While maintaining the intimate nature of his debut Capacity, Ellsworth has taken his personal experience to an entirely new reality, exploding with color and energy.
The American cartoonist takes from the lives of the leaders of the free world, his friends, his family, his sworn enemies, and gives them a new life that is both withering and oblique.
Redesigned to coincide with the release of Shortcomings in paperback is a brand-new edition of Adrian Tomine’s first book, 32 Stories.
New York Drawings is a loving homage to the city that Tomine, a West Coast transplant, has called home for the past seven years.

GIANT ROBOT BIENNALE 3 AT JANM (A.K.A. MY GR FAMILY REUNION)

By MARTIN WONG

To most, Giant Robot Biennale 3 at JANM is simply the biggest, best group show that an indie artist can be associated with. It isn’t very often that pop-rooted, independent fine artists (Asian or not) are given a top-shelf venue to gather and shine. Eric does a rad job of cultivating this scene, and has built up a real family of artists in the process. I am really proud to have worked with him on the magazine that has showcased so many of them. >>

Giant Robot Time: 9.14.12 – Giant Robot Biennale 3 Opening Party Sat. Sept. 22nd 6-10pm

GIANT ROBOT BIENNALE 3

JAPANESE AMERICAN NATIONAL MUSEUM

The Japanese American National Museum presents Giant Robot Biennale 3, its third show in conjunction with Eric Nakamura, owner of Asian American pop culture juggernaut Giant Robot. The expansive show features a gallery of eight emerging artists along with a customized vinyl figure collection.
Following two previous successful exhibitions at the National Museum, the Biennale continues to push the envelope with a creative, fresh, and uniquely interactive experience. This year’s exhibition highlights the works of Rob Sato, Deth P. Sun, Ako Castuera, Eishi Takaoka, Saelee Oh, Sean Chao, Albert Reyes, and Zach Gage, all with long ties to Giant Robot. Each artist brings their original style, from whimsical wall paintings and creatures in clay worlds, to a life-size “haunted” maze especially built for this Biennale.

Using Uglydoll creator David Horvath figures, Nakamura curated Project Remix, a custom vinyl show with over 80 artists from seven countries—including the rare combination of both established customizers and fine artists. The roster of artists for the project (UPDATED):

THE DONUTMAN CULTURE

By ERIC NAKAMURA

I’ve blogged about this place too many times, but this isn’t only about donuts. Southern California is a driving culture. It’s part of our social system. Donutman might be the greatest donut shop we have on the entire West Coast of the USA. Some will say that it’s “just donuts” regardless of how great they may be, but others, like us know otherwise. >>

AKI RESTAURANT WEST LOS ANGELES

Restaurants like Aki in West LA are a dying breed. Imagine when Japanese food was something exotic. Teriyaki and sukiyaki are words seldom used these days, but it lives on in classic establishments like this. WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH DOKDO?

By MICHELLE BOROK

South Koreans want the world to know about Dokdo, aka Takeshima, aka Liancourt Rocks. Korean soccer player, Park Jong Woo scored the biggest audience so far for the Dokdo debate when Korea beat Japan for the Olympic bronze, but lost his chance to be a part of the medal ceremony. He may not get the medal awarded at all, but he does get out of having to do compulsory military service. Before Park held up his handmade sign on the world stage, Koreans in London were handing out flyers about Dokdo to the international tourists around the city. >>

SHOW REVIEW: THREE MILE PILOT AT THE ECHO

By MARTIN WONG

I still recall driving down with Seam for their gig with 3MP at the World Beat Center in 1993 and being mesmerized by the lack of guitar and unorthodox drumming: one bare foot on the stool and the other lazily and perfectly handling the kickdrum. The band is a more traditional four-piece now but still has that seemingly sloppy yet perfectly hypnotic and stripped-down quality that struck me way back then. >>

The London Olympics are over. Bring on the re-caps, re-plays and medal re-calls.  For the past few days, countries have been welcoming home their national champions, and the medal tallies and rankings are still making news. JULY 28 – AUGUST 15, 2012

RECEPTION: SATURDAY, JULY 28, 6:30-10PM

Theo Ellsworth draws obsessively detailed drawings and self-publishes comics, mini comics, and zines about imaginary people and places. The cosmic imagery, subtle geometry, and implied animism in his works recall the epic, heroic, and odd imagery of Jean “Moebius” Girard, Mayan ruins, and the Nazca lines, filtered through the jam-packed and often psychedelic lens of underground comix from the ’70s. (Ellsworth’s first “real” book, Capacity, was weird, wordy, and wonderful, and published by Secret Acres in 2008.) Taking part in art shows affords the Portland, OR-based artist opportunities to experiment with color, explore larger frames, and let his imagination fly–or spelunk or dive, depending on his mood. >>

