terry gilliam might've done a good job with alice in wonderland.

No. Too obvious. Same goes with any other directors with an obvious visual style. Maybe Julie Taymor. And even she is too much and only considering that this is a Disney shit would I put her in the mix.

I obviously want a mature and much more grotesque, fucked up, and darker retelling not meant for tweens or people who haven't grown up.

As an aside, what made say Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban a turning point in that movie franchise was the fact that an unexpected director (Alfonso Cuarón) was hired.

my favorite alices are Neco z Alenky AND the bbc Alice in wonderland with peter sellers. I hate what the mad hatter looks like.. the queens are okay but the mad hatter is all wrong. it should be creepy perverse dark mature but nonsense NOT pleasantly beautiful and nicely sweetly $COLORFUL.. ofcourse even one thinks the colors should be out of this world but they should be vibrant but musty and dark. Like the velvet cover of an antique book. Hell the mad hatter didn't wear make up or hang out in drag bars.. as far as I know..well he did give it a go at that singing career that got him stuck at tea time in the first place cause he offended time bUT still there's too much makeup. It's much more invitingly creepy and odd when the mad hatter just looks like any ol guy then theres that little almost unnoticeable twitch and great delivery of line and form that makes you feel uncomfortable...Thats what real strangers look like I have been told.
