PODCAST: LUKE ROOK THE APPRENTICE TOY MAKER

By GIANT ROBOT NEWS

Luke Rook has always been a friend to Giant Robot. He began his recent career in toys by opening Lulubell Toy Bodega in Arizona and soon moved to Japan where his career turned. From being a “toy buyer” he’s now a toy maker. In this podcast, Luke Rook explains some of the mysteries of the Japanese toy making scene. In a matter of a few years after moving, he’s unlocked the “system” of striking up vinyl figures from serious mom and pops factories. One of the greatest facets of Luke is his sheer honesty and frankness which is shaping a new sub genre of “kaiju”. He still calls himself an apprentice, but that’ll change soon enough. >>

MUTANT GIRLS SQUAD – PREVIEW OF NEXT WEEK’S DVD RELEASE

By MARTIN WONG

The legend goes that Mutant Girls Squad came about when friends Noboru Iguchi (The Machine Girl), Yoshihiro Nishimura (Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl), and Tak Sakaguchi (Versus) decided that since they like to drink together, they should direct a movie together–not an anthology but more like a jam where person takes a segment. But are the filmmakers violent drunks, funny drunks, or emotional ones? It turns out they’re all of the above in spades. >>

GIANT ROBOT VISITS OTOMO KATSUHIRO’S GENGA EXHIBIT

By BRETT FUJIOKA

Otomo Katsuhiro‘s movie, Akira, was my gateway to anime as a teen. Due to this, I was giddier than a kid on a sugar rush when the day came to visit his latest exhibition at the 3331 Chiyoda Arts gallery in Akihabara. >>

LOS ANGELES ASIAN PACIFIC FILM FESTIVAL – OPENING NIGHT

By MARTIN WONG

Tonight’s kickoff of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival featured a screening of Daniel Hsia’s Shanghai Calling. I thought the smart, stylish comedy produced by Janet Yang and starring Daniel Henney was a bold choice of an opener. Instead of dwelling on typical themes of Asian American cinema such as the diaspora or having to live up to the image of Bruce Lee, it presented Asians as being in a position of power in terms of commerce and culture. >>

Giant Robot Time: 5.11.12 – New work by Eishi Takaoka now available!

I AM FINE

EISHI TAKAOKA SOLO EXHIBITION

MAY 5 – MAY 30, 2012

Eishi Takaoka’s work is coming back. Although the sculptures of Eishi Takaoka all portray the same serene expression, their outwardly calm façade belies a world of bottled-up emotions. With nowhere to go, these intense feelings manifest themselves in outlandish formations that sprout out of the top of each figure’s head. The uniquely sculpted heads of Takaoka are rooted in a personal fantasy world that is fueled by the emotional ups and downs of daily life in lower-middle class Japan. He instills his frustration with life in Kagoshima and feelings of isolation into each of the pieces, which are comprised of carved wood painted with raw mineral pigments placed atop empty glass medicine bottles.

Takaoka’s pieces have been seen in group shows in Tokyo and New York, one-person exhibitions at Giant Robot New York and GR2 in Los Angeles, and on the cover of novelist Haruki Murakami’s Kafka on the Shore. For this exhibition, Takaoka will create 34 sculptures at Giant Robot 2 in Los Angeles. See the exhibit.

As previously posted on GR, I made several trips to the northern countryside of Japan in the days and weeks following the disaster of 3/11. And, though the intent of these ragtag “missions,” was primarily humanitarian, I took many photos along the way, posting them with my reports on these pages. OFF! RECORD RELEASE PARTY W/ FIDLAR AND SPIDER FEVER [...]

By MARTIN WONG

What can I say about OFF! The same way that the Whisky encapsulates a lot of what’s rad about L.A., so does the current project of Keith Morris (Circle Jerks, Black Flag), Dimitri Coats (Burning Brides), Steven McDonald (Redd Kross), and Mario Rubalcaba (Hot Snakes, 411, Spider Fever). It has punk, metal, and the pure darkness, aggression, vitriol, and smarts that seep through every Pettibon illustration or Chandler novel. Still blasting songs at roughly a minute each with huge amounts of chops and pent-up energy, there’s no room for the falseness that outsiders associate with L.A. >>

EISHI TAKAOKA OPENING RECEPTION PHOTOS

By GIANT ROBOT NEWS

What’s a gallery supposed to do when an artist can’t make it? We’ve had that issue in the past but this time, we did something creative with it. Eishi Takaoka isn’t the most talkative but across the world at his house in Kagoshima, Japan, he joined his solo effort at Giant Robot 2 – I Am Fine. He spoke to visitors as if he was there using Skype video with HD cams. He answered questions with some translation help from Google Translator, our friends Kio and Shihori. >>

