YEAR OF THE DRAGONJANUARY 28 – FEBRUARY 15NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE

The Giant Robot 2 (GR2) presents: YEAR OF THE DRAGON – an art exhibition featuring Dragons! This is the official GR2 Grand Re-Opening as well as our beloved Michelle Borok’s Farewell…

Michelle Borok who is coincidentally Year of the Dragon, began as a clerk at Giant Robot LA and quickly found herself managing all locations, curating exhibitions, building the brand, and needless to say, much much more. She will be moving to Mongolia.

“While the Year of the Rabbit was characterized by calm and tranquility, the Year of the Dragon will be marked by excitement, unpredictability, exhilaration and intensity. The Rabbit imbues people with a sense of cautious optimism, but people respond to the spirit of the Dragon with energy, vitality and unbridled enthusiasm, often throwing all caution to the wind – which can be an unwise move: The Dragon is all about drama but if you take unnecessary risks, you may find yourself starring in your own personal tragedy.” The exhibition includes work by:

Andrice Arp, Robert Bellm, Aaron Brown, Elliot  Brown, Stasia Burrington, Bjorn Calleja, Ako Castuera, Sean Chao, Louise Chen, Shawn Cheng, James Chong, Luke Chueh, Chris Cilla, Jesse Fillingham, Cam Floyd, Harrison Freeman, Renee French, Gabe  Gonzales, Kio Griffith, Joe Hahn, Nao Harada, Hiro Hayashi, David Horvath, Kerry Horvath, Martin Hsu, Mark Ingram, Mari Inukai, Elizabeth Ito, Marc Johns, Jeremiah LaTorre, Little Friends of Printmaking, Tessar Lo, Bradford Lynn, Miso, Gary Musgrave, Mark Nagata, Ming Ong, Martin Ontiveros, Sana Park, Sidney Pink, Jarrett Quon, Jesse Reklaw, Sara Saedi, Ryan Jacob Smith, Dave Stolte, Ken Taya, Edwin Ushiro, Christine Vincent, Steven Weissman, Heidi  Woan, Yoskay Yamamoto, Jeni Yang, Yejin Oh, Sashiko Yuen

MONACO: WHAT’S YOURS IS MINE

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 7-10PM

In conjunction with the Attract Mode, Meat Bun apparel, Angry Bananas, and LA Game Space, Giant Robot is proud to host Game Night 8, an event that takes place at GR2 about every two months. For this eighth installment, we are featuring Monaco.

Monaco is a 1 to 4-player cooperative crime caper inspired by classic French heist movies and set in modern day Monte Carlo. It can be summed up as ‘Pac-Man Meets Hitman.’ In 2010 Monaco won the Independent Game Festival Awards Grand Prize for Best Independent Game, as well as the award for Excellence in Design. It is still in development, and this is a rare opportunity to play the in-progress title and interact with creator Andy Schatz and producer Andy Nguyen.

Giant Robot 2 Year of the Dragon Opening Reception

This was the end of an era. Michelle Borok – who some of you know or don’t know has left the building. After 7 years or more, the employee who left an indelible mark on shops and art in LA and beyond is leaving for Northern Mongolia. On saturday, LA experienced warm weather. Even at night, a light jacket would suffice. Across the globe, it was -50.

Some of the photos from Year of the Dragon are happy and the room was filled with artists. Some young, some older and a few of them asked, “is that Michelle?” The answer, “Yes she is” – no matter where she’s at.

No crying here.

CHRIS BURDEN’S METROPOLIS II AT LACMABy MARTIN WONG

On January 14, Chris Burden’s Metropolis II will finally be unveiled at LACMA. The kinetic sculpture, which was slated to show in the fall, took a little longer to realize than expected.

HAROSHI OPENING AT HUF WAREHOUSEBy MARTIN WONG

The Tokyo sculptor isn’t some poseur who simply paints on skateboards or appropriates the culture for street cred. His pieces (made out of used boards by DLX team riders in this particular case) actually capture and convey the energy and power of skating from a skater’s point of view.

