Mighty Switch Force Thanks!
Getting a shout out in a video game is always special since how often is this going to happen for us? Thanks to the folks at Wayforward Games. They’re a cool bunch of fellas who do a great service to games both in and out of LA. Here’s the photo set from our past Game Night with them.

Nintendo Rhythm Heaven Fever Event Photos
GR’s co-presented Rhythm Heaven Fever event took place last night.
Play the game, experience the fever and enjoy. It’s simple to have a video game, but it’s hard to create a movement around it. Rhythm Heaven Fever is one of those games that can grow a cult ala Katamari and Parappa. It’s a cute game, rhythmic, and released originally in Japan and the hardcore fans came out to iam8bit space in Echo Park to play. We saw quite a few GR “Game Night” faces including the first few in line. Here’s a set of photos from the evening. Free T shirts, photo booths, Portos food, drinks, live painting by Yoskay Yamamoto and Mari Inukai and more. Visits by artists throughout the night included Kent Williams, Audrey Kawasaki, Luke Chueh, Carlos Ramos, Korin Faught and even more. Yes, it was a cross over type of night – which usually are the best.

Game Night 8 – Monaco
Monaco is a game of heisting. Playing this felt like you were Robert DeNiro in The Score. Running from guards, sneaking around, hacking, and more. Oceans 11 and 12? That too! Made by Pocketwatch games, it’s a thrilling and that’s Andy Schatz on the right below.

3DS Streetpass action.

Monaco is a 1 to 4-player cooperative crime caper inspired by classic French heist movies and set in modern day Monte Carlo. It can be summed up as ‘Pac-Man Meets Hitman.’ In 2010 Monaco won the Independent Game Festival Awards Grand Prize for Best Independent Game, as well as the award for Excellence in Design. It is still in development, and this is a rare opportunity to play the in-progress title and interact with creator Andy Schatz and producer Andy Nguyen.

Game Night 7 + Meat Bun Pop Up Photos
Another successful Game Night and it helps that Meat Bun has a new line of shirts which we’ll make available at any time. Watch for further posts. Fez is a beautiful game and with it’s sound has a shoegaze element to it. superHYPECUBE takes you into another dimension. It takes 3d Glasses. The developer (below right), Phil Fish from Polytron flew in from Montreal to attend. It’s an honor having him here.

Mike from Meat Bun and Kinuko who designed the shirt he’s wearing. (Yes that design was an art piece in Game Over at Giant Robot SF)

Gamer Gear! Meat Bun T-shirts at Giant Robot!
With the launch of the Nintendo 3DS this year, 2011 is the year of the gamer! In addition to the influx of many new games and new platforms, older titles like The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time and the Street Fighter series are making a come back. Giant Robot pays homage to the gamer in all of this by hosting Game Night at GR2, where gamers and developers come together to play classic games as well as new releases. Our recent Game Night 5 featured the new titles Skullgirls by Reverge Labs and Skulls of the Shogun Haunted Temple Games for fans to enjoy, and our friends at Meat Bun provided gear for the night’s events.
Meat Bun is the leading company in providing t-shirts for geeks and gamers. Their designs are bright, creative, amusing and nostalgic, bringing the appeal of video games to the masses and bringing back memories of Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start. Gamers and fans alike came out to GR2 and donned their signature apparel as Giant Robot offers 11 different designs for geeks, gamers, and everyone in-between.
Three of our popular designs are featured here. In collaboration with Giant Robot, the Osu! T-shirt features the average intense gamer in the aftermath of a pixelated duel! The neon yellow Fight Night T-shirt advertises the upcoming showdown between Vega and Balrog at Block Head Pub!
The three t-shirts below call out to the classic gamer who fought 8-bit vampires and eggplant wizards. Only the scar-battled gamer can recall the feeling of triumph and relief with the Beheaded T-shirt, featuring the ultimate fate of Count Dracula at the hands of Simon Belmont, and inevitably the anguish of a never-ending battle as the Lord of the Night always makes a return! The Secrets T-shirt quotes one of the most infamous words uttered by the ultimate undead: “What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets!” Gamers know that the battle against the Count is never-ending.
Meat Bun also reminds us all about the devious power of the Eggplant Wizard, who has never looked more menacing before. He isn’t the bumbling goofball from your childhood Saturday morning cartoons. This wizard is deadly! Expect to see more of the vegetable overlord as Kid Icarus: Uprising will be released on the 3DS.

