be into music, but his "favorite" song by a band would be the only one that was popular.

examples: radiohead? "creep." nirvana? "smells like teen spirit." you get the picture.

my chicken choking roommate was a music poser. He had purchased a mini-disc player and wanted to copy my cd collection to mini-disc. A majority of the stuff he did copy from me he never listened to, it just sat there because he wanted to 'expand' his collection. How fucked up is that? If you're gonna copy music from people then listen to the damn things! I mean why even bother with that shiznit? If you're too cheap to buy cd's then you shouldn't be moochin' off of my ass. Grrrrrrrr.

I work for a record label, which is pretty kickass, but part of my job is sifting through the demos that get sent to us. And let me tell you, people make some godawful shit. For example: I listened to a demo yesterday that was nothing but a loops of dogs barking overlayed on a loop of some midi orchestra piece. I think it was Bach. Anyways, I'm all for experiment mixing and dubbing (just check out the Belljar, which is the guy who owns hit-dat's band), but this was just fucking stupid.

my current roomates listen to all of that stuff. fuggin geeks. even worse is when they have their "video game parties" where a weird mix of video game music and icky icky pop music blends together and drives me completely insane. then i jump up and yell "METAL!" and proceed to play the hardest and fastest metalcore i have.

at 2 in the morning.

shoot. i might actually be the "sucky music roomate"

i used to have a roomate who listened to alanis morrisett non-stop. when her boyfriend finally dumped her it was blasted like Radio Raheem incident asking for more D-batteries.

now i live in an apt and the girl next to me plays her guitar and sings. not that she's bad but its like she plays the same three chords over and over and over and over.

and the downstairs neighbor has a kerioke*(sp?) machine and plays the worst imaginable stuff...like boyband bad stuff...real radio pop music kinda bad. i mean its one thing to have digitally remastered voices on the radio...its another to hear a croaking frog belch out the lyrics off key and too loud...

thank the maker for good sony headphones.

I had roommates from hell before, but I think it was my music that scared them.

One was freaked out because I followed up Don Henley with Diamanda Galas. Not that he had any idea who Diamanda Galas was.

Because of my classical music fixation I was probably the roommate from hell, but I didn't see it that way. My first college roommate was a diehard doowop-by-way-of-Springsteen fan (don't ask) and would torture me all hours of the day. Being a music major I would volley rapid return fire bursts of equal parts Mahler-Xenakis-Ives-Smiths-Cure-Xymox and the resulting mashup actually turned out to be an interesting sonic experience.

this thread is becoming the "roommate from hell, unite!" thread.

my roommates played dave matthews band and tori amos nonstop, but i learned to tune out the stuff they play. the same thing could not be said about how they felt about my music. i usually end up only listening to my music on headphones or when i'm home alone. then i get the WTF face when they come home and hear what i've been playing. -__-;

Repetition is hell.

I had a roomate with a proclivity for jam band music and a very powerful sound system. Greatful Dead, Phish, The Band (niiiice name, guys...you couldn't come up with something better?)--I've heard them all. Over and over again. Not my cup of tea.

I have a friend who likes the same kind of music that I do. But once he decides he likes a song, he will put it on a continuous loop. I reckon I've heard that Republica song at least 300 times.

i had the worst roomate my first year of college he made my life a living hell, in addition to listening to really bad music( Dave Matthews, Savage Garden, Sister Hazel, & Christina Aggulleria<--(i dont care to learn how to spell this correctly)) The Asshole also had the worst movie taste of anyone i have ever met. Contents of his extensive collection are as follows:

The entire Catalog of Julia Roberts Movies

Ever After: A Cinderella Story

Meet Joe Black

Never been kissed

Every Christmas special you could think of

Forces of nature (with sandra bullock)

Jurrassic Park 2

Con Air

never been kissed

and

Can't Hardly wait.

Plus the guy had serious OCD issues and would do shit like rearrange the furniture at 3:00 am on a wednsday. He also had Six (<-not exaggerating) alarm clocks, all of wich he would set and then forget about (making for pleasant saturday mornings when he slept over at some chicks house.) and then if my alarm clock went off on him, he'd unplug it and not tell me. The best part though had to be the fact that if i left dirty dishes in the sink
he thought it fitting to remind me to clean them by throwing them on my bed.

I had a roommate that made me eventually swear off hair metal for a while. I used to listen to the bands a lot in high school...but man, as soon as I heard Ugly Kid Joe's I Don't Care About You for the 9,821st time, the fun just wore off so much. On top of that, my roommate kept an electric guitar and would think of himself as Malmsteen or something. He had terrible tone and lack of imagination for his "guitar solos" (for lack of a better term).

I still listen to the occasional Dio or Dokken song, but I'm glad that it's more along the casual side these days.

The good thing for me too these days though is that with my brother for a roommate, we actually have dovetailing interests in music. He turns me on to what's new and good in hip hop and electronic music, I let him in on what's cracking in indie rock and metal.

'jim

Ugly Kid Joe was like a hair metal band trying to be grunge. Awful.

I've been thinking about my old roommates whose music I did that I can't borrow/get music from anymore. A lot of it I didn't like, but they got me into PJ Harvey, which would probably be the one to drive most people insane after not too long. Especially the singing along part.
