It's very funny, I've always identified with Midori in NW. If I had begun reading it a year earlier I would have been a Hatsumi, which I'm happy that I'm not. Midori's a more needy than I am but really she's probably one of the only characters I consistently feel comfortable with after each read and the reason changes upon reading. During my last reading, which was probably within the last 2 weeks or so, I feel sad for her as I feel sad for myself.

Pinball, 1973 online

Holy crap! I don't want to seem like an advocate for circumventing copyright, but this was too good to pass up posting. Check out the:
Millions Blog there's a pdf link to Pinball, 1973.

Noice!!!! All we need is "Hear The Wind Sing" and we can finally complete the trilogy in English.

Too bad e-books are such a pain. I'm afraid I'm going to have to murder some trees and print out the 79.

Great find though Shibire. Thanks!

I have '79 as an MS Word file.

You can find the occasional copy of "Hear the Wind Sing" on eBay. I have a copy that I bought a few years ago. Funny enough, I still haven't read it.

There's also a specially illustrated version of "The Windup Bird and Tuesday's Women" done by Maki Sasaki in this booklet. Translated by Alfred Birnbaum. Sasaki did the dj illustration for Dance Dance Dance as well as the cover illustrations for Pinball & Hear the Wind Sing.

Sleeping Beauty? In a weird nostalgic way I can identify with her, not so much the beauty part, but with the sleeping part.

Murakami said at the Q&A that readers sometimes need to re-read his works to understand them better. So while reading After Dark there was this nagging in the back of my head that I needed to reread.

I didn't quite understand the perspective of us watching Eri Asai. I kept getting a creepy feeling that something bad would happen to Eri, Takahashi, or Mari. Kaoru I thought could hold her own.

Photos of Haruki murakami

Hi shibire,

I was at the Haruki Murakami talk at UH also and don't know what overcame me but I followed directions, which I admit here and nowhere else, and did not take any pictures. Would you be willing to sell some of your pictures? thanks

Technically the pictures aren't mine to sell. They are from a friend/colleague. I checked his flickr account again and he's made the photos private in deference to Murakami's wishes not to be photographed.

Everyone take a long hard look at the Murakami @ UH photos I think I'm going to take them down since they are no longer public.
