The Mural at Wirtz Elementary School

By MARTIN

My buddy and fifth-grade teacher invited me to a mural painting at his school in Paramount, CA, last weekend and it was rad. Visiting artists for this second annual outing included Dustin Klein and Rich Jacobs from Oakland, Tim Kerr from Austin, and Koji and Kota Toyoda, Yosuke Hanai, and Hi Dutch from Japan.

Magic of Japan Week in review (a.k.a. Return to The Magic Castle)

By MARTIN

Magic of Japan Week 2014 at The Magic Castle came and went and it was totally rad. And not just because I got to hang out with two kick-ass magicians from Japan and take some pictures inside a camera-free club. No, it was awesome because it was the same as it always is: a claustrophobic, creepy, and uncool members-only spot where you can see close-up, irony-free tricks and illusions performed by magicians for magicians.

Takashi Murakami at The Orpheum with Pico Iyer

By ERIC

In a small crowded area in downtown LA, Takashi Murakami said, “It’s like when I first saw Giant Robot magazine in New York.” It’s been years since I’ve spoken with Murakami who in between our last meetings, has gone from superstar to megastar, from world wide artist and now filmmaker. I’m not sure which is greater, but he’s the bigger one.

The Broad museum presents

The Un-Private Collection: Takashi Murakami and Pico Iyer

May 29, 8 PM

Orpheum Theatre, Downtown Los Angeles

In anticipation of the museum opening on Grand Avenue in downtown Los Angeles in 2015, The Broad has launched The Un-Private Collection, a series of conversations featuring unexpected pairings of cultural leaders and influential artists in the Broad collections, taking place at venues around L.A.

On May 29, internationally acclaimed contemporary Japanese artist Takashi Murakami will be in conversation with bestselling author and longtime resident of Japan Pico Iyer. Murakami is known for his bold, graphic works that merge fine art, design and animation and continue to blur the lines between high art and pop culture. The author of numerous books on crossing cultures and a regular contributor to Time, Harper’s, The New York Review of Books, The New York Times, and many other publications, Iyer’s writings intersect with Murakami’s work in their focus on the common disconnect between local tradition and imported global pop culture. The pair will discuss the complex social and historical narratives woven into Murakami’s work and how they reflect upon contemporary Japanese culture.

Join Giant Robot at the programpurchase your tickets today! (past events have sold out so act fast)

We have a few tickets to giveaway! Enter to win a pair of tickets. Winners will be notified via email by May 27.

Not in town? Mark your calendar to watch a livestream of the conversation at thebroad.org. Questions from online and in-person audiences will be taken for the speakers to address at the end of the program.

Yoskay Yamamoto – House of Daydreamers

May 17 – June 4, 2014

Reception: Saturday, May 17, 6:30-10 PM

Giant Robot is proud to present an exhibition by Yoskay Yamamoto – House of Daydreamers.

Yoskay Yamamoto is a treasure in Los Angeles. As thoughtful and charming as his presence at various exhibitions, he’s also a developed creator. His painted imagery is unmistakable and his 3d work which is often hard carved is whimsical and precious. Yamamoto will be creating numerous flower sculptures along with paintings, and as usual, will create an enchanting installation.

Yoskay Yamamoto was born in Japan, attended school in Santa Barbara, and is a self taught artist living in Los Angeles. Join him and many of his friends at his exhibition reception. Music will be provided by Kalin Charles.

Visitors will be able use the car to play the original game Return of the Quack by Chevy Ray Johnston with graphics by Matt Furie.

“SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot will emphasize the larger pop cultural context that informed so much of the early days of Giant Robot.” says Carin Adams, OMCA’s Associate Curator of Art & Material Culture. “In addition to recent work, OMCA is excited to present new installations such as a custom mural by David Choe—who painted a mural on the Facebook campus, as well as a large scale outdoor mural in our Oak Street Plaza by Andrew Hem.”

Over the past 20 years, the Giant Robot brand has expanded to include retail stores and galleries in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York, a restaurant, museum and gallery exhibitions, and a popular website. It has also become an important outlet for a generation of emerging artists, several of whom have achieved mainstream success—such as Adrian Tomine, whose work has graced many New Yorker covers, and James Jean, whose is best known for his work for Prada, ESPN, and Atlantic Records.

“In SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot museum-goers will see that a certain artistic sensibility has remained intact throughout Giant Robot’s evolution,” says guest curator and Giant Robot co-founder Eric Nakamura. “The art is accessible because it has an illustrative aspect. People without art backgrounds can understand it.”

SuperAwesome: Art and Giant Robot will be on view at the Oakland Museum of California April 19 through July 27, 2014. The exhibition connects to OMCA’s other spring exhibition Vinyl: The Sound and Culture of Records through programs and in-gallery experiences celebrating how a range of communities comes together to create shared popular culture.

Merging Views

January 11 – January 29, 2014

Reception: Saturday, January 11, 6:30-10:00 PM

Merging Views will be the first exhibition opening at Giant Robot 2 in 2014 and featuring great artists from Los Angeles and beyond: Godeleine de Rosamel, Wayne Johnson, Kwanchai Moriya, Stasia Burrington, Dan McCarthy, and Dan-ah Kim.

Each will be featuring their own hand in art, from 40 clay sculptures by childrens book artist, Godeleine de Rosamel, silk screener hero Dan McCarthy, who captures Cape Cod, life long ago and worlds beyond, to painters which range in styles. Wayne Johnson uses oils in a time tested technique that echoes both contemporary and historical works. Kwanchai Moriya works faster and creates pieces based on sci-fi and the fantastic, yet at times captures his local environment. Stasia Burrington mixes an illustration style often using watercolors, and Dan-ah Kim works with whimsical and contemplative images which will add a layer of complexity.

It’ll likely always be there, a little, but by simply focusing on the work and on where I want to go, instead of dwelling on where I don’t want to, things have been going in a great direction.

Game Night 17

Saturday, December 14, 6:30-10:00 PM

Featuring three games:

Hyper Light Drifter:

Explore a beautiful, vast and ruined world riddled with unknown dangers and lost technologies. Inspired by nightmares and dreams alike, Hyper Light Drifter is a 2D Action RPG in the vein of the best 8-bit and 16-bit classics, with modernized mechanics and designs on a much grander scale.

Irrational Exuberance:

A first-person mystery playground at the end of the world, Irrational Exuberance is a surrealist space oddysey.  Explore a cluster of asteroids that appear to orbit exoplanet EX-I.  Discover hidden beauty and unusual phenomenon that react to your presence.  Minimalist controls and UI.  Ideally experienced with virtual reality technologies like Oculus Rift. Stargaze.  Find hope.

About Buffalo Vision:

Buffalo Vision is an impossible dream, a company, an alter ego discovered by Ben Vance in 2010.  Ben spent many moons engineering strange magic at Electronic Arts before technically & creatively collaborating with 17-BIT & Plush Apocalypse on the award-winning strategy game Skulls of the Shogun.  Irrational Exuberance is the first project built exclusively with Buffalo Vision.

Perfect Stride:

Perfect Stride is a first person skateboarding game exploring a surreal world of 90′s computer graphics through graceful mouse motions & time manipulation. Coming some time soon for PC, MAC, & iOS.