CHRIS CHU ON THE FATE OF THE MORNING BENDERS AND FUTURE OF POP ETC

By MARTIN WONG

In 2010, The Morning Benders were headlining a sold-out Troubadour with rows of fans camped out in front of the stage hoping to hear masterful and sometimes even orchestral indie rock such as “Excuses” from up close. Since then, Chu and his band has changed their name to POP ETC and the sound has undergone an overhaul, as well. In anticipation of the self-titled new album (which comes out on June 12) the band released a raw, self-directed video as well as a mixtape of bold, R&B-derived pop complete with Auto-Tuned vocals last week. The transformation seemed crazy until I realized that the band has never been afraid of production and that David Bowie followed up Diamond Dogs with Young Americans and Altered Images added as much polish between Pinky Blue and Bite. {…} I hit up Chris on the new songs and sounds. >>

ESCAPE FROM AGE OF MONSTERS VIDEO GAME SPOTLIGHT (FEATURING ASS-KICKING MUSIC BY THE BINGES!)

By MARTIN WONG

There are plenty of “endless running” games out there. And some of them are pretty fun. But how many have psychedelic monsters, clobbering-time gloves, perishing children, and a truly ripping soundtrack by one of the raddest bands ever? Escape from Age of Monsters has all that, not to mention inside jokes ranging from Fat Albert to Michael Jackson to Tiger Mom. I had to ask Mayuko Okai, my friend and guitarist for The Binges, and Michael Su, CEO and co-founder of Massive Joe Studios, how the new iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad game went from finger-tapping addictive to head-banging awesome. >>

SHOW REVIEWS: LEE RANALDO BAND AT THE SATELLITE, JUNGHAUS AT THE SMELL

By MARTIN WONG

The band was tight as hell (especially for its third show) with the masterful duo Alan Licht on guitar and Irwin Menken on bass, as well as fellow Sonic Youth member Steve Shelley on drums. Ranaldo had two guitars and no screwdrivers, but broke out a violin bow for the haunting “Stranded.” >>

One of the best things about working on Giant Robot magazine during its 16-year run was providing a showcase for rad work by talented friends. This weekend I get to do it in a different setting–a film festival. With the encouragement of FAAIM director Tim Hugh, I put together Animal Style. The first part collects indie skate videos by Asian Americans, while the second section cherry picks pieces from Asia itself. More info.

Read author Ed Lin’s new serial novel, Motherfuckerland. New installments will be released weekly. Lin, who is of Taiwanese and Chinese descent, is the first author to win three Asian American Literary Awards. His latest book, One Red Bastard, will be published by Minotaur in April 2012. Read on.

AKO CASTUERA SOLO EXHIBITION – APRIL 7THBy ERIC NAKAMURA

Here’s a short film about Ako Castuera. She will be a having a solo exhibition at Giant Robot 2 beginning April 7th. I’ve known Ako for many years, and actually met her at her Art’s Crab Shack days in Oakland, CA in the mid-later 90s while she was enrolled at CCAC. She’s married to artist, Rob Sato and pursues work that involves nature, humans, and dinosaurs. Often using watercolors, she’s also a knitter and makes beautiful tapestry pieces.

GR INTERVIEW: ARTIST PAUL ROBERTSONBy GIANT ROBOT NEWS

Paul Robertson is a quiet individual who’s imagery is as powerful and iconic as any digital artist. He’s from Australia, yet might be best known for his work on the Scott Pilgrim video game. With one look at his art and then the game, it’s obvious. Robertson’s art style echoes that of games of yesteryear, yet the subject matter has both retro elements and iconography yet is filled with cyber energy and excitement.

GR INTERVIEW: DAVID GELB – DIRECTOR OF JIRO DREAMS OF SUSHIBy GIANT ROBOT NEWS

GR interviewed David Gelb a while back about this film. Imagine a person who strives for perfection. It doesn’t have to be in food, it could be anything. Searching for it and finding it is a rare thing, and Jiro has done that. The film is stunning, seriously, and it’s opening up nation wide now!

YEAR OF THE DRAGON

JANUARY 28 – FEBRUARY 15

OPENING RECEPTION: SATURDAY, JANUARY 28, 6:30-10PM

The Giant Robot 2 (GR2) presents: YEAR OF THE DRAGON – an art exhibition featuring Dragons! This is the official GR2 Grand Re-Opening as well as our beloved Michelle Borok’s Farewell…

Michelle Borok who is coincidentally Year of the Dragon, began as a clerk at Giant Robot LA and quickly found herself managing all locations, curating exhibitions, building the brand, and needless to say, much much more. She will be moving to Mongolia.

