Living Depictions

January 12 – 30th, 2013

A group art exhibition featuring, Jay Horinouchi, Kwanchai Moriya, Sarah Lee, Elliot Brown, Shawn Cheng, and Maiko Kanno.

The commonality of the first exhibition of 2013 will feature six artists who’ll be exhibiting works ranging in subjects, yet most or all with be paintings. Each artist approaches their works in their own materials and ways. A few have recently graduated Art Center College of Design (Kwanchai Moriya, Elliot Brown and Sarah Lee) two currently live in Japan (Jay Horinouchi and Maiko Kanno), and one (Shawn Cheng) is currently living in New York City.

We’ll be adding to this, so keep a look out.

Know: This is the busiest art exhibition at GR2. There will be more people than there will be space for people.

1) Line forms outside. As far as we know, at this point, Customers can line up anytime you’d like. We’d suggest that customers get here early. Do know that customers can’t save a space by showing up and leaving. More than likely, the space will be gone. We will not police this line.

2) Out of town Customers: We won’t save Post-it notes for you. You can’t buy them ahead of time. They will be available online after the exhibition.

3) Most of the same rules from years past will apply. For example: Customers can purchase 1 Post-it by each artist. Until there is no line left. Then it’s ok for “seconds”.

4) We will be serving at least three customers at a time this year to move the line faster.

5) Customers shall not serve themselves Post-it art.

6) Great Customers of GR2: We love you, but do not ask for “Cuts”. Everyone will be asking for “Cuts”.

An Exhibition by Susie Ghahremani.

Susie Ghahremani’s work is eye catching and quickly heart warming. Her painting style is smooth and echoes her life long interests in nature, animals, music and patterns. Ghahremani graduated from RISD in 2002 and continues her own business, “boygirlparty” in various forms including gift items, crafts and more.

This exhibition, Work and Non Work (the title borrowed from an album by Broadcast) “emphasizes the experimentation and play of my miniatures and drawings that I’ll be showing juxtaposed with the framed pieces.”

An opening reception for Susie Ghahremani will take place from 6:30 – 10:00 PM on Saturday, November 17th 6:30 – 10pm.

Giant Robot is proud to present Misty Fog’s Combat Rock, an exhibition featuring Le Merde and Kiyoka Ikeda of kaiju toy company, Gargamel.

Known for his hand sculpted figures, Le Merde has worked tirelessly on a new direction in his work. This exhibit will focus on Le Merde’s Misty Fog line of figures. New items will include: New T-shirt, New Beer Koozie, 4 new Coaster prints. 4 color art pieces and various customs of the new sculpts. Also scheduled is a new figure release.

To most, Giant Robot Biennale 3 at JANM is simply the biggest, best group show that an indie artist can be associated with. It isn’t very often that pop-rooted, independent fine artists (Asian or not) are given a top-shelf venue to gather and shine. Eric does a rad job of cultivating this scene, and has built up a real family of artists in the process. I am really proud to have worked with him on the magazine that has showcased so many of them. >>

The banner is getting installed, but after finding a few snags in the print out, it’s all getting redone. Damn. So close, but not close enough. It’s a good looking wall.

Eishi Takaoka sculpture. The light was dim, so the photo is too.

Lynn Yamasaki… she made GR Jello. Those are Big Boss Robots in there. Seriously great and they taste great too.

Saelee Oh’s area is coming together. It’s like a dream world.

Scott Wilkowski. What can I say about this man? Did I ever think a Big Boss Robot would be like this?

That’s Rob Sato documenting his wife, Ako’s installation. It was her birthday today. She spent much of it working on her piece.

Albert Reyes is doing something somewhat unprecedented at JANM, and elsewhere. It’s his “haunted maze”. The funniest part is that he said the Japanese American Concentration Camp barrack on the second floor is much spookier.

That’s Clement. All day long people are asking, “Where’s Clement?”

Sean Chao’s pieces are looking good. The man is amazing. He showed up, dropped off stuff, and the next thing he does is leave. Then he came back and said, “I’m tired” and left. He’s been working on his pieces.

Masakatsu Sashie’s installation and painting. I had to find a desk, a chair and a lamp. It all matches well.

That’s Lynn and Mae playing with Zach Gage’s, “Thoughts” installation. They were into it.

Giant Robot is proud to present Two of a Kind, an art show featuring new works by Jeni Yang.

Whimsical might be the way to describe the works of Taiwan born and Southern California residing artist, Jeni Yang. Her works intersect cats, cakes, and nature. Her recent entry into Giant Robot 2′s Game Over exhibition included a video game, Cat Burger, which will be on display as well. Two of a Kind will include: paintings, drawings, and small sculptures including a wall installation.

An opening reception for Jeni Yang will take place from 6:30 – 10:00 on Saturday, August 18th.

Thanks for the visit to Game Over at Giant Robot. The exhibition features 140 pieces of art from nearly 80 artists. The opening reception on saturday was one of the most crowded ever. People filed in at 6 and we had people still hanging around well past 10. The work fills the walls and if you’re a game or art fan, this is a perfect place to get lost for a while. One of the first things you notice are video game cabinets and they’re featuring a game made by programmer Beau Blyth with art by Jeni Yang. It’s called Catburger. That’s Beau and Jeni below. Again to those who helped us get the show together including: Meatbun, Adam Robezzoli, Carlos Lopez, Dean Gojobori, Kio Griffith and to who promoted, covered and showed up, thanks much. We’ll get art online for sale perhaps later today or tomorrow.

Giant Robot 2 (GR2) presents: They Are Us

Solo exhibition by Ako Castuera

Ako Castuera often shows at Giant Robot in group exhibitions. This will be her first solo effort at Giant Robot. Castuera’s work involves a look into the past which has brought us into the present. Along with her sweeping watercolor hills and valleys are dinosaurs and prehistoric animals. Castuera relays their significance as a dreaming point as well as their contribution in our ecosystem. Also in this exhibition will be sculptural work also depicting prehistoric animals captured in a modernistic style. Castuera’s work is colorful, dreamy and captures a concept that explains who we are and where we came from.

Giant Robot was born as a Los Angeles-based magazine about Asian, Asian-American, and new hybrid culture in 1994, but has evolved into a full-service pop culture provider with shops and galleries in Los Angeles as well as an online equivalent.

Art Center Exhibition Winter 2011: Concept Cars, Art, and Graphics

The local news in Los Angeles, love picking up on Art Center graduation concept cars and I can see why. The cars are futuristic concepts designed by tomorrows car designers. Thanks for modeling technology, the quality of what’s shown looks as professional as ever. I’d like to have some of these are remote control cars. The rest of the work is strong and consistent throughout, and each section is as fresh and can be. I shot a bunch of photos so you can have a walk through of what I saw including tons of Asians. Art Center is filled with Asian students and at a graduation exhibition, you see the families which mean Asians multiplied. Here’s my photo set from the evening.

The cat is my entry. It’s a Cat on a Box in a Field. Paper clay, wood, acrylic paint. It’s what a cat would do, right? The pic isn’t the best, but maybe that’s the best way to see it. It sold. The wood block is ancient from a box of children’s blocks I picked up ages ago.