COMIC-CON’S NOT DEAD PT. 2

By MARTIN WONG

It isn’t easy for the casual fan to acquire tickets to Comic-Con. Once you get in, it’s an ordeal to squeeze past the movie studio palaces with their big screens and giveaways. But if you are willing to put in the work, Comic-Con is still pretty awesome. >>

BOB AND THE MONSTER SCREENING / Q&A AT KPCC

If you ever listened to Bob Forrest’s radio show, you know he doesn’t give a fuck about social media. Yet I’m compelled to gush about last night’s screening of Bob and The Monster, Keirda Bahruth’s 2011 documentary about him. >>

INTERVIEW WITH EDDIE SOLIS OF IT’S CASUAL

Meanwhile, Eddie and I chitchatted after each show and he began responding to some of the photos and reviews that I was posting online. One thing led to another, and here’s a (yup) casual Q&A with one of my new favorite bands and dudes. If you make it to the end, there’s an exclusive MP4 waiting for you. >>

SUNDAY, JULY 9, 3-5PM

Giant Robot is proud to host Dave Kiersh, an indie comics hero. Kiersh has been working in the indie comics space for years and has slowly gained a loyal audience. His style is freely drawn and appears effortless and calming. It’s realistic and nostalgic.

Afterschool Special is an illustrated romance concerning two teenage outsiders navigating a suburban landscape through nostalgia and personal dilemmas.  This 132 page full color perfect bound book includes affectionate nods to abandoned parking lots, late night B-movies and trashy amusement parks.  Fully written, illustrated and published by Dave Kiersh.  First offset printing and limited to 700 copies.

Dave Kiersh was born in 1979.  He is also the creator of Dirtbags, Mallchicks and Motorbikes, his first full color book, which was published in 2009 with the assistance of a Xeric Grant.  Afterschool Special went to print as the result of a successful Kickstarter campaign.  He has been self-publishing his own comics since 1999. >>

JUN KUNG, DANIEL WU, AND PRODIP LEUNG ON PLAYBACK IS A BITCH

By MARTIN WONG

Upon returning home from the Drummer’s Collective in New York City, ace musician Jun Kung began his career as a rock musician. Despite winning the 2000 Hong Kong Commercial Radio Music Award for New Artist, Jun was quickly disillusioned by Hong Kong’s music industry. Instead, he became the most demanded drummer in Canto-pop and went on to collaborate with the likes of Jacky Cheung, Eason Chan, and Faye Wong. It wasn’t until 2010 that he returned to making his own music with Jun K, released on his friend Daniel Wu’s Revolution label. Upon the release of its hard-rocking follow-up, Playback Is A Bitch, I got in touch with the Hong Kong-born and Macau-raised artist and asked him some questions about his new EP, his dabbling in acting, and working with Dan. >>

YUKINORI DEHARA “TALK SHOW” AND WORKSHOP

By ERIC NAKAMURA

The opening was awesome, but the workshop and talk was amazing too. Not only did you get to see the story of his life, you got to actually make a figure. He even did it in Japanese. No translation was necessary at all. It was hilarious. His opening yell, LET’S MAKE was followed by the passing out of Japanese paper clay. Step by step, you learned to make one of his characters. The best part was at the end, this little bit of clay that was left behind? You make an intestine with it! >>

SHOW REVIEWS: THE JESUS & MARY CHAIN, DYS, IT’S CASUAL, NEGATIVE APPROACH, JIMMY CLIFF

By MARTIN WONG

The first time I saw The Jesus & Mary Chain was a religious experience. I was still in high school when Rodney on the ROQ first played “Never Understand” and then announced that the JAMC were going to play their first gig in the U.S. at the Roxy in 1985. The show, which was a couple of nights before Christmas, didn’t last more than 20 minutes with Jim and William Reid mostly facing away audience and Bobby Gillespie banging on a single tom. >>

GAME NIGHT 10 EVENT PHOTOS: GAMES AND A MARRIAGE PROPOSAL

Game Night is always a fun event. The evening had a summer vacation vibe as the area was filled with locals who were just cut free from school. The crowds came through in waves, so it went from packed, to light, to packed again. We had 4 different games, 5 stations, Yeren – a board game that’s part of Game Over, and even a marriage proposal. >>

INTERVIEW: RAD THRASH BAND FROM SACTO

By MARTIN WONG

Like the musical equivalent of a Coelacanth, Sacramento’s RAD is a living, breathing, biting example of an era gone by. They carry on the fury, brevity, and humor of the mid-‘80s when punk and thrash were crossing over, but with totally modern sensibilities.  A couple of months ago, I finally got to see them play L.A. (along with my friend and ace photographer Ben Clark, whose pictures from a Pyrate Punx house show are included in this blog) and followed up with some questions that follow. >>