“While the Year of the Rabbit was characterized by calm and tranquility, the Year of the Dragon will be marked by excitement, unpredictability, exhilaration and intensity. The Rabbit imbues people with a sense of cautious optimism, but people respond to the spirit of the Dragon with energy, vitality and unbridled enthusiasm, often throwing all caution to the wind – which can be an unwise move: The Dragon is all about drama but if you take unnecessary risks, you may find yourself starring in your own personal tragedy.” The exhibition includes work by:

Andrice Arp, Robert Bellm, Aaron Brown, Elliot  Brown, Stasia Burrington, Bjorn Calleja, Ako Castuera, Sean Chao, Louise Chen, Shawn Cheng, James Chong, Luke Chueh, Chris Cilla, Jesse Fillingham, Cam Floyd, Harrison Freeman, Renee French, Gabe  Gonzales, Kio Griffith, Joe Hahn, Nao Harada, Hiro Hayashi, David Horvath, Kerry Horvath, Martin Hsu, Mark Ingram, Mari Inukai, Elizabeth Ito, Marc Johns, Jeremiah LaTorre, Little Friends of Printmaking, Tessar Lo, Bradford Lynn, Miso, Gary Musgrave, Mark Nagata, Ming Ong, Martin Ontiveros, Sana Park, Sidney Pink, Jarrett Quon, Jesse Reklaw, Sara Saedi, Ryan Jacob Smith, Dave Stolte, Ken Taya, Edwin Ushiro, Christine Vincent, Steven Weissman, Heidi  Woan, Yoskay Yamamoto, Jeni Yang, Yejin Oh, Sashiko Yuen

PRINTED MATTER 10

PRINTS FROM ARTISTS

JANUARY 11 – JANUARY 25

RECEPTION: SATURDAY, JANUARY 14, 6:30-10PM

The Giant Robot 2 (GR2) remodel happening at the beginning of January will transform the location into a larger gallery, creating MORE wall space and utilizing all of the existing walls. We’re shrinking the retail capacity of GR2 and focusing in on the art that we’ve loved sharing with the world there! We’ll begin with a large print show, “Printed Matter 10″ as we’ve done in the past at GR2, GRNY and GRSF. We’ve had numerous installments of of “Printed Matter” and this is the 10th. The print show will begin January 11th with an opening on Saturday the 14th. Participants include:

Apak!, Chris Bettig, Jude Buffum, Burlesque Printing, Louise Chen, Shawn Cheng, David Choe, James Chong, Dutch Door Press, ENFU, Ines Estrada, Jesse Fillingham, Hilary Florido, Matt Furie, Gabe Gonzales, Kio Griffith, Seonna Hong, Kerry Horvath, Michael & Pearl Hsiung, Martin Hsu, Mari Inukai, Jeremyville, Kaori Kasai, kozyndan, Jesse LeDoux, Little Friends of Printmaking, Bradford Lynn, Dan McCarthy, Gary Musgrave, Masato Nakada, Saelee Oh, Martin Ontiveros, Panorama Press, Sidney Pink, Albert Reyes, Jay Ryan, Jessica Seamans, Ryan Jacob Smith, Dave Stolte, Diana Sudyka, Deth P. GIANT ROBOT 2 – REDUX 2012

TEMPORARILY CLOSED DURING CONSTRUCTION

JANUARY 2 – JANUARY 8

Giant Robot 2 (GR2) as you know it is going to change in 2012. In just a few days, there will be some light construction. Our “little big planet” will shift off it’s axis just a little and a new GR2 will be born and at the same time, a slightly different GR1 will emerge at the same time.

GR2 began in 2003 with a solo exhibition by our close friend David Choe in a hybrid space that focused on art, artists products, house wares and more. Since then, we’ve had at least one exhibition a month and in 2012, we’ll continue in a much larger space dedicated to art. We’ll have all four walls white and available as a challenge to the many artists we work with and they’ll have to rise to the challenge.

Aside from art exhibitions, we’ve featured various book signings, video game nights and even concerts. We’ll continue those too. Also, some of you don’t realize having a space like GR2 expanded that the hard work from GR2 developed into the other offsite shows including ones with Toyota Scion and Giant Robot Biennale which took place in 2007, 2009, and will happen again in 2012.

In a quickly sketched Illustrator mock-up that is less exciting than the concept and hopefully result, you’ll have to imagine that merchandise will be transferred to Giant Robot 1. Art items will remain, the shelves pulled off and the posters, prints and extra art will be displayed in a smaller section towards the front. The artists will have double the space, if not a bit more to work with. I’ll post photos as it takes place.

That said we’ll be closed a few days in early January and a Pvrinted Matter show is scheduled to begin Jan 11, 2012. It’s been a great ride so far, and hopefully by adding and subtracting, it’ll be that much more exciting.

THE ART OF PROBLEM SOLVING

FROM CARTOON NETWORK’S THE PROBLEM SOLVERZ

The Problem Solverz is a animated show currently running on Cartoon Networks Adult Swim and created by artist collective Paper Rad member Ben Jones. Filled with kinetic energy that’s at times based on an abstract animation and story lines, the show also follows simple cartoon cannons. The art style is hyper kinetic, colorful, with an original look and feel that fans of Paper Rad will recognize. This art exhibition will feature works created in the style of the program and it’s characters. View the entire exhibit.