In conjunction with the Attract Mode videogame culture shop, Meat Bun apparel, and Angry Bananas, Giant Robot is proud to host Game Night, an event that takes place at GR2 every two months. Each evening will feature a different developer and its games in a relaxed, community-building setting. For the fifth Game Night, we present two games, Skullgirls and Skulls of the Shogun, both by separate developers.
Skullgirls is a fast-paced 2D fighting game that puts players in control of fierce female warriors in an extraordinary Dark Deco world. From Autumn Games and Reverge Labs, Skullgirls uses advanced graphical technology to feature the unique art of Alex Ahad, whose work has appeared in Lava Punch,UDON’s Tribute books, and Scott Pilgrim; in collaboration with renowned tournament champion Mike “Mike Z” Zaimont. Calling to mind old-school arcade fighters – with a high-definition twist – it’s a one-of-a-kind, action-packed competition complete with awesome combos and an intriguing backstory.
Skulls of the Shogun is an invigorating cocktail of 1960′s flavored sorcery and strategy – in development for major gaming platforms. Washing up on the shores of the afterlife, players meet and join forces with vibrant ghost-samurai warriors, magical animal-monks, and mustachioed samurai generals on the way to capture Skulls of the Shogun. With its roots in classic turn-based strategy gaming, Skulls of the Shogun retains depth and adds a smooth, simple interface that makes it accessible and enjoyable even to players new to the genre. Players immerse themselves in battle with fun and unique game play features amidst lush, eerie environments. Also featuring 4-player local and networked multi-player and an original score inspired by old samurai films and dub, Skulls of the Shogun offers simple-yet-deep, refined and offbeat game-play.
Nintendo 3DS StreetPass: Meetup Everywhere is a simple-to-use online platform that enables an organization’s fans or followers to coordinate local, real-life meetups based on shared interests. Nintendo 3DS users who are interested in sharing content with others via StreetPass are invited to visit http://www.meetup.com/nintendo3ds to find events in their area or to plan their own StreetPass meetups. Users are also encouraged to use the “#streetpass” hashtag within social media to promote Nintendo 3DS StreetPass events throughout the year and attract even more participants.
While gathered together in the same location, anyone can use the Nintendo 3DS system’s built-in StreetPass feature to share content such as Mii™ characters, game stats and custom characters. Users can control which kinds of information they exchange, and they can trade data from multiple games such as nintendogs™ + cats or Super Street Fighter® IV 3D Edition at the same time.
Giant Robot was born as a Los Angeles-based publication about Asian, Asian-American, and new hybrid culture in 1994, but has evolved into a full-service pop culture provider with shops and galleries in Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as an online equivalent.
Game Night 5 will take place on Saturday, June 25 2011, 7:00 – 10:00 p.m.

Giant Robot Game Night 4 Holiday Redux

Attract Mode, Meat Bun, Angry Bananas, and Giant Robot. Game Night continues on. Our December show rained out, but in the end, being Southern California the weather was nice in January and Game Night 4 with holiday themed games. I’m not sure if people recognized the holiday cheer with the Christmas lights, the game graphics featuring a lot of holiday imagery, hot chocolate, and candy canes! It goes from 7-10, but we kept it going longer. We also added Street Fighter and when you do that, time flies.

Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! GR!

There’s a lot of interesting stuff floating around the GR office, and this particular design has a story that should be told. The design has a retro feel because it’s based on the Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan! videogame from 2005. Released for the DS exclusively in Japan, the game follows a male cheerleader squad team dedicated to helping people in times of crisis. Taking a high-school exam, making pottery, wooing a girl, saving the world from an asteroid–wouldn’t any task be a little easier if men with armbands were cheering you on in a synchronized fashion?

The task of this article of clothing happens to be assisting Giant Robot. The woes of print publishing are well-documented and our particular challenges have been fully disclosed, so it was extra cool of our friends at Meat Bun, the masters of turning obscure videogames into hip T-shirt designs, to raise money for GR with this shirt. That’s actually Eric in the middle of the manga panel (I recognize the T-shirt he’s wearing, if not the expression) clutching back issues of GR. Can you identify them all?
Find more information and images (or even buy your own) at the GR shop site. Support GR and keep the spirit of weird videogames alive!

Game Night 3 Meat Bun GR2 – Removable Pants GRSF – APE SF

The art on the flyer? That’s me. I didn’t realize it, but you know? It sort of looks like me. I asked the Meatbun folks and they said yes! It’s going to be a T shirt that’ll be available at the event and onward at GR2 this friday along with some of their other designs. Meatbun is featured in Giant Robot 67, and the dudes behind the game inspired t-shirts are Giant Robot supporters. It’s based on a game that has a cheerleading element to it. It’s