GAME OVER INTERVIEWBy ERIC NAKAMURAAlejandro Quan-Madrid interviewed me for the upcoming, Game Over exhibition at Giant Robot 2. It’s me blabbing about the art of games that’ll be showing at GR. The energy and effort of people making media is always awesome. ARTISTS DROPPING OFF WORK FOR GAME OVERBy ERIC NAKAMURAI wish I shot them all. Maybe I will from now on. Many are fine and smiling. It’s a nice day out and if you’re self employed, you can go bike riding, but it is deadline day at Giant Robot for Game Over. FREE SHOW REVIEWS: DUM DUM GIRLS AT THE GETTY, GIZELLE AT AMOEBA HOLLYWOOD, GOH NAKAMURA AT ELOISE’S HOUSEBy MARTIN WONGDownloading free MP3s is strictly for bootlegs, demos, and so on. But I have no qualms about attending free shows–especially ones that I can take my four-year-old daughter to.
JOE ESCALANTE OF THE VANDALS FOR LOS ANGELES JUDGE OF THE SUPERIOR COURT OFFICE #3By MARTIN WONGEveryone has friends who are in bands. But who hangs out with judges? Next week, original O.C. punk Joe Escalante (The Vandals, and more recently the Sweet and Tender Hooligans) is on the ballot to serve on the bench as Judge of the Superior Court for the City of Los Angeles. GIANT ROBOT PODCAST: MEI MELANCONBy ERIC NAKAMURAYou saw her for too short of a moment as Psylocke. She was the jilted “Hello Moto” bride. Recently she was Jamie Chen on The L Word. In numerous commercials and assorted roles alongside of her modeling career, I catch up with Mei Melancon at Giant Robot 2 on a recent morning for a podcast. We cover topics that begin with her appearances in high profile commercials, X-Men, L-Word, relationships, and her little known upbringing in a commune in Japan. HK MOVIE REVIEW: JOHNNIE TO’S LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE (U.S. RELEASE MAY 29TH)By MARTIN WONGLife Without Principle is a very different movie by Johnnie To. Namely, there are long stretches that showcase nothing but dialogue. Bankers, thugs, and cops talking about money. This is in stark contrast to the lengthy, wordless, and stylized tracking shots that the Hong Kong director is known for.
TONGUE AND GROOVE VIDEOBy GIANT ROBOT NEWSThat’s Franny Choi, Traci Akemi Kato Kiriyama, Ed Lin, and Chiwon Choi in the “Monsters of Reading” photo. TONGUE AND GROOVE EVENT PHOTOSBy GIANT ROBOT NEWSThank you for coming through. When the idea of a “reading” was happening, I was picturing Ed Lin reading out of his book, or perhaps notes or anecdotes, but it turned into something else. A reading event with poets. At first it was a strange thought. In reality, it’s merely art form. MOTHERFUCKERLAND: INSTALLMENT 20By ED LINRead author Ed Lin’s new serial novel, Motherfuckerland. PODCAST: LUKE ROOK THE APPRENTICE TOY MAKER

By GIANT ROBOT NEWS

Luke Rook has always been a friend to Giant Robot. He began his recent career in toys by opening Lulubell Toy Bodega in Arizona and soon moved to Japan where his career turned. From being a “toy buyer” he’s now a toy maker. In this podcast, Luke Rook explains some of the mysteries of the Japanese toy making scene. In a matter of a few years after moving, he’s unlocked the “system” of striking up vinyl figures from serious mom and pops factories. One of the greatest facets of Luke is his sheer honesty and frankness which is shaping a new sub genre of “kaiju”. He still calls himself an apprentice, but that’ll change soon enough. >>

MUTANT GIRLS SQUAD – PREVIEW OF NEXT WEEK’S DVD RELEASE

By MARTIN WONG

The legend goes that Mutant Girls Squad came about when friends Noboru Iguchi (The Machine Girl), Yoshihiro Nishimura (Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl), and Tak Sakaguchi (Versus) decided that since they like to drink together, they should direct a movie together–not an anthology but more like a jam where person takes a segment. But are the filmmakers violent drunks, funny drunks, or emotional ones? It turns out they’re all of the above in spades. >>

LOS ANGELES ASIAN PACIFIC FILM FESTIVAL – OPENING NIGHT

By MARTIN WONG

Tonight’s kickoff of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival featured a screening of Daniel Hsia’s Shanghai Calling. I thought the smart, stylish comedy produced by Janet Yang and starring Daniel Henney was a bold choice of an opener. Instead of dwelling on typical themes of Asian American cinema such as the diaspora or having to live up to the image of Bruce Lee, it presented Asians as being in a position of power in terms of commerce and culture. >>

Giant Robot Time: 5.11.12 – New work by Eishi Takaoka now available!

