help, new to L.A.

hey all.

I will be moving to the LA area (lakewood) the begining of june.
i'm originally from Kansas City, Missouri, having just graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

I'll admit, i've only read or heard about all the cool stuff that doesn't come through the midwest, and I'm quite excited an terrified of moving to L.A.

I was hoping all you Los Angeles bots could give me some suggestions on some cool stuff to do. anything from musical, museums, cultural, food..
cheap, independent, good natured/hearted is a plus....

a pilgrimage to the GR store is first on the list, plus, a trip to goldilocks bakery..(nothing like filipino baked goods that I don't have to get in the mail!)
but other than that, I'm open to suggestions!

I look forward to your suggestions. thanks alot all!

i had no idea goldilocks had a bakery out here. ah well. they're cool, but nothing will ever beat mom's cookin.

Good luck in LA. I recently moved to NY from there so I'm happy to give suggestions. What are you interested in doing? Food? Shopping? Nightlife? LA is large so you kind of have to filter. What's your flava?

people are more interesting than things-to-do anyway. there are some cool-ass people here in gr, so make some friends, come out to events & whatnot.

its great to see such a supportive community out there. and I thought the midwest was known for that, as well as ignorance, sexism, and good beef.

I'm definately gonna have to take some time to drive around and check out all the LA has to offer although I just remembered how crazy LA traffic is.

thanks alot guys! hope to see you guys around or something.

If you're out here in June, a good place to start is at GR2's next art show. It's on Saturday the 14th... More details to come, and I think a lot of magazine readers and board contributors will be making the trip, too.

I moved to K.C from L.A. It was slow and the weather sucked but I got used to it.

Youre gonna hate it bro. Move to the bay.

Bay Area? Yeah right. How can you trust L.A. trash talk coming from a guy who left Socal for the Midwest?

You just have to know where to go and be willing to drive there. Not too hard and worth it.

I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm just sticking up for the hometown.

I believe my friend Kim from the University of Missouri contacted you a year or two ago about you and eric possibly coming to our school. of course, there was no money at all.., so you didn't make that trip to lovely missouri! hah

thanks for all the support guys.

Although I had to leave LA for my own personal mental health, there things I miss in addition to my peoples there:

To find out the haps:
Jointz Magazine, www.jointzmag.com

Good clubs (don't go every week or else you'll make yourself sick):
Every Tuesday - Cabana @ Naga's on the Water, Long Beach
Every Thursday - Root Down @ Gabah, on Melrose just west off the 101 exit
1st & 3rd Fridays - Firecracker in Chinatown (not as fun anymore)
4th Saturdays - Soundlessons (I think they moved locations, go early unless yo're on the list)
Anynight you need to have a good drink - Star Shoes (no cover, it's the trying to be NY styleee-be cool with the bouncer and he'll let you in thing. DJ rotate so check your local listing to see when Miles and other cronies are spinning)

Good eats:
Veggie Wok - the BEST vegetarian chinese restaurant in the world is located in Cerritos, just up the street from Stacks vinyl.
Lala's Argentine Grill - on Melrose & Van Ness. mmmmm
Bossa Nova - yummy Brazilian food and the best deserts, open until 4am, Sunset & Poinsettia
Le Creperie - seriously. i don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. In Long Beach on 2nd street

That's a quick start. If you have anything else more specific you need to know, just holla.

Hate all you want foolio. I just know how people from the midwest get down.

From Humboldt to Oceanside, I got much love for California especially L.A where I grew up.

Afg42e, buy the CD 'Shut up you fucking baby' by David Cross and listen to his take on L.A. He's dead on. It's on Sub-Pop records.

I left for K.C to chill the fuck out and focus on school. Also getting engaged at the time, we decided on K.C cuz its cheap as fuck and my ex fiance had family out there.

My best advice to you is that L.A is the WORST place to visit but one of the BEST places to live. Plus you got the Lakers.

I feel the exact opposite. LA is great to visit, but a bad place to live, at least for me. I'm not hating on it, it just wasn't me. I couldn't stand the traffic anymore. Sitting in your car for hours trying to get someplace that's only a couple miles away. The smog that infests your lungs. All the Britney & Justin wanna be's.

I do miss some things though. Like the constant sunshine. Just like I miss some things back in Seattle, but not enough to move back there.
