I directed Shizu Saldamando. Unlike the rest, this one was a bit more difficult for some reason. I can guess it’s because I’ve known her for a bit but still don’t know her super well. This video helped bridge that gap. It’s the last of the series and I hope you enjoy it. Also watch for a future project I’m working on with Shizu at the Smithsonian.

One of our closest friends, David Horvath explains how Uglydoll wasn’t just born out of a plush doll, but it’s a process of drawings that aren’t just doodles like what most people would think. Uglydoll is actually born out of stories from own daily lives. The things that happen become situations between characters. It’s much deeper than you’d ever think. I’m proud to have directed David Horvath.

A solo exhibition of works by director, Iwai Shunji.

“Generally, people call me a Director or Filmmaker. However I feel like I’m just a kid who’s having fun. I like drawing, taking photos, writing novels and composing music. This time, I focused on pictures I drew. Please enjoy them.”

The exhibition will feature some story board art, drawn by Iwai as well as some of his photographs. Iwai Shunji is scheduled to appear in person at the exhibition reception.

The bear that gets pushed around and bullied, it’s Bartholomew Punchyface. Imagine how far indie plush has come. The quality is amazing. Check out the details in the photos. The sleeve and knee patches are doubled up like how some of us used to do it back in the day. The pants are actually cords! The back butt area has BVDs that’s loose enough so you can give Bart a wedgie! The belt is really a belt! Yes it’s a plush, but this one is deluxe compared to the rest. See the pics. Great work 3DRetro, we’re not just saying it.

Bartholomew Punchyface is the collaborative efforts of artists Luke Chueh and Scott Tolleson. Chueh’s cynical narratives combined with Tolleson’s nerd chic culminate into a character anyone who’s had a hard time in school can empathize with.

The most pathetic nerd bear you’ll ever meet. Buy him to bully him or save him from the other bullies out there.

This limited edition plush bear produced by 3DRetro is making its debut at Giant Robot 2.

Giant Robot will also have a set of two prints edition of 50 by Luke Chueh and Scott Tolleson.

It was fun shooting Edwin Ushiro who is equally entertaining. His interview reveals that his recent work is about small regrets from his past. From Elementary, middle and high school in Hawaii. He makes it perfect in his art. The interview took place at his home studio in Culver City.

Sean Chao makes dioramas that are cute and tell a story. It was fun to able to sit and watch Sean work the Sculpey. Chao speaks softly and is thoughtful in his explanations of his work.

I look like living hell, but Crystal from Santa Monica High stopped in because she had to write a report about an art exhibition. She chose Seasonal Changes and walked into GR2 rather quietly. Of course “yes” you can sketch the art, and yes, I’ll help you know more about the artists and their work. It’s not a huge assignment, but she’s taking it serious. She wandered the walls and looked at the pieces and settled on a couple of them. One by Jen Corace and another by Gosha Levochkin. She picked the pieces based on her own interpretation of the title of the exhibition and she sketched two pieces and wrote about them.

Afterwards, I got to peek into her own sketchbook! Talent for days.

Four Person Group Exhibition featuring Hellen Jo, Jen Corace, Deth P. Sun, and Gosha Levochkin.

Hellen Jo works in animation in Los Angeles, and displays a style that’s partially influenced by manga, perhaps something like Taiyo Matsumoto. Jen Corace hails from Providence, RI and her works often capture emotion with a small town feel. Deth P. Sun is a Giant Robot friend who’s consistently shown at Giant Robot and many extending exhibitions. Gosha Levochkin is a Los Angeles artist who works mostly in watercolor and captures creatures in fantastical scenes.