I AM FINE

EISHI TAKAOKA SOLO EXHIBITION

MAY 5 – MAY 30, 2012

Eishi Takaoka’s work is coming back. Although the sculptures of Eishi Takaoka all portray the same serene expression, their outwardly calm façade belies a world of bottled-up emotions. With nowhere to go, these intense feelings manifest themselves in outlandish formations that sprout out of the top of each figure’s head. The uniquely sculpted heads of Takaoka are rooted in a personal fantasy world that is fueled by the emotional ups and downs of daily life in lower-middle class Japan. He instills his frustration with life in Kagoshima and feelings of isolation into each of the pieces, which are comprised of carved wood painted with raw mineral pigments placed atop empty glass medicine bottles.

Takaoka’s pieces have been seen in group shows in Tokyo and New York, one-person exhibitions at Giant Robot New York and GR2 in Los Angeles, and on the cover of novelist Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore. For this exhibition, Takaoka will create 34 sculptures at Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles. See the exhibit.

OFF! RECORD RELEASE PARTY W/ FIDLAR AND SPIDER FEVER [...]

By MARTIN WONG

What can I say about OFF! The same way that the Whisky encapsulates a lot of what’s rad about L.A., so does the current project of Keith Morris (Circle Jerks, Black Flag), Dimitri Coats (Burning Brides), Steven McDonald (Redd Kross), and Mario Rubalcaba (Hot Snakes, 411, Spider Fever). It has punk, metal, and the pure darkness, aggression, vitriol, and smarts that seep through every Pettibon illustration or Chandler novel. Still blasting songs at roughly a minute each with huge amounts of chops and pent-up energy, there’s no room for the falseness that outsiders associate with L.A. >>

EISHI TAKAOKA OPENING RECEPTION PHOTOS

By GIANT ROBOT NEWS

What’s a gallery supposed to do when an artist can’t make it? We’ve had that issue in the past but this time, we did something creative with it. Eishi Takaoka isn’t the most talkative but across the world at his house in Kagoshima, Japan, he joined his solo effort at Giant Robot 2 – I Am Fine. He spoke to visitors as if he was there using Skype video with HD cams. He answered questions with some translation help from Google Translator, our friends Kio and Shihori. >>

CHRIS CHU ON THE FATE OF THE MORNING BENDERS AND FUTURE OF POP ETC

By MARTIN WONG

In 2010, The Morning Benders were headlining a sold-out Troubadour with rows of fans camped out in front of the stage hoping to hear masterful and sometimes even orchestral indie rock such as “Excuses” from up close. Since then, Chu and his band has changed their name to POP ETC and the sound has undergone an overhaul, as well. In anticipation of the self-titled new album (which comes out on June 12) the band released a raw, self-directed video as well as a mixtape of bold, R&B-derived pop complete with Auto-Tuned vocals last week. The transformation seemed crazy until I realized that the band has never been afraid of production and that David Bowie followed up Diamond Dogs with Young Americans and Altered Images added as much polish between Pinky Blue and Bite. {…} I hit up Chris on the new songs and sounds. >>

ESCAPE FROM AGE OF MONSTERS VIDEO GAME SPOTLIGHT (FEATURING ASS-KICKING MUSIC BY THE BINGES!)

By MARTIN WONG

There are plenty of “endless running” games out there. And some of them are pretty fun. But how many have psychedelic monsters, clobbering-time gloves, perishing children, and a truly ripping soundtrack by one of the raddest bands ever? Escape from Age of Monsters has all that, not to mention inside jokes ranging from Fat Albert to Michael Jackson to Tiger Mom. I had to ask Mayuko Okai, my friend and guitarist for The Binges, and Michael Su, CEO and co-founder of Massive Joe Studios, how the new iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad game went from finger-tapping addictive to head-banging awesome. >>

NEW WORK BY AKO CASTUERA

APRIL 7 – MAY 2, 2012

Ako Castuera often shows at Giant Robot in group exhibitions. This will be her first solo effort at Giant Robot. Castuera’s work involves a look into the past which has brought us into the present. Along with her sweeping watercolor hills and valleys are dinosaurs and prehistoric animals. Castuera relays their significance as a dreaming point as well as their contribution in our ecosystem.

Also in this exhibition will be sculptural work also depicting prehistoric animals captured in a modernistic style. Castuera’s work is colorful, dreamy and captures a concept that explains who we are and where we came from.

He is currently attending school in his hometown of Kagoshima, Japan and will not be in Los Angeles for the opening.