Building the Walls of GR2

There was a dumb telephone crank call joke that went something like this: “Is Mr Walls there? The innocent granny on the other end meekly saying, “No?” Then a brash youngster who’s voice is picking up volume and speed: “So who’s holding up your fucking walls?” (Click)

The magnitude of this joke meant little growing up. In fact, I always thought it was stupid but I performed it with grace. Imagine the receiver of the call, nodding their head and cursing the future of the world all because of Mr. Walls.

Since then, I’ve taken walls for granted and should give them more thanks. They do the huge job of keeping roofs over our heads. Barring any disasters, wrecking balls or Kool Aid men, walls are meant to stay and I believe that more and more. In the last one week, from doing “light” construction at GR2, I’ve learned a lot about walls and even have issues with them too.

Walls seem simple. Most of the time, they’re white, flat and say very little about a space. It’s what you put on it that makes it, right? Or so I thought. There’s so many things to say about a wall and how it got there. Is it a nicely made one? Is it rough and crooked? Most of the time, we pay no attention to it’s quality but I can attest that surely there is a very nice wall, a pretty good wall, and so forth. Perhaps at least 5 levels of distinction from my eyes. I can now single out errors in the building and at what step caused the mishap, sort of like how I can see bad kerning or poor font selection.

GR2 the Rebuild

I grew up around tools since my father worked in construction. A kitchen because my mother owned a restaurant, but that doesn’t mean I can build or cook. It just means that I’m comfortable with the processes after watching them use powertools and knives. Somehow it’s in me to use these objects although I’m limited in exactly what I’m doing. It just flows fairly easily.

Step one for the rebuild of Giant Robot 2 (GR2) is to breakdown the shelving unit. The beautiful and creative units that were build 8 years ago. It had to come down, mostly by force. It was build custom to fit the space using great materials, but the disassembling became a demolition job. Using a crow bar, we ripped the shelves apart, trying to save whatever pieces of wood we could. While my father was out, it was my turn to break it all down. The cool thing is after the shelves came down, there was a wall already built. Now we just have to move it, put in a door, new drywall, and it’s done. It’s bolted to the ground, which is a great thing, but not as good when it needs to go up and over. Today, the plan is to get this done.

While my father isn’t here today, I get to clean up. Pull nails out of the wood pieces, unscrew the screws, and sweep. It sounds like the crappy part, and it is, but imagine if someone stepped on a nail. The entire job would be delayed. I used to complain at his construction sites when I was much younger because I was the garbage kid and stuck doing this type of job, and now it’s a pleasure making sure no one gets hurt and the job goes smoothly.

GIANT ROBOT 2 – REDUX 2012

TEMPORARILY CLOSED DURING CONSTRUCTION

JANUARY 2 – JANUARY 8

Giant Robot 2 (GR2) as you know it is going to change in 2012. In just a few days, there will be some light construction. Our “little big planet” will shift off it’s axis just a little and a new GR2 will be born and at the same time, a slightly different GR1 will emerge at the same time.

GR2 began in 2003 with a solo exhibition by our close friend David Choe in a hybrid space that focused on art, artists products, house wares and more. Since then, we’ve had at least one exhibition a month and in 2012, we’ll continue in a much larger space dedicated to art. We’ll have all four walls white and available as a challenge to the many artists we work with and they’ll have to rise to the challenge.

Aside from art exhibitions, we’ve featured various book signings, video game nights and even concerts. We’ll continue those too. Also, some of you don’t realize having a space like GR2 expanded that the hard work from GR2 developed into the other offsite shows including ones with Toyota Scion and Giant Robot Biennale which took place in 2007, 2009, and will happen again in 2012.

In a quickly sketched Illustrator mock-up that is less exciting than the concept and hopefully result, you’ll have to imagine that merchandise will be transferred to Giant Robot 1. Art items will remain, the shelves pulled off and the posters, prints and extra art will be displayed in a smaller section towards the front. The artists will have double the space, if not a bit more to work with. I’ll post photos as it takes place.

That said we’ll be closed a few days in early January and a Pvrinted Matter show is scheduled to begin Jan 11, 2012. It’s been a great ride so far, and hopefully by adding and subtracting, it’ll be that much more exciting.
